421  Other / Politics & Society / Interesting thought I had about Bitcoin and certain religions on: December 16, 2015, 06:53:48 PM
I remember a guy here asking if gambling was haram (basically a sin). As far as I know, in the muslim world it is indeed strictly prohibited that you can gamble.
Well, if we take this argument deeper and look at Bitcoin's inner mechanism, you'll know that the mining process is essentially a big lottery where miners (players/gamblers) bet hashing power in hopes to get a reward.

My question is, would then Bitcoin be haram for the entire muslim community, or other religions where gambling is sin? As you can tell by my nickname I don't follow any religion, I would just find hilarious that a religion would prohibit Bitcoin usage because a fundamental part of it mechanism is considered gambling.
422  Economy / Economics / Re: Open a bank account without many papers that will respect my privacy on: December 16, 2015, 06:49:48 PM
You would need something like Switzerland I guess. I have never used that kind of banking where they supossedly have a privacy policy with their clients. I don't really believe it and as we say data can leak. The ideal situation would be to get your Bitcoins locally, but I guess it's pretty hard in Greece to find sellers that you can meet in real life with.
423  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: EARN Crypto NOW with Storj DriveShare on: December 16, 2015, 06:46:42 PM
Finally! - It Works!

Storj finally has an easy on-ramp to start renting out your extra drive space – and be paid for it!  I set up version 0.4.1 of DriveShare a couple of days ago on my Windows 7 computer; and, by every metric I know to test for, it's working splendidly.  I have it set up to use the available space I have on my native C: drive, as well as my external F: drive.

Here's the announcement for the new GUI: http://us8.campaign-archive1.com/?u=edba9fc4ce8b9095a31859cba&id=a2ba97e856

Downloads are available on GibHub: https://github.com/Storj/driveshare-gui/releases Be sure to get the latest version for your machine.

And here's the Storj web site: http://storj.io/

Storj is using their colored coin SJCX for rent earnings and payouts. You can exchange those for bitcoin at ShapeShift: https://shapeshift.io/

If you don't have a Counterparty wallet and don't want to mess with getting an SJCX address just to test the software, you're welcome to use mine to get you going. 12BoxGmEKUkLhHtc9qkxj2QC2MhZcff61A  As soon as you're ready, you can get your own address and start collecting some coin in your own account.

Ahh Storj, I remember reading about it ages ago before I got tired of waiting. It's now out and working? well that's great news, but could you explain a bit how it works in terms of rewards/space? The more space you "rent", the more coins you get I guess. Well what kind of returns can you expect if you rent at 1GB/coins? I need to know this before I consider if it's worth the effort or not since I don't have much space left, and i would rather use it for Maidsafe when it comes out (also tired of waiting but I know it will eventually come).
424  Economy / Economics / Re: If bitcoin price is $10.000, will fiat be worthless? on: December 16, 2015, 06:28:49 PM
bitcoin will never be able to suck all the fiat money, they can just print more without problem

also fiat is already worthless, but you're obligated to use it for the majority of things

if you mean collapsed, i don't think so

It's not worthless simply because people accept it. If someone gave you 1 million dollars you wouldn't say "no thanks, this is worthless". So that's the point. Even if the system is rigged, people all over the world recognize the dollar, so as long as people recognize it and use and accept it, it's going to have value.

When BTC is 10K each, it just means you can buy the same you would be able to buy 10K dollars, that's all.
425  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What unit do you find more comfortable when measuring BTC values? on: December 16, 2015, 06:26:34 PM
As others have mentioned, I prefer Bitcoin itself for higher priced items, but I go with Satoshis for smaller transactions. Those are the two that I learned first and work most naturally for me.

I know the metric system applied to bitcoin "makes sense" but I have a miserable time keeping straight which is which between mBTC and uBTC, which could have gotten me in trouble a couple times. I agree that not having anything between satoshis and bitcoins creates a large awkward hole in the middle for items of moderate price. But somehow I just don't see "bits" or something similar catching on.

