381  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Devtome.com writers - your content WILL be used in ways you do no like on: June 24, 2013, 12:51:06 PM
here's a related example ...

Thanks. I don't completely follow all that but I think we're generally agreeing? Payment is made in devcoins and beautifying/monetising content is precicely the plan as far as I understand. On your points about style, tools, monetisation - they're all good points and I don't disagree. It's not my area or focus as such but I see it as a work in progress. It's early days and there are around 500k hits per month and about 100 people writing. To me that seems to offer opportunity to build from, and constructive criticism is exactly what is needed.

Speaking for myself here, but another significant benefit of devtome (and devcoin generally) is in getting information and the opportunities of cryptocurrencies out to people who would otherwise not hear about them or have no interest even if they did. That is the 99% of the world not on this forum or with specific tech interests. The particular pros/cons of devtome are debateable, as is the balancing act between word reward and other developments in software, hardware etc (and fairly so) but for broad take up and adoption, for word of mouth to spread, and for success outside a niche such developments need to appeal to other walks of life. It's not perfect, but devtome is one of the efforts on that path that could pay mutually rewarding and significant dividends and for devcoin, and with it bitcoin, litecoin and others.

Yes we are all in general agreement here.

But I think (as evinced in the OP here) that there are a lot of people (possibly the majority) of people involved with the project who don't have that level headed perspective or understanding of the factors involved.

hotcoldcoin's warning is vague and emotional and looks like FUD.  I'm surprised by the following banter that indicates he is (or was) a devcoin supporter.

It doesn't help that while having a tumultuous conversation about Fin Shaggy here comes another devcoin thread expounding on what I feel is one of the absolute worst facets of "The FOSS Community".

People who apply restrictive licenses to "keep their code 'free'" offend me dearly. There is no altruism there.

If you're going to be angry when someone else gets paid to republish your work in a better, friendlier, or more usable format - or use it as the basis of some other product which has the added value of their work to make it so - devtome isn't the place for you.

And for those people who heard what weisoq is saying before but didn't understand that it translates to exactly that hotcoldcoin is saying (that's right all three of us are making the same actual point) perhaps my post will help bridge the gap to understanding about how you get from weisoq's version to hotcoldcoin's.

If someone were scared with what hotcoldcoin posted, or offended with what I posted, yet thought that they agreed with what weisoq posted, they need to analyze what they are doing Smiley

Hmmm, the sun's coming up and I haven't slept.  Not sure if that made things any clearer  Huh

382  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Devcoin Testimonies on: June 24, 2013, 12:11:04 PM

We first started noticing a slump in price on May 30th - see here on the old thread. That's when the price went from about 145 satoshis to about 105 satoshis. Most likely miners selling - though in this post Vlad thought it was down to the bitcoin price dropping from $130 to $118 - also a likely cause.  Since then the bitcoin price has fallen to $100 and devcoin has tracked it down. I doubt that is due to FinShaggy!

Fair enough. Do you think he's helping?

Well I think he's an offbeat character who sometimes just gets carried away with his enthusiasm  Grin  I don't think there's any harm in him - I think he's promoting madly because he really believes Devcoin saved his life and can save others too. Unthinkingbit bit made him promoter after he'd done loads of threads singing the virtues of Devcoin!

My view is that we're not a business, we're a community and good communities tolerate off-beat characters. It's perfectly true that the other alt coins are more professional, and well, sales-aware - but that's because they really are about pump and dump and not being a pro hurts that, so they mind what they say. I like to think Devcoin is a little different and less cookie-cutter...

Regarding the price - obviously it's disappointing - but we just need to sit it out and wait for bitcoin's price to rise (which will pull the main alt coins up too). IMO nothing will happen till September/October - that's the traditional season for WallStreet to meltdown, and this year we have the added fun of Cyprus ending it's capital controls in Sept too - all designed to create renewed interest in bitcoins and cryptocurrencies in general.

Actually I'm still shaking my head over that.

You switched to giving some prices in USD.  But devcoin isn't traded against USD in most markets and in fact has fallen in proportion to BitCoin, while Bitcoin has fallen vs USD.

According to your numbers it was worth approximately $.0001885 USD/DVC (.00000145 * $130 Bitcoin) and moved to $.000105 USD (.00000105 * $100 BitCoin).

This means that while bitcoin has dropped something like 25% Devcoin has pushed down nearly 50% (relative to USD). And frankly devcoin has not been trading near that 105 number for the last week, trades have been happening as low as .00000040 with most volume between .0000075 and .00000095 on the exchanges I'm watching.

