The FSB can do whatever the hell they like. Law does or doesn't apply to whomever their masters choose. Russia is basically a very large mechanism designed to transfer money into a small number of pockets at the top.

It's always more convenient to have a veneer of legitimacy when trying get rid of or undermine someone who has become a thorn in a side, and blatant law-breakers make for the easiest targets.
764  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Kremlin vs bitcoiners. on: May 23, 2020, 05:51:58 AM
If this is some sort of 4D chess against crypto they've blown it miserably. Russia is a nothing when it could've been something. And no one else cares.

Most likely a struggle between rival factions, even in autocracies such as Russia or China more than a single person or entity gets to have a say how things are ran.

i have a feeling too many russian political elites are already invested in bitcoin or bitcoin infrastructure to allow this sort of bill to pass. considering the shaky crude oil market and their dependence on it, russia also needs to consider the tax revenues and diversification that regulated crypto mining and trading could bring.

The FSB is said to have a at least a five-figure amount of bitcoins stolen from Wex, it'd be easier to launder or make use of them if their country's laws weren't overly draconian.
765  Other / Meta / Re: Report plagiarism (copy/paste) here. Mods: please give temp or permban as needed on: May 23, 2020, 05:44:51 AM
Thanks; that’s good to know.  Per my prior post, I infer that hilarious was probably one of the mods bringing down the ban-hammer on plagiarists.

Was there any formal policy on this, or was it just an ad hoc decision by some mods that behaviour that can get you expelled from school really doesn’t belong on a quality forum?

Any admin, or moderator with relevant banning privileges can and could ban a user for this kind of behaviour, it always seemed like an obvious thing... if anything temp-banning and sig-banning in lieu of permabanning is a relatively new approach to give users whose post quality wasn't too bad overall a 2nd chance.

A separate question:  Is there any log of moderator actions that would reveal why BadBear banned Lauda?  It is probably not information that should be tossed into a troll feeding frenzy; but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t look.  Lauda has always specifically praised BadBear to me, when it wasn’t even remotely relevant to any current controversy; thus I infer that whatever it was, she must have learned her lesson about it.

Sorry, I don't even remember when that was. It could have happened while I was inactive.

Also back 2015 no one gave a shit about the issue.

Actually, we did. Other mods and I have banned many a plagiarist even earlier than that (definitely as early as 2013).

767  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Shower thought. If nations/states/governments are accumulating Bitcoin, then on: May 22, 2020, 11:49:34 PM
Shower thought. Governments are at an advantage if they decide to build their own mining farms because they can mine at cost/at loss, the people are taxed to subsidize it.

BREAKING: Iranian president, Hassan Rouhani, calls on government to form a national crypto mining strategy.

Not necessarily, Iran has one of the lowest electricity prices in the world even without subsidies.

https://financialtribune.com/articles/energy/97278/rise-in-electricity-and-water-tariffs-in-iran

anyway shower thought
why do governments even nee to spend money buying coin/ mining coin,
they just got to declare a mining farm as 'stealing electric from the grid' and take the equipment/coins
they just got to declare a exchange as an illegal operation and take the coin

That's what Venezuelan authorities have been doing for a couple years already.

Iran too: https://www.theverge.com/2019/6/30/20635616/iran-bitcoin-computers-seized-energy-consumption but that one was about illegally using subsidized electricity afaik

768  Economy / Exchanges / Re: List of banks working welll with exchanges to make withdrawal on: May 22, 2020, 09:55:36 PM
AFAIK, for personal (not business) use, most* Polish banks should work without major issues with exchanges. Millenium and Alior banks should also work with foreigners who are non-residents in Poland, but in the case of the latter they must hold an EU citizenship. BNP, BOŚ, Citi Handlowy, EnveloBank may also work for both EU and sometimes also non-EU non-residents. Unfortunately an account can only be opened from within the country.

*I think it's "all" but I'm not 100% sure.

770  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Wallet recovery urgency (PASSPHRASE & PRIVATE KEY) on: May 17, 2020, 07:15:55 PM
The wallet belongs to me;) I created in 2010 and i had the wallet.dat in  one of my servers. I invest 800Dollars at the time and just forget them there. I know i used to use generated passwords. but now that's the question. how to access my coins ;(

If you generated a password it's likely that it's too long/complex to brute force.

E-Mail me the wallet is from 2010

Something doesn't add up, it should be from (late) 2011 at the earliest, as that when Bitcoin (0.4.0) was release with the wallet encryption feature.
771  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Where is our killer app? on: May 17, 2020, 06:26:48 PM
I want a site like what bitbet.us used to be:

There's Predictious and BetMoose, but they aren't super popular. I think people tend to be interested mostly in sports betting nowadays, and starting around ~2017 a lot of altcoin projects which incorporated betting were created, that is my guess why sites like bitbet are no longer popular.
772  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2020-05-16] Pine64 Drops BitPay Before First Bitcoin Payment on: May 17, 2020, 01:07:11 AM
So at a *guess* it's location & lawyers. They are a US corporation so their legal department is probably a bit more paranoid then others. They are also trying to be a big player so dot every i cross every t and make sure nobody can come after them for anything.

