heh, aside from investing in the worst parts of detroit, there are actual legit investment opportunities in other parts of Michigan right now.
Michigan's great. I bought a relatively new 3bed, 2bath, 2-car garage house in decent condition with full basement, central air, front and back deck, a big horse barn with gated pasture, and even an area for chickens with coop, and 15 acres in MI for ~$60k just a year ago.

Michigan's attractive because property prices are bringing new meaning to "dirt-cheap" like nowhere else in the Midwest, and overall, the state's really not in bad shape at all - just Detroit. It's not like Ohio.  Grin

Well, the reality is that drugs will soon be legalized anyways
Huh

Legalized where? US states which've "legalized" weed still have it multitudes more heavily regulated than alcohol (allowing more federal raids than ever), while new drugs are constantly being criminalized, and the DEA and related LEOs are still targeting parties involved with existing drugs as harshly as ever.

2506  Other / Off-topic / Re: Name some good stratergy games on: August 07, 2013, 06:41:35 AM
Some upcoming strategy games (all with MP) I'm excited about:
Europa Universalis 4 (Aug 13)
I don't think Paradox has ever released a sequel which deviates from the spirit of the game and isn't objectively an improvement over the predecessor (the GUI is quite foreign-looking and interesting in screenshots), so if you like EU3 (or Vic2, or CK2)... hype @ http://www.europauniversalis4.com/
Rome: Total War 2 (Sep 3)
I'm skeptical of CA and everything they say. AI's always garbage, and I'm not playing some 10-hour game with online goons. But... there's always so much potential - and if you're into spectacle, the released screenshots are shockingly beautiful. hype @ http://www.totalwar.com/en_US/rome2/
Rise of Venice (Sep 27)
Rise of Venice was announced a couple months ago. There's not a ton of info on it, but I'm assuming it will be similar to other sea trading games around Ren times (though hopefully an improvement!). hype @ http://forum.kalypsomedia.com/showthread.php?tid=18821

Some others:
Saints Row 4 (unapologetically fun GTA clone) is also slated to be released on August 20th. hype @ http://www.saintsrow.com/news/detail/article/263381/dev_diary_1

Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs (true survival horror) is set to be released.... sometime this year (lots of delays). In the meantime, if you haven't played Amnesia: The Dark Descent, or any Frictional games, but like horror... play them. Dead Space is a kiddie rollercoaster in comparison. hype @ http://aamfp.com/

There's a re-release ("re-invention") of C&C being set to be released this year, but EA is publishing, so no links.

End of Nations may be released... sometime. It's kind of a tactical f2p online RTS. I played a looong time ago in closed alpha ('11). It was pretty horrible (bad enough that I unsubscribed from email updates on top of stopping playing), but also very incomplete at the time. It's apparently still quite incomplete. hype @ http://www.endofnations.com/

ETA: Dominions 4 was also announced not too long ago. Color scheme on GUI looks absolutely horrible, and is basically just a set of improvements on Dominions 3, as 3 was an improvement on 2. Illwinter's incompetent at marketing, so Dominions 4 is the same price as Dom3. Roll Eyes (I'm still excited about it, though!) hype @ http://www.illwinter.com/dom4/

Here's another fun one... here's the address referenced in the alleged ransom letter: https://blockchain.info/address/1HeF89wMjC48bWNgWvVo7Wu3RaLW8XVsE8

There may be some message in the send transaction. If you check the address the send goes to, it's connected to a ton of similarly-bizarre transactions.
2509  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Anyone know what happened to knightmb and his 371,000 BTC? on: August 07, 2013, 05:37:05 AM
Oh - since I don't think this was ever posted... here's the alleged ransom letter (these were on pastebin and picked up by some news sources, so either PWC or MB posted them - or they're fake Wink):

