401  Other / Meta / Re: Ledger database leak --> Phishing on: January 14, 2021, 01:16:20 AM
This does mean though, that data is treated even more poorly that one could suspect. Being Shopify their e-commerce platform partner, it turns out that, seemingly, data is held both by Shopify and Ledger (something that I have not managed to read on their website). That is gross to say the least. As a customer, you are providing (and wishing you hadn’t) data to Ledger (and any thung in the aftermaths). I doubt any purchaser was aware that data was retained by Shopify.

Most companies tend to admit somewhere, either in their terms of service, or in their privacy policies, that the company will or reserves the right to share (usually a lot of) information relating to the customer or the customer's orders.

And Ledger is no exception:

404  Economy / Services / Re: [FULL] ChipMixer Signature Campaign | Sr Member+ | Up to 0.0375 BTC/w on: January 10, 2021, 03:14:22 PM
I doubt Chipmxer is charging the same for their service as they did when bitcoin was worth a few k and adjust it accordingly with the market.

Their fees have always been voluntary/donation-based. With more economic activity as price rises (as evidenced by higher BTC transaction fees) it stands to reason there'd also be more users using ChipMixer. But it might not all be 1:1, and seeing that DarkStar_ has merited suchmoon, the participants of this campaign should be prepared for reductions in rates paid. The 2nd highest paying campaign pays barely more than half what ChipMixer pays per post but with a smaller weekly post limit, and the 3rd highest is some shitcoin campaign with $6/post but with an even lower weekly post limit, and none of them are accepting new members.
405  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Bitcoin betting on the 2020 US Presidential Election | Trump vs Biden on: January 10, 2021, 11:08:49 AM
I guess those bookies that have waited for this have already released most pending funds of their winners. And this thread has already served its purpose.

BetMoose still has some bets left, such as:

https://www.betmoose.com/bet/will-donald-trump-still-be-president-in-june-2021-best-5305
https://www.betmoose.com/bet/sleepy-joe-president-on-january-21st-2021-5370
https://www.betmoose.com/bet/will-donald-trump-be-president-on-january-24th-2021-5329

And some more. Trump bettors aren't taking the losses very well judging at their comments in the bets that have closed and paid out. Some apparently believe Trump is going to invoke the Insurrection Act to stay in power.

But some of the above replies should be deleted for being off-topic.
406  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain Introduces the S19 and S19 Pro on: January 09, 2021, 04:39:27 AM
Well they do some mining. So they want cash to pay bills while they hold the btc from mining.

Pretty safe hedge.

And as price increases the more important is it going to be that miners don't sell too much or they will depress the price. I bet neither would TSMC be keen on accepting bitcoins in lieu of fiat for their chips.

@ malevolent

I am going to read the articles thanks.

First 2 were good. Third one I need to subscribe.

I wonder if we really cant get much gear for the whole year.

I actually like it if true.

Most of their articles are paid (and not cheap) but someone often archives them anyway.

408  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Helping (usually new) People Choose Their Wallet(s) on: January 08, 2021, 11:58:57 PM
Fair points. It's not just the vulnerability itself which makes me wary of Trezor products, though, but also their response to it. They have very much tried to down play it, saying that everyone should be using a passphrase anyway and so the attack doesn't matter, when they know full well that only a minority of advanced users use passphrases, and only a minority of them use a passphrase which is long and complex enough to match the security of a seed phrase. Nowhere on their main website does it tell people they should be using a passphrase, and nowhere in their new user set up guide does it tell people to use a passphrase. That doesn't reassure me that they would be open and honest about other critical vulnerabilities.

If your use case of a hardware wallets is as cold storage which you only ever use in the privacy of your own home, then sure, this attack vector is incredibly unlikely. But if your use case is carrying it with you everywhere you go and frequently using it in public to buy goods and make transactions, then this attack vector potential makes them more risky than a simple mobile wallet.

I think they downplayed it because there is nothing short of designing a new device from scratch for them to do. Three clicks, trezor.io -> trezor wiki -> Security -> first link, are needed to know that using a passphrase is essential to get maximum security. At least they admit themselves they don't talk enough about passphrases: link.

