561  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Which is profitable, Dice Site Investment Vs Cloud Mining? on: May 14, 2015, 07:53:17 AM

Cloud Mining is never profitable - if they could make more mining than renting, why would they bother renting?

Purchasing a cloud mining contract is a a bet that future difficulty will not rise as much as the cloud mining company expected it too when they originally priced the contract. A contract may actually turn profitable for you if difficulty does not increase as expected. If that happens the problem then becomes a question of whether the company will continue to honor the contract or if they would just disappear and keep the mining revenue for themselves.

any voltage settings for 200mhz or somewhere around this number?

is it normal for some asics to drop off, to come back, or to be at half wattage? Embarrassed

thx!

If the cubes that are behaving this way are all connected to one power supply, it might be an indication that the power supply is almost dead. It happened to me twice with Lepa 1600 power supplies after powering 3 cubes each for about 9 months. Those Lepa 1600's are junk. I was only using 1200W evenly balanced across 3 power rails.
563  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Core code of SAK on: May 13, 2015, 11:55:11 AM
The core code of SAK is to apply the core code of Bitcoin, and only the encryption algorithm adopts encryption algorithm, so all the applications of Bitcoin now can be removed to SAK at any time.

Shouldn't this be in the alt-coins subforum? In any case, many other alt-coins are based on the Bitcoin code base.
564  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Which do you value most when you choose a BTC exchange? on: May 13, 2015, 11:33:34 AM
Although security is mandatory, it is not a sufficient condition for me. The exchange would also need to make deposits and withdrawals easy through multiple channels, minimal verification, etc. What is the point of a secure exchange if you cannot get money in and out? The exchange certainly should not ask for more documents than a bank would. I get treated like royalty at my fiat banks (in spite of how much I hate them) - on the other hand I feel like BTC exchanges treat me like I am a 2-bit scammer.

It's your lucky day!  Smiley
These sorts of things always seems to pop up from time to time, i have probably received about 0.1BTC all up from different sorts of btc advertising over the years.

And how much did you spend in fees using up the 0.1 BTC?
566  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Please discuss. Is the future of crypto in POW? on: May 11, 2015, 11:08:11 AM
POS is a dead end, because of the non-monopole nature of cryptocurrency, people will pay nothing for a coin that cost nothing to make

Exactly. The concept of letting the largest stakeholders make the most money (without doing any significant work) is pretty close to how the central banks of the world currently operate. Do people really want that from a cryptocurrency?
567  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Swedish ASIC miner company kncminer.com on: May 11, 2015, 10:40:48 AM
Sorry if this has been asked before, but is it possible to convert a Jupiter controller into a Neptune controller? The reason I am asking is because I would like to repackage 2 Neptune cubes + controller into a 4U chassis but I don't have enough Neptune controllers to do this. However, I have some old "November" Jupiters laying around and it would be great if I could use their controllers.

yep folk say it is do'able (see previous msgs in the thread) you just flash the jupiter SD to the neptune SD stuff from what i gather and viola

let us know how it goes...we hear people say it works but little else..hopefully because it works as quick and easy as my previous sentence
they don't bother to give feedback on the process here because it works well.

good luck Smiley

Thanks, I will give it a try this weekend.

569  Other / Meta / Re: mods explain why my account got banned on: May 11, 2015, 04:44:01 AM
Shouldnt the admins just change the message to something more descriptive so we dont see 1 post everyday of users asking why they were banned? Something like you got banned for insubstantial posts, spam posts or useless and pointless posts wearing a signature ad.

I agree with this suggestion.  Don't assume the person speaks good English (most being banned probably don't) so change the message so it is clearer that the account is suspended for xx days and they can post again after that time period.

I understand if the message is being typed in manually though - don't want to waste time typing in the same shit over and over.   Wink

Yes instead of showing something short and cryptic like "Insubstantial posts+sig ad" (which looks like it might be an attempt to cram the explanation into a varchar(30) database field originally meant to store short codes) how about displaying some user friendly text such as "The reason for your ban: you have written insubstantial posts while enrolled in a signature ad campaign." It does not have to be typed manually.
570  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I let my last credit/debit card expire this month on: May 10, 2015, 02:01:06 PM

You're wrong.  Wink

You're not avoiding them if you're not supposed to pay them. There's no tax avoidance in your case.

