Dell SecureWorks estimates that CryptoLocker has infected 250,000 victims. The average payout is $300 each, and millions in laundered Bitcoin have been tracked and traced to the ransomware's money runners.

Don't take this lightly. The virus has already infected 250k systems. It is causing massive negative publicity to Bitcoin.

PS: 5.25in floppy disks can be a great way to back up your wallet.dat

Floppy drives are difficult to get these days and not many systems are compatible with it. I'd rather prefer a 2 GB USB drive. As secure as any other media.
22043  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-12-21 New York Times - Into the Bitcoin Mines (in Iceland) on: December 22, 2013, 02:55:35 PM
I don't know much about the legality of Bitcoin in Iceland, but I hope that the government agents will not shut it down.
22044  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Which 'coin' has the ugliest logo? on: December 22, 2013, 02:54:00 PM
I'll vote for Terracoin. Quite tame symbol. Not stylish and nothing unique about it.
22045  Other / Politics & Society / Re: On the topic of climate change... on: December 22, 2013, 02:52:01 PM
But this doesn't matter, of course. Climate change is entirely a political/religious issue.

If you think so, then nothing can be done. If you think that burning trillions of tons of fossil fuels is good for the earth, then go ahead. Burn some more.
22046  Other / Off-topic / Re: Several Silk Road moderators arrested by FBI on: December 22, 2013, 02:13:30 PM
I knew Silk Road 2.0 was some sort of honey pot.

you are probably thinking of the sheep marketplace.

Sheep Marketplace was definitely not a honeypot. Instead it was being run by a scammer. On the other hand, we have enough proof to believe that SR 2.0 was a honeypot.
22047  Other / Off-topic / Re: [Bounty] .05 btc to first person to find me Anchorman 2 Torrent thats real. on: December 22, 2013, 01:52:55 PM
Wait for 6 months. The DVD / Blu-Ray will be released only after that buffer period. Else watch some $hitty Camrip, which is good for nothing.
22048  Other / Off-topic / Re: Does wikipedia remind of you the beggards on this forum? on: December 22, 2013, 01:51:07 PM
why cant wikipedia simply put ads in their sites? they will make loads of money and will stop begging.

No. It is against their policies. They claim that accepting ads will make them more vulnerable to cabal editing.
22049  Other / Politics & Society / Re: What's wrong with unequal wealth distribution? (Was: 2013-12-10 Bitcoin Proves.. on: December 22, 2013, 01:47:26 PM
If wealth distribution were equalized, it would sink to a lower common denominator because once people rely on a set income their drive for wealth is extremely diminished and they don't work as hard, then eventually people starve... but hey it would be equal, so that's... good?

If no one works, then who will grow the food crops? Who will patrol your town? Who will look after the public transportation and other facilities? It is bound to fail.
22050  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Bitcoin Nation on: December 22, 2013, 01:46:03 PM
I do not know where you got your source, and you may be right, but "extortion" costs 10% to 15% of profit, and provides services that are not just protection from theft, vandalism, and other crime. That is actually less than what many people in rest of world pay for police and military, and services like arbitration and business contract dispute.

You misunderstood me. I was saying that 50%+ of all mafia revenues come from extortion and other illegal activities. I didn't said that every business firm pays 50% of their profits as extortion money.
22051  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Bitcoin and Islam on: December 22, 2013, 01:44:16 PM
But I fear that will not happen until they all run out of oil, which is what is allowing them such luxury of doing nothing but worshiping allah.

As long as the OPEC is able to buy up the world leaders, they don't have anything to worry. But I don't know for how long this will sustain them. For example, Saudi Arabia's exploding population is already consuming more than 30% of the oil it produces. For comparison, the No.1 oil producer (Russia) exports more than 75% of its crude (mostly as diesel and gasoline).
22052  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Meanwhile in Ukraine... Revolution. on: December 22, 2013, 01:41:08 PM
In my country the communism failed because people stopped working really hard , they had their wages guaranteed , it was better to not learn anything in school because the jobs of professors or medics weren't paid accordingly , and because in communism everyone was supposed to be equal but some were more "equal" then others.