I'm not concerned about them hiding other vulnerabilities because the product is too popular and too many people, their competitors included, would have gladly taken the opportunity to talk about them.

In practice simple mobile wallets with malware is what leads to people losing their bitcoins, not hypothetical attacks where a thief saw someone with a Trezor and decided to steal one to extract a seed before the owner manages to find their seed backup because he saw a Defcon/Blackhat conference talk about Bitcoin hardware wallets and put in the work to learn how to extract the seed Tongue And that's assuming the owner doesn't only keep pocket change on their 'main'/decoy wallet without a passphrase.

411  Other / Meta / Re: Writing a welcome message on: January 08, 2021, 06:45:42 PM
Bump. This topic just came to my mind when discussing the forum's alleged unfriendliness towards newcomers here. Even if it's too long I don't think it's a bad idea, better something than nothing, and I'd expect people registering their accounts on Internet forums in 2021 to be more inclined to read a bit than their discordian-twitterati counterparts. I also like suchmoon's idea from a couple posts above.
412  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk's Alexa Rating during this bitcoin bull run and some funny stats.. on: January 08, 2021, 06:39:25 PM
I am echoing some sentiments from members that I have seen over the years: plenty of people have turned away from Bitcointalk for the very reasons that I mentioned - lack of scam protection apart from this really convoluted trust system that you need to learn - the barriers to entry for Newbies aren't solely limited to posting obligations.

Outside of the topic of scamming, new users effectively have no on-boarding process and are left (mostly) to their devices. Never mind figuring out merit and trust, good luck even finding out it exists if you're the average user that sees the first board "Bitcoin Discussion", reads a few shitty threads, and thinks that the forum is a waste of time.

Would it help if the Beginners & Help section was the first thing they saw? Maybe perhaps this thread, too? Especially when, relative to the stats, the view count of the four year-old thread gets outpaced with less than a quarter of that time. I'm not sure if the "Users Online" portion is accurate. Seems to always be sub-1000, according to the history here too.
The forum just seems to be exceptionally unfriendly to new faces.

I think there was a welcome message of sorts for newbies about the Trust system. And there was supposed to be a general one about the forum, too. But I've created a new account and I don't see anything so it seems it may have never been put into place. Tongue

The users that are incentivized to join Bitcointalk in this case would be those that value the freedoms provided by the forum, including freedom to create thousands of scam coin announcements, airdrops at no/low-cost, publish ponzi threads, write bland and uninteresting content

Thankfully the worst of them are confined to boards outsiders have no need of visiting.

Only theymos, Cyrus and Global mods can ban non-newbies and trolls almost always needed to be really disruptive before they got banned. If reporting doesn't help start a topic about the specific troll. The more people complain about something the more likely it is that something is going to be done.
413  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Another sad story, 2.6 BTC lost. on: January 08, 2021, 06:02:35 PM
I've almost to the point that it becomes tedious to send or receive coins, because I have to triple check everything. I've definitely made mistakes in the past with traditional fiat currencies, and Bitcoin.

I mostly solved it by having a more easily accessible 'hot wallet' for smaller transactions. Receiving is less inconvenient with watch-only wallets. Although striving to have maintain as much privacy as possible makes everything more inconvenient.

Unfortunately, with Bitcoin its very easy to misplace a decimal point, since you work with decimal points much more often than traditional currencies.

Personally, I don't find it to be a difficulty, but I'm extra careful when dealing with different units, e.g. BTC and mBTC, etc.

Data from formatted disk could be  restored but to ensure no body could get them he has applied  one of the the wiping technique which MiniTool Drive Wipe app has  and I guess it was DoD standard method. Chance to recover data from such disk would be  miserable even if  it were sent to forensic lab.

Probably not in this case according to what he claims to have been told by the company which released the password manager:
Quote
I tried everything Sad I was on a support call with the password manager company and they help do a thorough search. The problem is that this manager is actually really good and it avoids history and caching as a security feature. They even wipe memory after use. The only downside is the stupid thing with not auto-saving.

416  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk's Alexa Rating during this bitcoin bull run and some funny stats.. on: January 08, 2021, 12:54:20 PM
Alexa is completely unreliable. I say that as someone that has had an Alexa top 1000 site and had access to the server side stats.

