2221  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Help for someone new on: September 04, 2020, 10:03:56 PM
What I do not understand in the above process, the hashing of the current block surely only works if the data inside the block is complete and unchanging. If the data is changing the data hash would keep changing. But surely if a new transaction is made, new data is being added to the block and that data is causing the hash to change.
Miners won't necessarily "care" about any new transaction being made... Especially when there are more transactions in their mempool than can actually "fit" in a block. Generally, they'll only try and include it if the money to made from including it, is worth more than the "cost" of including it.

This is why you often need to pay $$$ in fees if you want "next block"... it makes your transaction more "attractive" to the miners and gives them an incentive to include it... whereas, if you pay the minimum 1 sat/vbyte... you end up in the big pile at the bottom of the mempool with the other 10,000+ transactions waiting for days Tongue
2222  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin transaction pending for quite long on: September 04, 2020, 09:52:06 PM
It's more than just low transaction fee.

The parents that have much lower transaction fees are all unconfirmed and formed a long series of unconfirmed transactions.
This is the price people pay to have "instant" withdrawal services from exchanges and gambling sites etc... They want to see the transaction appear "instantly", so these services don't batch transactions... and in times of heavy network activity (generally during large price movements), users end up stuck in the middle/end of these large chains of unconfirmed transactions as the sites start pumping out transactions spending unconfirmed change... Undecided

It doesn't help that some of them are even more shitty and then "cheap-out" on fees despite charging the user ~0.00050000 BTC for a "withdrawal fee"... only to use a fraction of that to pay for network fees Roll Eyes
2223  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: imported public key bitcoin wallet with private key! on: September 04, 2020, 09:36:22 PM
Based on the information I have read in the forum that blockchain wallet is a non-custodial, the who owns the private key owns the blockchain wallet and no one had access on it except the owner of the private keys or the seed phrase of the wallet. Bitcoin wallet can generate public keys from xpub which should not be disclose to anyone. The generated public keys had also corresponding private key (xpriv) and this could be use when one like to import bitcoin public key to other platform or bitcoin wallet.
Your understanding is a little bit "backwards"... you start with a private key... and derive the public key from the private key. Although most wallets these days tend to work with "seeds" and "master" private (xpriv) and "master" public (xpub) keys.

Now, what will happen to the imported bitcoin public address with its corresponding private key to other bitcoin wallet if the imported public wallet has a balance? Could I spend the balance when it was only being imported to the new bitcoin wallet?
If you import the private keys from one wallet to another, then the wallets will effectively be "clones"... they'll see exactly the same transaction history/balance... and either wallet will be able to spend any coins controlled by those private keys.
2224  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Very small phone for hardware multisig. on: September 04, 2020, 09:20:11 PM
No real reason why not. Just looking for ideas.
Threw this out there and outside of me nobody really went wow great idea.
And lets face it. It's not cheap.
That would probably have been the one downside I would have pointed out... it's not the cheapest phone that you could use. Tongue

I really wish I could use an OTG cable and my coldcard with my phone, but not going to happen.
Why not? Apparently Bluewallet is supported, which is mobile only... so I assume it works with OTG... is it because you're using it in "airgap" mode with the microSD card? Huh
2225  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Stuck on "Preparing Database" and Armory never shows "Online" on: September 04, 2020, 09:08:48 PM
The trick is to find what is being reported as the "datadir" within Bitcoin Core... and then use that value with Armory.

Have a look at the following menu option in Bitcoin Core: "Windows -> Information":

Then copy the "Datadir" value to the "Bitcoin Home Dir" setting in Armory... That will guarantee that Armory uses the already downloaded/synced Bitcoin Core data correctly.

NOTE: DO NOT use the "Blocksdir"!!
2226  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Need help recover bc wallet ready to give from min 200$ to 20% depends on help on: September 04, 2020, 10:29:39 AM
As I have read the discussion with replies it seems that OP had solve the issue with the help of @HCP.
No, he didn't... he is adamant he still has funds somewhere... so his problem isn't "solved" as such.

Quote
Is there any way we can find it here how you do it? I was amaze by the process that has been done and hopefully there is a guide for us to know and follow.
There wasn't anything special done...

1. Download and fully sync Bitcoin Core
2. Shutdown Bitcoin Core
3. Swap "new" wallet.dat with "old" wallet.dat
4. Start Bitcoin Core with "rescan" option enabled
5. Wait

Bitcoin Core then rescanned all the block data looking for transactions relating to the "old" wallet.dat... it found 2 transactions, one in... one out... and a final balance of 0 BTC Undecided

There was no password hacking required, as the "old" wallet.dat had no password.

