361  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Antminer S1 Soon at a Loss - What to do With It? on: July 05, 2014, 07:20:18 AM
Is undervolt same thing as underclock?

Undervolting is changing the voltage to a lower voltage. Since power used is based off the square of the voltage, a small change in volatge can mean big power savings.  But of course it can't run as fast.

Underclocking means turning down the speed (clock speed) that the miner runs at.  This can be done usually without touching the voltage.  Typically most people try to run the fastest clock as the lowest possible voltage needed to get them to the desired clock.
In other words they both are ways to increase electrical efficiency of the machines while reducing overall hashrate.

Undervolting will significantly increase the efficiency per watt, you may not necessarily see a decrease in hashrate.

Underclocking will significantly decrease the hashrate, you may not necessarily see a increase in efficiency.

That doesn't make sense. If you limit the voltage, doesn't it automatically decrease in hashrate? Anyway, I'm going to do both to see if there is any difference

Not necessarily.  See my post above.  The i5-3470 and the i5-3470S that Intel sells are more or less the same CPU, just Intel had a higher quality on the 3470S chips and bins them as such.

Since each miner's chip is different, you have to trial and error.

If undervolting would not necessarily decrease the hashrate then why would everyone not do this to increase profitability?

When a retailer like Intel ships a CPU, it has been tested to see what is the minimum power need to run at a certain speed (part of the binning process).  They bump up the power used by the chip just to ensure stability.  A lot of people who are enthusiasts run at stock speed and just lower the voltage.  If you don't like tweaking, Intel sells variants like the 3470S which is a low power version of the 3470 which they have tested to be able to run lower voltage and be stable.

Most miner companies will bump up the power just for stability in higher temp areas.
363  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: 400GH/s - how many BTC can you extract? on: July 05, 2014, 07:13:24 AM
I don't know about some of these calculators. My 230gh/s earns me around $4.5 us/day and I got over $30 worth overnight off p2pool.
Go have a look on my node (in sig) if you don't believe me. It's all there under stats and payouts.

With those numbers you
1) have free power
2) are getting incredibly lucky - $30 overnight, a 3.5TH Neptune can't even do that overnight.

Most people would not be able to follow in your footsteps - it's why everybody can't be a Warren Buffet.
364  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Start-up capital on: July 05, 2014, 07:10:26 AM
Unless your thinking about throwing the equivalent of 6 figures at mining equipment and are able to secure some sort of sweet deal you will more likely than not end up with less than you started with by the time your rigs are consuming more power than they are generating in coin.  <---any non pre-order will basically hit this point within a month or two at the latest.

You would need to throw 7 figures at it now - basically you would need your own ASIC or use raw chips from somebody else which you could buy in bulk. The retail units most people see for sale are losing propositions.
365  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Old miner ->Collectible Item??? on: July 05, 2014, 07:08:08 AM
Old miners will be become e-waste like everything else.  Only the rare items like the first 10 Avalons that might have a story to them like Jgarzik's would have any worth to them.
366  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: BFL Monarch, in the Cloud.. (600GHs) on: July 05, 2014, 07:05:20 AM
As Searing said BFL's end game is to file brankruptcy and hope they can just say sorry we failed.  They will have to cook the books and make it look like they paid for parts and fabrication when in fact they would be sending payment to themselves and could easily purchase some BTC and hide it from investigators.

As noted by Searing's paltry $10 check, the compensation will not be worth it.  Knowing Josh can never drop a bar of soap is what the customers should be hoping for.
367  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: electric cost ripoffs on: July 05, 2014, 07:01:35 AM
You people should take a look on this thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=622998.0 Find a nice colocation and ship your miners there!
This !

Colocation makes sense if you are shipping a significant number or miners from the start of acquisition.  If you're sending 1 S1 over, the $20 to ship it negates any profit the S1 might make.

750s are not worth it to resell for gamers, but probably better for heat and electricity usage.  In the long run they would be more efficient.  Short term mining get a 270.

Sometimes I grow Gray hair waiting for these LTC blocks to pop out. f5 f5 refresh I wish I could come help you move ele.  Cheesy

MMmm Can a select active few of us get some inside info on coins about to be added?

The current plan is...a lot of them.  I'm not doing any Proof of Stake coins (I have no interest in modifying the pool server to support those).  But if it's traded on Cryptsy, it is *probably* going to get added, except for the ones like LOT/MEOW which have bottomed out to absolute 0 due to no bids and a wall of sells at 1 satoshi each.

Looks like we are stuck with those LOT/MEOW coins for the past week. I did see a little DOGE here and there but mostly LTC.
370  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Genesis Mining getting too powerful for scrypt? on: July 05, 2014, 06:42:47 AM
I've seen too many shill accounts promoting genesis mining and they all have similar grammar. Most accounts were created in beginning of may and have low activity ad 1/2 of their posts talk about genesis mining, and they even put in a hyperlink but no referral.  That makes me suspect they have employees making shill accounts on here to promote their "business".  Whether or not it is a ponzi I cannot say, but it is not profitable even with their new rates.
371  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 12-word passwords on: July 04, 2014, 09:08:04 PM
As noted above by Danny we would need to know which Bitcoin client is used since that directs which method of recovery.  If we assume it was the BitcoinQT client on PC as most users use, then DrG's recovery method would be a good start.  Although it sounds like he's using a Mac.
372  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie question about adresses on: July 04, 2014, 09:03:59 PM
I think the confusion might be with inputs and outputs.

if somebody sent you 5 BTC, and you decide to spend 2.5, what the bitcoin client does in reality is send 2.5BTC to the address you're sending to and then send 2.5BTC back to yourself.  When it sends it back to yourself it creates a new address.  You can see this by using blockchain.
373  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is it profitable buying and selling USB miners? on: July 04, 2014, 09:01:09 PM
You would be better off buying small physical crypto coins and reselling those as novelties.  Novelties always command more than they're worth, you just need to release them slowly so as not to glut.

