2301  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Bryant Coleman's demography thread on: June 03, 2014, 06:15:51 PM
A thread about bitcoin adoptions for different countries , age of users , and daily use would be far more interesting Smiley.

There are several of them already here in Bitcointalk.

OK.... my first post.

Demography of Russia for January-April 2014.

Total number of births: 619,555 (increase of 1.6%)
Total number of deaths: 647,824 (decrease of 2.4%)

Total natural population growth: -28,269

Biggest increases in birth rate: Chukotka (+22.9%), Altai Republic (+9.0%), Sakhalin (+7.7%), Tyumen (+7.2%).
Biggest decreases in birth rate: Novgorod (-9.5%), Nenetskyi (-8.7%), Tver (-5.7%).

Biggest increases in death rate: Republic of Crimea (+9.3%), Amur (+7.8%), Sevastopol Gorsovet (+6.3%).
Biggest decreases in death rate: Sakhalin (-9.7%), Arkhangelsk (-9.7%), Tver (-9.5%).

How do these stats compare with the overall trends for Russia? Is Russia a declining population?

Also are those states with the largest increases in birth rate culturally different than the majority Russian population? Are there trends leading to towards different cultural groups becoming a new majority in Russia? If you're in tune with Russia at all, how does the population feel about this if it's the case?
2302  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Life after Silk Road: how the darknet drugs market is booming on: June 03, 2014, 06:11:05 PM

<< Buying drugs and weapons online is far easier since the closure of Silk Road in 2013, after a dozen new sites have taken its place. >>

As long as drugs are prohibited the rewards fr operating this type of market are going to be greater than the risk of running them. At least I can imagine that's how people who have the will and capability of running such a market are going to see it.

And after reading how careless DPR was and how his actions lead to his arrest, I can't help but think anyone who attempts to do a similar project in the future will be appropriately cautious with their identity. I'd say it's far more likely that a site would go down due to a hack or a theft than due to law enforcement, despite their success with the original silk road.
2303  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Let's be honest. I love Bitcoin because... on: June 03, 2014, 06:03:17 PM
I think a lot of people share the same core reasoning with regard to why the love bitcoin. For me and presumably most other people the biggest one is that it enables me to have complete control over part of my financial resources. There's always the risk of bank accounts or online wallets closing your accounts and freezing your funds over reasons that are beyond your control. Not having to worry about other people taking your money is very important to me. As long as you've properly secured your wallet you have nothing to worry about.

Another huge thing is the transferring of value worldwide pretty much instantly(depending on whether you wait for confirmations or not). As I've spent a lot of the last 10 years of my life outside of my home country and now that I have bitcoin it's made things a lot easier and cheaper.
2304  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Hunger Games style Thai protests on: June 03, 2014, 05:54:22 PM
This will not have any effect on the army. They have no intention of holding democratic elections in the near future (which will definitely see Yingluck returning to power). And most of the general population is also indifferent to this, as the security situation has improved dramatically.

I agree with you that it won't have any effect, but I disagree with you saying that they have no intentions of holding elections. They do not want to hold power. And there is no way Yingluck is coming back. Her party, maybe, probably depending on what reforms take place. But I'm pretty sure Yingluck is done for.
2305  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Free & Equal = Anchor Loses It, Speaks Brutal Truth On MSM on: June 03, 2014, 05:48:49 PM
It is obviously an older video since the DOW was showing around $11k. I believe it is now over $16k.

The huge debt will destroy the US.

Bitcoin user affected (with huge gains in USD value).

Why would a debt denominated is USD destroy the US? I'm not sure I understand that point, if anything they should borrow as much as they can while still maintaining a semblance of credibility. That seems like the rational thing to do unless I'm missing something. Which is quite possible...

when you borrow and can't pay what you borrow back, you lose sovereignty
hence banking dynasties

As long as they can print the money they'll be able to pay it back, they are the ones in control here. As long as people are willing to lend then they are alright. It would take a lot more than the current debt to really have any sort of effect I would think.

The Fed prints money and loans it to the states. the states lose sovereignty because they themselves do not have the ability to print money

Ah, I see your point. I wasn't really thinking about in on a state to federal level. I was thinking more internationally where borrowing from China and such benefits the US in the long run. I guess it's a balancing act and it comes down to having a government competent enough to not screw it up...
2306  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: FOSS Algo Trading Platform on: June 03, 2014, 05:43:24 PM
Awesome. Good to see a f/oss project that has to do with trading. I hope enough people see this and you get enough volunteers to finish it up.
2307  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: okcoin real volume on: June 03, 2014, 05:39:57 PM
Wow, that is a massive share of volume. I had no idea that they were so huge.