OP has been attempting to use data recovery software on the old drive with hopes to find another wallet.dat/wallet file... there is also a possibility they had funds in a completely different wallet, but OP cannot remember what it might have been... it could even have been a "brain wallet" or web-wallet in which case there is a chance that there never was a "local" wallet file to find/recover. Undecided
2227  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: "HCP's ongoing experiment of the BotHIVE.io Trading Platform"™ on: September 04, 2020, 12:57:09 AM
My biggest issue with these charts and the "10000% ROI" claim... is that it is obviously all "backtest" results... (and labelled as such, so credit for that at least!)

The bot and platform were only available from around April this year. So this historical data going back to the beginning of 2019 is obviously not representative of what an actual user would have received if they had invested on day 1 of it actually being available to users.

When I switched to Manticore around 1st May... I was around -0.009 BTC from where I started started on the new platform... which would have meant I started using Manticore with a "bankroll" of ~0.0344 BTC... today, I am at 0.047306 BTC "bankroll"...

So, it's made approximately ~0.0129 BTC since the start of May from a starting balance of 0.0344 BTC... which is about a 37.5% increase over basically 4 months (with a couple of big 30% losses inbetween)... which is obviously nowhere near this mythical 10000% return. Roll Eyes

I'm just glad I switched bots... Tongue

2228  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Very small phone for hardware multisig. on: September 03, 2020, 11:28:16 PM
General consensus here seems to be no.
I was just trying to come up with the 2nd multisig device that did not involve my laptop or tablet but rather something smaller.
I don't see anything inherently "wrong" with the idea... like the others have said, it's not really any different to any other phone/device... except that it is quite small.

So, if it matches your requirements, why not? Huh
2229  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: A ransom attack on Trezor's and KeepKey's passphrase handling on: September 03, 2020, 11:08:27 PM
Also I wonder, if the attack targets passphrase... can't the user simply reset the device and restore from the seed with new/own passphrase?!
No... the private keys are derived using the passphrase... so, if the device was already "attacked", any private keys/addresses that had already generated/used, would have been generated using the "unknown" passphrase generated by the malware...

So, resetting the device, restoring from seed and setting up a new/own passphrase means that you would be generating completely different addresses.

It's basically abusing the "plausible deniability" functionality, whereby any passphrase is "valid", but generates a different set of private keys/addresses.
2230  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: BTC Wallet Tracing on: September 03, 2020, 10:59:43 PM
I am helping a friend who bought btc earlier in 2010 and now he only have this btc address and do not remember from where he bought it
Don't have access to the wallet or account
If he bought coins, and then moved them to a different address (ie. moved them off the exchange)... then the exchange is not going to be able to assist. The fulfilled their part of the deal when the coins where sent.

If they didn't move the coins from the exchange, then they might be able to recover access to the account... providing that the exchange is still functioning and they have access to the same email address used to register.

You could try: https://www.walletexplorer.com/ and see if the address is linked to any of the known exchanges... it's a long shot tho.

I had this bitcoin wallet address 1DBU8EeoJcTNkfjz6hTTjR1RAH3DEzh9YS

But cannot remember the exchange or email i used when i signed up
I'm not sure that is an exchange address...  If you look at the list of transactions here: https://www.walletexplorer.com/address/1DBU8EeoJcTNkfjz6hTTjR1RAH3DEzh9YS

You'll find they all end up sending change back to the same address, like this example: https://www.walletexplorer.com/txid/75dffb286896b9a1b86eb49864a22fb32787ddc5ef2e0ddea43f41f42248793d

That is not generally how exchanges work. So, it seems that this was a "single key" wallet... possibly something like an "imported" Electrum wallet, or perhaps MultiBit?
2231  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Forgot order of my 12 seed phrase for my electrum wallet on: September 03, 2020, 10:38:05 PM
What I noticed is the following statement :

seedrecover.py is a seed recovery tool which can take a seed with one or more mistakes in it, and recover the correct seed if not too many mistakes have been made.

How much is actually "too many mistakes"? Would this mean that in some cases it might be impossible to come up with the correct word order or that the process would just take much longer?
That's actually the original wording from the seedrecovery docs... AFAIK, that version doesn't offer "word order rearrangement", but is more suited to finding either a missing word (or two) or an incorrect word (or two)...

Obviously, the more mistakes the longer it will take on any given set of hardware... or, to put it another way, you will require more powerful hardware to be able to find more mistakes in a similar timeframe.

