381  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: wallet.dat on: May 29, 2011, 02:08:13 PM
The short answer is no.

The longer answer is all transactions are stored on the network, but you can only claim ownership of your coins if you posses the private key which is stored in your wallet.dat.

In general these coins are lost forever unless you use data recovery service/tools.

I am a person of higher-than-average intelligence and I am an IT professional.

I am an unemployed person of lower than average intelligence.
I managed to buy bitcoins after 20ms research.

Me too. I wonder what would happen if these above average intelligence people would let us run the countries  Grin
383  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Real names on: May 29, 2011, 11:27:28 AM
our legal names are no more "real" than our internet names, just as dollars are no more "real" than bitcoins.

I completely agree, Neo.

"Real" names are only really necessary in order for governments to data-match and keep track of you.

Don't forget that friends and family might like to call you by your name
384  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: LOTS of connection problems for everyone! on: May 29, 2011, 11:23:45 AM
Well, I suspect your bitcoin.conf is not being read for whatever reason, but I'm out of ideas at the moment

if i'm using win 7 on my macbook to connect to my home external ip would i want to check UPnP or not?  does UPnP open up a specific port on my laptop for client?

what r the terminal commands to -addnode in win 7 from vmware fusion?
cypherdoc,

UPnP is technology for automatic port forwarding. It's meant to open ports on a remote device(your case router). Unfortunately, not all devices support it.
In your case, we did it manually so you should leave it off.

On a 32bit system you do something like:
Code:
cd c:\program files\bitcoin

Code:
bitcoin.exe -addnode=69.164.218.197 -addnode=64.22.103.150 -addnode=173.242.112.53 -addnode=178.79.147.99 -addnode=184.106.111.41 -addnode=91.85.220.84 -addnode=173.224.125.222 -addnode=86.5.50.90 -addnode=178.255.199.86

cyrus1985, you can find fallback nodes on our wiki

Could you open terminal and change directory(cd) to where you put your bitcoin.conf. Then type:

Code:
ls -la
Code:
pwd

Post the output of both commands

where do i cd to?  bitcoin.conf is where it usually is:  Library/Application Support/Bitcoin

That's probably the problem. It should be in /Users/[your username]/Library/Application Support/Bitcoin/

If time is of essence, you may want to include a small fee. This will ensure that your transaction is included in the next block and you receive it in less than 10mins

Edit: it all depends on how complex your coins are and how recently it's been used. For example if you have 2 coins which are made of lots of 0.1s and you just received it, it will take ages to make a trasaction again. On the other hand if you send 1 coin which is whole and you had it for a while, you won't need a fee and it will get delivered within 10 minutes
392  Other / Meta / Re: What are the rules? on: May 28, 2011, 11:08:49 PM
I'm sorry but I'm just starting here, but where do I find the rules?

There are no rules and nobody will hold your hand.
Good moral guidance is - don't do to other what you don't want done to you.
Enjoy!

Sorry - I'm not saying anything more as I don't wanna be blamed for damaged cards. Read the mining board about overclocking and underclocking before doing anything else
394  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: What's the best way to watch BTC price action live? on: May 28, 2011, 10:56:03 PM
You can watch it on IRC. On Freenode channel #bitcoin-market you can see every trade in real time. On #bitcoin-watch you can see every transaction on the network.
There's also this:

Now that you discovered wonders of underclocking, you might as well slightly overclock your card. It is done by increasing core clock. Don't be greedy here - you'll damage your cards if you set it too high

I personally keep fans at 100% all the time, but what helps lowering temperatures the most is lowering memory clock to ~300MHz. You can do it with MSI Afterburner. Read more about it on the Mining board

What does the memory clock do exactly? Im techy, but never messed with gpus before. Also, wouldn't that effect my hash rate?

It will improve it. Try using search function. These things have been discussed 100s of times

Matt Corallo had a Windows binary to probe ports. You should ask him - he may have one for OS X too. But if you are getting more than 8 connections, that means it's working.
To see if your clients on macbook on Win7 are connecting to your desktop you can look in debug.log file. Simpler way is to just leave these clients off for a while. Once you launch it again, it should start downloading the blockchain immediately. If so, everything's working
