561  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Program doesn't start at all on Windows 7 x64 on: May 15, 2011, 03:44:26 AM
This happened to me today on Win7 32bit. I clicked on bitcoin shortcut to start it, but nothing happened. I opened task manager and noticed that bitcoin.exe is running but there was no gui. The reason for this may have been high processor load due to other tasks on my computer. As soon as the load dropped, gui appeared. In total it was probably about 5mins

The services which are ultimately purchased are probably all kinds of things. Access to child pornography (I've just heard vague reports, haven't been able to confirm their existence, probably the most hush hush one), drugs (I've seen multiple sites, a few of which were said to be legit, can't confirm the majority, though), renting domains/shells/servers anonymously (these I have seen and yes, definitely real and in use). As for what some might call "legitimate" or simply legal services... I'm sure there are some, I just don't know of any, really.

I know you're trolling but still:

565  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Are Bitcoiners Primarily Male or Female??? on: May 15, 2011, 01:07:02 AM
Gents, this is serious biz. Without some female compassion we are destined to to lead a violent life of corruption and greed!

You think? IMO, without women it would lead to a very full filing and pacifistic life in front of tv/computer with a can of beer. It's women and money why we have wars
566  Other / Off-topic / Re: It's because of crazy people like this... on: May 15, 2011, 12:55:47 AM
I think we are all animals and put ourselves first. The only thing that prevents society from such things is moral and environment in which they live. What today's "you are the best, you are worth it, you are individual" culture does is makes us compromise our moral more and more. This is just an extreme case of that and isolation from general society where other factors like fear of punishment against such things exist.
For majority of people, especially with strong ego, it is quite difficult to grasp that what they perceive as reality is only in their heads and it can be very different.

People may be born with all sorts of tendencies, but I do not believe this kind of people would exist if they had the chance not to. They are simply conditioned to be such
568  Other / Off-topic / Re: It's because of crazy people like this... on: May 15, 2011, 12:19:43 AM
I don't find it surprising in the least.  If we continue on the path we currently are this is going to be our society in not too distant future

It belongs to http://www.leaseweb.com/en

It's probably a proxy, tor node or a compromised box. I'd be looking for a tech savvy employee

573  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What to call 0.001 BTC? (5 BTC Bounty) on: May 14, 2011, 09:15:57 PM
I think creating names for 0.001, 0.00001, etc. is silly.
Just use two different units BTC and something like satoshi/bitcoinunits/bitcreds/credits representing 0.00000001 BTC.
The problem with milli/micro/nano is that when you get a bitcoin amount like 0.00245678, what random btc name do you use..?

Also it's a LOT easier to tell the size of something when it's larger because of commas and no leading zeros:
eg 34,400 BCU vs 0.00034400 BTC

That would be 2 millies, 456 mikes and 78 satoshis
or
245678 satoshis

I still think the most likely is that a browser window was left unattended while logged in.

The strange part is that it was done at about 5:30AM PST (where my office is)
There are lots of cameras at the office that I can check soon, but no one but myself has access at that time of day.

So I suspect it was done somewhere other than at the location of the mining computers.

Are your mining computers on a wireless network?

Edit: depending of what kind of logging deepbit uses, they maybe able to provide user agents, which in turn may help to narrow your search down

the advantage of defining 1 satoshi = 1 credit now, is that we never have to deal with this again

Why use the confusing term credits?  Facebook uses that term already, as do many others.  Satoshis aren't used anywhere else.

I could see that term becoming more widely used.

The equivalent to a $9.75 USD online purchase of a movie ticket would be 114.7 mSats  (megasatoshis)  (at today's  BTC/USD exchange rate of $8.50)

To send a micropayment to a blogger using YouTipIt, for instance, 3 msats (worth just about $0.25 USD)

After some more bitcoin deflation, micropayments will be priced in terms of hundreds of kSats (kilosatoshis) while more significant amounts still can use mSats.

That could work!

As much as I am a fan of SI, mega, milli and micro might be a bit confusing for general public. Why not just call it - millies, mikes and satoshis?

We are not talking about you, but about security practices and how dumb some people are revealing their personal data on public forums without even realizing it

But you are talking about me since I'm the dummy who revealed the personal data that my deepbit password is over 20 characters long.  Now, in a matter of months, if not sooner, any sufficiently crafty scriptkiddie could have access to my deepbit account.

You must be a genius

My deepbit password is now over 20 characters long with caps and symbols.
That just shortened the time to crack now didn't it?

How so?

Because now you don;t have to waste time searching all the combinations between 1 and 20 characters.

Well, sure.  But you've still got to search through at least all the 20 character combinations and the password is longer than that so it's still a pretty big task.  But, yes, you're right, it'll take less time.  Less time to make a realistic difference?  Probably not.

Yes it will. With some clever social engineering, dumpster diving and few good gpus in skilled hands your password would probably be broken in couple of months if not sooner
