Consciousness is infinite and distributes over reality.  When consciousness applies will (intention) to identify with some stratified condition, you have the cause of mind/body consciousness.

As long as this cause is still there, it will continue to manifest itself.

Removing the cause removes continual manifestation, but it does not remove consciousness.

Speaking of heat and cooling, my current cooling setup is....odd.

Apparently, my rig is cooler with my desktop-case closed rather than leaving the sides of the case open (thanks to the CoolerMaster fans I'm guessing).  Interestingly, an open case with a desk fan blowing directly on the cards is hotter.

Even more interestingly, taking a desk fan and blowing it through one of the CoolerMaster case fans (fan squared) is the coolest.

Go figure.

Not so odd at all. It's all about airflow and effective heat dissipation. If you leave out the sides, you ruin the airflow inside your case. Adding more fans, even a deskfan, won't help the heat to leave the case. Worst case you will just mix the hot air and a lot of it'll stay in the case. This, and the fact that open cases tend to accumulate much more dust and will build up additional heat made me go back to closed cases and air filters.

Word.  CoolerMaster rocks.
2923  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin Tax Information - Interesting on: April 16, 2012, 11:11:52 PM
So, about 2 months ago I went to H&R Block to get my taxes prepared.  I explained to the lady, who apparently was very experienced and had worked there for many years, about Bitcoin.  At the time, she told me that she was unsure of how to treat Bitcoin with regards to taxation -- is it a business?  Is it a hobby?  Is it an investment?

Well, 2 days ago I finally got my answer.  After asking the 5 longest-working members at that particular H&R Block location AND after calling the IRS, the lady said that Bitcoin is a hobby.  She knows that I buy precious metals with Bitcoin, knows that I have money in accounts all over the globe, and knows that I have conducted business deals and have provided services specifically dealing in Bitcoin.  I even showed her an old TradeHill check of some of my profits.

Long story short, I don't need to file any taxes this year  Grin  But then again, I was kinda hoping to write off some of my computer equipment as a business expense.
2924  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A letter to the community from Matthew N. Wright on: April 16, 2012, 10:59:44 PM
Matthew,

I'd like to think of myself as an excellent judge of character, what with my background in social work/psychology and my experience as a counselor and therapist.  I also meticulously scrutinize the language that people use when they communicate as it is a direct reflection of their state of mind -- after all, people think with language, and if they don't make sense out loud or in print, chances are that they are similarly confused in their heads.

That being said, you DO stand out from everybody.  You have something special, and what's even more refreshing is that you know you have something special.  In my honest opinion (I hope everybody reads this, although I doubt any but a few will care) you are easily one of the most intelligent and thoughtful people in the Bitcoin community, and everybody could learn a thing or two from you.

You WILL be successful.  Just be yourself, regardless of what persona you need to don to fulfill whatever responsibilities you currently have.  You are remorselessly you.  Few people truly realize that this and this alone is the key to success.

I sincerely wish you the best of luck...

...you can finish wiping your tears ass now.  Seriously, stop that.

Fixed for you!  Grin

Imagine if the first block after a difficulty change took 1 minute to solve -- then, you might 'expect' a -90% difficulty adjustment the next time.  But, if the 2nd block takes 59 minutes, then you'd be looking at a +600% difficulty adjustment.

max readjustment is 400% up and down.
however, we are currently seeing a drop in hashing power of about 20-30%. this isnt normal fluctuation. I'd be rather interested in what is the real cause for this.

Ah, thanks for reminding me about max adjustment.

One possibility though is summer heat.

I'm getting about 10-15% fewer m/hash come to think of it because I've had to downclock.

+1 Coinabul

Purchased a 1/10 oz. gold panda a few weeks ago and it arrived yesterday.  Gorgeous coin!  Processing delays took rather long but as I understand it, this was out of Coinabul's hands.  He kept me up to speed with my order during processing time and any time I had a question he responded quickly.

Would do business again!
2928  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Anyone using BTC to buy Silver/Gold on Coinabul? on: April 15, 2012, 11:41:46 PM
I ordered a 1/10 oz. Gold Panda from Coinabul several weeks ago.

The coin arrived yesterday and I couldn't be more satisfied Smiley  Like others, I was concerned at first about the processing delays.  But, Coinabul kept me up to speed with my order and any time I had a question, he responded quickly.

Very awesome, beautiful coins, good prices, will do business again.

