That also excludes the plan to weld two pieces together to require one to break the piece in order to redeem the keys for the same reason.

Maybe a spinner ring? That or a spinner ring with a small decorative hole so it never shows the whole private key. You could easily access the private key by spinning it around and writing down the private key 1 letter at a time? Grin

Its a neat idea design wise, and something I'd definitely be interested in doing. It doesn't really solve the problem of making it 100% apparent that someone has observed the keys and they are no longer secure. Like I said, this issue is just for incrementally prefunded pieces should I decide to make them.

I'll just stick to personal wallets until I figure out a better method.
242  Economy / Reputation / Re: Indisputable Evidence of Corruption on: June 25, 2019, 01:23:30 AM
Going to have to 3rd Tec and Quickseller on this one, its not a funny joke. False accusations that are not 100% obviously a joke are bad people stuff.

*edit*
Not leaving negative feedback over this, but it was annoying enough to consider it. People make mistakes with taboos in discourse communities, whether you learn that a bunch of people would be pissed off by this type of thing will decide if its a lesson learned or it becomes a problem.

Daily Update!

I've had pretty much nothing but bad ideas, but the sooner I get them out of the way, the quicker I'll get to the good ones!

I have two things in mind, first custom provided encrypted keys that are sent and engraved into the piece. The keys can remain exposed as an engraving since they need a password anyway, and the piece just serves as a damage resistant and discreet paper wallet.

The prefunded and obscured model are likely more desirable to collectors as they'd have a resale value similar to funded coins. I'm not super thrilled about knowing the private keys, as to date I still don't entirely trust Casascius etc, but it'll likely come to it if I can figure out the last piece of the puzzle. My idea was to physically melt a slightly lower melting temperature alloy of the main material into the engraving, so to expose and redeem the keys, you'd need to physically melt the covering metal. With that idea I run into the issue of not everyone owning a torch capable of doing it, and a capable jeweler being able to re-cover the keys after exposing them. That also excludes the plan to weld two pieces together to require one to break the piece in order to redeem the keys for the same reason.

I can still go ahead with the encrypted private key plan, though I'm still stuck on obtaining encrypted minikey private keys.

It's less powerful than my phone though...

I'm at octo core 3ghz arm hauwei. Why can't they pack something like thst into them? One plus must use a cortex arm cpu at a similar processing speed to mine thst they could use...

It's become a bit of a hybrid between a low power and medium power device, I'm wondering where they'll plan to go... They make great products though.

The phone is at least 10x the cost no? RPi tries not to stray away from the $35 price point. If I'm not mistaken, their goal is to get people with no budget a little dev tool to tinker with while approaching the specs of something more than a dev tool with each new revision. Toyota could make a car just like a Lamborghini, but half million dollar cars aren't their market.
245  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin's huge carbon footprint - deal breaker on: June 24, 2019, 01:46:49 PM
Something to consider, carbon footprint only applies if you assume the power generation method is carbon emitting. Driving an electric car is carbon emitting if the generation station providing the electricity is coal powered. Its a deal breaker to continue burning fossil fuels for a substantial amount of power, regardless of whether its for Bitcoin or your microwave.

I'm not a power hippie, but my point is that its an inherent problem of power production, not Bitcoin.

With a car that consumes 1 liter of fuel, 30% of the energy goes to useful work - the car goes forward, while 70% goes to waste heat.

With Bitcoin, for every liter of fuel burned 99.999999999999999999999999% goes to waste heat.  Only .0000000000000000000000001% goes to the miner that guessed the correct number and made the next block - which is the 'useful work' being done by mining.

It would be VERY, VERY hard for you to invent a less efficient machine than Bitcoin mining.  It is a most spectacularly horrible idea.  Well, only horrible for those who like the planet.  If your goal is to fuck up the Earth, then Bitcoin mining is your best friend.

The goal of Bitcoin mining is network security, not the block reward.
246  Other / Meta / Re: [ALTS] What is the procedure for registering alts? on: June 24, 2019, 01:35:11 PM
Yes - that is Talk Merit, but merit has died down a bit as a topic, so I don't use that much now. The English language project is still active though.

Actually alts can be a bit of a nuisance. For example, it is against the rules for me to post in this thread as Jet Cash if the post is close to a Baronets post, so I have to keep changing my login to reply. If I need to make any more posts, I'll login using Firefox - I'm using Brave at the moment.

Does anyone know when you can add a profile comment these days? Is it a rank thing, or is it activity/time limited?

Thats where you edit to get a bit of text under your avatar. I'm not sure if its rank restricted though, but you can give it a check.