That is not "Tracking it down".

Regarding Fin Shaggy, we can agree to disagree.  I feel that his antics have crossed the borderline form silly to destructive some time ago and he should be removed. Others may obviously disagree.  My OP in this thread was an address to him directly and I stand by my opinion.

EDIT: sorry if the flash edits are confusing, sooo much formatting with the quotes Wink

The price crashed way before Round 23 started paying out (which I think was FinShaggy's first payment), so it wasn't him (go back to the old thread to see when the drop happened - from memory it was late-May and the consensus was that a whole bunch of new merge miners were selling.

Depends on which "crash" you mean. The fluctuations that I was accustomed to seeing in devcoin price have settled way down and trading moved from .0000015 - .0000013 and settled in comfortable at <.0000008 - .000001 since the last week or so. It seems incredibly obcvious that there was a dump when the shares paid out, and there's just now starting to be some signs of recovery - in time for Fin Shaggy to get paid again.

Was he solely responsible for this?  I doubt it.  But how many people do you think just paid their rent out of the devcoin market cap?

This is a re-stabilization (in short terms but regarding comparable time frames) of the market down what, 30 - 40%?

Was he solely responsible for this?  I doubt it.  But how many people do you think just paid their rent out of the devcoin market cap?

And how close is Fin Shaggy's next payment?

And if you think about it for a moment, he's just admitted he's financially dependant on the price being stable, so why would he crash the price?

Actually, it seems to me that he just flaunted how little he actually knows about trading or markets.  And that he dumped heavily into a weak market, at a bad time becuase he had so many devcoins it was worth it to him.

And also the fact that he's getting so many devcoins that he could PAY HIS RENT in a sorely depressed market and still have money for toys.

Speaking metaphorically yes, I think he's ignorant enough to kill a chicken that would lay eggs for years so that he could have chicken and dumplings for dinner.

He's going to correct the market with his next payment?  Do you not see the irony in that statement - the obvious implication that he's either lying or completely living in a fantasy?

His hot words are simply the result of being constantly stalked and bashed and accused of pumping and dumping. Yes, very childish to respond with a "right I'll dump coins then" - but he's been goaded to that point.

I get that some don't like FinShaggy - but why don't you use the ignore button? Why the constant stalking and cyber-bullying? Haven't you got anything better to do?

In my analysis, that's backwards. His being constantly stalked and bashed is the direct result of his words and his ridiculous antics.

For the record today is the first time that I've spoken out either to or about Fin Shaggy. And despite some of what has gone on in this thread I think you'll find my points clear and legitimate, not trolling or "Cyber-bullying".  And the reason it's happening now is two-fold:

His antics the other day when he got "back on the job" really sorely offended me and pissed me off.  When he shit all over the thread requesting ideas I was surprised that he was even being still tolerated at all.

Then, yesterday (well 2 days now) I found out that he is not just some random idiot spouting off all of the time, that he is actually compensated for this behavior.

That that while he's supposed to be getting paid to help advance the cause of the devcoin community, he is in fact alienating most of that community with a RAH RAH BULLSHIT cheerleading pump of devcoins to people who don't understand so that he can pay his rent off of them.

That's Just Awful.
385  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Devtome.com writers - your content WILL be used in ways you do no like on: June 24, 2013, 10:31:35 AM

Be interested to hear your points and examples.

here's a related example:

http://fairytalesandfolklore.com/

I own that site and it's clearly not monetized, however it's seeing a couple thousand hits a month and google wants me to put ads on it. It's sat idle for so long, it was originally developed using google friend-connect in like, 2008 or something.

You can bet I didn't generate any of that content it was all public domain (gutenberg) stuff.  But it doesn't matter because gutenberg is unpleasant to use.  Take it out and chop it into the pretty bits and present it in a searchable, accessible, easy to read format is work, and it's a service that a couple thousand people per month are appreciating.

I can tell you right now it would be trivial to make a better, nicer, more useful site than devtome - which seems so incredibly hard to manage because it's in a completely wrong tool.  It actually pains me to say this (I hate wordpress) but moving from a "wiki" format to ANYTHING With categories and some sorting would be a tremendous improvement. This is the first time in my entire life I've recommended wordpress for something besides a blog.

A nice re-skin of devtome would probably generate enough pageviews to put ads on it. Dumping/ignoring a good part of it would help. getting it out of that wikidiculous format and into some proper order would be the icing on the cake.

And any SEO will tell you that a properly organized, sorted and categorized site with google ads on it would be so much more attractive to both bots and people that soon it would be QUITE PROBABLE for google to start sending people to this commercial site, instead of into the hole of devtome.