Free-Will (Intention) is self-evident.  Determinism is reasoned ('X' caused 'Y').  They are complimentary to each other at the same time they're differentiated.

This is a good place to start when you run into philosophical dichotomies and/or paradoxes:

Any logical understanding of anything is fundamentally binary.  This is true because any particular condition is only identified in contrast to what it is not (e.g. An apple is an apple because it's not a not-apple).  Everything is understood through a series of yes-or-no operations.  That is, a logical understanding of something requires that it be understood in yes-or-no operations and not yes-and-no operations, until you shift your understanding to a higher level of syntax.  Only when you shift to a higher syntax do yes-and-no operations exist.

As an example of this shift in syntax, consider spatial dimensions.  Zero dimensions is represented by an infinitesimally small point with no height, width, or length.  The first dimension is linear, the 2nd-dimension is a planar, the 3rd adds depth, the 4th is time-based, etc.  Each successive dimension represents the sum of all possible combinations of conditions in lower dimensions.  So, for example, the time-based dimension contains all possible combinations of conditions in the 3rd dimension.  That is, it contains them simultaneously.

This simply means that paradoxes (i.e. two occurring events that are understood to be mutually exclusive at a lower level of syntax) exist at higher syntax levels.  Free-Will and Determinism are not exceptions.

Gotta love false dichotomies.

which one  Angry

Free will vs. Determinism.
2933  Other / Off-topic / Re: We're almost certainly living in a simulation on: April 15, 2012, 07:38:01 PM
There is no such morality in the modern scientific mathematical-mechanical world view either. You have no free will, you are determined by your genes and the imprinting from your environment. Guilt, responsibility would be merely artificial constructs.

Gotta love false dichotomies.
2934  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: difficulty went down on: April 15, 2012, 07:07:27 PM
Even if the total network hashrate remains fixed, difficulty adjustments of ~5% are to be expected simply due to randomness.

At the moment the next re-target is expecting -13.73%, doesn't look much like randomness.

That's likely because we're only ~19% through this difficulty period.

Imagine if the first block after a difficulty change took 1 minute to solve -- then, you might 'expect' a -90% difficulty adjustment the next time.  But, if the 2nd block takes 59 minutes, then you'd be looking at a +600% difficulty adjustment.

Yes, there is going to be some variance in mining power over a 2 week period.  But, there is also going to be variance in luck.  13.73% variance over a period of a 2-3 days can be expected.

I will have you know that I sold machined parts for my bitcoins, not some silly sacred shell beads.  Although I am somewhat impressed at the term used.

Regardless, I'd prefer not to end up like the people of Zimbabwe.

Interestingly, the Zimbabwe dollar (100 trillion dollar note in particular) has become MORE valuable since it got pegged to other currencies as a collectible than it was when it was in circulation.

2940  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Is rig building still profitable? on: April 12, 2012, 01:54:51 AM
if you ALREADY had horserpower you may try use it.
but build specially for mining ..

This argument comes up every so often when talking about the profitability of mining, and it has always somewhat bothered me.

If you take two persons:
Person A) Is thinking about buying a used computer for $1000, planning to use as a dedicated mining rig.
Person B) Already owns a same kind of computer with resale value of $1000 just sitting idle, and plans to start using it as a dedicated mining rig.

Now B has an option to sell his computer for $1000 or start mining. Person A has an option to not do anything, or buy a computer for $1000 and start mining. In both cases, if you decide to start mining, you will end up initially with $1000 less money compared to when you decide to not mine, so they are economically the same decisions. Of course in a lot of cases, situations are not this simple and there are some other factors to consider, but still if I presented these two exact scenarios separately, I predict that the same people would recommend person A to not waste his money, and for person B to start mining.

Person C) Already owns a same kind of computer, games with it, won't sell it, and realizes "holy crap, you mean I can make real money letting my already kick-ass video card do some work while I'm at work or sleeping?  And then I can use these magical coins to buy an even better video card or parts for even better gaming?  And then continue (nearly) ad infinitum?"    Smiley

I actually spent $3000 on a desktop computer that I use for mining.  While it only pulls 1.35 G/Hash, I'll be able to sell this thing in 3-4 years for around $1500 easily.  It's one badass mofo machine, and all the parts are covered under warranty for 4 years.

In other words, free kick ass machine!!!  I can mine BTC and LTC with it, watch a movie, and use professional recording software to record my music all at the same time   Cheesy