You've done plenty with regards to alt transparency. People don't have an issue with alt accounts, they have an issue with people self escrowing or self bidding on auctions and such. Having two sets of PM inboxes, one for personal and one for business is pretty understandable.
247  Other / Meta / Re: Who else agrees that self moderation of ANN threads shouldn't be possible? on: June 23, 2019, 11:39:37 PM

There is an entire subforum designated for altcoin ANN threads, and another for service ANN threads. If an ANN thread is posted outside of these two subs, they should be moved by a moderator. If there is a thread that is not an ANN thread (except an “unmoderated” thread), it should be moved outside of these two subs.

If the OPs suggestion were to get implemented, it seems a simple solution would be to prevent self moderated threads in either of these subs.

I stand corrected. Last time I checked in depth people spammed their announcement threads everywhere they could to try to stay at the top of any page they could, including Altcoin Discussion. It looks like the section is cleaned up quite a bit, with ANN threads actually in the ANN section, so that would work reasonably well.
248  Other / Meta / Re: Who else agrees that self moderation of ANN threads shouldn't be possible? on: June 23, 2019, 08:52:47 PM
If it quacks like a duck... stay away from the project. Unless its a project about ducks.

The forum cant differentiate between a thread with [ANN] in the title and one without. It can tell the difference between boards, and designate which self moderated threads are allowed in.

If a project looks sketchy stay away. If a self moderated ANN thread is a warning sign to you, then assume the project is dangerous and move forward cautiously if you like.
249  Economy / Collectibles / Re: Wearable Keys on: June 23, 2019, 02:05:35 AM
I always meant to do something similar, although I just bought jewelery stamps. I had the exact same problem where I couldn't find lower case letters. I did eventually find some, but in a weird font & 3x as expensive. I thought that would be funny to share. Why the hell are lower case letters so hard to find!? Anyway, this is an awesome idea. Many kudos from someone who meant to do this but never went through with it.

Stamps are doable to, but its really difficult to get them uniform. You either need to stamp the metal while its flat and hope that you don't leave any toolmarks while forming, or get the weird letter punches with a curve to them. Those are super expensive. I tried using stamps a while ago and I'd get 10 characters in before stamping something at a 2 degree angle off of what it should have been and ruining the end product. I might try to just use smaller font and just make it really obvious the difference between capital R and lowercase R by size, but I'd really like to find a lowercase solution instead. I'll get one completely finished and then decide from there whether its worth getting a jig plate milled.

Anyway, I'm at the point where problems that I'm running into are minor inconveniences, not major problems, so I'm thankful for that. I'm ordering some additional golds on monday so I can play around with alloys. I know its awful stupid... but I have a theory on making purple gold work.

From Google Images Purple and White Gold:

Also, why the inconsistent weight on the bars?
3.9 to 3.2 ??

Was told it had to do with the 3D printed mold and shrinkage.
Maybe someone with more knowledge or experience with these could tell more....

Lots of factors at play. I can't tell without seeing the back of the bars, but if its a one piece mold where the impression is pressed in one face of sand and the back is left open, the thicknesses of the bars will vary a bit. You can sand them down to make the backs level, but there will still be some difference. If they are two part molds, there will be a consistent volume, but there will still be some variation due to different temperature metal being poured, atmospheric temperature, etc.  The density of the metal changes depending on the temperature. Imagine the difference of mass between 1 liter of ice vs 1 liter of water. Silver at 2000 degrees vs 2100 degrees has a similar deal.
251  Economy / Lending / Re: Need a loan of 0.1 BTC. on: June 21, 2019, 03:34:42 AM
Assuming you are 100% honest, I'd highly advise against Bitcoin loans. I've seen people who had every intention on paying back their loans default and essentially become scammers because the Bitcoin exchange rate was so volatile (as it is now) that they had no way to pay back their loan. If your business is based and operates in fiat, try again to get a fiat loan. A $900 loan from a bank doesn't become a $1800 loan in a week.

Amazing, we both think each other are idiots. Glad we had this heart to heart.
253  Economy / Collectibles / Re: Wearable Keys on: June 20, 2019, 12:25:25 AM
Well, I've got a good understanding of how engraving keys that the end user gives to me securely, but I still can't figure out if there is a way to BIP38 encrypt Minikeys. It seems to me like the format isn't recognized as a private key and can't be encrypted. I'm not sure if thats a defined limitation or just a personal problem.

I ran into one other issue with upper/lowercase letters. I had planned on just using a smaller font size for lowercase letters, but that is confusing for things like R vs r . My engraver is a jig with a carbide engraver bit that follows hand made movements. I use a template to keep the font and size consistent, but I do not have a lowercase letter template and I'm having a bad time finding one. I'll probably just mill one myself, but thats a pain. Anyway, I'll keep you updated!
254  Economy / Collectibles / Re: Wearable Keys on: June 18, 2019, 11:15:30 PM
If your going to place private keys..then BIP38 encrypt.

Yeah, I'm absolutely on board. I want the keys to be accessible to the owner, but not too accessible since its difficult to actually obscure the keys. I have an idea that would involve filling the engraved keys with a same colored, lower melting point alloy of the ring material, that would require you melt the filler material out to expose the keys, but there are quite a few things wrong with that plan.

