2201  Bitcoin / Mining / Is mining profitable? Um, duh? on: January 29, 2013, 07:39:12 AM
I often wonder about those who engage in the "Is it still profitable to mine?" debate, particularly those who fall on the "no" side of the fence.

Consider how many miners turned off their machines around Nov.-Dec. 2011 when BTC price approached $2.  Their reasoning was simple - they stopped because their little calculators told them that they'd be losing money by continuing to mine.

But what if they had continued anyway?  And what if they held onto those coins until today?  Would such foresight have changed their decisions?  Would they have continued to mine anyway?  I'm sure they would have if they knew that in early 2013 the coins they were mining would become almost 10 times as valuable.

This brings up another question: why did people give up CPU mining?  And why not continue to mine BTC with your *gasp* NVIDIA card?  After all, if so many people here believe that BTC value could reach five or six digits, then why aren't they squeezing out as much future profit as they possibly can?

So, what's your excuse?  Why did you stop mining?

2203  Economy / Computer hardware / [WTS] Radeon 5550 1 GB - 1.5 BTC + shipping on: January 27, 2013, 12:02:48 AM
Hello,

I want to get rid of a like-new Radeon 5550 1 GB video card.  The card was originally received as part of a computer bundle, but
I chose to upgrade my card after only one week of use.  The card has almost never been used and has been stored in an anti-static bag in its original box since the upgrade.

I'm looking for 1.5 BTC + shipping.

This card is a perfectly affordable solution if you're a new miner looking to tinker with mining settings, a gamer on a budget looking for quality gameplay, or both!

Who wants it?

2207  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: BitInstant extremely poor design, lots of confusion, poor service on: January 24, 2013, 09:06:13 PM
I spend at least a good hour trying to figure it out.
The "live chat" have no one on it.
The "support" have no one responding. The earliest response was 2 days after I submitted it, and they only responded b/c I started this thread.

I just tried "live chat" on BitInstant and received a live operator in about 15 seconds.  Can't speak for other cases, but...
2208  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: BitInstant extremely poor design, lots of confusion, poor service on: January 24, 2013, 08:37:31 PM
@ OP,

This thread is childish.  I used BitInstant for my first time a few weeks ago and I experienced a smooth transaction with zero confusion using BitInstant's simple interface.  I used Dwolla to purchase BTC sent directly to a wallet address and received them within 5-10 minutes.

The title of this thread should be changed.  Website design is not poor; it's about as clear and simple as you can get given that every time you change your payment method or target destination, the website automatically refreshes to reflect the change.

Now, let's say you choose "BitStamp" as your destination account.  The website will show three fields:  one to enter "Account ID or Username," one for "Amount (USD) to Pay," and one for your "Notification Email."  If instead you choose something like "Mt. Gox" for your target destination, you will notice the top field has changed from "Account ID or Username" to "MtGox Account #."   This should make it extremely obvious that the account ID BitInstant was requesting for your transaction was a BitStamp ID, not a MtGox ID.

To demonstrate the point further, select any of the target destinations, but then cycle through the different funding options.  You will notice that no matter what funding option you pick, (MtGox, Dwolla, BTC-e coupon, etc.) the text fields now remain exactly the same.  This should make it even more obvious that the account ID requested will ALWAYS be that of the target destination and not the funding option.

My guess is that if the OP had taken even 5-10 more seconds to look at the site, he would have solved his own confusion.  Now, please change the title of this thread.

No it is not obvious. Why would I cycle through the options when I know I am going from MtGox to BitStamp? What makes me want to try out all the options?
Website design is about what the user experience, and that was my experience when I first started to use it.
You've only addressed one issue, if you look at the other issues I've stated, you'll know what I mean by poor design.
Look at all the other complaints too, it's not like I am the only one having the problem.
I haven't been really using the site since.

It's obvious to those who take an extra minute to see how the site works.  It sounds to me like you were hasty and you wanted your BTC right away, so you gambled your money and made a transaction even though you were still confused.  Why would you use a site you weren't 100% sure about how it operates, anyway?  Especially with Bitcoin?  But instead of taking that extra minute to figure it out, or even instead of contacting support for clarification, you acted out of confusion and then decided that BitInstant should take the blame for it.

It's not fair to call BitInstant a "poor service" when it works.  It's not fair to call it "confusing" when the whole site has step-by-step instructions, an FAQ, and a live support chat to help remedy that confusion.  Anything can be confusing, but it's not fair to call it such when you didn't take any of the available steps to try to fix your confusion.  Instead, you acted out of confusion as if it were a sound financial decision, then you freaked out because you didn't know what you were doing and you blamed BitInstant for it.

