Could you secure some investor funds to pay back losses to customers now, and payback the investor after your business picks back up?

This would be a possibility if investors interested in helping continue operations show interest. It is certainly something I am thinking about.

Do you have enough funds to cover this loss yourself?

I am having trouble thinking of other options that would allow for trading to resume, without turning to a fractional model, that dont include acquiring new large sums of money.

Even tho only a small majority of the coins are ever in use at any time

I guess what this means is that he realizes that he could have continued operating under a fractional banking model but chose not to.  Which is good.

This also means most of the coins should have been in cold storage, but they weren't.  Which is bad.

So far BitFloor has been great.  I would want the service to continue operation.

So ~30K of ~30K in BTC has been lost?

The amount totals to ~24K BTC.

Why was the majority of this not in a cold wallet?

How long under normal operation would it take for BitFloor to recoup the loss in the form of fees?

i honestly was going to take that bet from both of you but as gold is an important part of my newsletter analysis i can't be seen as having a conflict of interest.  too bad.

Should i conclude that you closed your shorts ?  Grin
Thanks cypherdoc, that was the best joke of the day

yeah, i guess you're right.  you're both on:  labestiol and SkRRJyTC'.

to reiterate:  if gold hits $1900 before it hits $1500, you both win 1 BTC from me.  if gold hits $1500 before it hits $1900, i win 1 BTC from each of you.  no time limit.

please confirm.

Confirmed.

Quietness and humbleness are oozing from thread.

so you've declared victory?  it's all over; gold is going to $30,000/oz?  what is exactly your prediction so we can put it on the record too?

I predict that gold will go over $1900 before it goes under $1500.

Agree, would gladly bet a symbolic 1BTC on that. Deal cypherdoc or adamstgBit ?

I would also wager 1 BTC.

So despite the pretty nice bounce back from the trendline, the new highs for the month, you still believe it's a fake breakout ?
And all that without Bernanke annoucing any QE   Shocked

Time to cover your shorts cypherdoc  Wink

Dont forget the USDX making a new low...

Huh?  81 on the USDX is quite high be recent standards.  IIRC, it's been down to the 72 level in fairly recent times before attention shifted the the ill-health in EU-land.  If/when attention shifts back (or when the US take the actions necessary to drop it) I anticipate significantly higher PM's.  Maybe approaching records in constant $$ terms for the next cycle.  Or maybe not.  Either way, I'm in neither a buying nor a selling mode for probably several years so the spot price only of academic interest to me.  Not unlike Bitcoin in fact (to me.)

I really like the concept, I just don't see how it is possible to have competing "road companies".  My house is already so close to every other building that the one road we do have is the only thing separating most buildings.  Where would the competing roads exist? Underground?  In the air?

Edit: I can see how a competing phone company would be able to either run lines on existing poles or even put up their own poles, but I cant see how a competing road company could "put up their own poles".  Some things have very real physical limitations, no matter the technology.

Wow, I thought I was a strong libertarian... but this thread is showing me that Im weak... LOL

I would have thought taxing citizens to build roads was a no-brainer, guess I will have to reconsider that, or perhaps reconsider some of my libertarian views as well.
537  Other / Politics & Society / Taxes on Bitcoin transactions on: August 28, 2012, 06:06:13 PM
I see we have some non-Libertarians in the thread who think there should be publicly maintained roads, etc.  Grin

Perhaps there shouldn't be, but there clearly are.

In what fantasy land did freedom create roads?  All the roads that I know of were created by the DOT.

Now you know of some created by private industry:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Private_highways_in_the_United_States

I take it excluding the handful of roads listed there the rest were built with public funds?

Strange that your clearly better idea of private roads only accounts for <1% of all roads, eh?