Does anyone know if bitstamp is following price raises on okcoin or if it's the other way around. If okcoin is following bitstamp then it's not really anything to worry about as far as manipulation goes. At least not a huge issue anyway.
2308  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Bitcoin's biggest systematic/systemic risk: Satoshi's stash on: June 03, 2014, 05:37:12 PM
Actually I agree with you. I think people really understate how much of a spectre Satoshi's coins are over bitcoin. We've all sort of assumed that he's just going to leave his coins untouched forever. But if bitcoin is really going to compete on a global scale, how do you answer the question of what the hell would happen if Satoshi himself moved even one satoshi from his stash? Even if bitcoin's price stabilises it's always going to be the knife hanging above bitcoin's head. I'd like Satoshi to benefit from bitcoin as much as the next person, but just the idea that he could be moving a million coins is always going to be an issue.
2309  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Divorce's new weapon on: June 03, 2014, 05:04:21 PM
This is a bit silly considering anyone with access to money can put it anywhere. Gold, silver, cash ect.

It also doesn't mean that you still won't owe your ex-spouse the money from the judgement. I don't really see how bitcoin changes much is that regard.

What would be funny is lots of family law firms accepting bitcoin payments. Tongue

Exactly...if all your liquid assets quickly vanish in the midst of a divorce, you would get slapped with a judgement, and your wages would be garnished.   You would end up having to pay it back anyways, unless you plan on never working another W2 job in your life...

Yeah, you would need to have assets completely hidden from the start. Where you're the only one who knows about them. I guess with some foresight and planning you could do this with bitcoin. But most people don't go in to a marriage hiding a large amount of their wealth from their spouse. You could have a swiss bank account or gold just as easily. But maybe bitcoin has an edge in this regard since you can just keep a paper wallet and no one would be the wiser.
2310  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If Bitcoin Wants Serious Investment, It NEEDS Options Trading on: June 03, 2014, 04:59:54 PM
There is already enough speculation with Bitcoin. We don't Need another tool for more speculators, even if you call them Investors instead of speculators.
You want to invest in Bitcoin? Invest the little time that is needed to implement a solution for your customers to pay with Bitcoin. That's all Bitcoin really need.
The goal of Bitcoins is to become a currency, not to stay a commodity.

QFT. Speculation means volatility. What we need is a slow but steady rise in price instead of the roller coaster ride.
Options trading is sort of a betting market, it has very minimal, if at all effect on actual market.

Yeah, aren't most option trades done on a sort of peer to peer basis with the broker facilitating it?

I'd like to be able to have the option to buy options, you can hedge your risk if you feel that you need to.
2311  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What city has the highest amount of bitcoin users? on: June 03, 2014, 04:57:40 PM
I found a few sources that might help narrow down the question:

Sourceforge downloads for the bitcoin client:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/bitcoin/files/stats/map?dates=2014-01-01+to+2014-06-03

  • US
  • China
  • Russia
  • Germany
  • UK

Google Trends data for "bitcoin" in 2014:
http://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=bitcoin&date=1%2F2014%2012m&cmpt=q

  • Vancouver
  • San Francisco
  • Toronto
  • New York

A list/map of areas with high concentrations of bitcoin full nodes:
https://getaddr.bitnodes.io/

  • US
  • Germany
  • UK
  • Canada
  • France

A map of places that accept bitcoin:
http://coinmap.org/

  • Europe
  • New York
  • San Francisco

This data is informal and really just based on peeking at the sources for a moment. It does not consider population density or GDP of any of these countries.

Here's my layman's rank based on this data:

1. New York, US
2. San Francisco, US
3. Paris, France
4. Central Europe (Germany, Austria, Hungary)
5. Melbourne & Brisbane, AU
6. UK

Good analysis. New York and San Fran seem to be the consensus for most popular bitcoin cities. San Fran probably has more btc user per capita but NYC is huge of course so it makes up for it in volume of users(I'm assuming this anyway).

2312  Other / Off-topic / Re: PC Gaming Thread on: June 03, 2014, 04:44:50 PM

You mean starcraft? Starcrat is unbalanced, which leads to 'spamming' keys. Supreme commander is the continuation of Total Annihilation, and it plays a bit differently. It's a lot less twitchy and lot more strategic imo, but that's not to say it doesn't have it's flaws.

Sup Com/ Sup Com FA allow you to pre-plan through templates, this helps you focus on whats going on rather than having to balance running defences/offences with building resources. You can just place the templates down and get to it.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of spamming keys at all. Pre-plan templates sound good.

If you like medieval games then I'm sure would love to play Mount and blade if you haven't already. Mount And Blade: Warband is my favorite which I would recommend anyone who likes the traditional RPG and medieval game. If you enjoy history then you could further the experience by installing a few mods which just makes the game feel like a real simulator.

