currently of the worst coins of the polo. total deception

What's the deception?

That activity mining pretends to be real.

So your belief is that proof-of-stake is not "real" mining?

Activity mining refers to people making one-line vaguely-on-topic (just enough so that they don't get deleted) comments on the forum so their activity and rank increases and they can sell their account for a higher price. The people/bots doing this aren't really paying attention, so they usually don't participate in the conversation or answer questions. It is usually best to just ignore them although reporting to the forum mods is an option (they are overworked and have to prioritize more serious abuse so this often doesn't accomplish anything). The practice is rampant and has been going on for years.

(previous comment above this one also)

@NeuroticFish

0% maker fee isn't really a big deal, and not uncommon. It just means that the other side of the trade is paying more of the total fee on the trade. What matters (with respect to wash trading) is whether the sum of both sides is zero. I have no idea whether that exists on Bitthumb but the screen shot doesn't show it.
405  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: November 13, 2017, 02:54:57 AM
By the way, what is a sure way to identify blockchain corruption? Is there a command to make the daemon recheck all the blocks?

When your node gets forked off the network. Since the entire network is synchronized and massively replicated, there is enormous redundancy and inherent error checking.

There is no real need to introduce additional redundancy or error checking at the node layer, although for a high availability service you might want to run multiple nodes and introduce some middleware to ensure they are in sync.

407  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Unveiling the truth over the major Monero scam on: November 12, 2017, 12:48:12 AM
This entire thread is a circlejerk of both Bytecoin fanboys and Monero fanboys and I'm disappointed in all of you.

Except that there never were many real Bytecoin fanboys. It was mostly paid shilling/trolling, which is why most of those accounts including OP are now inactive (contract expired).

I'm also curious why Bittrex wasn't chosen as its volume is now much larger than polo's

Only historical reasons. I use some custom code to analyze market data that doesn't support bittrex yet. I will likely add support for bittrex and the assets that trade there in coming months.
410  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: November 07, 2017, 09:43:20 PM
@smooth: I'm not questioning the possibility as much as I'm questioning the reasoning/motive during that time. There wasn't exactly a huge amount of confidence during the 25 cent era. And even if a moderately high net worth individual wanted to acquire 700k XMR during that time, he would not have gotten them all at 25 cents. I assume he would've cleared the order book before even getting his first 100k coins.

I'm not so sure about that. Remember 9 million coins were mined (and likely a large fraction of that dumped onto the market) over the first 18 months. Someone wanting to accumulate not even 10% of that could probably do so at a good steady rate without ever clearing the book (in fact possibly without ever making a market order).

Anyway, it doesn't really matter.
411  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: November 07, 2017, 08:46:35 PM
do we have any speculation on how many coins the biggest fish in the monero sea holds?

100k? 300k? do we think anyone out there has a million xmr?

disclaimer: i know it's more than me.

700k was the highest I know of--though those were lost at sea in a hack.

I've never heard of anyone having 700k. I'd guess the largest (individual) holder has under 500k XMR. Probably even less.

Remember at one point XMR was under 25 cents. 700k would not have been a particularly large position for even a moderately high net worth individual.
412  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Fantasy crypto portfolio on: November 07, 2017, 08:44:48 PM
Do you have 100k USD invested in all of them that you have shown?

No, that's why it is called a fantasy portfolio.

I do own some of them but my actual holdings are not allocated according to this portfolio. This thread is paper trading
413  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Steem pyramid scheme revealed on: November 07, 2017, 01:34:03 AM
80% of steem owned by the creators? did someone verify that? this would really be the end for that coin...

Nothing to verify, they admitted it. There is dilution and dumping to fund expenses by the team so it is probably a lot lower than that now, although realistically most claims about distribution (on all coins that make such claims) are nonsense since you can't tell who actually owns or controls which accounts/addresses.

The discussion of forum mods is off topic. If you have objections to their work, take it to Meta please (where they are also more likely to see it)

It's not random.
416  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Fantasy crypto portfolio on: November 06, 2017, 03:19:59 AM
I'm just curious why you dont hold some ETH based on its large market cap and liquidity. Also, is that too risk for 44% XRP?

As I noted above all coins have been quite correlated with each other meaning it doesn't make as much difference as you might think which coins you hold. The more important decision is how much to hold in cryptocurrency assets as a whole. At this time the holistic factors going into the portfolio construction don't favor ETH (in that the expectation, which could turn out to be right or wrong, is that if ETH were to move up strongly, other coins would too).

XRP is a bit of an outlier. Unlike most of the others which are at least somewhat grass roots projects that derive, vaguely from Satoshi's tradition of working to build an alternative to traditional finance (though some with ICO, etc. fundraising and a formalize development organization, some not), XRP is issued by a company that holds a large portion of its supply and that company is backed by serious venture capital and has experience professional management. Its strategy and target market, at least short term, is making partnerships and deals with existing banks and similar regulated businesses. In short, it is a completely different animal from most other coins when it comes to economics. Diversification within that category might make sense if there were other candidates, but there mostly aren't. (Stellar Lumens is arguably in a similar strategic position and indeed we have 10 STR in the portfolio, so we might say that "potentially-disruptive cryptocurrencies" make up 46% and "bank coins" make up 54% of which 81% is XRP and 19% is STR.)

@guystyles ETC is only included at 1% which might as well be rounding error. I don't think it is worth paying much attention to at this point, but maybe in the future the allocation will move higher. We'll see.
417  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Fantasy crypto portfolio on: November 05, 2017, 11:32:18 PM
A portfolio consisting of new popular ico coins would be great idea. I suggest you to add privacy coins, I think they are very risk free coins, only way is up for long term.

To be clear this is neither an ICO portfolio nor a non-ICO portfolio. Some of the coins in the screening universe are ICO such as ETH/ETC and STRAT (I think) and probably some others.

The primary criteria here are high market cap and liquidity. This is needed to be able to adjust the holdings periodically without it being impractical/expensive to actually make those trades.

ZEC and DASH (both considered privacy coins) are included, though currently low weight. XMR is included in the universe but currently has zero weight.
418  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Fantasy crypto portfolio on: November 05, 2017, 09:23:09 AM
Woah this is very good job. I wanna know what results it will produce. I would love to suggest you to add Monero, Waves, IOTA and Stellar Lumens to this list. I love these 3 coins.

Monero is considered as part of the universe, but happens to have 0 allocation right now. Stellar Lumens is included with 10% allocation. My Poloniex-based workflow uses the old STR symbol.

IOTA and WAVES are not for technical reasons because my analysis process currently requires Poloniex listing, but that requirement may be removed later.

in my opinion not very balanced, due to the fact that you invest ~44% in XRP.
Why do not you diversify more?

There is a relatively high correlation between most coins which means diversification between coins is of relatively little importance. Of course there is always some value in it, and generally speaking diversification and balance are important. I definitely favor diversification between crytpo assets and non-crypto assets, where the correlations are lower. In particular, even if you are the biggest crypto bull ever, you should still have some non-crypto investments for balance IMO.

I'm currently investing zero actual funds according to this allocation, but I'm going to track its performance here for a while. I will probably update the allocation targets monthly. The goal is to maximize performance and minimize risk when measured in USD terms.

The intent is to limit the universe to reasonably liquid coins (approximately top 20 by market cap) which can handle entry and exit of significant size positions. (For technical reasons it is currently limited to coins trading on Poloniex, though that restriction may be removed.)

If you find it interesting or want to follow along on paper or with real funds (this not a recommendation; do your own research and invest at your own risk), then welcome to the thread.
