Bottom line: Depends on the value of Bitcoin

Paypal used to (dont know if they still do) give out a free RSA fob with each new account. I think they later started charging for them but the price was miniscal. WoW I believe uses the same system.

Aww you didn't benefit from the actions of a scammer. So sad. Stop spreading your doom and gloom shit. No-one cares.
4327  Economy / Economics / Re: The upside to the MtGox hax on: June 19, 2011, 09:04:19 PM
People also need to be aware (or remember) that MtGox was originally a 'gaming' site. It started dealing in Bitcoins when it was considered by many to be 'play money'. Whos going to invest in website security when the currency your handling is worth 0.01c and your cut of a trade is 0.65%??

However the stakes have been raised. The currency value has skyrocketed and some big boys have come to play. This isnt a game anymore. MtGox have had to come to that realisation in less than 2 months. But to invest big $$ in website security to protect a currency that could potentially drop back to a few cents just as spectacularly would have been madness. They needed to allow time to see if the currency stabilised which it now has. The people that criticise MtGox need to consider this fact.
4328  Economy / Economics / The upside to the MtGox hax on: June 19, 2011, 08:40:19 PM
This will most certainly make them reassess their site security (though I suspect this was already something they were doing prior to this latest incident).

MtGox needs to be made secure as any site can be. It needs to employ the latest web security technology and needs to be run by experts in the field. Its not like MtGox doesnt have the funding to be able to do this either so there's no excuses.

This incident I believe is being handled well by the site owner/s. At the end of the day it will be 'business as usual' and no-one (including those who seemed to temporarily gain from this scammers actions) will be any the worse off.

I'll be allowing MtGox some more time to harden their security. These things take time. Im sure neither they nor anyone else remotely interested in Bitcoin could have foreseen the growth explosion that was about to occur just a couple of months ago. I also think people expecting MtGox to have been prepared and able to defend against experienced hackers is unreasonable. MtGox knows it unreasonable which I suspect is why put the maximum $1000/day withdrawal limit in place - just in case something like this should happen. But I wont be waiting forever. MtGox needs to act and act fast if traders are to maintain any level of confidence in their site. To not act will result in huge financial loss and others will pick up the ball and do what is required to secure traders against this type of attack. For now I'll let MtGox run with the ball - its their call as to where they and we go from here.
4329  Economy / Economics / Re: Rollback is BS on: June 19, 2011, 08:21:47 PM
The trades weren't legitimate so I think its entirely fair.
4330  Economy / Economics / Re: What is holding you from investing tons of money in this? on: June 19, 2011, 07:40:50 PM
I dont have tonnes of money - yet.
4331  Economy / Economics / Re: Huge Bitcoin sell off due to a compromised account - rollback on: June 19, 2011, 07:39:05 PM

That being said, the 1k limit is a huge "regulation" in and of itself.

True, but it perhaps prevented a more dire outcome for the market all in the end? At least this way its only temporary.
4332  Economy / Economics / Huge Bitcoin sell off due to a compromised account - rollback on: June 19, 2011, 07:22:21 PM
Mark Karpeles (MtGox)
posted this on Jun-20 04:07:

The bitcoin will be back to around 17.5$/BTC after we rollback all trades that have happened after the huge Bitcoin sale that happened on June 20th near 3:00am (JST).

Service should be back by June 20th 10:00am (JST, 01:00am GMT) with all the trades reversed and accounts available.

One account with a lot of coins was compromised and whoever stole it (using a HK based IP to login) first sold all the coins in there, to buy those again just after, and then tried to withdraw the coins. The $1000/day withdraw limit was active for this account and the hacker could only get out with $1000 worth of coins.

Apart from this no account was compromised, and nothing was lost. Due to the large impact this had on the Bitcoin market, we will rollback every trade which happened since the big sale, and ensure this account is secure before opening access again.

Power supply

Nope, offers plenty of power for 2x6770 Smiley (550W corsair)

A 600W is recommended according to this chart http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/graphics/amd-radeon-hd-6000/hd-6770/Pages/amd-radeon-hd-6770-overview.aspx#3

Thats not really an option. Im going to see if I can pickup a converter and run the 2 small monitors off the display ports rather than the DVI ports.
4339  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: PSU requirement for 2 x 6850's? on: June 18, 2011, 12:50:34 PM
Ok I was able to enable the 2nd card in the BIOS to run @ PCI-E 2.0 x 4 (no option to go higher) & can run 2 x miners in Crossfire (which restricts me to using just 1 monitor) but not separately. The second card only runs @ 100 Mhashs/s in this configuration. So it seems my PSU is ok.

But I have 3 monitors in total including my main monitor & Ive got the 2nd card plugged into 2 monitors but it doesnt see them at all (even if not running CF). I can get 1 of these monitors enabled by plugging it in to the same card that the main monitor is plugged into (and extending the desktop) but the 3rd ones not seen at all. If I swap them around it works fine also on the 2nd card so neither the card is faulty. Now I could be wrong here but arent these cards supposed to be able to run 6 monitors all up? Admittedly the 2 smaller side monitors are a few years old now but I have them coupled up to VGA-DVI adaptors and they worked fine on an old cheapy vid card I was using before. I'm thinking I could buy a splitter cable and run the 2 side monitors off the 2nd DVI port on the main card but this still doesnt get me round the fact I cant mine with both cards at the same time (except under CF). Ive seen posts on here about running 'dummy plugs' but isnt that only something you need to do if you only have 1 monitor and doesnt apply to Win 7 anyway? Kinda miffed atm..
4340  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / PSU requirement for 2 x 6950's? on: June 18, 2011, 09:32:12 AM
Hi all

Ive picked up another 6950 today but cant get it to mine while the other ones mining also. It starts to hash but then the PC just reboots after a second or so. Im thinking PSU but I have an 800W PSU. The cards are NOT in crossfire and from what I can find it appears the maximum draw from both cards should only be about 470W total? Aside from the cards Im running 2 SSD's and 1 HDD (as well as an optical drive and some case fans). Any ideas? Both cards run fine individually. Ive also done a fresh reinstall of Windows 7.

Also, I noticed this is the AMD control panel:
