990mhz is an absolutely insane overclock. Don't start with stuff like that, not to mention the fact most 6990's can't take those frequencies (even if they can you'll have to up the voltage leading in too much power consumption compared to the extra hashrate)

I find 920MHz a stable frequency which yields about 410mhash/s per core for a total of 820mhash/s per card.
920 is my sweet spot too, but I cant get my memory down below 1250, I've tried the 11.6 drivers but there's a bug which prevents the current memory clock actually changing with aticonfig. AmdOverdriveCTRL does exactly the same.
Do you have any tips?

I might just flash the bios with RBE if there's no other solution.

524  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 6970 running with default settings too hot on: July 21, 2011, 09:02:07 AM
What make is your 6970? I've had no end of trouble with XFX and their shoddy thermal paste application, seriously I think they give their cards to kindergarten kids in an art class to apply the thermal paste it's that bad!

You said previously that you don't want to touch hardware, but I think in this case you're going to have to. It's really easy to remove the heatsink and replace the thermal paste with something like Artic Silver 5. (just a few screws on the back of the card to take the heatsink & fan shroud off)
525  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Lego Folding Build - Too Cool! on: July 21, 2011, 02:41:34 AM
Awesome!

I wonder if anyone's built a rig with K'Nex?

Look through the rigs thread.  I'm pretty sure someone in there has built a K'Nex rig to support his/her cards Smiley
yes those are lego...and duplo...It's a holdover until I get some time to build the wood frame.  Two 6970's at ~360MH/s on stock voltage and one 5830 at 270MH/s, also on stock voltage...all running on linuxcoin.  Using the GPU fans @ 50% they all hover around 73C in my basement drawing 720 watts.

I had an ocz 850w go bad on me in my F@H rig and almost cause some serious damage.
I was pulling 625w from the wall and everything was running fine for around 6 months until one day I noticed a pretty funky fishy type smell in the room. I didn't think anything of it at the time and just opened a window. As I was walking back across the room I heard this terrible cat/bat type screeching sound come from the back of the pc so I walked over to it and got about 3 steps away and BANG, followed by a puff of smoke.
Luckily the fuse blew on my socket and no damage was done to the property but after further inspecting the power supply its outer casing was terribly deformed, almost as if someone had hit it from the inside out with a sledge hammer, breaking the fan & grill. It looks as if one of the larger capacitors (sorry I'm not an electrician so it may be called something else, transformer unit?) had exploded and shot through the psu case.
I was a little shaken up and called ocz that afternoon to arrange a replacement, which has been running fine for 12 months now though I'm not sure how far away it is from doing the same or if the previous one was a manufacturing defect, ocz was rather quite after the replacement was sent.

I don't understand why you accepted any form of RMA service.
If you purchased the card within 14 days why not send it back for a full refund or an exchange?
529  Other / Meta / I miss the old days. on: July 20, 2011, 06:14:35 PM
I miss how the forum used to be around March-April time, the quality of posting was amazing and the forum really did shine with brilliant technical information.
I can't help but feel as if a truck load of teenagers have jumped on the bandwagon to derail threads and bump their post count with useless crap.

I also feel guilty for the quality of my own posting and have thought many times about killing my account here as to not add to the continual problem.

I want bitcoin to succeed, I really do, its taken over my life the past few months and I cant help but feel angry reading the majority of forum threads now a days.

What can I do myself to make bitcoin succeed and drive the riff raff away?  Undecided

I don't know specifically about the 6970 cards, but I've always found Sapphire Vapor-X cards to run very cool.

Physical goods dont have the paypal problem that virtual goods do. They simply dont. If he has a delivery confirmation than paypal will tell the customer to f-off.

So the buyer could not even raise a dispute about product not fit for purpose or does not fit description?

He could raise a dispute, which will result in the buyer having to send the item back to the seller for a refund.
536  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How did you find out about Bitcoin? on: July 18, 2011, 04:13:11 PM
A friend of mine told me about it, I spent a good 1 week solid (not sleeping till 4am) reading up and researching bitcoin, from the forum to the wiki.

It's kind of taken over my life since then   Cheesy

I am, for anonymous purposes, If Bitcoin is outlawed and my buisness website is taken down, your hosting will remain safe. My reseller has no idea I'm using bitcoin.
That's fair enough, thanks for clearing it up.
538  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Unlimited Hosting For 1BTC/Year on: July 18, 2011, 04:06:58 PM
So you're either reselling the unlimited shared hosting package on 000webhost.com or you're using that as a free webhost for your main site.
Both of which ring alarm bells.
 Huh

Sure most of us nerds in the forum have social problems, but you cant just stand up and start yelling random letters. What are you talking about?
It's a game, you might have to compute the public key from that pem & then do something else fancy with it.