Other than my suggestion, I would recommend getting Morrowind and Skyrim.

Actually yeah I played the demo of that a while ago and I really liked it. Thanks for reminding me about that game. I'll add it to my list of games to play.
2313  Other / Off-topic / Re: IF YOU HAD 1,000,000 DOLLARS WHAT WOULD YOU BUY??? on: June 03, 2014, 01:40:21 PM
One million isn't going to do very much for a lot of people living in modern western societies. You could if you really wanted to make a million dollars go far and sustain yourself if you were willing to live in a different country where your dollars have a much higher purchasing power. But a lot of people aren't willing to do that.

In many countries, rich foreigners get targeted by gangs and end up in the river.

Who can live in Thailand for years?  You'll get lonely despite the hookups with European tourists and even the "rent-a-girlfriends" go home to their village for some arranged marriage.

I've lived in Thailand for years. Lots of people live here for years. It's a pretty high quality of life. There's lots of different areas in Thailand that cater to different styles of living. One million dollars here isn't going to make you some kind of target. There's very little crime here. Plus no one knows how much money you have or don't have.

well unless you drive a lambo around  Wink

Don't some people import the parts and assemble them in country in order to avoid the massive tax on imported sports cars? Or did they end up clamping down on that?
2314  Other / Off-topic / Re: You know you're obsessed with Bitcoin when... on: June 03, 2014, 01:36:33 PM
You check r/bitcoin and bitcointalk before you check your email when you wake up.
2315  Other / Off-topic / Re: PC Gaming Thread on: June 03, 2014, 01:34:20 PM
Get some Sup Com FA on that list and some UT2k4/UTC and you'll have yourself one hell of a list.
Planetary Annihilation?

These look good as well. Sup Com FA isn't too expensive either so I'll probably try that before PA I think.

Careful. The eco in sup com fa is confusing at first. A lot of people can't handle a supply / demand resource system. Personally, I think it's best (as in reality, you don't have an infinite amount of resource storage).

How would you say it is compared to SC1? I played that a lot like fifteen years ago or something like that. Does it require a high APM to be good, or is it more strategy?
2316  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: Nem stake on: June 03, 2014, 01:31:28 PM
How did it work exactly? I know there were some kind of tiers or something. Where the earlier tiers more valuable than the later ones? How many coins is in a tier? Did everyone get a tier for free by posting? Do you think it's worth buying these stakes even now?
2317  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [NXT] Nxt - Official Thread on: June 03, 2014, 01:26:04 PM
The new design of http://www.nxtcommunity.org/ is just amazing. I'm very optimistic that NXT will certainly be the leading crypto currency in the future.
Looks great indeed!  Smiley

But why so much focus on the "nerd" side of Nxt? Is that how new people want to be seen and associated with? As Nxt Nerds?
I think it's a funny part and it surely can be part of the website, but this is to much IMHO.

I just can't take it anymore...  The stock nerd photos on the nxtcommunity site bug me every time I go there.   Using pictures of people dressed up as 'nerds' rather than actual people is rather lame.

I agree 100%. We need to change this as soon as possible. Or at least set up a poll to see if the majority of the community want to keep this or not! It's really annoying and turns me off...I dont even want to go to the site. Please, let's at least consider a poll.

Oh god, lol. I'm just learning about nxt and I had to see what you're talking about there. It almost looks like a subtle hack to poke fun or an April Fools joke Tongue

2319  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Can the receiver send back to your address? on: June 03, 2014, 12:15:13 PM
As long as I have my seed will I always be able to get coins back on an address that I've sent out coins on?

Yes, but this is a bad habit for your friend. If they don't know any better, they may think EVERYBODY uses Electrum, and one day they try to send back to a friend to the address they received bitcoins from and BAM... "umm, why did you send to that address? That was a payment address for xyz service... it's not my address." and then you have to contact the site to try and get your bitcoins back.

So I would recommend against doing this. If I were you, send them a separate address for returns. Just make sure it's from your Electrum seed.

Yeah, it's definitely not "Bitcoin best practice" for someone just to send money back to the same address that they received money from.
2320  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Can the receiver send back to your address? on: June 03, 2014, 12:14:08 PM
In theory yes this should be possible. However I would never recommend this. The receiving party can't know where these coins came from, you know it's Electrum and you own all the keys but it could have been an exchange or a shared wallet service.

Yeah, but with electrum they should come back right? I know there are online wallets that you can't actually send back that way and it's caused people some problems in the past. I'm just curious if electrum operates differently.

I do think all services should allow you to specify a specific withdrawal address but I've seen some that do not and just say that they send back to the same address that you originally sent them coins with. It's not a very good practice and it made me curious about how electrum worked in that regard.

Thanks.