And people would appreciate it because while search may be leading people to devtome right now, it's my guess that most of them leave in a hurry when they realize it looks like a giant spam honeypot.

And then all of the people that were happy to "share with the community" will suddenly turn into greedy monsters crying about how their work was STOLEN and it's not FAIR. Even though they were happy to sell it into the public domain it for a few devcoins because they didn't know how to make use of it. Hypocrites.

There's part of the problem,  You don't get to take payment, and then get self righteous about your "sharing" and "Control of your art". You sold it. Not gifted, or contributed, or shared it, you sold it. As weisoq notes it's practically shoved in people's face as they sign away their rights.

But that won't stop the green-eyed monster from coming out now will it?

Maybe I'll do this tomorrow. What the hell.  According to unthinking bit devtome itself has plenty of pageviews now.  But it's not monetized because he/she "doesn't like U.S. politics" and apparently no one working with devtome can find a non-U.S. advertiser?

There is some basic wrongness here.

This is an interesting alternative idea. I wasn't even thinking about it but this is just off the charts.

Personal proof, indeed.  I'm sorry to sound derisive as I see that there are some nice people hoping to achieve good things by throwing their weight behind the devcoin foundation.  But really it's a mess. And I suspect that considering the sort of recruiting being done right now there will be a lot of doe-eyed innocent who really didn't think of "taking devcoin for their work" as "selling their work" and are legitimately shocked by this.

Why are you worried about what some "mysterious commercial entity" might do anyways. You're all "contributing" to pay Fin Shaggy's rent and support his hilarious crusade while devtome rots and collapses under it's own weight and lack of even basic management.

A couple of weeks ago I was thinking to get involved with some of the devcoin stuff, the basic ideas behind it sound great. But the community surrounding it is pretty screwed up right now. The more I watch and research the less I want to get involved.

But not because someone might "steal" my work that I got paid to put into the public domain.

386  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Confirmation: PowerCoin was 51% attacked on: June 24, 2013, 09:47:42 AM
Why Can't We Just Start Using This Coin Again?

- Because there is a holder of this coin who can dump these at any time and any price for him would be profit.   Therefore, this coin no longer has real work value.

This is why the coin cannot be revived as it is an upward battle - as stated. It has nothing to do with not wanting to try anymore, this individual will just keep dumping and profiting on other people's money. I would rather let the coin die than this to happen.

Thanks for dropping in BigVern and helping to clarify.

How much coin are we talking here?  strictly a matter of curiosity at this point. It sounds like it must be a significant percent of the coinbase.
387  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Devcoin Testimonies on: June 24, 2013, 09:37:18 AM
Devcoin was not really a "thriving economy".  It's quite possible that someone dumping enough devcoin into the market to pay a month's rent, buy several pieces of brand new electronics, and take a little trip would cause the current market condition.

Not to mention how wonderful I'm sure it makes everyone feel to know that we just paid Fin Shaggy's rent in exchange for his "services to the community".  Services that we have all appreciated, so much.

I'd like to know how he plans on "correcting" the devcoin market - WITH MORE DEVCOINS!!

His investing knowledge, I see, is something that is beyond the rest of our ability to perceive as well.

Seriously.  Roll Eyes

A little bump for the night shift.

Also we have moved the format to weekly drawings and added FTC.

Any more feedback or lotto players around here?

Sure it's on Fin Shaggy's list of "great ideas".

Except, to be fair, he would see some of it go back to the foundation. others won't.

I already noted that someone said they published a book they wrote and owned copyright to on devtome.  I wonder if he realizes it's now essentially public domain.

This will never matter for most of the stuff that's currently on devtome though, and they DID get paid to put it there.

interesting i hate to ask but do you have personal proof of this as it is disturbing to say the least..
thanks for the heads up
noel

Personal proof of what?  The license is public.

I have re-done you some css www.cryptosextoys.com/csses.zip they will hopefully be slightly more enticing.  They are extremely basic tho.

I would suggest you take on feathercoin and go announce in their forums, they are active and want new sites to take them, you will have a very warm reception and maybe some design help. Do the same with DGC and WDC and their forums.

I find this hilarious, and entirely acceptable.  The site is running your CSS for now but I'll probably go straighten out the blocks on the howto page since there's no clouds.

Part of the reason I find it hilarious is that it's much more like my usual CSS.  Plain as hell with high-contrast blocks.

Fin Shaggy.

You are EXACTLY the opposite if what most of us want devcoin to stand for.