Hopefully Bitcoin pricing will continue to move up and someday 1 satoshi will actually be worth something! :-)

Yeah, it's all or nothing for me too. BTC for big prices, satoshi for anything that would qualify as everyday purchases, such as doing groceries type of money. I don't buy much stuff with Bitcoin so im sure in the future once it's more common to do so, people will just keep used to it. I have some friends in Europe and when they went from their national currency to the EUR it was a pain in the ass at first too, but people got used to it.
426  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is Bitcoin 'real money' to you? on: December 16, 2015, 06:14:23 PM
I invest into bitcoin to have more options into spending in the future. In a way it is like real money because you can spend it, save it and earn it. Just like the cash you use everyday.

Yeah the difference is it is online. That is why some people think it is not real. They are telling people to get away from bitcoin because it is bad and is not real. Those who havent experience using it ill stay that way without knowing it is useful.

Yes due to no physical form (not most commonly used), people are lagging on recognizing bitcoin as real money. Even we can have physical bitcoin with private key in it, many people are not accepting it as real money. Without knowing the facts of bitcoin many people are staying away and asking other people to stay away.

The main reasons the average joe stands away from Bitcoin is because of it's high volatility and general misunderstanding of the thing, they still think that it's some weird technology used by terrorists because that's pretty much what mainstream media has said yet and most average people get their news from the mainstream media.
427  Economy / Economics / Re: Will Bitcoin always be dependent on fiat? Is it? on: December 16, 2015, 06:12:45 PM
And it shouldn't be other way than that.

Merchants are not speculators, if you price something in bitcoin and you hold bitcoin at the end the day you may have less value than you should, or you can have more and you have to pay capital gains and it complicates your accounting when the only thing you want to do is to sell oranges...

Not really, the ultimate dream is to have Bitcoin completely unpegged from any other currencies, and people using it directly to buy and get paid, that's how the Bitcoine conomy would fully flourish. Of course, as long as governments exist which issue their own currencies, this is just a fantasy.
428  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Betting on sport = gambling? on: December 15, 2015, 11:45:22 PM
I think this would fall under the category i call "informed gambling". There is pure gambling where it's just raw luck, % against % without anything else but chances where you can't think about a logic outcome. With betting, you can research and choose your pic based on evidence (a team or boxer performance or whatnot).
429  Economy / Gambling / Re: Is it profitable to run a dice gambling site? on: December 15, 2015, 11:40:15 PM
It's obviously profitable for those that have been succesfuly running one for a long period of time. For example, im sure that the guys at SatoshiDice or PrimeDice which are stablished names within the gambling game are by now pretty well off and the business sustains itself, I think it will only get better as more and more people adopt BTC and discover BTC gambling with it.
430  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Has Wired discovered the real Satoshi Nakamoto? (.. this time) on: December 15, 2015, 11:37:43 PM
Quote
It's becoming clear that everything the "media" pushes is a hoax, a lie, propaganda

Thats true. Good journalists are loosing their jobs when they report critical nowadays. Julian Assange must hide in an Embassy for telling the truth.

Most conspiracy theories have a true core.

Some media is hoax, but not all. In this case is a hoax, Wired hasn't discovered Satoshi.

At this point the media is going to suffer from "the boy that cried wolf" syndrome, basically they have said so many times that they got the real satoshi that when they eventually do get the real one, no one is going to believe them, which is actually good for us because that is the ultimate defense for satoshi against his privacy.
431  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How 1BTC can eventually be worth $11M on: December 15, 2015, 11:35:48 PM
We can hit 1 million realistically in the next 20 years, it's easier than we think but we are programmed to think such things are impossible, but do the math and you'll see that the amount of money needed is not that big compared to the trillions in fiat stocks and metal out there waiting to get in in in the Bitcoin system.
432  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Argentina’s New President Might Just be a Bitcoin Supporter on: December 15, 2015, 10:38:49 PM
Let's not forget that the guy that created Xapo (Wences Caesares) is also from argentina and said that he saw the true value in Bitcoin when he saw his family become a victim of massive national currency devaluation due hyper inflation and goverment control in the ways they could move money.
433  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Gmaxwell proves Craig Wright is a fraud on: December 15, 2015, 10:36:58 PM
I've no doubts Craig is an old bitcoiner, older than myself, but not Satoshi.