Dear PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP
Using your Office @ 830 Crescent Centre Drive, Suite 260, Franklin, TN 37067  Telephone: [1] (615) 503-2860 we were able to gain access to your network file servers and copy over the tax documents for one Willard M Romney and Ann D Romney. We are sure that once you figure out where the security breach was, some people will probably get fired but that is not our concern.
All major news media outlets are going to be sent an encrypted copy of the most recent tax years that your company had on file since you did not have them all in a convenient electronic form. The years before 2010 will be of great interest to many. If the parties interested do not want the encrypted key released to the public to unlock these documents on September 28 of this year then payment will be necessary.
The deal is quite simple. Convert $1,000,000 USD to Bitcoins (Google if if you need a lesson on what Bitcoin is) using the various markets available out in the world for buying. Transfer the Bitcoins gathered to the Bitcoin address listed below. It does not matter if small amounts or one large amount is transferred, as long as the final value of the Bitcoins is equal to $1,000,000 USD at the time when it is finished. The keys to unlock the data will be purged and what ever is inside the documents will remain a secret forever.
Failure to do this before September 28, the entire world will be allowed to view the documents with a publicly released key to unlock everything.
Bitcoin Address to Stop Release:
1HeF89wMjC48bWNgWvVo7Wu3RaLW8XVsE8
And the same time, the other interested parties will be allowed to compete with you. For those that DO want the documents released will have an different address to send to. If $1,000,000 USD is sent to this account below first; then the encryption keys will be made available to the world right away. So this is an equal opportunity for the documents to remain locked away forever or to be exposed before the September 28 deadline.
Who-ever is the winner does not matter to us.
Bitcoin Address to Promote Full Release:

Cheers!
Reference to avoid Fakes that only you will have.

2.[t]he moment I understood the will of my Heavenly Father

Here's another:
PWC Office @ 830 Crescent Centre Drive, Suite 260, Franklin, TN 37067
Telephone: [1] (615) 503-2860

Romney's 1040 tax returns were taken from the PWC office 8/25/2012 by gaining access to the third floor via a gentleman working on the 3rd floor of the building. Once on the 3rd floor, the team moved down the stairs to the 2nd floor and setup shop in an empty office room. During the night, suite 260 was entered, and all available 1040 tax forms for Romney were copied. A package was sent to the PWC on suite 260 with a flash drive containing a copy of the 1040 files, plus copies were sent to the Democratic office in the county and copies were sent to the GOP office in the county at the beginning of the week also containing flash drives with copies of Romney's tax returns before 2010. A scanned signature image for Mitt Romney from the 1040 forms were scanned and included with the packages, taken from earlier 1040 tax forms gathered and stored on the flash drives.

The group will release all available files to the public on the 28 of September, 2012

This line is on all the package letters for authenticity of the email being sent.

2510  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Find Trendon Shavers in person thread... [BTCST, BTS&T, pirateat40] on: August 07, 2013, 05:30:45 AM
The flash drive in the envelope sent to PWC did not just contain copies of the documents the ransomer was threatening to release, but also included two pictures of cats around furniture. The cat pictures were heavily scrutinized by the US Secret Service and considered to be the smoking gun of the case, which Brown says “has kind of turned into a running joke now among friends and family.” The Secret Service then decided, likely with evidence not yet presented to the public, to conduct a raid against Michael Brown and his family's home (again).

So Brown was the guy to get Romney's tax documents? How did he get those documents? He is just some guy from Nashville.

My understanding was that he didn't have the docs (I could be wrong)
That's my understanding, too. There's a thread for Brown @ https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=6825 though, so we don't keep hijacking.  Wink
2511  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Crowdfund Homes in Detroit? on: August 07, 2013, 05:24:04 AM
I think I can buy that house for $ 500. Tell me how do I do this? Smiley
One of the greatest things Detroit did to bolster their home prices was to privatize property tax information distribution, and sell the rights to a company which ended up putting tax lookups behind a pay wall (yes, I'm serious, and the FAQ looks super-legit -- http://www.bsasoftware.com/support/programs/is/detfaq.html ). That particular property may owe thousands or tens of thousands in back taxes, on top of >$1.2k in annual property taxes. Detroit has also been refusing acceptance of back-taxes for some properties, lately.

Seriously - stay away.
2512  Other / Off-topic / Re: BREAKING: HALF OF TOR SITES COMPROMISED, INCLUDING TORMAIL on: August 07, 2013, 05:04:06 AM
There're so many implications from this - too many to cover all in-depth.

