It's getting colder and colder here.  They are still working in 20F or below here.   So it's good to see cold does not seem to have an effect.

I have also turned off some fan's.  Winter mining is a heck of a lot easier then summer mining when mining a decent scale.

yeah, its great in the winter, i usually just put a few antminers near a slightly-open window and they run quietly and without being too hot

@ 0.06 J/GH 25.6TH on an MBoard would be 1.5kW.  Although possible, I think it's unlikely.

m-boards originally had issues when pushed past 600W, but that was largely due to there only being 2xPCIe connections (and 300W/each is too much for most wirings). There is/was an extra pair of screw terminals though, which could likely handle 600W+ themselves.

If you used all the connections available, you could likely achieve up to 900-1200W, which require active cooling and likely heatsinks.
Don't forget you'd be stuck with their software also which, to be blunt, is terrible.

Look at the number of orphans they pump out at the moment - and how on occasion they put out blocks that are well over 10s late on the network.
I'd not be surprised if they put them out much later and no one sees them.
Had one on my pool the other week (older bitfury with their software) that sent a stale block to the pool 69 seconds after the block change ...

So using their setup could be anywhere as high as 10% wasted ... i.e. could be as low as 90% of any specs quoted.
If I found any new miners on my pool with their hardware, I'd close the account - it's pretty much the equivalent of block withholding using a miner that is known to do this.

yeah, the GUI was pretty lacking, and often the start/stop buttons had no effect or could take anything from 5-30seconds to complete thier action. The actual mining hardware though was quite solid.

it would be an easy fix though (i think/hope) and should be done, especially if the stale rate is as high as you are saying

another option is to underclock by 50-100MHz (lose 200-400GH) and you will have about 50-100W less heat to deal with, and can run the fans a bit lower.

Im currently at 16% fans on a B8, with 61-66C temperatures and set for 4.45TH. (the -1C intake air helps)

Did someone made some OC on the batch 8?

Ive tried to go as high as 712MHz successfully with errors rate of ~0.015% and temps of 55-65.  Didn't go any further because i dont have a kill-a-watt and am only using a single 1350W (enermax gold) PSU.

I suspect bitmain instilled the higher voltage in order to maximize hashrate/chip for short-term ROI. I suspect a B8 unit could exceed 800MHz/1420wDC/~1500wAC

a higher voltage means less amps drawn for the same wattage. so whatever overclocks a lower-voltage chip can achieve should be possible to exceed with a higher voltage in the B8

I had a power outage.  The good new's is the S7 seemed to handle it great.  No issues from turning off in not the greatest way, and it booted up and worked fine after power was on.

So it get's some point's for being reliable which is important.

I never noticed any issues when hard switching off/on any antminer. All series boots up perfectly.

IIRC S2 had *some* issues with that though, due almost entirely to the beaglebone SD card (same reason for almost every BBB/Rpi+SD-based miners failing after power cycle)

Can I see a picture of your Foam setup?  Also the this screeching sound is not normal as the other S7s are not like this one.  I see other people having same issues and the noise goes way beyond the garage door due to the high pitch vs 2 other S7 which can't be heard thru my entrance door which is a strong fire resistant door.  I will see what support says.  Not sure if it's due to New Year but it's been almost 2 days with no response, they were faster on the response when I was short $18 for my order due to fees just 2 days ago.  What's everyone's experience on the turn around time for response?  Is this normal?

This is brand new and within Warranty period, they should fix it.  I don't think that's asking too much.  If we keep giving in on trying to fix everything or come up with Mickey Mouse solutions, we will continue getting inferior products and  services.

Good Luck. You will not get a response over the whistling fan noise unless you are a high profile customer meaning you order a ton of miners. The little guys cannot get a bad fan replaced and they will tell you to buy one locally.
Yoshi did me a solid by helping out, but even he will tell you China is doing anything for a fan.
May as well put a piece of tape or one of the other suggestions.

