282  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Issues with Binance on: March 14, 2021, 03:27:35 AM
Guys, I don't know why you're pointing fingers at free VPNs, I actually signed up and did my KYC on Binance two weeks ago using a free VPN (by mistake, I realized that just when finished as the page stopped loading and I saw the kill switch activated. I restarted all the process with my home IP and it seems they don't give a damn, they even sent me my card free of charge, and seems like my deposit is having no trouble either.

I doubt Binance has a list and says this is a free VPN is bad, this a paid VPN is good, common, abuse can happen with all of them and probably people who are deeply involved in money laundering are not risking free VPNs that can turn out to be part of some honeypot operations. It's far more likely that users forget to open their VPNs or have the killswitch activated or they click the links directly from email before starting it and their real IP which is from a foreign country or has been used by some other user is revealed.

Paid VPN or not, at their scale it doesn't matter, if they wanted to ban you they probably already would have done it. I bet they mainly care about people using their sites from jurisdictions they don't want to be doing business with, e.g. USA and UN-sanctioned countries.

My suggestion is to hold your bitcoin and do not sell it right now because bitcoin can increase so high without you can imagine how high of that.

It would be prudent for OP to at least learn the basics of the basics of Bitcoin, how to use a wallet, etc. so they know how to send or sell when they find themselves in a need to do so. And make sure no one scammed them when sending them the promised bitcoins in the first place.
284  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The history of bitcoin ATMs is much longer than I thought! on: March 13, 2021, 09:47:31 PM
You are also right about this, crypto ATMs terms of services differ, but I too noticed they are moving towards ways individual identities can be easily known, but I have come to think the company providing such services have a mobile number, email or other ways to get in touch to know about their terms of service, some people will first do that to know if to use it or not. Some will not require for anything related to kyc (but I doubt that these days), some will not require for anything other than phone number while buying and selling less than $2000 but it depends on terms of service. Although, giving out phone number can likely compromise privacy,  and I have never heard of recent ATMs that will not demand for phone number at certain point either for buying and selling, but these TOS are important because very possible there are some crypto ATM that might still provide the privacy.

There are still Bitcoin ATMs in continental Europe which don't even require a phone number, much less other forms of identification. But it's probably a matter of time before that changes forever.

Malaysia, for example actually had 2 ATMs in a trendy area some time in 2012-2013 (imagine) back when most people still didn't even feel comfortable with mobile payments yet. They both fell into disrepair really quickly too ha!

I've been following the Bitcoin ATM space since the start, I really doubt there were any there before 2014 unless it was a temporary thing self-built DIY thing by an enthusiast.
285  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The history of bitcoin ATMs is much longer than I thought! on: March 13, 2021, 01:33:47 AM
Its quite surprising how far, and wide the ATMs have reached around the world. I've some some in foreign countries, as well as being in my home country. I'm never really seen the need to use one, over other more traditional ways, especially if you were to consider tampering, which occasionally can occur with non cryptocurrency ATMs. Personally, I prefer to purchase from an exchange, but I'm curious in this day, and age what would be the benefit for a cryptocurrency ATM other than being a gimmick?

The ATM would themselves add a markup, very much like traditional exchanges, these days everyone offering a service usually requires KYC, and therefore that eliminates the privacy aspect that these provided once upon a time, and by using a ATM you are publicly advertising that you are into Bitcoin, and with the recent surges in Bitcoin, one might become a higher priority target than traditional ATM users.

There are still ATMs which don't require KYC, so that's one reason to use one for many people. Not all of them have huge markups. There's more trouble with using exchanges as they always ask for dox, can refuse to do business with a users for any reason, can freeze the funds, some banks don't allow their users to do business with exchanges, etc. And some people still haven't entirely switched to electronic payments.

There's also the fact that these ATMs are usually situated in cities, and therefore require traveling to get to for a lot of people which either adds to the costs, or simply as it was in your case; adds some muscle. I would be particularly interested in seeing the statistics of how often these devices are used, since I simply can't see them being viable for most users, or at least not very convenient.

Most people live in urban areas.

Yea, just a pity that the manufacturers and distributors of these Bitcoin ATM's are mostly targeted at the 1st world countries and 3rd world cities are not even covered. I travel a lot for work and I can tell you that there are almost ZERO Bitcoin ATM's in large cities in 3rd world countries.

I think these companies are just worried about the profits and they could care less about these 3rd world countries. (Getting these ATM's out there, will help with remittance ...because a lot of 3rd world citizens are working in 1st world countries and they always send money home with expensive remittance services, like MoneyGram)  Angry

People in 3rd world countries are free to buy Bitcoin ATMs themselves to operate and make money from. If few are doing it, there probably are risk/regulatory reasons for that. They're poorer but not that poor to explain why there are so few Bitcoin ATMs in some poorer populous countries.
286  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2021-03-12]French government to auction 611 BTC seized in GateHub hacking on: March 13, 2021, 01:08:42 AM
As the judicial investigation into the GateHub hack is still ongoing, this means that if Gabriel Kab and Nassim B are cleared of the charges, they will receive all proceeds from the French government's planned Bitcoin auction. If they are found guilty, the proceeds from the sale will go to the French government.