Keep you offline wallet simple.  Don't go into overly complicated tasks that you've never done before because you will probably make an error.
375  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Martingale System on: July 04, 2014, 08:53:59 PM
I have been told that martingale end up with losing everything  Sad

People usually do because they don't quit whilst they're ahead and get greedy and keep going until they've lost it all.

The first bet that you win you are ahead.  Most people will not quit after winning just one bet.

Try martingale on PD during Happy Hour and see how hard it is to get to 50K.  I tried for 3 happy hours and finally succeeded only to have the autobet continue 7 more rounds and lose almost everything.
376  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: BFL Monarch, in the Cloud.. (600GHs) on: July 04, 2014, 08:35:56 PM
While I agree with Searing, you have to wonder what will happen WHEN (not if) BFL goes bankrupt.  Clearly it's not a shock to them that so many people hate the company.  Their forums magically go down for a couple days and posts critical of them are thoroughly expunged.

If Josh did a good job of playing hide the sausage, which is all he is good for, then you will not be getting anything in a class action other than vindication of know you were scammed.  BFL's creditors will get first pickings at any assets they have, the lawyers will get paid, and you will get a $7 check.

If you think the class action will succeed in procuring funds the reject the cloud mining.
377  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Block erupter cube OR antminer S1 on: July 04, 2014, 11:49:47 AM
Great,

I have managed to pick one up with around 8 weeks use for £125 ..

Is that a good enough deal ?

Cheers.

Not a bad deal.  Since this next jump will be minimal you might make your money back.  Don't expect a profit.  if it comes it will be icing on the cake.

I did pause before accepting the offer, I was wondering what the consequences were. c'mon? No commercial entity would willingly give away free "money" unless there are commercial gains. By accepting the 12 months 600GHs Cloud contract, what options have I limited my self to??

My original purchase was not the Monarch. I took the upgraded option from 50GHs BFL Singles (x2) to a 600GHs Monarch. Due to further h/w delays, BFL doubled my order as compensation. An additional Monarch was put at the back of the delivery que. I wonder if I'll get the physical h/w before BFL offers me the 2nd Monarch, as another 1 year Cloud contract.

So, what happens after my one year contract ends and BFL still hasn't delivered? Hey, maybe there will be an option for Monarch owners to upgrade to the 1THs Imperial Monarch, but by having accepted the Cloud, have I excluded my self?

Not 'happy',

Dear Jason,

Thanks for being a Butterfly Labs customer. Your patience and loyalty are
greatly appreciated.

While we wait for the 1TH revision of the PCB to make it through manufacturing,
we have a supply of boards that do not meet the desired specs and thus are not
suitable to be shipped directly to customers. However, with this limited
quantity of boards, we can deliver processing power remotely to some customers.

Although we are under no legal obligation to do so, as a courtesy to customers
who have been waiting the longest, we will provision these boards in a hosted
environment (BFL Cloud Mining facilities), equal to the original processing
power you ordered. Cloud Mining will be deployed in queue order and since you
are receiving this email, you are eligible at no cost to you (we pick up the tab
for hosting and electricity). Once the new 1TH boards arrive and assembly and
delivery has begun, we will ship your full original order plus previously
announced upgrade, and free Cloud Mining will be terminated.

If you are interested in receiving Cloud Mining while we wait for board
revisions, click the link below to activate your free temporary Cloud Mining
account.

BFL Cloud Mining

After 1 year pretty much any mining eq will be near obsolete.  The singles they shipped last year are now near useless just like the Avalons from last year.  Just take the cloud mining for 1 year and be happy you don't have to pay for electricity.  That is sadly your best option with BFL.
380  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: What would you do? Mine with $40k or purchase Bitcoin? on: June 28, 2014, 07:06:20 AM
Glad it's not just me!  I've become an RMA/store exchange expert these days.  Tip:  even if the store says they only make returns for 30 days you can always play dumb and bring something in later hoping to get that clerk that just doesn't care (saved me the hassle on a motherboard & 2 video cards once).

p.s.  it is too fun.

It is fun until you awake at 2:47AM to the smell of fried PSU with your smoke detector going off and the lights in the house are out.  yeah good times  Cheesy

tell me more.  how did you do it?

did you break the number one rule of psu?

run that mofo  psu  24/7/365 at 90 percent capacity =  why did my psu die?

Seasonic X750 Gold running 24/7 at about 60% of capacity (2x7950 Litecoin mining).  PSU made it made it 3 months from date of purchase.  Surprised my Seasonic went when the Enermax Lepa and ChannelWell stuff never failed.