I sincerely do wish you the best and I am with you as far as making as much noise as possible.
When I was done wrong I also documented everything and people here on the forum told me to forget it, they had already learned Bitmain isn't going to help. Look at all the people who are waiting on complete miners or hash boards, they could care less about a fan...unfortunately.

these delta fans are worth at least $10/ea  and are heavy to ship from china, so replacing one will likely cost them up to $15 plus time spend arranging it. Due to minimal manpower, they have bigger things to deal with (this isnt good service though)

These fans are naturally loud, but sometimes theres a defect in there that doesnt read PWM, has a chipped/off-balance fan, bad bearing, etc and as a result can be much higher pitched whine/screech than normal.

your best bet is aftermarket replacement. go find a fan that can meet your airflow needs. 20% fans is about 70-80cfm, 40% fans is 90-100cfm, 80% is likely over 120cfm. a replacement will cost you $15-30 and be a better quality/noiselevel without waiting 1-2 weeks from china

ps: Spondoolies-Tech replaced my bad SP20 fan (had a defect, likely a bad bearing, and was horrifically loud compared to even an Sp10). They were the most stand-up manufacturer for support, but bitmain doesn't give much after-market focus

Hi All,

Anyone have this issue where their S7 makes a really loud screeching sound from the FANs but if you place a small cardboard piece to funnel air differently then it would sound like other S7 where it's just rushed Air sound.  Please see image below.  I'm opening a support ticket as the sound is incredibly loud and annoying and over power the noise created by 3 other system by itself.

Yes - this is a very effective trick at higher RPM. I've found an obstruction placed at the right spot in past the outlet fan works too, and should be better for cooling uniformity.

I believe that this is due to the outlet fan running too unburdened/too low pressure delta in the bitmain design. I think the inlet fan should probably be run at lower RPM than the outlet; the cardboard trick changes things just enough to bring both fans back into a loaded condition.

How do I permanently fix this issue?  The other S7 of the same batch is not behaving this way.  Will fan replacement fix this issue?  

Dunno Sad Let me know if you find out? Has anyone looked at the fan RPM implementation on the controller board -- is it amenable to tuning front vs. rear?
I have the same problem, the sound is unberable, and goes through two walls. One s7 is ok the other outputs that wistle sound

I believe the accepted solution for that has been a piece of tape on the intake screen.  I have done it myself on two units.  

Shouldn't BitMain replace for our FANs to fix the issue?  We shouldn't have to duct tape or alter our devices to fix a defect when it's within warranty.  What is the usual turn around time for BitMain support?  I have a ticket open with them for 2days and haven't heard back.

The sound is natural to  an with such high rpm and airflow, dissipating 1200W+ in a short tube. The SP20 was equally loud, almost worst at full speeds, most people had to run it <900W if they wanted the fans to spin at a LESS-loud speed. same for gear like the S5, SP10/SP3x

With the software tweak to get fans <20%, noise is actually quite bearable. I have them machine fed 0C outside air, so can keep the volume down without much issue.

20% fan @ 4.7TH with 62-67C temperatures (board 3 is hottest?). noise is as good as the S3
17% fan @ 4.5TH. noise is totally acceptable to be in the main room
15% fan @ 4.3TH. quiet. similar to a game console or desktop computer that has loud(ish) fans

Not directly, i got them with quakefiend's PSU package.
odd, as i said they have a decent flex to them, about equal to any other thick wired cable (such as a thick USB cord or C19 PSU cord).
like any thick wire, if you bend it it will retain the bending to some extent.
The picture in the above post is a good example; if i were to release, the wire would probably spring partway back (to about 90 degree angle)

Without the cold air from outside, low-rpm is far from sufficient if i am tageting a 55-60C operational temperature
20C (ambient) = 3.6TH
10C = 4TH
5C = 4.3TH
0C = 4.6TH
-5C = 4.8TH (and 0.011% errors, havent pushed further yet)
It is possible to go lower than 20% PWM with my modified bitmain_spi file :
The only modification is that it can go to 10% min instead of 20% min. (You still need to set the fan percentage to what you want  : example 18%)
This allows to effectively  decrease the noise from the s7 (totally silent if set at 10%) if you are in a very cold ambient temperature or if you downclock the frequency seriously
It should not be used if the temperature is > 70°C. Check that the stop miner when temp is over 80°C box is checked in the configuration page.

