341  Economy / Goods / Re: [wts] Bitcoin Black Swan theory Polo shirt on: February 13, 2014, 09:18:58 PM
So what's this black swan business all about ?

Basically a black swan event is the evolution (or creation if you prefer) of something so unexpected, so outside of the norm that it as a disproportional impact in on things.  Black swan events are hard to predict and cause major change.

From Wikipedia:
The black swan theory or theory of black swan events is a metaphor that describes an event that comes as a surprise, has a major effect, and is often inappropriately rationalized after the fact with the benefit of hindsight.

The theory was developed by Nassim Nicholas Taleb to explain:

The disproportionate role of high-profile, hard-to-predict, and rare events that are beyond the realm of normal expectations in history, science, finance, and technology
The non-computability of the probability of the consequential rare events using scientific methods (owing to the very nature of small probabilities)
The psychological biases that make people individually and collectively blind to uncertainty and unaware of the massive role of the rare event in historical affairs

Unlike the earlier philosophical "black swan problem," the "black swan theory" refers only to unexpected events of large magnitude and consequence and their dominant role in history. Such events, considered extreme outliers, collectively play vastly larger roles than regular occurrences.[1] More technically, in the scientific monograph Lectures on Probability and Risk in the Real World: Fat Tails (Volume 1), Taleb mathematically defines the black swan problem as "stemming from the use of degenerate metaprobability".[2]
342  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should the foundation apologize to GOX?! on: February 12, 2014, 03:58:32 PM
Don't tell me we have another Federal Reserve mentality who is always late to the game and re-acts instead of ACTS!  Hmmmm Mt. Gox for all its past problems does not look like the bad guy to me fellas.

You academics need to pull your head out of your asses and listen for once instead of being in love with your calculators.  Lift your head up.

Sorry but +1 for Gox.  Someone needs to redact some hurtful statements there.....

You need to examine the situation a little more closely.  Gox is clearly at fault.  Even with bugs they could manually process transactions (slowly) for those in need, that is if they have the coin to do so.
343  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [ANN] US/North American Bitfury sales NEW STOCK ***NOW SHIPPING*** on: February 12, 2014, 03:47:42 AM
Dear Buzzdave,

I have two empty Spotswood cases ready to house two more full rigs of fine Bitfury product, but Bitmain keeps getting my money lately :|

Any plans to become more price-competitive in the near future ? I'd love to buy another two full rigs worth, but the economics don't make sense at present.

I also bought elsewhere (asic cubes and more scrypt mining) even with open slots. I would love to see a lower price on boards for my rig.
344  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: bitwars.org spamming the blockchain network with 0.00000001 transactions on: February 12, 2014, 02:49:55 AM
Doesn't bitcoin have spam dust fee like litecoin to prevent this type of spam on the network?

I don't think the transactions will ever get confirmed will they?

Doesn't matter, they still burden the network.

I agree, it's not a matter of burdening the network. It's a pure spammy advertising which they're sending no transaction fee with. So technically, 1 BTC can send 100,000,000 transactions to different addresses. Let 1% of these check the link, you've got 1,000,000 visitors. Which $700 ad campaign can generate such traffic?

Smart, but not ethical.

1% do not check the link.  Maybe 10 people do.  None of them will buy anything.
345  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Donating 5 logo spots for Great Causes on mission to space to carry bitcoin flag on: February 12, 2014, 02:39:02 AM
how about A? The anarchy logo?

explain to me why that would be a good cause?
The cause is free and voluntary markets.  Here is a flag with the Bitcoin logo.  I can get you a UV rated sticker if you want to put it on the launch vehicle.

346  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Federation of SPACE on: February 12, 2014, 02:36:41 AM
"In Cryptography We Agree."

Not trust.

Trust is irrelevant.

We might all agree to use cryptography but the reason why we do is that we trust it.  We trust cryptography and math and a set of rules that are set.

"In Cryptography We Trust" reigns true for most Bitcoin users.
347  Economy / Goods / [WTS] Bitcoin bumper sticker "In Cryptography We Trust" for about 5mBTC shipped on: February 11, 2014, 08:21:45 PM

348  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Separating stable Bitcoin-currency from Bitcoin-stock, using 2 block chains on: February 11, 2014, 01:50:42 AM
<snip>

In any case, I encourage people to think about improvements!

