If it appears in a random position within the hex string, perhaps. But with only one hex string to go on there is really no easy way to test other eventualities.
Hmm no, nothing to do with the hex (assuming hex string means transaction comment for you). My post was rather clear: you could have that byte sequence in every other fields in your transaction.
3385  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin-QT Failed to read block error on: June 22, 2013, 01:46:31 PM
I downloaded bitcoin qt and everytime I try to load it says failed to read block. I have tryed uninstalling and reinstalling always get same error. Any help would be much appreciated.

I encountered the same problem (on v8.0.2) and figured out the cause.  When downloading for the first time, my antivirus (Trend Micro) was interfering with the download.  I stopped Trend (Task Manager -> uiSEAgnt.exe) and then I could download the whole blockchain without an error.  {This is easily reproducable.}   Once you get the whole blockchain, you can run Bitcoin-QT with antivirus just fine.  It has to do with the fast IO during the initial download.

At first, I was getting the "FAILED TO READ BLOCK" error randomly even 1000 blocks or so.  Start it up, and a few thousand more blocks come down - then get error again.

In the log file C:\Users\Gateway\AppData\Roaming\Bitcoin\debug.log

...

I started up an old version 6 Bitcoin client.  It too got the error; which is odd since I've used it on the same computer last year.  Then, I stopped the Antivirus and it downloaded the whole blockchain fine with version 8.0.2.

Again, once you get the full download, I have not seen the problem with the Antivirus running.  The IO DL is much slower with the higher blocks.

Hope this helps others...

Bad idea, you could have 746578743a in the transaction inputs, in the signature, in the output amounts, or even in the hashes you send the money to.
Actually you could have this everywhere.

Taking the last 746578743a in the transaction would be better
Taking the first 746578743a after the last 00000000 would be even better
Actually parsing the transaction would be the only way to be sure

can someone help me fish it out or something so it can be displayed cleartext>?

Also note that only those transactions that have "Tx version" = 2 have a message at the end.

Since messages are currently a maximum of 140 characters, the three bytes before the length byte should be 0.

The 00000000 at the end will never change... Only 1B describes the size of the comment.

I assumed since I'm writing an a 32 bit value to the serializer it would use 32 bits to encode the value. How would a value of 256 be encoded then?

VarInt... Should be something like fd0100, check on the wiki.

i dont know if its possible, but it would be nice if you could highlight the desired text and when you click quote have that section already trimmed and ready to post.
Good idea! That would save a lot of time when quoting a wall of text or a 'quote hell'
3395  Other / Meta / Re: Altcoins threads in newbie jail on: June 22, 2013, 07:38:23 AM
I notice a lot of attention is being paid to scrypt-based altcoins, but there are many SHA256 altcoins out there too.  Even though it may seem heavy handed, I think the top brass of this forum need to decide what non-Bitcoin cryptocurrencies (if any) can be discussed and then chroot or flat out ban that don't make the grade.  Personally I'm a fan of Litecoin, if for no other reason I don't think Bitcoin should go into the future alone.  Assuming more companies decide to accept Litecoin as a payment option and legal exchanges are created, it would be a great choice for smaller purchases on the Internet and in real life.
The point is not about which altcoin are the more promising. The rule must be precise, not just 'does it looks promising?'.
For example, allowing all SHA256 coins is acceptable, and allowing not a single altcoin is too. Or maybe all the altcoins on mtgox.
Of course this is only my opinion but when I see all the drama 'posts count -> activity', whereas it was necessary, I can't think an altcoin rule would be easily accepted. So the forum better makes the rule clear to understand.

By the way, as there are currently two threads here, can a mod divide this thread in two: altcoins in newbie sub forum, and altcoins in general. I find both interesting and I wouldn't want one to make us forget the other. Until then I rename this thread.

Whether scrypt altcoins remain allowed or not, please consider making a different theme (even just the color) for the altcoin subforum. That may make newbies realise it's something different out there.

Also, as everybody seem to agree, can theymos give his thoughts about the topic? (Banning altcoin threads in the noob forum)

3399  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is FASTCOIN the future coin of Africa? on: June 21, 2013, 02:27:20 PM
Im curious when altcoins will have real meaning. Not just label.

Thank you Gard1,

Altcoins or even the main stream coin's have meaning because we use them.  The more we use them, the greater the meaning and perhaps value.  Case in point, if we took the VHS vs BetaMax war's played out in the late 70's and early 80's.  Hands down BetaMax had a technological advantage over VHS, but VHS proved to be more affordable and in my option marketed better, which in the end gave it the DeFacto standard for Video tapes.

Why can't Crypto's be the same?  Why is it that this large planet of ours cannot use many different crypto's and reap the benefits of each one?  Bitcoin certainly is the defacto standard at the moment, but only time will tell how long it can hold onto its title.  Maybe it will continue to be the 800 lbs Gorilla for years to come, but that is only good news for Alt crypto's as well.  You need biodiversity, you need competition and you need multiple idea's to fill every niche we have yet to think of.

As time moves forward and if the planet chooses to embrace this technology, then crypto's in general will have more meaning, but if they are not used, they will just sit there collecting dust like like the treadmill or exercise equipment you never use.

I hope this gives you some insight, sorry if I may be a little winded.

Peace.
In "biodiversity", there's "diversity"
