121  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Reddit’s science forum banned climate deniers. on: May 18, 2014, 01:35:33 AM
......
Climate change is fucking up a whole lot of people's lives already. It has killed a lot of people. This is not an unsubstantiated claim. During a catastrophic event the extra water may be all that knocked over and killed a lot of people's families. Same thing goes about heatwaves, drying out of certain areas and wild-fires.  We only have one planet so we can't afford to be careless with it.

The false attribution of human death or misery to climate change BY HUMANS is the issue.

Just like cigarettes don't cause cancer right because you can't put 2 + 2 together. The evidence is overwhelming.  The only thing not certain is the extent and what to do about it.

Indeed. Removing entire topics is nothing else than censorship and that is not the way of science.

On the surface you are correct.  But it is not an absolute.

If I was in a message board trying to have a discussion and a small group was yelling about how the earth was flat or 2+2=5 I would want to shut them up too.  Putting up debunked junk journal links proving 2+2=5 that link to further lies does not help.

In a public place you cannot shut them up, you must leave, argue or put up with it.  In a private setting that you control (like Reddit) you can ban them.
124  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Visa, MasterCard to pay $3bn to stay in Russia - Morgan Stanley on: May 17, 2014, 03:57:17 PM
This title is misleading. The article is just a rehash that says the new Russian regulations require them to pay, something that came out weeks ago. It does not say they are going to pay it. In fact, it says it would be unprofitable, since it is more than the revenue generated there by a large margin.

I cannot see MC/Visa paying.  This gives Russia the ability to do a form of 'chargeback' against MC/Visa which they cannot stand.  The outcome could be MC/Visa leaving Russia suddenly leaving Russia without them.

Either way I have my popcorn ready, Bitcoin will benefit even if only slightly.
125  Other / Politics & Society / Re: 'Lift the skirt’ campaign urges French schoolboys to skip trousers for a day on: May 17, 2014, 03:54:00 PM
Talked to some female colleagues and friends, who are by no means feminist, about this. They reacted to the title of the campaign, "Lift the Skirt", perceiving it as derogatory, alluding to prostitution or frivolous/indecent conduct.

Exactly. I seriously doubt whether this campaign has anything to do with protesting against the prevalent sexism. All I can see is that some of the perverted exhibitionists are making full use out of it.

Wouldn't you be less effected by it if you stopped actively trying to find this stuff?

Yeah cuz DOGE is *totally* killing it right now.

Ever since Wolong left, it has been dead in the water.

As much as I love the concept behind the DOGE meme ... its going the way of every other copycat crypto.

-B-

Without the rapid block reward halving Doge would be pretty low right now.  The next halving is in two months.

129  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Reddit’s science forum banned climate deniers. on: May 16, 2014, 03:33:22 PM
There is no such thing as "settled science." Science is a constantly evolving body of knowledge that by its very nature should demand an ever higher burden of proof.

They called the lipid hypothesis settled science, there was a time when it was a "scientific fact" that the smallest particles in the universe were atoms. It was very recently that it was "settled science" that no particle of matter could be in two places at the same time. All of these "facts" have been tested and shown to be either over simplifications or just wrong.

Any one that calls something "settled science" is trying to shut down a conversation. The next step is to label those that disagree and then to isolate them.

I don't if man made global warming actually occurs. I am no scientist, but i do know that using intellectual and economic fascism to silence opposition is not science.

Yes, people are allowed to have any and all opinions.  Just like others are allowed to ignore fringe elements in order to be productive.

The simple fact is ignoring this issue will have exceptionally grave consequences if man-made global warming is true.  These guys want to wait for "proof" which will only exist after the climate and ecosystem as we know it has been destroyed.

I can ask a 100th time what the fallacy with the basic cause behind global warming is and the question will be removed from the quote and ignored for the 100th time.
Funny how a theory of global destruction is such a big deal when radiation from Fukushima is blanketing the globe and is a very real threat proven to exist. Why do you consider this less of a threat?

Fukushima radiation is not causing problems outside of the immediate area (10 miles).

http://xkcd.com/radiation/

Living near a coal plant is far worse then living near a nuclear plant.  Coal plants spread more radiation then nuclear even when you count in major accidents like TMI and Fukushima.

Protip -   The radiation caused by both is basically a blip in terms of deaths compared to coal mining accidents.   And the deaths in the coal mines are a blip when compared to the deaths caused by coal particulate emissions.
130  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Turkey coal mine disaster: Least 238 dead on: May 16, 2014, 03:03:10 PM
Did you know that in the UK, when the mines were still privately owned, it was said that a mineowner was more concerned over the loss of a pit pony than of a miner. Why ? Because he would have to pay to replace the pony.

Coal miners are treated as sub-humans in almost every part of the world. May be things are a little bit better in the EU and the US, but every where else, their lives are treated as worthless. And the sad thing about the coal mines in the US / EU is that many of them are closing down, unable to compete with the cheaper imports from China and India.

I am not sure where you get that information from.  US coal is doing well, year by year changes are small as a percentage and exports from the USA are growing, quadrupling since 2005.

