2621  Economy / Securities / Re: GLBSE:RUGATU - Market cap < 2BTC, Can it recover? on: June 15, 2012, 11:52:39 PM
It looks like Rugatu is having some serious troubles:

- Earlier this week in the thread below, majority of forum users agreed the valuation was too high.  Rugatu owners/employees disagreed.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=87390.0

- There have been allegations of unfair moderation and moderators manipulating rules to win a question's reward, then banning the user who they stole from for publicly discussing it
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=86551.msg965892#msg965892

- (Speculation): Moderators on Rugatu banned the user: gweedo's account after bitcointalk user gweedo criticized their valuation.  Ban was for "excessive downvoting", I feel like bad blood may have played a role.

- The sum of all bids on GLBSE is about 1.5BTC at time of writing.  This means selling EVERY SHARE wouldn't even net two bitcoins.  Ouch.

Now the Rugatu Mods have locked every thread they created, so I wanted a place to discuss their situation without censorship.

Can Rugatu recover from this?

Actually, Gweedo was ironically suspended after I pointed out that Gweedo was, in fact, excessively down-voting virtually everyone, particularly casting down-votes in questions that he answered.  Furthermore, he was down-voting answers that were 'strong' and had received up-votes from others.  I think he deserved a suspension.  You will see my complaint about it in the announcement thread and my proposed solution to the problem.

2624  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [ANN]Rugatu Q&A launched in beta - using real bitcoins now ! on: June 14, 2012, 11:10:42 AM
Ok, so, call me a little crazy, but I see a (potential) issue with your site.

Take, for instance, the user "Gweedo."  If you look at his karma history, he down-votes virtually everyone and does not up-vote anyone.  Furthermore, these down-votes seem to frequently occur in the questions that he answers, and ironically, the answers that he seems to down-vote are often 'strong' answers that have received up-votes from others.  Now, this may be a coincidence, but I think we all know what's going on here.

So, I have a suggestion:  Don't allow people to down-vote on questions that they answer.  Also, if someone does issue a down-vote to an answer of a particular question, make it so that that user cannot submit an answer to the same question.  Simple.

My dad always told me there was nothing wrong with drumming left handed, even though every single drummer I've ever seen has tried to convince me to drum cross armed. I'm only beginning to learn efficiency though since I learned how to drum from a game (Doogi Doogi).0

Nice!  Keep it up.  Combine it with your singing and you can be the next Phil Collins.

Edit:  I also tried copying/pasting flashplayer.xpt and NPSWF32.dll directly into my plugins folder under torbrowser/firefoxportable/data/plugins and that didn't work.

Damn, I was just about to suggest this! Do you also have NPSWF32_FlashUtil.exe in your C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash\ folder? If so, you'll need that to copy that into your plugins folder as well.

Actually, it wasn't there.  But, I downloaded it and copied/pasted it to both folders, and it still didn't work.  Then, I just tried copying/pasting EVERYTHING in the \Macromed\Flash folder to the plugins folder, and still no luck.

Oh well, I'm headed to bed for the night (morning?).  Thanks for the suggestions Smiley  I'll give it another go some other time, but I literally spent several hours trying everything I could think of that doesn't require me paying for a VPN.

Have you seen this thread? https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=78041.0

If flash is turned off by default, i suppose you would just have to figure out how to turn it back on?
Correct, Tor Browser Bundle, TorK, and probably every other Tor-ready browser package disables addons and plugins in all browsers they support for exactly this reason.

If you're using Firefox, go into Tools -> Addons (or enter about:addons in the address bar), then under Plugins, find Flash and click Enable. For most sites that use Flash you will also need to enable Javascript under Preferences -> Content. Problem solved. New problem created: your browser is no longer anonymous, since Flash and Javascript can create network connections which bypass Tor, revealing your IP address. You're not "psuedo-anonymous", you're as non-anonymous as if you were not using Tor at all.

I'm using Vidalia Tor Bundle.

Basically, I simply want to bypass websites in which a particular IP (mine) has been restricted.  Now, Tor does that no problem, but there are flash features on some of these sites that I want to use.  I'm not really concerned if someone figures out who I am.  It's not a legal issue.

Vidalia uses Firefox for anonymous web browsing. You should be able to enable Flash and Javascript using the above instructions. Just don't forget to disable them again when you really do need to be anonymous!

Actually, this is one of the first things I tried.  However, when I click "plugins" it says "you don't have any add-ons of this type installed."  And, when I try to search for "Shockwave" or "Flash,"  it doesn't appear.  I've already enabled Javascript and Flash and pretty much disabled anything that would block it under the preference tabs, but Flash doesn't appear in my plugins list.

Edit:  I also tried copying/pasting flashplayer.xpt and NPSWF32.dll directly into my plugins folder under torbrowser/firefoxportable/data/plugins and that didn't work.

That answer is not helpful.  I'm not concerned about total anonymity.  Just pseudo-anonymity.

2634  Other / Off-topic / Re: How to use flash with Tor? on: June 13, 2012, 06:20:45 AM
Flash does not always respect in-browser proxy settings, and after all it's closed technology. The way to do it is set up a virtual machine and route all it's traffic through tor.

I'm not anywhere close to a hacker.  In layman's terms, please?
2635  Other / Off-topic / How to use flash with Tor? (.5 BTC bounty upon success) [SOLVED] on: June 13, 2012, 06:02:19 AM
So, I can't seem to get flash to work on Tor.  The little message came up saying "additional plug-ins are required to view this content" or something like that, so I clicked the "install" button and downloaded flash through Tor.

