3041  Other / Meta / Re: Lightning Network subforum proposal. on: June 21, 2021, 10:27:20 PM
Even if your LN megathread were to be split up into multiple topics, I don't think there would be sufficient demand to warrant a LN sub. 800 posts in about two years works out to a little more than one post per day.
Some boards receive far fewer. In the ivory tower board for example, the last post there was on the 2nd of June, almost 20 days ago, but it's still an existing board.
While it is important to have enough traffic to support a new sub board, other criteria like the importance of that topic to Bitcoin should factor in.

and maybe some other subforums that are not so active anymore should be removed.
How can this be done without losing dozens of pages of useful content? Should such boards be archived or locked from all users?
3042  Economy / Economics / Re: MicroStrategy Buys $250M in Bitcoin, Calling the Crypto ‘Superior to Cash’ on: June 21, 2021, 10:17:38 PM
Seriously.  It's really making me wonder what their end goal is with bitcoin, if they have one.  They can't buy so much bitcoin that they basically paint themselves into a corner they can't get out of, so there has to be a point where they're done buying--but I don't believe Saylor has made mention of his intentions.
I personally will not be surprised if they create a Bitcoin fund to manage the assets of other holders, Michael Saykor has already built quite a presence in the crypto space and can sufficiently make such a plunge.

And as I've said before, for MSTR's sake I hope bitcoin stays above their average purchase price, because it's a hell of a lot of money they've spent acquiring it, even now taking on debt in order to finance the buy.
It would also be a good test of their resilience to hold for many years, it's easy when the price is rising, but the pressure starts to mount during big dips, would be interesting to see what his reaction would be.
3043  Economy / Economics / Re: MicroStrategy Buys $250M in Bitcoin, Calling the Crypto ‘Superior to Cash’ on: June 21, 2021, 02:52:42 PM
For many, including me, this is an inspiring sign that they continue to believe in bitcoin and continue to accumulate it, and do not follow the path either Musk or Ruffer Investments, who abandoned bitcoin a few months later.
It is a good sign, that the company is more focused on accumulating more, but I do not think that should be used as a motivation for other Bitcoin holders, giving too much respect to any individual or company is not healthy as they could switch up anytime and with their influence affect the market, similar to how people looked up to Elon Musk before his switch to remove Bitcoin as a payment option.

They are a 60% BTC company, they now basically are common people BTC ETF. I have already stated this is nut, imho.
Basically, that's an outrageously high amount; pretty soon, Bitcoin price movements would affect their stock price more than any other factor.
3044  Economy / Economics / Re: MicroStrategy Buys $250M in Bitcoin, Calling the Crypto ‘Superior to Cash’ on: June 21, 2021, 12:17:12 PM
<snip>
Just saw the update on Twitter. I dare say this is one of their best buy in prices in a long time, although the purchasing price doesn't seem to matter to Michael Saylor, as long as they are purchasing more and building up their stash.

At this rate, microstrategy are tilting more towards a Bitcoin oriented company than any of the other services they offer.
3045  Economy / Speculation / Re: Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids! on: June 21, 2021, 10:06:57 AM
Do you think it would go as low as $12k then? I would have thought ~$19k (prior ATH) would be pretty good support?
Personally, I do not think we will see sub $20k prices again, the previous all time high should be a pretty solid support range and any drop below that would most likely signify an end of this bull cycle. Bitcoin has proven to be unpredictable so I would not rule out any possibilities, if it does drop below $12k, it's an opportunity to accumulate more.
3046  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: how I can reach my big place on: June 21, 2021, 07:53:45 AM
I have heard that it is possible to earn here.
Abandon that narrative or you'll not last long on the forum. This is primarily a discussion forum and as a new member you should focus on the do's and dont's, and the funding what discussions interests you; there is a trading discussion board as well as other related sub boards.

The last one told me that newcomers are not given merit. Is that right?
I started as a newbie and recently ranked up to legendary, so I'll say that is false.
3047  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [Discussion] How has the forum affected your journey in the crypto space? on: June 21, 2021, 07:37:27 AM
How has the forum affected your journey in the crypto space?

This forum did not affect my journey in the crypto space, but defined it. Prior to my discovery of this forum, I had no idea about Bitcoin, altcoin, blockchain and the rest, I was technically living in a delusional world of only flat.
Then I was introduced to this forum and cryptocurrencies with it and I've not stopped digging in and learning about it since then.

