Adam and psy,

You've both got some interesting ideas and I'd love to continue discussing them with you, but I feel we're derailing this thread. To me, a blog might have some content that like "Dude! My jalapeno finally arrived!" with pictures and maybe some whining about the delivery, followed by a description of the author's dinner. That's perfectly acceptable for a bitcoin oriented blog.

The models we have been brainstorming are more like online magazines. Adam, I think you should create a thread specifically for your project. I'll be composing an email to you immediately after posting this.

Would you ridcule someone who is OCD for putting thing in order or wanting everything a certain way? the people who want to recover lost coins are similar, it grates on them that there are, what they consider, wasted coins. Wasted coins represent wasted work to them. They want all their Ducks in  a row and all the coins in use.

We just need to explain to them that this isn't what everyone else wants and that the system is fine as is and then move on. They won't see, or agree with what the majority of us says, but they will just be whistling in the wind.

I disagree. IMO, those who wish to force a method of reclaiming "lost" coins into the protocol are more likely practitioners of the xkcd method of extrapolating.
384  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Let's make a BLOG! on: June 08, 2013, 05:26:45 PM
Yes, and I have some original ideas on how to monetise it with advertising without being too much of a pain or distracting to the users, but quality articles would really be a must.
Let's say: would you mind spending 60 seconds or less of your time as "payment" to read a quality article, knowing in advance that most of that "payment" would go to the authors pocket?

60 seconds per article? Probably not.

60 seconds on a landing page/ad, knowing the content is going to be high quality? Probably.

Problem is, for many readers either one constitutes "too much of a pain or distracting".
385  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How about setting a MAX coin age ?! on: June 08, 2013, 02:34:06 PM
I've never quite understood the natural objection to lost coins that some people seem to have.  Many other perceived problems with Bitcoin are explained but this one is usually taken as axiomatic.

Is it the lost granularity that concerns people?  Is it a fear that people will hoard bitcoins? (Economic flamewar aside, I don't see why hoarders would be less likely to lose coins than everyone else).

Perhaps it's just because existing currencies are not so fragile.  I don't see a gold forum parallel to bitcointalk.org with topics like "Help!  I accidentally launched 3.8 tonnes of gold into deep space."

The problem as I understand it is that there is a finite number of Bitcoins that will be mined, 21 Million. After that any coins that are hoarded and forgot about or destroyed by damaged media, are out of circulation, forever. This will lead to the number of BTC shinking over time.

This is correct but it's not really a "problem."

Since we don't really need more BTC at the moment, I've begun working on a page to replace the current "Pledge & Donate" page at Bitcoin100.org and I'd like appreciate suggestions or comments you might have.

Quote
Donate
Donations made to Bitcoin 100 may be sent to our vanity address: 1BTC1oo1J3MEt5SFj74ZBcF2Mk97Aah4ac

Bitcoins received will go to charities and non-profits that meet the (informal) criteria decided upon by the Bitcoin 100 management team. Organizations under consideration are discussed publicly at the BitcoinTalk Bitcoin Forum thread specifically created for this and your participation is welcomed.

All expenses involved in maintaining this site and the loose knit animal that is Bitcoin 100 are covered personally by Bruno, Rassah, and edd. Other than miners’ fees, one hundred percent of bitcoins received at the 1BTC1oo vanity address will be disbursed as donations to Bitcoin accepting charities.

At the moment, however, we need your help convincing charities to publicly accept bitcoins more than we need the bitcoins themselves.

I'm also working on a page that will include a list of charities under consideration and their current status (e.g. proposed, contacted, cooperating, etc.). This page will eventually accept suggested additions by visitors to the site who sign in as wordpress subscribers.

A list of all charities that Bitcoin 100 has donated to so far is now up at the website: http://bitcoin100.org/charities/

If I could find a way to get this organization to get bitpay on their site, do you think they could be a part of bitcoin 100?

http://www.santisookdogsandcats.org/en/

How simple is it for someone to get bitpay on there? They have paypal there already, so is setting up bitpay similar?

Would it make any sense for them to just accept Bitcoin as Bitcoin, instead of cashing it out? They can use it to pay for domain and web hosting, and other online services, and if the price keeps going up (instead of down  Angry )it can eventually be a nice emergency fund.

Here's the response from Adam at BIPS:

Hello Ed,

It's nice to speak with you again. BIPS converts Bitcoins to any local currency at
the equivalent USD rate posted on our website. When logged into an account
configured with the local currency, in this case Thai Baht, BIPS displays the
current buy/sell rate on the website in that currency. The minimum transfer is set
by the user with free transfers in Denmark and Canada. For Thailand our bank charges
an equivalent $7.5 USD fee for each transfer which recipients are responsible for as
well as any fees along the way (AKA Inter-bank fees). For this reason we allow
merchants and users to set their own minimum transfer levels to accommodate their
own preferences. We charge no additional banking fees at this time and have no plans
to do so. I believe we can find someone capable of assisting in setting up this
installation for no additional cost. Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for
merchants to accept Bitcoins and as long as there aren't design elements outside of
installing the Bitcoin payment plugin required there will be no additional cost. If
I have missed something or there is anything else you would like to know please
don't hesitate to ask.

