261  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] REBATE official thread on: June 30, 2012, 01:02:53 PM
I look forward to what JRO has to say. From my understanding his "arb bot" has the ability to do something that no other person in BTC can do. Assuming this is true, I just find it shocking that the end use for it turned out to be a gambling site.
I don't think they even need some arb system to back this.

I give you an example:
1BTC for sale.
Now the bids come in: 0.1BTC 0.15BTC 0.2BTC 0.25BTC 0.3BTC 0.35BTC and finally 0.4BTC. Sold for 0.4BTC.
So they got 0.1+0.15+0.2+0.25+0.3+0.35+0.4=1.65BTC and gave 1BTC away for this. Instant 0.65BTC profit.

The only risk is that there are too little players. So to lower the overall risk, one could just connect some arb bot to this.

How is Matthew involved in this project? Thanks.
He is?

So to put this in another way, equipment which will eventually deliver 10-20TH have been bought. This is more than the current total hash rate.
My math: 50kBTC ~ $300k ~ 10 x 1TH rigs (no trade-in) or 20 x 1TH (all trade-ins).
264  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [btc]1 or 1[btc]? on: June 24, 2012, 10:57:02 PM
Well, most conventional currencies use the symbol as the prefix. I like it that way. I wish the BTC was smaller by default, like this: BTC

I agree that it is a bit(pun!) too big, but hell, the fact that Theymos made it it enough for me, im not complaining.

Look at this:

ABBTCCDEFG  vs.  ABBTCCDEFG

The BTC symbol is not too big, it is just bold. I don't know why someone thought that a bold symbol will be better than a normal one.

When will this community stop trashing that which it doesn't understand?
Yes, please, don't behave like some MNW when confronted with a bitcoincard  Tongue

268  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Bitcoins For Sale at a Discounted Price on: June 20, 2012, 04:25:13 PM
All those exchanges are not connected to BitInstant and basically dwolla only (meaning US customers only).
So to put it another way, by artificially limiting the customer base, sellers get only a lower price for their bitcoins.

Well, BitFloor doesn't use Dwolla at all. Instead BitFloor accepts cash deposits at Chase bank branches in the US and accepts USD via international wire, among other deposit methods. No one is forcing the sellers to enter orders at lower prices. I see it more as buyers at Mt Gox being too lazy to consider using another exchange.
Yep, exactly, all those are very US centric, which is at little ironic in case of Intersago, as this exchange is located in Europe, still you cant use their USD exchange from Europe.
And international wire vs mtgox: do I pay the mtgox "fee" (more expensive coins) or to I pay the huge banking fee? Because eventually I will have spend the same amount of money.

Just wanted to let you know that the new map feature uses almost random places for some entries.
Czech guy saying he is in Prague, shows up in Bangkok. Slovenian guy is in Portugal and so on.

Stop wiping your nose... euuuuwwwww

Anyways..

Is it next week yet.. I wanna see this thing...

Well he himself has "leaked" this link http://postimage.org/image/xhd9oc62p/full/

So apparently their photoshop department needs more than one week to fake an actual picture of this.
Either that or they are still waiting for Kodak to process their negatives and then UPS shipping it to the internet, because technology like digital cameras to take an actual image of the damn thing will not be invented for the next 20 year (to paraphrase mnw himself)....

Can you coordinate with BitInstant?
+1
This would bring way more volume to bitfloor

We will not be integrating with Bitinstant at this time. We feel that it is easier for our customers to deal directly with us instead of having to create accounts at various third party sites. This allows us to keep the fees down and the user experience around our exchange clearer and simpler.

Hm, so will you start accepting mtgox codes, btc-e codes or bitstamp codes anytime soon, so that one can transfer funds in and out?
I would really like to use your exchange, but it seems that it is a US customers only club.
Regarding fees, look at bitstamp. You can use mtgox codes there, but they have a 2% fee. Doing the same using bitinstant the fee is only 0.89%. So it seems one can use bitinstant to actually get lower fees.
And BTW, for using bitinstant no account is necessary - just fill out the form - click send - done.

275  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Version 0.6.2 available on: June 17, 2012, 12:03:57 AM
In the freebsd port tree (/usr/ports/net-p2p/bitcoin) there is still the v0.4.0 version.
Does any of you guys have the skills or know who we can ask to bring this port up to 0.6.2?

Maybe, but these days people do this just for fun, so why not?  Wink

Maybe it is just me being that bad at back jack, but how do we know that you don't steer the game? I mean is it common that the bank has a blackjack every 7 or so games when using play money? Albeit, after thinking about it, you would steer it in the other direction while still the player is still at play money.
Apart from this, great site, slick design, like it!

6 character passwords have a huge benefit: when a user forgets his password it can be computed from the hash within a few seconds.
<sarcasm off>
Frankly I stopped reading this thread at this point - it seems that these days even hobby sites are more secure than some financial sites.
279  Economy / Services / Re: [ANN] Booster.io -- Kickstarter meets Flattr meets Bitcoin on: June 13, 2012, 09:33:28 PM
Better way:

Pre-generate a bunch of addresses/private key pairs (vanitygen or offsite bitcoind).
Store the addresses (not the private keys) in the db on the website.
Now for every new bounty allocate one of those addresses (when spare amount is low refill from offsite).
Everyone can now send coins to this address, can use blockchain.info to check the balance and what not.
However no single coin is on the website itself.
To send the coins to the developer either send him the private key or just use your offsite bitcoind.
That way there are never ever any coins on the actual website, so no hacker can steal anything.

So is this real or not?
In 4-6 weeks, same as the magazine. Grin

Seriously, I have a theory: I'll bet MNW was pissed at the slow development cycle (perhaps even so with the magazine), and decided to publicly announce it in order to kick everyone into high gear. Protip: Doing that makes mistakes more likely, and won't help quality control and "making a perfect product". As you should have learned already.

I think the recent bitcoincard meeting in Vienna was the main reason to rush his announcement. And look at all his negative/FUD comments about the bitcoincard - if he just wanted to push his paypal device, there would be no need to behave that way.

I think that latter is a good theory.  Lets hope the competition spurs each group to improve their devices rather than causing them to resort to unprofessional attacks.

If MNW were smart, he would change his device that in addition to existing features it would also be gateway for the bitcoincard. Both would benefit from such a move.