This forum has also affected my overall internet usage; I am now more privacy conscious. I do not over share online. I check the permission apps require, I read ToS of most platforms, etc. This has improved my overall online safety and made me aware of so many scam techniques used these days.
3048  Other / Meta / Re: NotATether merit source application (development and technical discussion board) on: June 20, 2021, 07:49:08 PM
Why is it structured like that?
I do not think the admins regulate how much merits a user sends for worthy posts nor do they intend to. Theymos has once written that users should freely give merits and if a user needs 50 to rank up and deserves it, by all means send them.
I however think applicants merit awarding history would be reviewed, they will not want to appoint someone who has a history of hoarding merits to be a source.
I assume that's one of the 'history' that will be checked from the boldened part below;
If you want to be a merit source:

 1. Be a somewhat established member.
 2. Collect TEN posts written in the last couple of months by other people that have not received nearly enough merit for how good they are, and post quotes for them all in a new Meta thread. The point of this is to demonstrate your ability to give out merit usefully.
3. We will take a look at your history and maybe make you a source.
3049  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Seed phrase security question on: June 20, 2021, 12:44:33 PM
Also, if bitcoin is a taxed commodity in your country, you may be asked to reveal the content of your wallet.
Then don't make it obvious that it is a wallet. Encrypt your seed phrase and store the encrypted string on one piece of paper and the decryption key on another. One without the other is not only useless, but reveals nothing about what is encrypted.
I guess this is the part I needed to clear up. I'm not very savvy in the legal distinctions, but would it technically be aginsts the law to store such information with a bank? Or is it a grey area that is not well defined and as such cannot be regulated.

From my research each bank would tell you what can and cannot be stored with them, how do they ensure customers do not violates their codes; this should be by checking the content would they be suspicious. They may not be able to reveal the contents, but would irbpose any legal implications, particularly for countries who are not receptive to Bitcoin.
3050  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Seed phrase security question on: June 19, 2021, 09:12:26 PM
That's why you practice redundancy. Back it up more than once on more than one separate pieces of paper, and store these pieces of paper in separate geographical locations. If you are concerned about one of your pieces of paper being discovered, then ensure that it does not contain all the information required to steal your coins: Use an additional passphrase, encrypt your seed phrase, split your seed phrase, etc. Make sure that any additional information required to recover your seed phrase is also backed up on separate pieces of paper and also stored in separate geographical locations.
Do you think someone can feasibly have so many secure locations to store several back ups and be able to regularly check up on them? It seems the safest and most reliable way to avoid loss due to unexpected hazards.
I've been looking into the possibility of storing back up phrases in a bank vault (inside safety boxes). You'll have a bit of privacy as the banks aren't allowed to know what you have inside, but they are regulated and can give up the contents on request by the government.
Also, if bitcoin is a taxed commodity in your country, you may be asked to reveal the content of your wallet.

What would be the best way to store in multiple locations, fo someone living in one Location, work place?
3051  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [Discussion] How to work of Signature Camping is performed.? on: June 19, 2021, 09:26:08 AM
Bitcointalk high rank members I would like to tell the members with rank what should I do now or to get merit.
What thread do you need to post to get merit.? Please give me links sir.?
I also post about need marit: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5343891.msg57235930#msg57235930
I hope you will give me a marit after reading my post. Thanks

You've already made quite a number of posts about merits, ranks and earning from the forum. Merit is not the ultimate goal of the forum, sharing useful content and creating quality discussion is, merits is the by product of this. You should focus on the primary reason the forum was created first and you'll find answers to the other of your questions along the way.
3052  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Differences between anonymity & privacy on: June 19, 2021, 09:09:54 AM
Bob is exposed and every transaction made from any of his four addresses can be censored by individuals. In other words, if Bob made an illicit activity from the 1Bob[...] address, they will all be considered what we call “tainted bitcoins”, because they were all in possession of a criminal. Even if someone made a completely legal transaction with Bob, he or she will be censored. People use mixers or/and mixing protocols to enhance their privacy.
I will like to understand more about what you mean by censoring. Being aware of someone's address is one thing, being able to affect what they do with that address is another. If Bob was accused of being engaged in an illegal activity through the known address no one can still technically 'censor' that address or stop then from moving it around, except it's an exchange address.