I don't know how inconvenient it would be to import an encrypted compressed key format. I shall find out!
255  Economy / Collectibles / Re: Wearable Keys on: June 18, 2019, 06:58:06 PM
Could be RFID to get the key and the password is inside the ring.

I'm not entirely sure how I would place an RFID chip inside. I'll look into it, and if I figure that out I'll try it out, but that would likely remove the flame resistance.

Really really love this idea. I AM going to buy one when fully developed.
Will you be doing gold and  silver ?
Haven’t really got any suggestions to help on the security side, but my only advice is to keep it as simple as possible !
Love it 😊

Yup, I make the rings from an alloy of Argentium silver that I've created. I can also work with any karat of  yellow gold, though I've not yet mastered white gold, but that shouldn't be a problem in the short run. I haven't made anything out of platinum yet, but it shouldn't pose any problem. I just need to source platinum in that case.
256  Economy / Collectibles / Wearable Keys on: June 18, 2019, 06:22:45 PM
Hey guys, as a few of you may know, Wearable Keys has been on my todo list forever. I finally got around to doing some tests, and have finally got decent results so I figured I'd share. Of course you can expect better in the near future as I figure out a few technical details that I'm missing.

I really liked that Charlie Shrem had his private keys inscribed into the inside of his ring, but I had never got around to figuring out how to do it feasibly. Now that I've figured out how to do it for myself, assuming I get better at it, I'll probably end up making wearable keys for the public. Rings are simple enough, I've got an idea for a pendant that sort of resembles the 25 BTC Cassascius coin, as that was what I planned on doing with one if I ever got one.

Pros:
Metal inconspicuous paper wallet that you habitually carry, fire resistant, and convenient.

Current problems:
I've still got a bit of research to do on key formats. Preferably I don't want to engrave 64 characters. I know that minikey formats exist but I'm going to have to figure out what the best option is.

As far as security goes, there are a few issues. Charlie's ring was lacking one character from the inscription that he just remembered. I think inscribing encrypted keys is probably also a winning idea. I have a few ideas on how to obscure the keys once inscribed, but they are really stupid as of now. If I decide to prefund them and give different pieces different BTC values, that would probably have to go on the pendants as it'd be kind of stupid to get a ring that isn't your size that you can't conveniently carry around.

Anyway please let me know what you think. I welcome the harshest of criticism and the toughest questions, because they may lead me to figure out a few solutions to the current problems.

Don't worry pal, scout's honor I won't get involved. I don't dare to offer my opinion, I'm terrified that I'd be wrong and get thrashed again. You are the absolute authority and your judgement is impeccable, why bother asking the opinions of us plebeians?
258  Other / Meta / Re: WHICH flags are appropriate for each scenario listed here??????????????????????? on: June 18, 2019, 03:02:18 AM
You my friend are one handsome stud, I don't feel too bad being bested by someone with as much rich cryptocurrency experience as you. So, anyway have you decided to flag Lauda then?
259  Other / Meta / Re: WHICH flags are appropriate for each scenario listed here??????????????????????? on: June 18, 2019, 02:24:24 AM
You have already bested me friend, no need to consider your ruthless onslaught. I read over a good number of the threads, and as you say not a soul shares the same opinion as me. This is a clear and shut case that requires no further discussion, and the tens if not hundreds of threads and thousands of replies are just people all confirming how great it is to be in agreement with one another. You are correct, there is absolutely no one who disagrees causing this to be ambiguous in any way. You are the lord and master of cryptocurrencies as well as the authority on definitions of words created within the last 5 years and defined by a community that doesn't disagree with your assessment in the slightest.

My argument has nary a sympathizer to the fact that hindsight is 20/20 and that attempting to fix a later perceived problem could ever backfire. Your judgement is exactly what every person would do in any situation you see fit.

You are the absolute Authority.
260  Other / Meta / Re: WHICH flags are appropriate for each scenario listed here??????????????????????? on: June 18, 2019, 01:59:46 AM
*removes hat and places over heart*

You are absolutely correct, I concede good sir, I admit that you, a random stranger has bested me at a war of rambling words. There is nothing wrong with your logic and you need not even consider anyone else's opinion because you have a dictionary without common sense which guides you through the uncertainty of human interaction. I have been utterly trounced by your mastery of bias, capital letters, and the inability to recognize the fallibility of man.

Congratulations, you have taught me that no one is worthy of mistakes, nor can an opinion regarding a situation differ. Man is an evil creature and all things they do are an elaborate ruse to trick the unsuspecting. It is not possible that someone made a mistake regarding a new technology that they were implementing, and as a result they aimed to fix that mistake, further damning them with evidence to commit conspiracy.

Why did you even bother asking for people's opinions if you are the defining truth oh wise one?
