Nice work. Thank you for your continued efforts.

Hi everyone,
I've got few sample chips from bitfury and made microscope photos of these.

PS. Still want to get BFL sample chip. Could anyone in direct contact with them help me with this?

2402  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [UPDATE]Batch 2 AVALON STOCK OVERCLOCK to 84 Gh/s @350MHZ[STABLE] on: June 25, 2013, 04:31:17 AM
What does "connect to it through the net"?  There is a place to upload it via the firmware update menu.   Are you saying there is a way to grab it off the internet?

You first download the firmware onto your local system and then tell the browser to upload to the Avalon

For example you download the image from

http://ck.kolivas.org/apps/cgminer/avalon/20130624/openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-wr703n-v1-squashfs-factory.bin

and then you browse to

System -> Backup / Flash Firmware

Click on Browse, select the image you just downloaded from you Downloads an click on Flash Image

Then Ack the hash (if you want to check) and reflash the machine. Wait 3 minutes and log back in, running the new image.

By the way, are *you* the guy selling the ASIC managed hosting?

I'm offering to do managed hosting of 1 unit Avalon with 3 hashing units for EUR 100 / month in Belgium eh... never mind... why do I even bother to bring this up...

At least I've been reflashing embedded devices for the last 19 years.... it's really not that difficult if even I can pull it off...

I will test this and post the results after 24hrs.

I do not understand how only sent 3 of 21. I may be wrong, but doesn't have enough chips to send the entire order. Or their chain assembly are not efficient.

Production is still ramping up on all fronts including chip packaging, board assembly and final assembly / testing.

less than 300 Jalapenos(600chips), less than 10 singles(100chips) and 3 minirigs (300chips)
Total 1000 chips

It is likely that the first order was only 1000chips. Now made another batch, this request will take between 8 and 12 weeks

What makes you think that gigavps is the only one who had received the new Mini Rig devices?

BFL said they shipped one. Gigavps ordered 7.5TH/s of mini-rigs and got 1.5TH/s so far. Nobody else that I know of has said their mini-rig has arrived.
If you know of a second mini-rig delivery, please link to it.

https://forums.butterflylabs.com/blogs/bfl_jody/200-wednesday-june-19-2013-shipping-update.html

June 19th BFL_Jody's Post "Yesterday's MiniRig count I confirmed was three 500 gh/s units. So actually one whole MiniRig was shipped, but not all to the same person."

Apparently I am not aloud to pull more than 5kwh

Could it be that the service is inadequate to meet your present needs? Or is it some kind of condo association rule?
2406  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: June 23, 2013, 02:48:54 AM
I would never risk running the avalon higher then 325 on any of the stock PSU's not even the 2nd Batch Avalons.
Assuming ~85% efficiency for the PSU, and drawing 700W at the wall, that's only 595W draw, and the 2nd batch avalons have 750W PSUs. Yes I know not all PSUs are created equal, but that's running them at about 80% power draw.

ckolivas what you say is correct and at 208-240 this becomes a non issue.

However under such power loads I find it prudent to improve power quality (e.g. power factor correction, noise suppression, transient impulse protection, etc.) This can play a huge role on the performance of the overall system.

Such a solution can be expensive for an average user.

Therefor as a precautionary measure I use the following to supplement the avalons performance.

For each Avalon I dedicate a

Cyberpower CP1500O 1500VA UPS Battery Backup Pure Sine Wav,
The Web Power Switch VII and,
PSU Corsair AX860i,

Connected in that order.

This helps to narrow down potential issues when it comes to pushing these devices into out of spec operation.

Edit: I will also note that the hardware I listed above is good for 2 Avalon's running at 300 with no problems. However as I wish to push the Avalon into the unknown territory I am limiting that hardware to 1 Avalon.
2407  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: June 23, 2013, 02:26:45 AM
so they should run 350 ok with stock PSU?
Thats what I do  Cool

lasted around 45mins on 350 then machine got SICK..... the pic says ALIVE but before i refreshed it did say SICK

I would never risk running the avalon higher then 325 on any of the stock PSU's not even the 2nd Batch Avalons.
2408  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: June 23, 2013, 12:01:41 AM
The power consumption depends a lot on ambient temperature. My stock PSU consumes 850W at night and 950W during the day.
Upgraded to the Seasonic X-650 Gold 750W, and day power consumption reduced to 870W. All at 350MHz.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151087

850 W sounds like a lot for 3 hashing modules @ 350 MHz. This is at 120 V?

I am at 230 V and my default Batch #2 units with the 850 W power supply (enermax) pulls 765 W and the units I converted to a SilverStone Technology Strider Gold ST1200-G run at 735 W (92% power factor)

To be honest I am thinking of upgrading from corsair AX860i to AX1200i so I can test oc settings in the 375+

The AX860i is rather impressive and puts out little heat.
2409  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: June 22, 2013, 11:56:25 PM
Batch 1 users did you put new thermal paste? or are you running stock? I might want to add new thermal paste and maybe set the fan speed lower if I can get Temps under 45...

no new thermal paste here. Just upgraded power supply
2410  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: June 22, 2013, 07:21:12 PM
power consumption of my Avalon 2 at 350MHz is 890Watts  Tongue. Room is at 76F right now.

I get the same power draw (890watts) at 325 MHz and about a third of the shares are rejected.  I'm guessing that the power supply is a 650watt unit and can't handle the load.  I'm back to running at 300MHz until I get a new power supply.

Here is a before and after upgrade to a Corsair AX860i from the original Batch 1 Avalon power supply.