Regards,

Adam

You could also include on the website a list of suggested organizations which accept bitcoin but were not given the official Bitcoin 100 donation, that way people who want to donate to those organizations can do on their own. Is there a complete list of all the organizations so we can go back and give extra donations to the ones we like?

There isn't an official list yet but it's definitely a high priority.

I was also thinking that it might be a good idea to list organizations that didn't quite qualify for whatever reason. For example, I learned today that both the EFF and the FEE accept bitcoin donations. I think these are both great organizations and will probably donate to them from my personal funds, but I don't think they really fit the criteria for receiving the official Bitcoin 100 donation.
390  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How about setting a MAX coin age ?! on: June 07, 2013, 07:03:40 PM
I am not sure whether it is already discussed.

Is it ok to set a max coinage (5 - 10 years), so coins that are were not spent for specific can be invalidated.

and, to distribute these coins through mining rewards (throughout for next few years).

So that, no coins were ever lost. Smiley

"Dear, it's finally time to retire and spend some of those bitcoins on that Casascius gold bar you bought back in 2012."

"You're right, honey! Let me just import them into our active wallet... Oh no!"

"What's wrong?"

"The coins expired!"

"When?"

"Yesterday."
391  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: What has caused the latest drop > 114USD ( Now 107) on: June 07, 2013, 05:37:36 PM
I have a theory.

At the San Jose Conference, some very interesting ideas and partnerships sprang into being. One or more start-ups may be moving from the "idea" phase to the "execution" phase and require capital that necessitates exchanging some bitcoins for more conventional currencies.
392  Economy / Services / Re: Bitcoin 100: Developed Specifically for Non-Profits on: June 07, 2013, 05:19:46 PM
Great idea, I didn't realize we had a group like this in our community. I would like to make a donation, is this group still active?

I have also persuaded The Fessler Foundation to begin accepting bitcoin donations. The Fessler Foundation funds research in new treatments and technology for individuals with spinal cord injuries. More info here:Bitcointalk Forum Post

Am I the only one who missed this post?

Rassah, this looks to me like a very good candidate that's already met the requirements.
393  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Let's make a BLOG! on: June 07, 2013, 04:46:49 PM
Was thinking about that, using a revenue sharing model, where each author would get a % of the advertising revenues for his posts, the site keeping a small % just to pay operating costs.

You'd need an editor to keep content at a certain level. If done right, this could eventually become an online newspaper/magazine without requiring paid subscriptions.
394  Economy / Services / Re: Bitcoin 100: Developed Specifically for Non-Profits on: June 07, 2013, 12:46:46 PM
And obviously Goat is one of the most trustworthy people on here...

I'm afraid that opinion isn't shared by everyone.

I've corresponded with Adam at BIPS so maybe I can convince him to reduce fees for charities, as BitPay does.
395  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Approximately, how many bitcoin are lost FOREVER!!! on: June 07, 2013, 11:39:59 AM
The 21 million limit imposed by Satoshi was just an arbitrary number.

Let's say one million coins have been "lost forever." If Satoshi had made the limit 20 million and no one lost any, the network would be in exactly the same place it is now.

Even if we take into consideration the fact that more coins may be lost, as the value increases (for whatever reason), the precautions users take to avoid losing them will increase accordingly.

So far I got three yes's for AntiWar.com, so unless there are objections, I'll send the donation tomorrow.

Also, another charity has added a Bitcoin donation option with the help of our new friends/partners at Fr33Aid and BitcoinNotBombs: http://www.songsoflove.org/bitcoins/
Please feel free to review this charity. They have been featured on quite a few news shows, and have been around for a while. I also don't expect any objections to them, and will likely send out a donation tomorrow as well.

Songs of Love seems to fit all the qualifications. I notice that one of the certified child life specialists on the Hospital Staff Advisory Board is from a prominent hospital here in San Antonio. If I ever run into her, I'll be sure to thank her for accepting Bitcoin donations.
397  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ways to swim in bitcoin on: June 07, 2013, 12:52:27 AM
Sure.  Just send a Satoshi each to millions of private keys, then start printing the private keys, and eventually you'll have enough printouts to swim in.

Alternatively, one could print out the blockchain and go swimming in Bitcoin vs. swimming in bitcoins. Cheaper, too.

A handshake, maybe?

I always thought it was some kind of flag.

Unless a Jedi can brute-force or guess the keys Grin.

There are other options.

Deleted wallets on old computers might one day be salvaged by "bitcoin treasure hunters." Heirs might eventually have the tools to extrapolate enough information from an old hard drive to recover a deleted wallet.dat.

Bitcoins sent to black hole addresses are probably gone for good, however.