I would like to nominate the hospital where I work as a donation candidate.

I work at Methodist Hospital of Chicago (http://www.methodistchicago.org/), a non-profit hospital funded entirely by public aid.  Unfortunately, because the hospital is funded this way, it is perpetually lacking the funds to truly provide the care that patients deserve.

I was told today that the hospital has a "Good Samaritan Fund" which directly benefits hospital patients.  For example, many of our patients are homeless and arrive at the hospital without any winter clothing.  The Good Samaritan Fund can be used to provide these patients with winter coats, shoes, and gloves, and in some cases these items become the patients' most valuable possessions.

What do you guys say?  I have an upcoming meeting on Thursday with one of the hospital's financial directors to discuss how this could be arranged if approved by, well, all of you.

Go for it, the joint. If at all possible, promise only $1,000 USD unless you feel BTC100 would result with better talking points. You decide.

Remember, they will never incur a fee for transferring bitcoins into fiat via BitPay, the preferred method for all 501(c)3 charities and the like (possibly globally).

Excellent!  I will make a post after the meeting to let you all know the results.  I'm excited Cheesy

2215  Economy / Services / Enhance your ad with professional voice-over! on: January 08, 2013, 07:00:04 AM
Are you a merchant or retailer looking to enhance your ad?  Describe your product to consumers?  Replicate the movie-phone guy?

My good friend Adam has that voice, the voice...the type of voice that when you hear it, the first thing that comes to your mind is, "That guy's got a career in radio."

And Adam wants to perform professional-quality voice-overs for you!  Check out the sample to hear what Adam can do for you and your company.  The sample is a clip I recorded for him in three takes.

Post in the thread below or contact me via pm to arrange for Adam to record a voice-over for you.  Everything will be negotiated on a case by case basis.

2216  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: High Temps and Beating the Odds on: January 01, 2013, 12:01:33 AM
Holy Balls! I always tried to keep my temps around 70C, so 80-100C is just crazy to me!

When you're running them that hot, there's no variance, is there? You don't run them for a week, and then take them offline for an hour? IIRC, thermal expansion and contraction start to become issues if you're routinely running them up to 100C, down to 20C, and then back up to 100C.

Most of the time there's no variance.  Once in a while it becomes an issue when I end up doing things like switching mining settings or switching between LTC and BTC mining.  It's going to go offline again soon when I do a complete cleaning of my hardware and case.

And yeah, I know...it's awfully hot.
2217  Bitcoin / Mining / High Temps and Beating the Odds on: December 31, 2012, 10:42:06 PM
So, when I first got into mining in June 2011, I initially spent a lot of time worrying about my card temps.  I always made sure to keep them below 80C.

Then, Litecoin mining became more profitable than Bitcoin mining (for my current setup, it is still more profitable).  As a result, my card temps went up along with my mem clocks.  But, I was making so much money at the time that it was worth risking damage to the cards, especially when I'm still sitting on a 4-year in-store warranty.

Long story short, I've been running 2 6970s at +100C temps for 8 months continuously.  Both cards are operating beautifully, and I have not noticed any artifacting or instability.

So, what do you think?  Are my cards beating the odds?  Has anyone else had similar luck safely running cards at +100C temps for long periods of time?

In my opinion, a better alternative punishment is social isolation.  When the little turd starts hitting, he no longer exists.  He'll get the idea pretty quickly,
2219  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Right to endanger? on: December 30, 2012, 01:53:32 AM
An ethics question...fun.

The Golden Rule (i.e. 'Do unto others as you would have done unto you") exists for a good reason, namely that it's likely how justice unfolds in the Universe.

The Golden Rule is beautiful because it is both objective and subjective.  It applies to everyone (objective) and obviously allows for individual interpretation (subjective).

Syndiffeonesis (sameness-in-difference) is the logical principle that any two relands x and y are fundamentally similar, for even if one were to say x is absolutely different from y, then both x and y are still the same in that they share inclusion within the medium of absolute difference.  This logical principle has serious implications on the objective-vs.-subjective debate, and it shows that objectivity and subjectivity are simultaneously the same and different.

So, do people have the right to endanger the lives of others?  Is it OK for me to drive 120 mph in a 55 mph zone?  Is it OK for me to aim a gun loaded with a single bullet at your head and pull the trigger?  Well, what do you think?  One person may answer 'yes,' the other may answer 'no,' and both can still be correct if they abide by the Golden Rule.  Statistical analysis of endangerment does nothing to suggest one way or the other whether something is 'wrong' or not, it only suggests the likelihood of endangerment.