China and India are both coal importers not exporters so they certainly are not driving US coal out of business.

wasn't there a lot of protest against same-sex marriage over there?

Most of the general public in France were against recognizing the same-sex marriage. But still the Socialist ultra-left wing president, François Hollande legalized it in 2013.

Most polls show 60% support for gay marriage in France and rising.

^AMD cards die within a year of constant mining sometimes longer and they are better engineered than these ants (although the ants are pretty solid)... I know people are paying 90% new price for 6 month old hardware... That doesn't make it smart though.

Good luck OP.

I would disagree after using both.  Ants are engineered so much more conservatively.  First of all, most all of my AMD cards other then XFX survived many years with at most a fan replacement.  Overclocking kills cards more then anything else, and that is easier to do on a video card than on an ant because you cant mod voltage without changing the hardware itself.

Unmodified ants run cooler overall even overclocked.  They hit an overclock threshold where they generate more errors then additional speed (unlike video cards) so really almost nobody will hit them harder then 200GH mostly because it is TOTALLY POINTLESS.

Ants kill power supplies more than owners kill ants.

Sure, put one in a baking room and give it super shitty power and it will fail, but so far that is not the norm.

133  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTS] 9 Antminer S1 miners on: May 15, 2014, 02:44:32 PM
Asking price lowered to 0.43 btc per unit.

Considering that these have been running almost half a year and new ones can be purchased for ~.45 or so, can I offer you what I think is reasonable?

I am in manitoba so shipping would be cheap as well. Willing to offer 0.33 BTC for one unit. Mainly because I assume if this thing goes POOF in the next month or two no sort of warranty agreement would cover it.

As it is in your country already there are several advantages to buying a used one over buying a new one from Bitmaintech.  Maybe not full price but these things are going for 90% of new price even used.
134  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: WTB Antminer S1, Offering. on: May 15, 2014, 02:41:42 PM
Well if you really need to get rid of your S1's, or get the BTC.
I am willing to offer 60% of bitmaintech antminer prices for your antminers.

I am looking to buy up to 5 BTC and possibly more.

Used Antminers in the same country as the buyer are going for about 90% of bitmaintechs price.  Simply put they are worth nearly as much as new because they can get to you faster and are pretty durable miners.
135  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTS] Exceptional 2011 one BTC Casascius coin! -running- on: May 15, 2014, 02:39:46 PM
Probably best to eBay it..ungraded for 3.9BTC is not going to happen.

Kind of a shame that the market is not here and it is on eBay.  The 2011 series 1 ungraded go for about $1500 there so minus fees that is about $1350.

Graded coins go for more, and series 2 which are worth LESS then a series 1 tend to go for $1900 in good condition.   I would estimate that if you got it graded as something ms-63 or greater you could get $2500 for it.
136  Other / Politics & Society / Re: CNN national poll: Rand Paul 13%, Bush 13%, Ryan 12%, Huckabee 10%, Christie 9% on: May 15, 2014, 02:26:51 AM
I would like to see Christie vs Clinton.  While RCP still has Clinton in the lead, I think Christie would win.

Christie is not an ideal candidate for the GOP. I would prefer Rand Paul over Chris Christie anytime. But still, it is almost impossible for a GOP candidate to win the elections, given the demographic changes within the general population.

Actually pulling away from this hardcore tea party crap would bring in many Regan Democrats.  Many people see Christie as someone who will be able to bridge both sides of the isle and do things that are better for the country than just one party.

I think Christie is the only Republican so far that could actually win.
137  Other / Politics & Society / Re: An complete argument for same-sex marriages. You can't prove it wrong on: May 15, 2014, 02:21:36 AM
It's All About Choices Anyone can have a romantic and/or sexual relationship with anyone they choose. No one is forced to be with anyone. In order to get married, you need to be with someone of the opposite gender. If that's not something you want to do, then realize you aren't going to get married either instead of demanding the government needs to change to fit your choices.

you know marriage is suppose to be a union of blessing from god, but the homosexuals wanted marriage cause they wanted to reap the benefits and union.  Thats why they fought so hard for.

Says your religion but not all religions.  Why do you keep asking the government to meet your needs but not others?

On the other hand, our nation was built upon Christian values and the bible says in Genesis 2:24 - "Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh."

No matter how many times that talking point is said....

NOTHING COULD BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH.

Unless you mean another country other then the USA, the USA was born from religious persecution and the constitution (as tortured and shit on as it has been as of late) was designed to keep religion out of government so.....

ALL RELIGIOUS and NON RELIGIOUS PEOPLE COULD BE FREE FROM TYRANNY.

Your statements and others above wishing to FORCE THEIR SPECIFIC religious views on people illustrate that point exactly.

140  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTS] Bitmaintech Antminer S2 1TH brand new about $2070 on: May 14, 2014, 04:01:09 PM
Can you just offer a discount code instead of having you order for us. As far as I can tell you are making around $50 per discount code/order so if you'd be willing to offer me just the code I'd turn around and give you $50.

Yes, Certainly will do this if it is possible!

I will sell mine for $50 straight up BTC.

5 available currently.