It works! looking at the two files, seems the difference is 2-3 hex values that are modified. The method provided above works, but heres the easy way for those on windows:

CAUTION: comparing the modified file against the original THAT WAS ON MY BATCH 8 shows a large number of differences, as does comparing my original with the "original" file uploaded above.  The vast majority of changes seem to be incremental hex values: 4F becomes 4E, 83 becomes 82, 9A becomes 99, etc. not sure why though

SOLUTION: using a site like www.diffnow.com, compare the existing bitmain_spi.ko file with the modified one provided above. If there are only 2-3 changes its safe to change. 2) download and run winscp.

5) transfer the bitmain_spi_s7-fan_10.ko file to that directory, and then rename as bitmain_spi.ko
6) login to the miner's webUI. change fan setting there and "save&apply"
Not sure if changing it this way will survive a reboot, but the process is simple to repeat.

OPTIONAL:
7) copy the bitmain_spi_s7_fan_10.ko file to /config/bitmain_spi_s7_fan_10.ko
Cool if modifications are lost on system restart, SSH in and type:

In every batch of cables ive handles so far, the cables i get are as flexible as you would expect for 16awg wiring. They could be easily wrapped around objects or bend 180 degrees, and flex back on their own.  Definitely not stiff like a piece of wood

with the cold front moving into ontario, Ive been able to bring my inake temps down from ~5C to below 0C.  Fans are at the lowest setting (doesnt seem to have go any slower than 15% PWM (2000-2100 rpm)) and board temperatures of around 54-62C using 681MHz/4.6TH

is it possible to get the PWM to go lower? If i enter 1%, 5%, 10% there's no noticed difference in volume.

With a proper fan controller they'd surely go lower, but bitmain probably set a lower limit. Could possibly be worked around by hacking the firmware, but that isn't worth it IMO. 2100 should be plenty quiet, and you want to make sure you have enough static pressure.

Whats the demand like for sheathed cables? Obviously they wont be terribly useful for industrial-scale operations, but I imagine some home users might be interested? I can try to whip up a few samples and go from there

Has anyone received B8 and measured the power consumption at the wall yet? 1300w + 10% seem a bit on the high side, completely capping a 15a120v breaker and leaving no headroom for OC or anything.

I have 2 Batch8 pulling 11 amps  combined total on a pdu running bitmain 1600w psu. Another B8 running on 120v powered by Corsair rm1000 (2 boards/ 846 watts) and Corsair rm850 (1 board/controller 454 watts). My readings come from the Cyberpower battery backups so I am unsure how accurate that is. Fans running at 50% manual (setup in a back room with windows open, 30 degree F temps outside)

Temps in Missouri had been warmer previously so maybe I should drop my fan speed now that the boards are no warmer than 45 with the colder temps outside??
 

As far as the 120v/psu discussion goes, has anyone seen these?? Are they legit for running a Bitmain 1600w PSU as advertised?

that 110->220V adapter is a waste of money. $130 will buy you a brand new 800W-1000W GOLD PSU, and save you having 2-5% power losses in the power converter.

and yes, 45C is pretty low board temperature. 50-60C is the best balance between noise and heat.

Thank you for your advice. I agree. That was just one of the tests I did for maybe 3 minutes. I agree I dont link having too high of temps. Before I was having issues with this unit I always ran the fan at 100%. The room I was "Testing" in for that screenshot has to have noise kept at a minimum.

I have also tried reseating all connectors to no avail.

IMO temps up to 110 are fine. 115+ is a sign your settings need a slight adjustment

Few steps to check for hardware issues:
1) confirm that PCIe connector is properly seated, delivering power, not burnt out at all
2) open up unit. inspect blade for signs of damage (such as a burn mark or chipped components)
3) reseat all data connectors. Swap which sides the blades are on to rule out a cable/controller issue
4) this should have been about 30min without power.
5) reassemble everything, put SP20 in a warm (>20C) room, and even hit it with a blowdrier if you have one handy. if the board is 25-30C when you start the unit, that might be your best chance of mitigating any thermal issues on the ASIC-init.

if these dont identify/resolve the issue, its a bad chip or other failed component. not much can be done about that at this point unless the marketplace on the forums will buy/sell it