Near-term, it'll be interesting to see if even Ireland considers standing up to a USG extradition demand request after the rather powerful blow against the USG by the Russian gov't. Two high-profile extradition requests denied in a row would be the biggest win for national sovereignty in my memory, and an incredible blow to USG prestige internationally (it may also be interpreted as an act of defiance by the Irish government against the UK). Interestingly, Marques actually looked into fleeing to Russia (allegedly out of curiosity about Snowden). Putin's challenge (perhaps to be joined!) to the idea of a USG hegemony is one of the most exciting conflicts of our time, I think.

Weakening governments' power (especially when governments act as if the entire world's in their jurisdiction) is probably as essential to Internet privacy as strengthening the tools used to accomplish it.
2513  Economy / Lending / Re: looking to sell joeyjmr8484 btcjam debt on: August 07, 2013, 04:22:22 AM
You're basically selling a lottery ticket with maybe "1/1000 odds" to someone feeling really lucky. It's not enough money to justify any kind of collections (formal or informal), especially since people've been heckling him (at no hard gain, so far) with his physical address, so it's truly nothing more than a gamble.

If you're lucky, a BTC.0003775 price may get some bites, and I really don't say that to be an ass, but as someone who's bought and sold bad debt here. Your only chance of getting what you're asking is if the defaulter buys the debt back at that price for the discount, but he's obviously uninterested in paying anything.
Wow, .0003775? No way. I would consider .17. But thought .22 was very good deal as it is.
Guy ("lendee") walks down the street and asks for a $50 loan. Someone ("lender") gives it to him. After the hand-off, the lendee says he won't pay back the debt.

If you were an uninterested third-party, would you really consider paying $35 for the claim on that debt?

Lendee later defaults on the loan, and reaffirms his refusal to pay back, even after a group of people send a barrage of unpaid-for pizzas to his house. Would you consider paying anything for the loan?

It's now a week after that incident, and no progress has been made in collections by the lenders. How does ~58% of FV make any sense there?
2514  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: MTGox phone number? on: August 07, 2013, 04:09:43 AM
That number from what I see wont work.

and this has been my 2 months conversation with them

Idunno if you were around to remember it, but Nefario from GLBSE only answered maybe 1/10 of the times you called him during its collapse.  Total crapshoot. The same may be true of Gox if the line's not disconnected. Keep in mind, they're on nearly-opposite time-zones from the US, and don't have any CSRs around when it's not JP business hours.

(not suggesting Gox is collapsing, fwiw - but they're definitely swamped with customer complaints and questions)
[ETA: Gox support does occasionally post on the forum, but the thread has to be extremely negative, usually over-the-top where they feel they can actually do damage control. It's a terrible precedent to set, and maybe you should consider taking advantage of it for an official reply. Wink]

2517  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Crowdfund Homes in Detroit? on: August 07, 2013, 03:49:04 AM
There is a way to make money out of extraordinarily cheap housing but actually it does require quite a bit of investment (have seen it done in Australia before).

Basically you buy *every* property in a small street then end the leases for all existing tenants (in a legal and reasonable way) and after they have left rebuild all the houses (and later be very fussy about the new tenants that you let move in).

If you can do that well (and the street is not surrounded by other bad streets) then there is a good chance you can create a nicer new street for people to live in that will actually attract people to it (and then eventually reap the rewards as the property values increase).

It isn't without risk and it isn't so cheap but it has a much better chance than buying a single property in an area that already has severe problems with crime and bad tenants.

But if the taxes are too high then even this approach might not work (so sometimes what look like "bargains" are actually very far from it).

A similar idea has already been carried out in Wayne County. It's called Canton. Tongue

Pandora

Didn't even know Pandora has a subscription ?
Yeah. "Pandora One." Higher bitrate, no ads (though they're blocked well with AB), and much longer time-outs if you're not clicking anything on the Pandora page. Also allows download of a standalone app which is compact, but otherwise not particularly appealing. They have a business-friendly model through a partner, too, which is licensed for use in commercial settings.