Craig is no one else but a poor soul looking for some self promotion if you ask me! Nothing more!
He's an early adopter that thought he could get away with being Satoshi. I mean why is it even a question "why would he do it?" isn't it clear? Being satoshi is like the ultimate street creed in the technology/hacker world, you would get royal treatment everywhere. Sure you would have a lot of haters specially on the banking industry and whatnot, but that doesn't outdo the massive positive output you would get in your area which is technology.
434  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [VIDEO] Craig Wright, inventor of Bitcoin (Satoshi Nakamoto), speaks on Bitcoin. on: December 15, 2015, 10:33:58 PM
It's clear to me now. It's not a coincidence that this happened after this lecture. He planned to auto leak those "document/evidence" after this to get notoriety, he has tons of problems with tax so being satoshi would bring him fame and millionaire deals for interviews.
435  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: In Gambling, Money is not everything on: December 14, 2015, 05:29:59 PM
The thing with slots with progressive wins is you always think "one more spin!" even if you are down and you are about to run out of funds, it's designed in a way that it triggers your brain to think "well, this time im going to hit a good roll and get all my money back". This is how you end up with 0 funds.
436  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Europa League/Champions League Lounge on: December 14, 2015, 05:26:45 PM
Interesting that Gent or Wolfsburg will be in the 1/4 final & Benfica or Zenit.

I bet the big boys who qualify will want to play one of those in the 1/4 final.

TOp 8 should be easy if all the big boys qualify for this match. The favourites to qualify is real madrid, barcelona, PSG from the big boys match .Manchestercity could maybe have some hard time from dynamo but they should have better chance that the other big boys

Well if Real keep performing this bad I think Barca has way bigger chances at winning this year. The latest matches by Real have been very lacklusting and apparently their coach Benitez is being doubted and may finish his contract this year.
437  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will BTC reach $500 during december? on: December 14, 2015, 05:24:12 PM
My latest sources say yes: (latest sources as me doing some amateur technical analysis with Bitcoinwisdom's tools). Well probably have a small correction again of 30 or 50 dollars before we smash through the 500 price range.
438  Economy / Economics / Re: CNN: Money is flying out of China on: December 14, 2015, 05:21:30 PM
This is what happens when a goverment tries to control people's capital, in combination with the fact the paradigm has shifted since 2009 and now people can be able to move wealth from A to B no matter how far A from B is and no matter what regulations you would have needed with other non-Bitcoin mediums of wealth transfer. This is a revolution and most people still don't get it.
439  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What unit do you find more comfortable when measuring BTC values? on: December 14, 2015, 05:19:51 PM
Satoshi and BTC.

Since the major part of the transaction happens with the fractions, I think it's more comfortable to talk about satoshi instead of trying to reading something with 8 decimal points using other units. If not, beeter to read the entire value.

But why someone would create a currency with 8 decimal points instead of using just atomic units is beyond me. Although I wouldn't to see this changing.

I believe that any measurement that uses the metric system is the easiest way to discuss values in general when discussing an amount of bitcoin with someone else.  I believe that slang terms like "millie" or "satoshi" should just be left out when trying to have an honest conversation.  Everyone tends to know the metric system universally since it's used for every type of scientific measurement, and I think that it should be kept that way since bitcoin is trying to become the first global currency.

Plus I mean think about it... while everyone on here knows what a "satoshi" is, is there any real reason to be measuring your bitcoin value in satoshis? There is literally no value in a satoshi, and it's misleading to say you have 1K satoshi's on hand when that still is in a sense, nothing.

I don't get the point, however. There was one day where even 1 BTC was just fraction of cent of one US dollar. Saying you have 1000 BTC didn't mean anything relevant.

Same, it's the only way I can put things into context. Since the price of Bitcoin changes too much, the intermediate units make my mind get a bit confused, BTC and satoshi are the stuff I use the most.
440  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Argentina’s New President Might Just be a Bitcoin Supporter on: December 14, 2015, 05:17:26 PM
There's definitely a strong connection since that guy is one of the Bitcoin pioneer sin Argentina. The new president better get with the times and realize the fact that his country is only going to stand the test of time if they get on Bitcoin early on. They are free to end up as they always do again if they ignore to do so tho.