There is NO ACTUAL DEVELOPER interested in your bullshit rhetoric, crazy conman antics, or YouTube marketing.

You provide nothing but noise.

I mean it's seriously enough that I've come to be angered by you for no rational reason.

You may succeed in a massive pump on devcoin, but you and your ilk will kill the (stated) "spirit" of the thing as surely as cyanide.

You guys are all just butt hurt.

Devcoin has changed my life.

I now have a webcam, xbox, video games and means to pay rent. My job is on YouTube, so these things have drastically changed my life.

I have tripled my YouTube video making capability
I have gotten far more writing done than I ever did before

And it's all thanks to Devtome.
If anyone is giving devcoin bad press, it's you guys.

I have gotten about half of my devcoin devtome payout, I plan on using the other half on correcting the market, instead of bitching and moaning about the market and pointing blame like you guys.

Wait, so it's YOU behind the giant dump that has recently crashed devcoin prices?
Enjoy your x-box and your web cam.  I think I just heard a market lose all support.

EDIT lol i can't post fast enough I keepe getting warned about the people come here to beg you to shut the hell up and go away.
394  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Do you like lotteries? on: June 24, 2013, 12:48:41 AM
So, I've been working with MobGod to get some lotteries up.

It's only a couple of new coins at the moment and there's room to add more. There are a lot of crypto-lotteries around doing different things and I'd like to find out what people actually like.

At this time we've got them set up to draw every 6 hours - but it's too fast, I think.  There needs to be more time for a pool to build. But how long should that be?  I want your input.  Three days?  Weekly?  24 Hours?

Ticket prices - eventually, for coins with large, interested player-base I would consider adding multiple drawings (different ticket prices) per coin. However for now I have each coin set to one per ticket, and you can buy as many tickets as you like.

Raising the ticket price would make the numbers seem more "balanced" when someone plays a large amount, however the person who bought one ticket could still win even if someone else buys 1000. I think this gives the most flexibility - any reason to prefer a higher initial ticket price?

Of course with room to add a few more coins here, I definitely want to know which coins have a significant number of users who like to play lotteries. Speak up if you would like us to add a coin, please.

Right now the fee is set to 10% plus the minimum fee amount for a single transaction. This seems market-appropriate.  It does in fact cost money to do this so there's no need to go on about how everything should be free. But if moving it to 6-8% would massively increase interest we may consider it.

I think it would help not to have to show ads on the lotto site. Would you rather have ads in order to get another 2-4% in the jackpot?

Last, the site design.  I'm a programmer not a designer.  I'm still going to turn a couple of those buttons into images I think and that will help with the layout in certain browsers.  I've had strongly mixed reactions ("from OMG that's awesome!" to "it's fucking ugly") on the current background/layout. Your thoughts and constructive criticism are welcome, and trolls will be trolls so let's hear it about that too. Would a solid or more subdued background make the site more comfortable for you?

I think that good answers to these issues will not only help us to move forward but, being public, help other lottery owners to better target their games as well. So if you have some thoughts and would like to see the available lotteries improve, please share them Smiley

395  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Solution to new coin flood on: June 23, 2013, 11:35:37 PM
Ok so every1 is complaining about new coins, put your hasher where your mouth is, simply set up a pool, have miners point to it, and by some sort of vote, decide which of the crapcoins to 51% attack, it would kill them before they start and crapcoin makers wouldnt release them if they know they wll be 51% attacked

Wow.

Why don't you put your hasher where your mouth is, get in a pool and secure the network for a cryptocoin that you believe is properly managed and will be developed?

But here you are with the 51% attack bogeyman, so I wonder, what the hell do you mean by that?

Do you believe that the coin will simply vanish when your pool achieves 51%?

Tell the devs, miners and traders here more about your plan to become (wealthy? famous? popular?) by screwing us...

From a technical point of view, the only coin that isn't either BTC's SHA256 nor LTC's scrypt.

You posted this while I was posting, and I came to say nearly the same thing.

I think emunie might be a real sleeper with a deceptively silly name.

It's not satoshi-daemon based at all, it works very differently and while I haven't had the time to get very involved there are a lot of people looking to get behind something that isn't another pump'n'dump bit-clone.

ok, the block explorer is live again, but it's using the "text:" trick to catch TX messages.

I'll move it over to the getrawtransaction method after we've had a chance to recompile the lotto daemon.

block explorer broken now?

It appears to have lost connection.  I'll be checking it out within the next few minutes.

Thanks for the heads up.

I don't have direct access to the daemon for it, but if I need to I'll point it at another one temporarily.