Also that hate for intellectuals and and appointing in key places relatives or communist zealots with only grade 4 education won't do any good.

Could you please re-post this information here?

I do not think it was lazy or parasite races that brought down USSR. Communism makes everyone lazy parasites. I believe what brought it down was massive increase in military spending during last decade of its existence, where too much economic production was diverted into military, away from agriculture and rest of economy, which also resulted in large unsustainable debt. It is why I believe USA also began its path to empire collapse as soon as it began Iraq war.

May be. Some experts claim that it was the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan which resulted in the disintegration of the USSR.
22053  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Former CIA chief: Snowden should be “hanged by the neck until dead” on: December 22, 2013, 01:38:14 PM
Anyone would risk to guess a number of how many civil servants have a need to know/top secret level just like manning or snowden? I am guessing in the 100K or close to it.

No. I think it is a very small number. Manning didn't had default access to the information. If my guess is right, he hacked in to the system to get all those info. Still that doesn't make him a criminal.
22054  Other / Politics & Society / Re: As a deflationary currency, is Bitcoin the right answer? on: December 22, 2013, 01:36:26 PM
If your income doubles and my income doubles, then the gap also doubles. 2x-2y= 2(x-y)
(and we are both happy)

It's not the gap that matters, it's the basic standard of living of the people with the lowest income. They will be happy too if their income doubles - they don't care if the gap has doubled, as long as they can improve their own situation

The quality of life of the poorest is being improved all the time, simply by the impact of technology on the world.

This is a very important point to be noted. People who want equal income for all actually destroys the livelihood of the poor. Poor will be much better in an open economy with lower taxes.
22055  Other / Politics & Society / Re: On the topic of climate change... on: December 22, 2013, 01:34:52 PM
Nuclear power is useless because our methods of building and maintaining the plants currently involve burning massive amounts of fossil fuels.

No. Definitely wrong. Do you have any proof for this? The energy required for constructing a nuclear power plant is almost similar to that required to build thermal plants.
22056  Other / Politics & Society / Re: On the topic of climate change... on: December 21, 2013, 03:58:53 PM
But don't they say we are now on year seventeen of no increase in temperature?  That's contrary to all the predictions, right?

From where did you get the idea of 17 years of static temperature?

22057  Other / Politics & Society / Re: As a deflationary currency, is Bitcoin the right answer? on: December 21, 2013, 03:17:11 PM
To follow your point to its logical conclusion: Bitcoin takes power away from bankers and financiers. It can't be seized, and its value can't be eroded via QE and rigged interest rates. All this wealth that was previously being sucked up into financial services becomes available to more productive members of society. I believe this will reduce income disparity.

OK. I'd agree with that. The removal of the bankers and financiers will help us to reduce the income disparity. I can't predict the magnitude of this, but I hope it will be significant.
22058  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Former CIA chief: Snowden should be “hanged by the neck until dead” on: December 21, 2013, 03:13:54 PM
Non of those are treason against the US.

So what? Do you think killing millions of innocent people is less serious than leaking a bunch of spying documents? You know what? This is exactly why the majority of people in this world hate the Americans.
22059  Other / Off-topic / Re: Several Silk Road moderators arrested by FBI on: December 21, 2013, 03:09:58 PM
Or maybe Satoshi is DPR, we can't know Grin

That is a ridiculous argument, which has been dealt with before. Satoshi was an intelligent programmer and statistician. DPR was more or less intelligent, but he has no background in statistics and economics.
22060  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-12-20 VICE - Is Vancouver the Bitcoin Capital of Canada? on: December 21, 2013, 03:08:27 PM
Lol... I'd say Vancouver is the Bitcoin capital of the world. The city is having more Bitcoiners than any other major metropolitan area.