I think the best solution will be the multiple options like the ones added by strombom in his build.
I`m running the 2 working modules from my aval at 355 with lower hw error rate then the build 519 at 43:300
Also the option to make the fun run in manual mode full speed or automatic mode is needed.
The unit with 15C air in stays at about 27C  at full speed (it worked at about 39C with all the previous builds, with )
Also the option to add lower modules then 2
I don`t know why but build 622 did not work (the hash rate was always 0  )

Sounds like the config settings did not take.

You may need to hard boot your unit after the update.

can i get a link to modified firmware which allows 325 + 350 in seetings

thanks in advance

However the fans will run at 100%

Since the information about overclocking the Avalons seems to be out already and it's only a question about time when someone distributes a modified bit-file, I will post mine:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/16881231/avalon_clone/firmware/openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-wr703n-v1-squashfs-factory_20130519b.bin

I have been running it for a month on a batch 1 unit. Happy mining Smiley

Edit: I should add that the fan PWM is locked to 100% in this firmware.

Note:

Just wanted to share this fact. People have invested intrest to get the maximum return on their investment and are not required to share the results with the public as was the case with strombom.

The fact that the cgminer team shared their results with the peeps the moment they were confident with the code is just another reason we should continue to support open source.

Here is an update to Avalon unit #114 from Batch 1 running the new firmware.

Power Input 120v Ambient Room Temperature 20 °C/68.0 °F on a dedicated 15a Circuit

Hi

May i know which firmware is this? From strombom or the latest 0622 firmware? I am unable to see option for changing the overclock to anything above 300mhz in the official 0622 testing firmware

Thanks

As you can see from my photos above I am running 0622 firmware. For the purpose of these tests I have opted not to use direct USB from a laptop.

You will have to modify the /etc/init.d/cgminer file

I will give you the step by step instructions on how to modify existing entries in cgminer config file.

An easy way to do this is to ssh into your avalon after you upgrade the firmware to 0622.

Once you are logged in and at the prompt type cd /etc/init.d/

Next type vim cgminer

This will open up the vi editor. Use the arrow keys to navigate to the row you wish to change.

Now press i to get into edit mode.

once you are done in edit mode press esc it will get you back to command.

Finaly press : then w to write and q to quit

:wq

Here is a screen shot...

As you can see I opted to change the lower speed settings.

Here is an update to Avalon unit #114 from Batch 1 running the new firmware.

The screen shots were taken at 1 hour and at 3 hours.

I will verify the power draw increase once I move the unit to a dedicated circuit before posting final power consumption increases.

Screen shot taken at 1 hour.

With my deep respect to Con and Kano i can state following:

I calculate my ACTUAL hash rate as advised by Kano taking in account Diff1 shares accepted from pool(s) and cgminer up-time. This gives me EXACT (Real) hashrate. Knowing the fact my network was fine and i did not have downtime due to Network issues, pool issues or FPGA controller hangs (I am monitoring it every two minutes + automated power off/on no reboots) i am 100% sure that 3.2 is not performing.

PS: just for the reference (do math yourself)

Computer: cgminer 3.1.1
Elapsed: 7h 11m 30s
Difficulty Accepted:431530.00000000
MHS:71587.77

That was not happening with 3.2

Found the regression and I've rewritten the code to avoid this performance loss. It is committed to the master git tree now and will be in the next release. Hopefully xiangfu will be able to make an official testing firmware with it before then too.

Does this new firmware 6/22 include this new code in order to deal with the regression?
2417  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: How can I clock Avalon to 325 MHz and beyond? on: June 21, 2013, 01:46:04 PM
how easy is it to upgrade the avalons with a 4th module? does this create extra heat? doe it require a better PSU needed?
Batch 1 Avalon modules are so close together that the communication cables are pinched.

Bitaxe.ca rep suggested that I file down the heat sink were the cable gets pinched.

Batch 1 has room for a 4th module.

Batch 2 Avalon's had a airflow modification in the spot that would have the 4th module. However this enabled them to have the modules spaced apart a little more and the data cable is further towards the center of the module.

2419  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC users thread on: June 21, 2013, 12:15:47 PM
After a few more minutes it's up to

Code:
(5s):83.39G (avg):82.64Gh/s | A:350  R:0  HW:357  U:21.4/m  WU:1173.2/m

Power usage only went up by 5W going to 325 and 10W going to 350. 375 was unstable. The code is already in git master along with the values in ASIC README

34:375
36:350
39:325

Since mine is a batch 2, it has a 750W PSU and it does not seem to be a power issue at 350, but HW errors go nuts above this.

Wow, that's damn impressive. I smell a hashrate spike!  Smiley

Nice work and thank you for sharing your results.

I upgraded to the 860i and I find that as long as the ambient temps are in the 20 range then the hardware should be able to cope with the increased speed.
2420  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon's New Factory! ;D on: June 20, 2013, 02:52:16 AM
So I want to update this thread, there will be a batch#4 Avalon.   SMT machines and I already see batch#4 on at least one of the Avalon websites.  I am not going to release my evidence yet but it really looks like batch 4 will be a reality.   For those interested in a batch#4 group buy, please PM me.  I can also do hosting.

no such thing.

Care to bet  me BTC or 3  more Avalons on top of the ones I am due?  I have supporting evidence there will be a batch #4 avalon from domains you guys own / use.

It may not be one of my domains you know, we do not have avalon batch #4 on any of the sites, I would know, since I didn't put them there, but I'm just warning others not to get into your group by for something that doesn't exist.

Thanks for the heads up..

P.S. Looking forward to Avalon Gen 2.