When you know the 12 words, just not the order... it's actually a lot easier as the total search space is a lot smaller... and you can kind of "shortcut" the process by discounting a lot of the options because the checksum will be invalid, so you don't need to bother doing any deriving of keys/addresses (which involves "costly" hash calculations etc)
2232  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Fake Electrum version 4.0 and hardware wallets on: September 03, 2020, 10:28:49 PM
Guess I'll have to hunt it down another way.
There was another unfortunate user who recently posted in another thread who handily noted down the malware URL in a screenshot: https://imgur.com/a/mvSIn9T

You could see if it is still live...
2233  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S Current Shipping Time and Carrier? on: September 03, 2020, 10:25:51 PM
Yeah... I vaguely recall that mine was sent via DHL... and I wasn't home at the time so had to go to the DHL depot with ID to sign for and collect it... Couriers in this country really seem to struggle when delivering to apartment buildings, as most don't have secure delivery storage or "live in" building managers to hold packages for residents Undecided

2235  Economy / Reputation / Re: Flag suchmoon ,he is a communist supporting communist ideology on: September 03, 2020, 10:18:03 PM
"Freedom of speech" does not equal "you're free to say whatever you like
Personally I like the concept (or wording) of "protected speech" vs. "free speech",
I agree, but would appreciate it if you could be a bit more careful when snipping quotes Wink

Freedom of speech can be "you are free to say whatever you like"
But everyone else is also free to ignore people who say whatever they like, if it is just trash.
Exactly... and I will defend your right to say whatever you want... just don't be upset if/when I either disagree with it or "ignore" you.

spy100 wants to run around calling people trolls and "commies", fine... "care factor zero" Roll Eyes I just do not like the way people trot out the "freedom of speech" line without realising that it is a two way street. They can say whatever they like, but then, so can everyone else.
2236  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Nano Ledger S Won't Turn On Help on: September 03, 2020, 10:08:19 PM
If display is fully dimmed you can not be sure whether device is on or off.  I sent you PM.
Normally, I would say that on Windows, which I think jerry0 is using, if you don't get the "USB device connected/disconnected" sound when connecting or disconnecting the Ledger... and nothing is showing in the device manager... then it is almost guaranteed that the device is not working or powering up properly.

However... I believe the Nano S doesn't actually show up as a device until after you have entered a PIN... which is simply impossible when the screen is not working Sad
2237  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: I need Help finding or recovering bitcoins off an old hard drive on: September 03, 2020, 10:27:34 AM
au contraire mon amie!! I rather it this way which means the time frame is correct ( I didn't make it up recently during my search/ research) as it predates such seeds which make it more likely to be a blockchain password!!
Possibly... but being a simple BIP39/Electrum seed would make things a LOT easier Undecided

I hope I didn't set it up with my old Verizon email as I stopped using them a while ago!!!! :-( and I can't use their email any more!!
If so, then there is pretty much no way to recover... as far as I know, no-one has ever been able to recover if they've lost use of the email as blockchain.com can't/won't change it...

Quote
any danger of being monitored or hacked if I enter the pass phrase live online? any precautions I can take??
No more danger than anything you usually do online... there isn't anything you can really do except make sure you're connected to the correct website and you're fairly certain that their are no keyloggers/malware etc on your machine... possibly using a LiveOS on a USB stick with a clean install of Linux might help ensure there is no malware etc...
2238  Economy / Reputation / Re: Flag suchmoon ,he is a communist supporting communist ideology on: September 01, 2020, 11:22:28 PM
Flag suchmoon ,he is a communist supporting communist ideology ,also he and his Chinese communists gang is  trolling anyone how believes in democracy and freedom of speech .
Not saying suchmoon is either a communist or supports communist ideology... but would the ability to speak in support of communist ideology not be protected by this concept of "freedom of speech" of that you seem quite keen on? Huh

"Freedom of speech" does not equal "you're free to say whatever you like, as long as it aligns with my personal beliefs and opinions"... I believe it is more the famous quote of Evelyn Beatrice Hall:
"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it"

The fact that you seem hell bent on destroying anything and/or anyone who dares to disagree with you and your beliefs is in no way aligned with the concepts of either democracy nor freedom of speech.

2240  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Fake Electrum version 4.0 and hardware wallets on: September 01, 2020, 10:46:02 PM
Why not install an old version of Electrum below Electrum 3.3 and connect it to any infected server. It will ask to update the Electrum to Electrum 4.0.
You only receive the "update" message when you attempt to send a transaction... So, it could get quite expensive and you could end up wasting a bit of BTC in transaction fees trying to find a infected "bad" server (they're not "infected", they're just "bad") Tongue