I'm sure there's a point at which being overzealous in trying to please their overlords is going to result in the opposite of the intended effect when enough users turn their backs on them due to all the negative experiences.

BitPay (and several other companies) literally go out of their way to inconvenience their users. If it's their home country causing them to act like this maybe they'd have been better off keeping two or more legal entities, one for the USA market with all the bells and whistles KYC the enjoy so much, and another for the rest of the world (some sort of KYC would still be necessary, especially for merchants, but it wouldn't have to be as intrusive).
773  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Is freewallet a good? on: May 16, 2020, 09:04:04 PM
I have doubt also that this OP shilling Freewallet.org.

Did you follow the link that OP posted? Because it sure sounds like shilling to me.

The opportunity provided by Freewallet and Changelly can make the lives of those who rely on cryptocurrencies a little bit better. It helps to relieve expenses and to save time and nerves

It will definitely save nerves when Freewallet inevitably keeps money hostage until the user convinces them to release it.  Roll Eyes

774  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Am feeling Regret on: May 15, 2020, 11:59:36 PM
If you're feeling regret you may have bought too much at too high a price point.

Its not a problem for me to buying the 59 bucks usb.

problem is bitcoin is banned in our country so thats why i cant import such things in my country or i cant order, its totally banned here.
thats why i keeping my funds on online web wallet.

Did you try using a reshipping service? You can also try contacting Satoshilabs and explaining the situation, perhaps there's a way.

You can also use a spare laptop as an offline wallet.
775  Other / Meta / Re: Deleting 5 year old posts on: May 15, 2020, 06:37:37 AM
How many votes does it take to delete a reported post?

Two thirds provided the quorum is reached in theymos' living room every 5th Sunday of a month. /s

How many votes does it take to delete a reported post? Does anyone check if the admin says "yes" to one report, but "no" to another report (even when they are in essence the same type of report???) and how does mod malevolent know who made report? and how many reports are not looked at? (as in they say "yes" to some people's posts, but turn blind eyes on other reports??)

There are thousands or tens of thousands of reports throughout the month, Admins and Global mods see all reports, other mods see reports about posts from sections they moderate. Mods can see who made the report. At least 2% of reports are unhandled.
776  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: SEC vs Telegram Group Inc on: May 15, 2020, 06:17:13 AM
One thing though, it looks like they spin everything to look likes they are the victim here and blame everyone, including the system but themselves.

I mean, they aren't wrong are they? It's the US which acts as a nanny state as to what its subjects are doing with their own money forcing almost everyone else around the world to perform KYC verifications, and even that doesn't seem to be enough anymore.
777  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Is freewallet a good? on: May 15, 2020, 05:58:07 AM
Most of the topics you share with us are solved. IMO, it's a good and quite reliable wallet. At least, I've never had any problems using this app.

For an account with very, very few posts a weirdly high proportion of them mention Freewallet and how super cool it is. That's an odd look for anyone. No one has problems until they do and with a real wallet there are no problems to be had in the first place.

Both him and the OP act like they're shilling for Freewallet. Seems like negative experiences which people write are about their service are doing its job in keeping at least some people away.
778  Other / Meta / Re: Deleting 5 year old posts on: May 15, 2020, 05:38:56 AM
I would guess the moderators are reaching for violations years back, because real time violations are decreasing.

Nah, there are actually multiple people reporting some very old posts.

We don't even know what information is presented to a moderator before they act on a request.    Maybe they don't know the post date.

We get links to posts/threads so we see post dates like everyone else.

@QS, sorry to interrupt here but I've got a question.
While you are stuck in the old-posts-deletion vortex and are interested to know why the posts got deleted by mods, I'd like to ask something completely opposite. Why can't I delete my 5-6 (even higher) years old thread(s) myself that I have created then? Is it compulsory to keep the threads even when there are options to delete our own posts in those threads? Is it also just limited to a few sections of the forum or all the boards are included?

If the threads have only your posts, delete them, edit out the OP, and report the threads so a mod can delete them. If the threads aren't self-moderated and have other peoples' on-topic replies that's more between you and them, you can ask them if they'd delete their own posts but it's up to them.

780  Other / Meta / Re: I want a way to demerit posts. on: May 15, 2020, 03:47:53 AM
Once upon a time a user's Ignore button would be highlighted if a high enough percentage of users meeting specific criteria Ignored them, most trolls were very easy to spot, unfortunately afaik for performance reasons the feature had to be disabled.

We could also have a system similar to HN where some posts could be greyed out but since that's more intrusive I'd prefer the criteria to be strict.