Because we are all the engineers of the future... Haha Cheesy

Well... We try!

So please don't be mockful of my efforts... It's surely ridiculously wrong to some, but to me, it is the best of me. Took me loads of time, and I should be sleeping.

But what's important is that we beat on, boats against the current...  And try as we can (yes I did read it in English! Haha).

Thank you for your time, attention and consideration.

Goodbye!

The concept is interesting but not implementable or at least in a decentralized manner like Bitcoin.  What makes Bitcoin special is that it does not require any specific party to keep it alive or be trusted.  Even the simple concept of imputing the exchange rate in your system would not be possible to implement.  Who do we trust to put the price data into the system?   What is the price?  As this weeks events have shown we can't trust any one specific entity for the price and yet BITCOIN GOES ON.

(Bitcoin does not give a sh*t about its price, nor does it need to.)
349  Economy / Goods / [wts] Bitcoin Black Swan theory Polo shirt on: February 07, 2014, 01:08:51 AM
We now have 19 different styles of shirts!  Most are less then $18, but this one is a little more pricy at $29.99 as it is an embroidered polo.  We will have $16 t shirts as well in a week or so.

Always payable in BTC, low 99 cent US shipping.  We ship worldwide at actual cost.

350  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Bitcoin ATM Has a Dirty Secret: It Needs a Chaperone on: January 31, 2014, 01:25:52 PM
i would've punched him in the face for that if i was the owner smh face legal actions later lol but foreal i wouldve kicked him out in a heated argument

Very mature of ya Smiley

So if you owned a shoe shop and someone set up a shoe shop next door, you would presumably do the same?

Nope.  But if they were inside of your shop doing the same you have a different problem and certainly have the right to kick them out.

What will the launch vehicle be?

The plan is to have more than one wether balloon. One to ascend and the second to descend. We want  maximum time in the stratosphere and want 100% control throughout the entire mission so we will have controlled thrusters . This mission will  a lot of fun but more importantly will thrust bitcoin further into greatness and main stream attention

Well launching on a balloon makes it possible but most people do not think of balloon height as space (even though Felix Baumgartner does!).

Balloons get half way to space.

354  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Users Can Face Jail Time up to 15 years on: January 29, 2014, 10:03:38 PM
Create an alt called GayCoin and then you can go to jail twice.

And if you stay out of jail you also need to worry about being blown up at least if you go to the games.
355  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: North American Bitcoin Conference - Miami Beach - Jan 25 & 26th, 2014 on: January 24, 2014, 04:52:23 PM
This thread has surprisingly small activity. How many people are expected to attend?

I'm hoping I can attend.

True, surprisingly small activity ...

These threads for major conferences should not be so buried.  This conference has apparently a large number of attendees.

From just the dc meetup alone I think we have ten attendees.  The website says over 500.

357  Economy / Goods / Re: Selling the back of my friends neck... on: January 22, 2014, 09:16:19 PM
Added and changed prices. Updated main thread with a price chart

I guess what I was saying is your prices are so high (even after lowering) and the idea is also not new.  There are people in the USA that would SELL AND ORGAN for 12 BTC if it were legal let alone get a tattoo on the neck.  $2500 for a tattoo on the back??  You could find female (or male) dancers that are regularly seen exposed there who would do it for that.
358  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Argentina on lockdown- $25 max out of country purchase, 50% tax on beyond that on: January 22, 2014, 04:07:42 AM
Personally, I think they will move to bitcoin so they can still purchase online goods without facing these tax/tariff hits.

It will not work.  Packages are held at customs until valued.

Bitcoin will help Argentinians leave the country with money or come back with it through physically traveling as well as save in a a currency that does not devalue 30% in a year.
359  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoins destroyed if unused, to keep bitcoin supply known? on: January 22, 2014, 04:04:10 AM
please don't destroy my family's future

Exactly.

Nothing is gained by this except maybe 'knowing' how many Bitcoins are still usable.

I say a little mystery makes Bitcoin more exciting.

Thanks and any opinion(s) welcome!

With the name "Bitcoin Tool Store" you have so many possibilities.

Tools crossed with a Bitcoin logo behind them but still mostly visible.

A more industrial Bitcoin logo (screws or bolts in it)

Hex head bolts with the Bitcoin logo in them

Tools arranged in a circle around the logo.