I agree that privacy and Bitcoin are different and Bitcoin transactions are not completely anonymous, as addresses are linked to amounts, but no real life identity behind them; reason why there are so many strategies to enhance privacy and remain as anonymous as possible.
3053  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What do we do when a campaign is discovered to be a fraud on: June 18, 2021, 07:55:35 PM
This is the same on some instances that even the project is known as worst both service and CS, if the campaign manager is reputed and trusted, then its exempted for red tags, like yobit before.
Yobit participants actually got some red tags from other members despite the reputation of the campaign manager.
I'm of the opinion that the previous reputation of a user should have a linted influence on how you judge them, they should get some benefit of the doubt if they have consistently showed good reputation, but if proven to be involved in a scam, it should be handled as such.
3054  Other / Meta / Re: Lightning Network subforum proposal. on: June 16, 2021, 02:29:06 PM
It has been asked before on a number of occasions, and members have given their opinion on it.
Some previous proposals;
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5151200.msg51363546#msg51363546
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5209227.msg53333101#msg53333101
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5222156.msg53744952#msg53744952

My take;
• It's a major trend in Bitcoin and deserves more attention from the forum, so a sub board would b a good idea,
• The current number of threads may not be enough to qualify for a new sub board, although I'm not sure quite how many they are. To create a better proposal, you could collate the most recent topics on it from the different boards, to make it easier for the admins to make a decision and show that people are interested in discussing it.
3055  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Best way to send BTC? on: June 15, 2021, 09:11:56 PM
How do I determine how much the transfer fees are from both Electrum and Coinbase to calculate or determine I'm sending the guy the correct amount of $533.00?
Transaction fees can be determined by checking the mempool status, there are currently some websites that offers such service; estimating the fees for the next blocks. This however only applies to electrum. Coinbase, where you hold majority of the funds fix their own ferrate using their own estimate, which is mosttimes different from the recommended one. There are also internal fees you'll need to pay.

To determine how much you'll pay;
• Use an estimator to determine the current ferrate (this is one - https://www.buybitcoinworldwide.com/fee-calculator/)
• Check that with the size of your transaction (inputs mostly)
• Calculate the internal fees on coinbase
• Attempt sending a transaction to compare the ferrate estimation on coinbase.
• Check to confirm if the desired amount can be sent.
3056  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoind sender proof on: June 15, 2021, 09:08:17 PM
is there anyway i can proof that this transaction is send by me?
This would depend on the means of initiating the transaction. If it was done through a non custodian wallet, you could sign a message proving you own the address, as others have suggested.

However, if you use a custodian service and do not own the private key, it becomes a bit more tricky as you do not own the private keys and cannot prove ownership of the wallet (cause you do not own it)
Screenshots of your email confirmation of the transaction seems your best bet, except it isn't full proof as screenshots can be faked, another option would be to send a small (pre determined) amount to some other of your address, to show you are the one sending from that address/account.
3057  Other / Meta / Re: Happy Birthday, theymos. on: June 15, 2021, 03:59:08 PM
We have very few days to celebrate the admin, so we could take advantage of today (regardless of whether it's the actual birthday or not).
It must be a hell of a ride being an integral part of Bitcoin's growth over the years through this forum and on other platforms. Your work on the forum is appreciated.
Put up your feet and relax a bit. Wish you many more birthdays with your family and the Bitcoin family.
3058  Economy / Economics / Re: Twitter ban, koo opens up. How will this play in Nigeriann business environment on: June 15, 2021, 03:31:19 PM
When things go as far as banning social media sites that gives power to freedom of speech, you just know that something isn't right. No matter the reason this should never be done. Not unless it gives a sense of state emergency level threat. But with such petty reasons?
The Nigerian government has been tilting towards dictatorship with several attempts to undermine democracy and the rule of law. Twitter was banned because a tweet of the president was deleted, but that seems like only a means to an end; social media regulations has been suggested and planned for a very long time before now and the government just used an excuse to fulfill their purpose.

Op, I assume by Koo, you're referring to the crowwe app opened by a member of the government's team. It is currently no longer available on Play store after a lot d Nigerians has given it negative feedback, although the creators claim they took it down themselves for development issues. Seems unlikely...
3059  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum rejects wallet file on: June 14, 2021, 07:15:45 PM
Have you tried contacting their support for the reason you were locked out and the solution to it?

My guess is you'll need to have access to the passphrase uses to encrypto the file inorder to access it

Take a look at this reply in another thread, you have slightly different issues with the OP, but it could help
3060  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Looking for a co-founder for an escrow service on: June 14, 2021, 07:03:58 PM
You did not need to create another thread in Dev & technical discussion board - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5343800.msg57233080#msg57233080
Multi posting is against the forum rules, and this is the appropriate section for your post, the other is wrongly placed.

I like the idea of an escrow service, to mediate transactions, especially if it's trustless, as that's one of the major objectives of Bitcoin.

You mentioned a smart contract being one of your long term goals; what should users trust on till then, before putting your funds at stake one needs a certain level of assurance or some sort of collateral. Basically, why should I trust you or your website?
