261  Other / Off-topic / OK, i confirmed the model of FPGA they are using in BFL single. on: May 06, 2012, 12:23:27 PM
first, an Anonymous send me a broken BFL single for free. thank you!

i disassemble the box and start a JTAG probing on JTAG2.
the board act the same as  this post:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=66244.msg870733#msg870733

but by the component size (29X29mm, 780pin), Flash memory size (64Mbit), i nearly to be certain it's a altera atratix3 FPGA. 99% possibility is a EP3SL150F780.
so i scraped the VIA under the chip, probe the JTAG pins, and finally find they bread the TDO line by remove the R36 resister.

by soldering the 0R resister back, I can detect the FPGAs by the JTAG normally.

so now is the result:

Code:
Device IDCODE :        00010010000100000010000011011101

it's  a EP3SL150.

you can check the ID cords here:

http://www.altera.com/literature/hb/stx3/stx3_siii51013.pdf

page 16.

ADD:

i also check the price of this chip.
on digikey, it's about 2000-3000USD,
http://www.digikey.cn/product-search/zh/integrated-circuits-ics/embedded-fpgas-field-programmable-gate-array/2556262?k=EP3SL150

but this old chip is about 200-300USD in China market for a new one, and about 50-60 USD for a used one. i discussed with my supplier about the strange price, they said because nearly no one use this stuff, so the price is like a " markdown sale", so there are no large quantity of this chip in the market, maybe only a few hundreds (both new and used one).

all above is only personal viewpoint, I shall not accept any responsibility.

hi, man.
i know i promised will post a thread today, but this afternoon, someone give me on BFL single.
now i'm working on the jtag probe work, i think i already find something interesting....  Grin

Judging by the interest in Lancelot on these forums, the first batch from the new design better have a large number of boards, they're gonna sell like hot cakes Tongue.

a small problem is first batch always have a number of bugs.  Cheesy

Solution: the first batch (call it batch zero) goes to Xiangfu and me since we are really close Tongue
(after debugging we send them back to you to refurbish)

OK , and l have to charge you 999$ pre board for the refurbish cost. you know, labor cost is rising in China at the moment.  Sad

This doesn't seem too far-fetched actually. I heard some rumors about it being a dual Spartan6-LX150 board, bitstream-compatible with Icarus, running 250-300MH/s per FPGA. Which would actually be great news for all current Icarus owners...

i hope this will come true, but difficulty and  uncertainties are still there...  Sad

sorry, impossible. Cheesy

Let'S look ahead.

Any update on the new product?

will post a new thread to public the updates this week.  Grin

batch 4 reduced power consuming to about <19W at full load with fan (boards input).  Shocked
i tried some hi-end MOSFETs.  Grin

details:

IDLE:  3.1W(with out fan) / 4.1W (with fan)
FULL LOAD: 17.2W(with out fan) / 18.2W (with fan)

all boards input.

I'm getting some odd behavior from one of my icarus boards.  The symptom seems to be that every time it finds a share, the miner sees it as two shares that are the same.  Of course the second one gets rejected as a duplicate.  Here is example from MPBM:

Code:

I tried this with cgminer also and it doesn't list any errors about duplicates (perhaps because it is quietly detecting the duplicates and ignoring them?).  However, that board has a Utility stat of only 2.5 instead of being close to 5.2.  So perhaps it is still happening and the extra round trips are reducing the effective hashrate.

Note, this does not happen on my other icarus board.  The other one is working normally.  In fact the board that is currently acting up was working fine for a day or two before this started happening.

I thought it might be a heat problem, so I stopped it for an hour to let it cool completely down, but the problem persisted right away after rebooting my host computer and starting mining.

Anyone seen anything like this before?

this behavior usually happen when set the FPGA ID to the same value. this  variable is set by S2-2 and S3-2 switches.
please  notice if they set to a same value, or cause by something like switch internal poorconnection.

a solution is change the S2-2 and S3-2 value to opposite.

Just for the record..  I had one of the plug packs that came with the icarus die on me.

No big deal, I've got other suitable power packs - but thought I should mention it as a data point in case others experience failures.

So did mine but for another reason... i had to cut off the cord Cheesy. For all those who do this: be careful with polarity. For most cables the one with white is (+) but not for the Icarus supply. Not that we hear about a bad board design again...

i think a wrong polarity will burn up the fuse, but will not cause any further damage to the board.

yeah, it's possible . so i recommend if you have a number of boards, you'd better use a mod ATX power to power them.
i test about 150~200 adapters, the failure rate is about 2% (4) during the burn-in test.

275  Bitcoin / Hardware / Official Icarus last batch "group purchase" thread. on: March 24, 2012, 07:00:20 AM
hi, everyone.

In my original plan, icarus project will discontinued after batch 3, because i must move to my next product "Lancelot".

maybe because it's really at least 8 weeks away. i saw many people still want Icarus board, and start a unofficial Group buying thread.

as everyone noticed, some event which make us not pleasant happened.

first of all, i make this product not only for make money for my self, but also by my interest. by doing this, now i have many friends around the world.

this time i underestimated everybody's enthusiasm on icarus, but my future plan must continue. so i find one of my friend "xiangfu" to operate this group purchase. i trusted him, and i will take the risk of any scam issues. i hope you can trust him too.

some notice:

1, this batch will no more than 50 boards.
2, 90% possibility will ship out in April.
3, will ship from China.
276  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Icarus bulk orders. Who's interested? on: March 24, 2012, 06:38:25 AM
Well this idea hit a brick wall Sad I  was really hoping to get a board for the reduced price. Ohwell.

no, just a "self-profit-making" idea hit a wall.

i contact with on of my friend Xiangfu today, he will glad to handle this group purchase for you. with a very low charge.

i will start a new thread.
277  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Icarus bulk orders. Who's interested? on: March 23, 2012, 05:33:01 PM
if there are somebody could run this "group purchase" with lower fee, i will accept his order.  Smiley
i want to give benefits directly to my customers by this last chance, not for somebody Manufacturing a scam or make profit to them self.  Angry
notice that from the beginning, i reserved the rights to choice my customers.

some additional info:

1, the order can not be large than 60, <50 are better. because i only have 90 PCBs, and already have 30 ordered by a local buyer.  Cheesy
2, if there are no body can offer a low charge service to this group purchase, i will find a man i trusted to handle this.  Cheesy
3, if i can't, i will not accept this group purchase, and keep the FPGAs to Lancelot project. this will not cause any loss to me.  Angry
278  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Icarus bulk orders. Who's interested? on: March 22, 2012, 11:29:21 AM
hummm....

hello everyone.

i come to give you some information here.

i already ordered 200 FPGAs, so i think it's very possible to finish any bulk orders in April.

for 30 boards, i can give you a free shipping to US or Canada.

so you have plenty time to make the decision.

regards.

Icarus Batch3 shipped out 220 boards.
plus previous 2 batches, there are about 260 total.  Grin

Which prolific PL2303 driver do I install? v1.5 or 1.52?
Could someone point me to an example using Icarus with cgminer?
Thanks

i use 1.5 now, but please feel free to try any other version, some of them may more stable on your machine.