Still, nothing.  Do I need to copy some flash stuff to a Tor folder or something?  Any help would be appreciated.

Edit:  Provide me a step-by-step tutorial, and talk to me like I'm 5.
2636  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: MT.Gox caught lying again on: June 13, 2012, 04:14:05 AM

Mt. Gox outright deleted one of my accounts when I still had money in it (hardly anything, but that's beside the point).  I was given absolutely no warning, no notice, and even though I have posted about it several times on this forum, they have never responded about it to this day.

I consider this outright stealing.  I have no direct evidence of this, but it's the only assumption I can make at this point.

Did you obtain express permission from them before opening more than one account?

Quote from: MtGox ToS
Members may only have one Account at any one time and may not create or use any Account other than their own. For a Member to be exempt from any of these rules, he/she must request express and prior permission from the Platform. The creation or use of Accounts without obtaining such prior express permission from the Platform will lead to the immediate suspension of all said Accounts, as well as all pending purchase/sale offers.

That's the thing.  I didn't have more than one account.  I only created a 2nd one (and have never even used it, simply created it) after I found out that my first account was gone and irretrievable.  How did I know it was gone?  Well, I had my account name and password saved in 3 different locations (both of which were over 20+ random characters, numbers, and symbols) and copying and pasting them from all 3 locations (to make sure I didn't make a mistake somewhere) didn't work.  Also, password retrieval didn't work even after multiple attempts.  It simply appears as if my email address and account were nowhere to be found in their database.  Also, my email password is also 20+ random characters, numbers, and symbols, and is backed by 2-factor authentication.

Um...data from the future?
2638  Economy / Speculation / Re: Rally!!!!! on: June 13, 2012, 02:04:49 AM
- bitinstant and massive availability of "cash for btc" trade
- bit-pay massive growth, reportedly 200-300% per month
- bitcoin magazine
- GPU -> FPGA change of guard
- investments being rounded up for bitcoin mining ASIC's by multiply independent parties (meaning by the end of 2013-2014 51% could be out of reach of most viable attackers today and that we will be measuring hashing power in petahashes and exahashes)
- upcoming FIRST EVER bitcoin subsidy cut
- massive and mostly positive news flow
- many significant projects in development, including zipconf, kronos, hermes, ellet hardware wallet, that bitcoin card, proper hosting services suitable for hosting bitcoin wallets etc...
- improvement on the decentralisation front. For example, say, mtgox (or and other exchange or biz) folds now, it is only problem for their customers, the rest of the world will just move on.  Deep bit is taking relatively small fraction of mining power as opposed to flirting with 51% level.

We are now at some very much solid footing as compared to about 1 year ago when we 2 digit valuations of BTC. I would think that market is grossly undervaluing Bitcoin and its potential.

If a (centralised) company with anything close to Bitcoin's "product" and growth history and potential to effectively replace most of modern banking system which has estimated valuation at almost 10% of worlds assets (excluding all the off-balance shit, lol). Such a company would be valued at billions already, not some puny 50MM which is a valuation reserved for smalltime 3 man teams starting some scam and trading it on pink sheets.

Do post if I have missed something of note.

I would think that fair Bitcoins valuation should be in middle 2 digit right now, not 5-6$.

Why do you think valuation should be in "middle 2 digit" right now?

Check out what I highlighted in bold from your post.  This is the only non-speculative indicator you listed that suggests that the value of Bitcoin should increase.

The value of Bitcoin should only increase when people buy them and use them.

Now, the value of Bitcoin may increase due to the other things you mentioned, and I would be inclined to agree that it will.  But, they are in no way definitive reasons that the value of Bitcoin should be in double digits.
2639  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: MT.Gox caught lying again on: June 13, 2012, 01:51:06 AM
Are you suggesting mtgox should pre-emptively hold massive sums in the Dwolla system for the convenience of speedy withdrawals?  Do you not see the risk in them holding funds with a 3rd party like that?  (especially one so wary of anything bitcoin-related as Dwolla is)
Also - when they do international transfers of large amounts, they can't just say 'oh.. this is all mtgox money'.  The whole point of AML stuff is that the underlying owner of the funds has to be declared.
Your idea that it's just a matter of mtgox having a Dwolla account and therefore being free to do any transfers instantly to other Dwolla users is childishly naive.

Do you think it takes a month to top up a dwolla account even if that was the case ?  Roll Eyes

I think that if you're withdrawing something like 10K to Dwolla - it's highly likely there could be delays in the international banking system, or in Dwolla itself.
I also think that if a bank or Dwolla decides to investigate a certain large transfer, they may even decide to stop processing other transfers in the queue from the same source account until it's resolved.

It's the assumption here that mtgox is the source of the delay, or even that they should somehow know the extent of a particular delay that I'm challenging.

You cannot assume that mtgox can just 'top up' an account and allocate it later.  It's quite likely that for an international funds transfer they have to explicitly list all the underlying IDs of the people to whom the funds will actually go.   These guys are pumping a lot of funds, and so are under a lot of scrutiny.

To a large extent, it doesn't even matter if Mt. Gox is the source of the delay.

Mt. Gox has clearly demonstrated time and time again utter incompetency with respect to customer service.  There have been literally dozens and dozens of complaints in the past few months alone.  Customers are left in the dark for weeks and weeks on end, or, in my case, indefinitely.
