41  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: SAPPHIRE Solutions will Support C32/Cuckatoo 32 on: March 07, 2019, 05:05:18 PM
That's not accurate.  My VII does 4.59 at 160 watts on Grin29.  Sounds to me to be more efficient.

I think your post is the not accurate one. He said it was ONE of the most efficient chips, not THE most efficient. He was speaking from an affordability standpoint.

Buying a Radeon VII for mining is incredibly stupid for a number of reasons...the primary one being the cost. Buying one at all really isnt a great idea since NVIDIA cards are better in almost all gaming aspects as well.

P.S. My 2 year old ALREADY paid for GTX 1070s run about 4.1-4.2gps @ 150w without being $700 in the hole per card.....
42  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Home miner business code / type on: March 07, 2019, 04:58:19 PM
There is no BUSINESS code for HOME mining because it is a hobby unless you have it registered as a company already.
43  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: THE TRUTH on: March 07, 2019, 04:57:12 PM
PROGPOW to the rescue.

Mining IS about decentralization.

Centralized ASIC mining is a RISK.

Higher hashrate alone/in one hand ISN'T more secure.

If mining gets centralized than CRYPTOCURRENCIES have failed !!!

progpow is no magical savior, it will be cracked just like any other asic resistant algos.

ASICs do not equal centralization, please stop parroting incorrect information from the other ignorant people on this site.

Big farms buy up GPU rigs just like they do ASICs, yet dumbass people dont seem to understand how this works at a commercial level.

Educate yourself.
44  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: S9 issue, it will not hast on: March 06, 2019, 10:14:12 PM
If you fan speed is at 720 RPM it means that fan is dead and only being turned by the pressure of the other intake fan
45  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Do Bitcoin miners care about renewable energy? on: March 06, 2019, 05:51:39 PM
I would be fine with a complete ban on dirty energy sources powering commercial mining projects. Even our company is lumped in with the guys using coal here, even though we have nothing to do with it. Apparently just being in the same industry makes us the bad guys to the ignorant people that run the local governments out here. I have managed 5 hydro powered datacenters at this point myself and see no reason why anyone should be using coal to power their miners.

Not to bring politics into this but thank the stars Trumps push for coal died so quickly, we need to get away from it as soon as possible.
46  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: How do you run miners on 440 V/3 Phase ? on: March 05, 2019, 08:58:32 PM
You would need a step down transformer to make that happen. there are no PSUs that will work for what you want.
47  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Do Bitcoin miners care about renewable energy? on: March 05, 2019, 05:13:51 PM
It's nice when you are around it and it's plentiful. Just wondering you don't have a less expensive option available do you?

We purchase our power on the open market, we can buy it from whoever we want. We are not contracted to some power company as most power companies buy and resell power themselves and do not produce the majority of what they sell.

Again, there is no dirty energy that is cheaper to produce then the proper renewable energies.

Geothermal/hydro - build facility and run it

coal - build facility, secure a mine, mine the coal, transport the coal, process the coal, use the coal

It simply costs more to make dirty energy. There is another large mining operation in Montana that does use coal power. They pay significantly more than we do for power and there are new environmental laws that might be shutting those coal setups down permanently in the next few years and that will end their business.
48  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Do Bitcoin miners care about renewable energy? on: March 05, 2019, 04:25:54 PM
Well for one, coal cant get that cheap without some special government subsidies. It simply costs too much to mine and transport to be that cheap.

That being said, my company only buys renewable hydro energy, and would never mess with dirty coal. There is enough environmental damage to the earth without us adding to it.
49  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: CUDA error 11-cannot write buffer for DAG on: March 04, 2019, 05:12:16 PM
How are there 8 pages of responses to a thread with a such an obvious answer.

Run linux and you dont have these problems. People only run windows because they are too lazy to learn something new.

Be less lazy.

Make more profits.
50  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: config ubuntu 16.04 with 12 gpu ati rx on: March 04, 2019, 05:01:49 PM
There are a number of threads about this specific motherboard here on the forum. I would do a little searching and you should be able to figure it out pretty easily.

best of luck!
51  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Review: Bitmain Antminer S15-28TH/s on: March 04, 2019, 04:35:47 PM
Only wattage is specified because by themselves the Amps pulled or voltage in are meaningless. Only the 2 together giving you wattage matters.
A miner ran with a high line voltage will pull less amps than a miner ran on a lower voltage line.

Line voltage is variable no matter where you are, it even changes based on load so there is no reliable way to give a specific amperage rating.

e.g.

1500w @ 208v = 7.2a
1500w @ 240v = 6.3a
52  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: how many S11,S15,T15 did bitmain actually manage to sell? on: March 04, 2019, 04:30:26 PM
Lightning will make even wires obsolete even with the low bandwidth at it's current state. The biggest manufacturers we source with are already beginning to pivot.

We prefer to only sell coins when it maximizes our profits, using them to buy equipment (other than dumping some useless BCH) just doesnt jive with our methods.

