421  Economy / Speculation / Re: Difficulty increase, 25% fewer coins being mined in a few hours on: June 18, 2013, 12:55:00 PM

Thus, it is no surprise that ASIC vendors are having a hard time delivering their products: economically, it simply makes more sense to mine NOW rather than 3 months from now. There's basically time decay at work: powerful ASIC hardware will suffer serious theta-decay once it is widely used.

Difficulty is already increasing at ~30% currently, so things will become even more dramatic during the next months, which is why it makes sense to run ASICs now, rather than sell them.

.

You're right that running ASICS now will be more profitable. The problem is, there are few ASICS that you can get your hands on if you decided to go the ASIC route today. You can't get them tomorrow, if you decided to order one today (with the possible exception of block erupters and blades on Ebay, for a princely sum of money).

I can tell you that just because difficulty is rising, it simply doesn't matter.  I just added +30% hashing power. That decision was made a while back.

Looking at the pool I mine at, a bunch more 68-70 gh/s  contributors popped up, so the total hash power went up probably by 30% just in the last week.

The fact that difficulty is rising and hashing power is going up is based on orders/decisions that were made 3 or more months ago. Those results are just coming in now.

So, extending that train of thought, the decisions that are being made now will affect hashing power 3 or more months from now. The ASIC bandwagon is just getting here. It will be a while before it's all sorted out.

I don't see any evidence that hashing power will continue to slow down. In fact, it's going to increase probably at a constant rate of 20-30% for the next 3-6 months. At some point, probably around the holidays, people will step back and evaluate things. But for now, its going to the moon.

People who are getting ASICS now are ahead of the curve, due to proper planning, funding, and foresight. Kudos to them.
422  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Block Erupter USB owners won't make ROI??? on: June 18, 2013, 08:48:13 AM
I'm liking my block erupter that I just got. It's cute, and according to my calculations, it will come close to paying itself off in a year.

The return on investment can be calculated in different ways, not necessarily on just pure BTC generated.

For example, I got mine because I was looking for a way to bump up the hash speed without generating TONS more heat in my office. Compared to adding a graphics card, it does not put out much heat at all, thus saving me money on cooling costs.

Also, I wanted to test the ASIC concept, see how hard it is to get going, learn something in the process, AND bump up my hashrate IMMEDIATELY (added 30%), so that I can generate more bitcoins to buy more ASICS down the road (generating BTC to pay for assembly costs, etc)....

I don't really want to add graphics cards now, with their associated heat, but I did want to bump up the hash rate.

Block Erupter is available NOW, immediately, to help me accomplish the goals that I set out to accomplish.

If you look at it from that point of view, it is well worth the money, right NOW. A month from now, it will not be, according to my calculations.

423  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: How to use ASICMiner Block Erupters with CGMiner on Windows 7 on: June 17, 2013, 10:38:45 PM
Hey guys, thanks a bunch !!

Much props for the instructions. Got it running after a little fiddling.

 Grin Grin

Update.

3.2.0 does not work, neither does 3.2.2. Same exact bat file instructions.

3.1.1 works even on high speed blue USB 3.0 ports (tried on a different computer), or regular 2.0 ports.

More updates as I screw with this stuff some more. It does get hot. I just have it sitting on a single usb extension cable lying sideways on the top fan exhaust. Seems to work quite well.

Would probably be a good idea.
425  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Google Spreadsheet with some 2013/2014 difficulty estimates on: June 17, 2013, 06:29:55 AM
Interesting spreadsheet.

A couple of interesting points are that difficulty, network hash rate, AND price actually went down in March-April of 2012, and also in October of 2011.

While it is difficult to do statistics on something like that, one could assume because of the size of the network that a lot of people made some calculation that it was not profitable for them to mine, so they stopped, then at some point started back up again.

This is supported by the subsequent spike in difficulty in the months immediately following those months.

The same thing happened in December of 2012, there was an actual decrease in difficulty, followed by consistent increases in difficulty.

Thus, we can conclude that we will probably see huge jumps in difficulty (over 20%) per every 10 days over the next months.

Pretty interesting stuff.
426  Economy / Economics / Re: Japan bail-in on: June 17, 2013, 03:55:01 AM
The radiation addled brain of Mrs. Watanabe will not mind if she gets fucked again, and again, and again.

After all, her husband is a workaholic who can't get it up. (Mrs. Watanabe is the generic name for the bond owning, conservative Japanese housewife who runs the house and probably the finances, while the husband works).

You are right, Japan is going to do whatever it takes to keep those banks solvent. However, the problem is that each bank is part of a network of keiretsu, vertically integrated set of companies with interlocked business relationships, shareholdings, and shareholders.