I've always thought that in common terminology tax avoidance and tax evasion were 2 different things. The first would be legal, such as moving the location of your business to a different jurisdiction, while the latter would be illegal (such as simply not paying taxes you are supposed to).
571  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Вo you protect your anonymity? on: May 10, 2015, 11:25:17 AM
aren't you guys worried about tainting your coins? blacklisting and trouble spending mixed bitcoins is a real threat in the future (at least it is reasonable to calculate with this possibility).
bitcoin is an open ledger, there is no anonymity unless you think buying launch with bitcoin where they don't need an ID counts as withdrawing bitcoins. But wait until the big regulated transaction processors come into play and simply deny your transactions because your coins are on the list.
well, i guess you can always try to sell your tainted coins on a black market at a small discount...

At some point in time all coins in circulation will be tainted. It won't be practical to block transactions just because the coins were used in some alleged criminal activity at some point in the past.
572  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is PoS the future of Bitcoin mining? on: May 07, 2015, 11:44:07 AM
People can't even agree to a simple fork to increase the blocksize to 20MB. Why would you think that forking Bitcoin to a Piece-of-Shit coin could stand any chance of happening?
573  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin Core: internal fatal error, help! on: May 06, 2015, 12:25:27 PM
It says "database corrupted" when it crashed while verifying blocks. However, it loaded fine the second time. This could mean that your hard drive has marginally bad sectors (or you might have a poor quality SSD, but my experience with bad SSDs is that the entire drive usually goes offline).
574  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: 84 Gigabytes Per Month, Per Connection on: May 06, 2015, 03:34:49 AM
@^

Can you explain the details of why miners might not want to include transactions? Does it make it harder to solve a block? Or something else?

Either way, when the block rewards lower significantly, at that time, miners will be forced to accept more transactions, no?

Beyond a certain point larger blocks incur an increasing risk of getting orphaned if they take too long to propagate across the network.
575  Other / Off-topic / How much data does your car track? on: April 24, 2015, 11:01:28 PM
I took my car in for a scheduled service and without me asking the dealer apparently gave the car a software update. The software that runs the navigation, radio, driver assist, cameras and what not now behaves differently. It seems a lot smarter than before and I am somewhat concerned that it might be tracking and reporting my movements to some central database. It is a fairly new car with a lot of electronic gizmo and I am in the US. It seems to be connected to some network because I do get live traffic updates that enables the GPS to bypass traffic jams.

Does anybody here know exactly how much data a car tracks - say those equipped with OnStar or ConnectedDrive? I am guessing that this forum might have a number of privacy conscious readers who might know the answer.
576  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: I've just opened account on Localbitcoins.com and scammed 0.4 BTC ! on: April 20, 2015, 11:40:41 PM
As far as I know Localbitcoins can only hold BTC in escrow and not fiat. Therefore I suspect that the email is fake.

OP should only have released the coins after the money (Turkish Lira) is in hand.

578  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Blockchain used as a database storage system for records to replace MYSQL? on: April 18, 2015, 06:06:18 PM
Ps: I've given this example because of mysql & wordpress (blog) relation.

This is off-topic, but I feel like it is unfortunate that Wordpress was built on top of MySQL because it is a very inefficient technology stack based on what's available today. It would have been more appropriate to have built Wordpress on top of a noSQL document database such as CouchDB or MongoDB. Unfortunately, when Wordpress was first designed noSQL databases did not exist.

Back on topic, MySQL is just not just a storage system - it is a relational database. With a relational database system you expect things like records, tables, indexes, primary keys, constraints, yadayadayada ... How are you going to implement these features on top of the blockchain?
579  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Blockchain used as a database storage system for records to replace MYSQL? on: April 18, 2015, 05:54:34 PM
but say i dont need my data immediately and its not time critical data. say i just want to have a place to store it for redundancy backup for later retrieval. no number of backups or raid storage devices is going to beat the scale of bitcoin's 6000+ nodes. its like replicating your data on 6000+ computers. what other system is even comparable? bitcoin's blockchain might not be the most efficient for such a system, but it definitely is the most reliable so far among its peers.

On my PC the blockchain right now takes up 37.1 GB of disk space. I don't see how this idea can be practical or scalable.
580  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Report Predicts Boom in Bitcoin Adoption by Marijuana Dispensaries on: April 18, 2015, 01:08:30 PM
The usage of Bitcoin ATMs and vending machines could increase among marijuana dispensaries, predicts Green Rush Review.

In its recent promotional press release, the medical marijuana news website blamed the absence of proper banking infrastructure as one of the major reasons why cannabis businesses would move towards other bankable options such as Bitcoin.

Once MJ is legal, people won't need to hide the fact they are purchasing it.   Undecided

As long as it is not 100% legal especially at the Federal level, banks will be pressured to not provide credit card merchant services to dispensaries even though these dispensaries are legit at the state level. This is where Bitcoin will step in. It may take some time for cannabis to be legalized federally so there is plenty of time to take advantage of this "grey market".
