ahh I see what you mean.
when will 21 million btc be reached anyways? and when that does happen when ppl mine, they only get transaction fees that ppl paid. How much are transaction fees generally? im assuming less that 50 btc

You could find most of the answers if you read FAQ:

Hi cypherdoc. Try #bitcoin-otc channel on freenode. Look for MagicalTux. As far as I know he is in charge. If you get no answer there, he's probably asleep as it's 4:40am in Japan at the moment
824  Economy / Economics / Re: 1 BTC = 20 USD on: April 25, 2011, 07:14:50 PM
I have to agree with dissipate. For non-technical people there is only one way to convert their currency into bitcoins, and that is coinpal. If there were more points of exchange like this, people would not only be trading at mt-gox/bitcoin-otc/etc, but shops would start accepting it and it would get more widely adopted in general.

It's not the matter of acquiring - it's about the ability to exchange the currency you have to BTC
825  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BitCon! When and Where? on: April 25, 2011, 03:57:19 PM
Vegas is cheep for most Americans but not for anyone else, as I understand it.
London and Paris are cheep from NYC.  What about Cancun Mexico? Or Belize?
What cities are cheep for you to reach if you are outside USA?

London might be very cheap to get to, but is a very expensive city. I would say - Barcelona, Spain. It is very cheap to get to with Ryanair or Easyjet for anyone from EU. Just don't know if it's convenient for guys from US

828  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcon! When and Where? on: April 25, 2011, 03:20:13 AM

I would advocate for a country that does not harvest fingerprints and eye-scans from law-abiding foreign travellers for databases, upon border entry.

Do they scan everyone or just pick some at random?

Everybody and have done for quite some time ... more than 5 years now I think.

Edit: actually longer, since 2002, it was part of the whole Patriot Act police state expansion boom. http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/info/info_1336.html

Iris scans and ten fingerprints from anybody entering as a requirement to get a visa for entry.

I remember as a kid dreaming of going to the USA - the land of free. How things change..

Grin For people traveling to USA I imagine the converstion at customs:

What is the puprose of your visit Sir?
Oh, nothing - just gonna promote new digital currency that cannot be shut down and is gonna destroy banking system and governments around the world

Pleasure then.

I'd say more like:
Sir, this way please - these gentlemen are gonna escort you to guantanamo bay  Grin

831  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: losing bitcoins? on: April 24, 2011, 08:29:46 PM
From FAQ:
Quote
How does Bitcoin work?

Bitcoin utilizes public/private key digital signatures (ECDSA). A coin has its owner's public key on it. When a coin is transferred from user A to user B, A adds B’s public key to the coin and signs it with his own private key. Now B owns the coin and can transfer it further. To prevent A from transferring the already used coin to another user C, a public list of all the previous transactions is collectively maintained by the network of Bitcoin nodes, and before each transaction the coin’s unusedness will be checked.

Private key is yours for ever and ever. If someone gets hold of it - sayonara to your bitcoins
832  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: losing bitcoins? on: April 24, 2011, 08:17:01 PM
When you spend your coins you sign it with your private key. Other nodes can verify it because they have your public key. No one else can spend it unless they have your private key. If two people spend the same coins(with the same key), the first transaction is considered valid

what exactly are you trying to achieve?

if I understood you correctly, possible solution could be to use virtual machine and use NAT.
836  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Most people are not capable of keeping their wallets safe? on: April 23, 2011, 03:29:41 PM
I suspect that the biggest problem will be trojans/viruses/exploits if wallet remains unencrypted. This should be addressed ASAP.

As to the other two points, backing up and remembering your password are trivial tasks. It's not 80's anymore - computers are here to stay and will become increasingly bigger part of our lives. We should learn to interact with them.

The way he talks resembles a priest lecture. Anyway, he's an idiot and has no idea what he's talking about. Just leave him be
839  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Awwww, this is sad =/ on: April 22, 2011, 11:34:31 PM
In my opinion, if someone said they were not interested, you should just leave them alone. It's their loss. As John Lennon once said: "You can not tell people anything - you can only leave signpost. They have to find the way for themselves"