However, in this particular case, the keiretsu's have been holding up the Japanese economy for a long time, and will also cause it to come crashing down, because in Japan everything is inter-related, more so than in Europe and the US.

The fireworks show should be quite fascinating to watch.

That is cool.

Nice one.

You know, I'm not opposed to people making money. I really have no problem with that.

But when you become no better than Butterfly Lab, and put pre-ordered, pre-manufactured, untested stuff on Ebay, that's when I have to call COMPLETE BULLSHIT !

Have a nice day. Oh, and don't even try the "It's not me" defense. It's not gonna work with me.

This listing is not ours. We are in no way associated with the person who posted this listing.

I accept your explanation at face value, for whatever it's worth.

They have another listing also, for K64. My suggestion is to flag it using E-bay's system.

This is the kind of thing that happens when people start doing pre-orders and stuff. I suppose it is par for the course around here.

Please do not take all this the wrong way. I have nothing against you, personally. In fact, I was planning on ordering a few cases from you. They do look nice.

Hey Bkkcoins,

Just so you know who/what you are dealing with regarding Terrahash.

I hate to see people's hard work being taken advantage of.

Hold up there Scary, now you are blurring lines.  You just call a poster out about his attempt to sell hardware that he does not have and now it looks like you are blaming that on TH. So which is it?

I just think Terrahash is a scam. But, whatever. To each his/her own.
430  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Off-Topic on: June 16, 2013, 07:50:16 PM
Yeah ok.

Whatever.
431  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Off-Topic on: June 16, 2013, 07:41:37 PM
What newmars was saying is that TH is based out of the Bay area of Cali.
The ebay auction is from Portland, and doubtful to be terrahash's listing.

You can check whatever you want in your E-bay preferences.

And, it takes about 30 seconds to make your computer appear like it's from Portland, or Slovenia (nothing against Slovenia), or whatever location you want.

So, while your observation is noted, it still does not exonerate Terrahash.

I would like an official Terrahash response to the question of "Why are they selling nonworking Klondike 16 units on Ebay?", before I request a scammer tag in the proper forum.

The final design has not been finalized by the community designer, and there is no software (to my knowledge) which will run the unit right now.

Again, I'm not flaming anybody. I am simply requesting information and pointing out (potentially uncomfortable) inconsistencies (as a service to the community).

"15 available / 5 sold"

Nice one.

Just because he found 5 suckers does not make it ok, at least in my view.

Like I said previously, I have no problem with people making money. But taking advantage of a community open source project, and putting stuff up for pre-order, when we actually KNOW it doesn't even work yet, is pretty slimy to me.

Just because people WANT to be taken advantage of, does not mean that I have to sit idly by, and watch it happen.

I've said my piece. To each his own. This is not a flame, it is simply an observation. People may do with it as they see fit.

Buy one on Ebay, before all the pre-orders even. Nice to know that people are really reputable around here. /sarcasm off

I'm not opposed to people making money, but this is way too blatant.

Will this work for mining?

It's only $99...

It seems to be up....but, i'm getting errors I've never seen before. I'm using the recommended bfgminer setup.

Like, "pool is issuing work for an old block ....."  WTF is this?

Tremendous amounts of "requested work updates"...dunno what this is, but it's much more than normal...normally blocks accepted are uninterrupted.

Then I saw my gpu line say "WAIT", never seen that before.

Not sure if they're under DDoS attack or whatever, but it aint good.

I have no idea what's going on, but I cannot connect with the pool at all.

I'm using the setup reccommended by the pool, and it just won't connect.

Internet is up, I can mine at my backup pool just fine..

bfgminer -o stratum+tcp://stratum.mining.eligius.st:3334 -O YourAddress           <----- this was working for me as of a day ago, does not work now....weird.

cg miner setup does not work either, just a flash of command line screen on the screen, and nothing. Used to work also...

Something is seriously messed up, because none of my miners will connect....

Well, it figures. Just as I was about to get a payout...lolz...
439  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Off-Topic on: June 16, 2013, 03:25:57 AM
So the assembly house does not solder on the 6-pin power connector? Interesting.

What software are you going to run the K16's with?

Are you providing software along with assembled boards? Assembled boards are nice, but if there is no software to run it, there is no point in assembling it.

Are you going to donate some boards to software developers for them to write it (Bkkcoins, Ckolivas, etc)...Huh

440  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Serial ATA RAID card with Avalon chips on: June 16, 2013, 03:17:25 AM
You need to have the proper traces (the little lines on the board) that are specific to those chips.

Each chip has its own pins with different voltages and signals going to each pin.

So, no, it's not as simple as sticking a chip or two to a board. The board has to be designed specifically for the chip.

Just like you cannot put an Intel processor onto an AMD motherboard. The pins do not match.