What this article fails to mention, but what the French one that this article is based on doesn't, is that the injured parties (i.e. the hacked exchange/wallet) will be able to recover the money from the auctioned stolen loot.

Can you post the link to the supposed app? That will make it easier to help you, assuming you weren't scammed in some way.
288  Economy / Gambling / Re: bustabit – The original crash game on: March 12, 2021, 11:58:11 PM
I wouldn't expect any significant divestment until the changes come into effect or right until before then. Currently we'd need to see a divestment of about 1,400 BTC after the change to bring the commission rate back down to 50%. More will be required eventually if Bitcoin's price remains at this level or continues to increase, but since the calculation uses a 360-day moving average that will happen gradually.

If the divestment isn't as high as anticipated, perhaps info about estimated ROI (of a given investment, ceteris paribus) could be added.

I'm assuming the change to Vue was predicated on it being a bit easier develop with as opposed to Angular (which is also very different from AngularJS).

P.S. just glancing at it for 2 seconds and throwing up means you just don't see the bigger picture. I guess only time will tell  Smiley

How much more time? Can anyone give a rough ETA?

290  Other / Meta / Re: Get Donator status by donating 10 BTC on: March 12, 2021, 11:13:56 PM
I created the Community generated suggestions to improve the forum (+ eventual voting on them) thread a while back: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4893744.0

And theymos did post in there somewhere with his opinions on them. Think they were separated into three categories like yes, no, maybe so you can see where he stands on certain things.

Thanks for the link. Still, the idea of extra paid ranks is a couple years older than that, not sure if it's a thing that's likely to be introduced.

Okay maybe we don't have to monetize it? Maybe the ranks could be allotted to specific people like: DT members, Merit sources ya know? Since the forum administration plays a big role in both deciding DT1 members and merit sources, these members surely deserve a rank for themselves. For everything they have done. I mean imagine how cool it would be if DT members have like a police siren as their badge or something.  Shocked

Can't wait for the new drama about the MS/DT 'cabal' acquiring more powers...

//

While you're here if you don't mind Wink, is it feasible to live entirely off of fish, crustaceans and maybe algae, without having to leave the sea?

Thank you for your detailed response, but I just have a few more questions.

Would it not be better to buy old oil rigs and then convert that to living spaces? The oil rigs can withstand high seas and they can be moved and no research and development would be necessary... reducing the funds needed for this.  Huh

The oil rigs can also be retrofitted to serve as energy generators at the bottom of the pylons? (Hydro electricity) to provide energy for the small households on top?

These platforms can definitely operate in International waters ... but as you have experienced.. that does not matter to authorities. (Also... distance is not practical if you live that far away from civilization)  Roll Eyes  (Boats can be lifted out of the water and Helicopters can be used for traveling)

Aren't they pretty expensive to run? And afaik people can only get on them via cranes or helicopters.

-   Animated signatures.

Ability to add animated avatars and even images (regardless of size) in signatures was removed so not sure how that would pass.

-   Access to new and private chatrooms and/or boards.

I think the right time to monetize the forum in this way has passed.

I remember you telling in the past you brought it up to theymos in the staff board, any luck yet?     And I quite vividly remember discussing the potential benefits that these new ranks could include, that too years ago. Oh well. We can only keep discussing about it.

Similar ideas were raised by many people, and afaik theymos commented publicly (~somewhere~) about this and didn't seem particularly enthused.

But a novelty at this cost, is it worth considering that it is almost worthless realistically?

CET/UTC+1/GMT+1 strefy czasowej.
296  Local / Polski / Re: Jak to jest, że BTC kosztuje 40K USD, a ja dalej nie jestem milionerem? on: March 10, 2021, 01:15:05 AM
No i jak tu zostać milionerem z inwestowania w krypto? Jakieś pomysły?

Zazwyczaj najprostsza odpowiedź brzmi:

1) z dala od shitcoinów
2) HODL
3) profit

297  Local / Polski / Re: Polish Hyde Park on: March 10, 2021, 01:11:07 AM

How far would you go if an exchange has taken your funds as a hostage?

If I had my money taken hostage, obviously I would take it back if I were in a position to do so Wink

What behavior from the exchange would result in you calling your "last resort"?

Bir Tawil (aka water well) shouldn't be see as an interesting location cause it is a deserted territory with just sand, mountains and no water that's the reason why it was not claimed by Sudan or Egypt.
I think British Virgin Islands, Zimbabwe and Liberland could be the best place part with sovereignty.

Has anyone bothered to properly search for water, though?

And there's more to it than that, whichever country would decide to lay claim on Bir Tawil would have to forfeit claim over the more attractive and larger Hala'ib Triangle.

Please find me a country willing to part with a bit of sovereignty.

Unfortunately most examples I can think of are from pre-contemporary history, and most are transactions between state actors anyway.

Vaguely related: I stumbled upon "The Market for Sovereign Control" just now, if anyone's interested: https://scholarship.law.duke.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?referer=&httpsredir=1&article=3880&context=dlj