Plus in my personal opinion the lightning network is pure trash, and I cant support that shitty band-aid they tried to put over the top of bitcoin instead of fixing its actual scaling problems.
53  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: how many S11,S15,T15 did bitmain actually manage to sell? on: February 27, 2019, 04:43:46 PM
A lot of bulk buyers use wire transfers for business and not crypto to buy direct so trying to extrapolate from crypto addresses really isnt the way to go either.

There just isnt enough information out there to make a guess that is anywhere even close to accurate.
54  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Bitmain Antminer S9 Control Board Cyclone V2.4 and C5_IO_Board_V1.3 (Problem) on: February 27, 2019, 12:29:33 AM
OP btw if you chose to buy the control board, i suggest you look for a broken/cheap T9 or R4 . those use the same control board as all S9 models, many people don't know that , so you could possibly find a dirt cheap r4 or t9 with a working control board.

you can also get it new on bitmain website for 60$ or on ebay for about 50$ but i still prefer the above suggestion.

While this is good advice I would like to point out that the T9+ controller is different.

Many people refer to the T9 and the T9+ as the same thing when in reality they were very different miners.

T9 control board will work, T9+ will not
55  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Two s9js with different noises on: February 27, 2019, 12:28:01 AM
If you have an s9 you think is 'quiet' you somehow managed to get a unicorn. The noisier machine is more in line with a normal s9.

They are industrial equipment, they are not meant to run in a quiet mode, and you should not expect them to. They were designed for industrial environments where sound levels are basically meaningless
56  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: how many S11,S15,T15 did bitmain actually manage to sell? on: February 27, 2019, 12:24:02 AM
I think that rumors and reports of bitmains demise continue unabated because people so badly WANT them to fail.

Honestly 40k coupons isnt really a good sample size. Just here at my datacenter we received over 15k coupons in total....

While it is obvious that this generation miner did not sell as well, there are plenty of reasons why it did not.

Your numbers make such massive assmuptions I just dont see the data as being particularly useful since you are extrapolating on such a small sample size.

If we wanted to do generic math....my 20MW DC received 15k coupons, so 40k coupons would only represent less then 44 megawatts of processing power in total which doesnt even begin to scratch the surface of what is out there.
57  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: antminer s9 fan direction is wrong? on: February 26, 2019, 04:19:49 PM
I haven't had the issue with my miners, but one of my clients couldn't simply flip the fan , because the other side of the intake fan was not flat enough to fit the the grill , so i had to send him a spare fan.

Im wondering if that fan already had bad bearings because I have had probably 25k bitmain devices pass through my hands and never had a fan that hit like that that also didnt have another issue
58  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Decentralized Power Plants on: February 25, 2019, 10:44:25 PM
1. This just seems like another pipe dream ICO selling garbage tokens that wont ever be worth anything. (it makes it that much funnier that you quote gigawatts failures, as they failed after having an ICO like you are trying). Sorry if you dont like it but the facts are ICOs are a scam and they just dont work. We have years of data to prove this now.

2. I think you might be missing a fundamental understanding of how this industry works.  No one in their right mind would give you money on the promise of a power station when you wont even have a prototype operational for another 5 years. This industry moves WAY TOO FAST for something like this to have any value. In 5 years the whole landscape could change rendering this obsolete.

3. 4 cent power is easily obtainable in bulk if you understand the US energy market. There really isnt much value to your proposition when the result is already available.

4. The reason mines center around places like the pacific northwest is because that is where the renewable energy already is. I run a 20mw facility powered fully by hydroelectric power. People in industrial nations outside of China are VERY RARELY running on fossil fuels, so touting this as a cleaner alternative when the vast majority is already powered by renewable sources doesnt really give you many advantages.

5. 2.5 million per megawatt to install instantly makes this a no go for miners. With the depressed market prices, people are in survival mode. Nobody is going to spend millions and wait 5 years as most will be out of business by then.
59  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain will be releasing S15 and T15 on 8/11/2018 on: February 25, 2019, 06:39:19 PM
Here is my breakdown of coupons:

The 5392 represents the number of S9s we purchased.

5392x$340
5392x$250
5392x$160
5392x$65

The 2 represents the 2 T15s I purchased for testing.

2x$395
2x$300
2x$195
2x$100

This should give some idea about how they were distributing the coupons.

I'm saying it's the larger scale guys with no prior personal experience who tend to overestimate profitability. You saw GW overestimated build costs and delays... that's all part of profitability. You estimated that better probably because you started on the other side.

I am lucky to have the experience both with a failed and a successful crypto mining company which I think uniquely qualifies me when speaking on such matters. From a business perspective the build cost, operational costs, and profitability of what is running are all different things and I would personally not lump them together like that. I could write an essay detailing the mistakes made by a company like gigawatt and break it down close to the individual decision points that ruined them but I dont think it is really necessary.

The single biggest mistake you can make in this industry is forecasting and using profitability models. In order to be successful in this space, you need to be operationally lean, you need to learn to ignore the price of bitcoin (as counter intuitive as it seems), and you need to plan everything you do like you have no money and are barely going to make it.