Lol anyone finding bct via a nutildah link is likely in for an interesting read.
Willing scam facilitator for pay who attempts to delete his own history out of shame DT member, sig spammer and trust abuser.

Nice intro to the site.

All of these are largely irrelevant to a newbie who registered to ask a question or participate in discussions.

Anyway, whilst the merit system is in place I wouldn't expect any 2017 or even 13 volume increases.
Once word is out that a system is corrupt and broken and cuts off opportunities for new members it's hard to fix.
Sadly you will see other places outgrow the original bitcoin community.

There are better places to go to for people with short attention spans preferring flashy websites. It's also worth admitting that the market offers now more channels to communicate with like-minded people than discussion forums, and some people are just going to innately prefer them, there's nothing wrong in that.

Bitcointalk is an archaic forum running on old software.
Bitcointalk does not delete scams.
Instead, its moderators refrain from making that choice for you, letting you be the arbiter.
Additionally, it even allows ponzi operators to create their threads in their own specialized place!

How lovely! I'm sure that 99% of Bitcoin users would aptly say, "no need to change anything"

Ah, and if you're a Newbie trying to learn about Bitcoin? Ask a question. Wait 6 minutes to ask another question. Wait between two to four weeks to bypass that limit, or pay to get into this forum of which you have no use.

Anything to do with policing scams would involve occasionally treating non-scammers as scammers (for example by raising the barrier of entry to start threads in some boards), and giving other users a false sense of security as smarter scammers inevitably scam them. Not to mention the extra resources needed for all of that, there's a reason the Trust system was introduced in 2013 and the SCAMMER tags were depreciated.

It's also not unusual for new users to have to wait a bit before posting again to combat spam.

Agree on the software being archaic, though.

[snip]

The forum's primary purpose of existing isn't making people rich from bounties and signature or avatar campaigns.

Alexa ratings are pretty useless. The ratings are calculated based on the pages surfed by the users who have Alexa extension downloaded in their browser. Now tell me how many of you have Alexa extension downloaded?

Considering Indian section is pretty inactive and there aren't many Indians on forum, India coming at second spot is certainly due to me. I have Alexa installed since 2018. I guess nutildah has Alexa installed too and he uses search engine to login to his profile.  Roll Eyes Well, if not then it's pretty impresive.

Dang. I didn't realise that. That is pretty much worthless. What motivation does someone have to install the extension? I could understand if they get paid for it somehow, but I doubt it. Seems that data can come from the websites themselves as well if they've included the Alexa script, but still how many of them do? Reminds me of how worthless TV ratings are. In the UK at least there's a Broadcasters Board and they recruit a mere 12,000 people to report back to them about what they're watching and how they rate the program. Given that there's 66+ million people in the UK I'm not sure how they're meant to represent the entire population, and especially not accurately. That's one good thing about streaming services as they know exactly how many people are watching.

Toolbars aren't used anymore since their popularity peaked probably over a decade ago, it's from Alexa's scripts on websites but mostly from extensions (25k different extensions according to Alexa).

12k/66m can be enough, all depends if the sample of the population is representative which is the difficult part but shouldn't be a problem when given enough thought how to do it.
417  Local / Polski / Re: Pospekulujmy o aktualnej i przyszłej cenie BTC. on: January 08, 2021, 11:32:06 AM
418  Other / Meta / Re: How about new sub section 'Investment discussion' on: January 07, 2021, 05:57:51 PM
Not a place where one shill their tokens but rather where you can discuss strategies, what factors made your investment work, what did not, etc.

The closest thing we have now regarding this is Trading discussion, but these two things differ a lot.

If you want to a place not for shilling but for discussing investments in tokens, your topic belongs in one of the altcoin boards.

For non-Bitcoin investments there's Off-topic but Serious Discussion and Ivory Tower and often Economics should also fit.

For Bitcoin investments if Trading Discussion doesn't feel like the right board for your specific topic, then Economics, Speculation, or maybe the top-level Marketplace board or the Securities board would be a better fit.
419  Local / Polski / Re: Pospekulujmy o aktualnej i przyszłej cenie BTC. on: January 07, 2021, 03:51:21 PM

https://www.coindesk.com/nyag-tether-bitfinex-loan-documents-coming-weeks
