Hmm...

My wallet.dat is encrypted and I did not enter my passphrase, yet my debug.log says:

Code:
2014-04-18 01:37:47 RegisterAsMasterNode
2014-04-18 01:37:47 Found unspent output equal to nValue
2014-04-18 01:37:47 Is capable master node!
2014-04-18 01:37:47 Adding myself to masternode list CTxIn(COutPoint(de7dc202c4237ec63718b461a020fde5cc8d29b6d0a18634b1965bc93c75e0c3, 0), scriptSig=)

And the "masternode list" command returns a list with my IP address on it. Huh

I take it that DarkSend can't be broken as easily as bitcoin with quantum computers (only the NSA at the moment, that I know of, has one)?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkUpZkeqhF4

~23 minutes

If that's the case, then we are talking about Darkcoin being a government grade eCash Grin

$10bn valuation  Wink

Nope.
DarkSend is about masking transaction history. (You can make your business in the dark.)
X11 (DarkCoin) is probably more resistant to brute force hacking than SHA2 (Bitcoin). But it should not make any practical difference for neither quantum computers (can crack either, no matte if one is 10x or 10000x more secure) or a traditional transistor based computer (can't crack either in a reasonable time anyway).
583  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | ASIC Resistant on: April 18, 2014, 12:03:03 AM
Yeah, it might be a bad choice of words to call theres masternodes.
May be it should have a name which does not suggest a hierarchy but reflects the purpose, for example: darknode, mixernode, dsmnode (dark send mixer/maintainer node) or something like that.

By the way, I see the development crossed the line where it's no longer safe for the average Joe to run a masternode.
You need to enter your wallet passphrase on the online machine, so now it can be easily stolen (keyloggers).

To tell the truth, I am not sure if I have the curage myself to do this (enter the passphrase without immediately sending every coins to new addresses). And I would not call myself neither a noob, nor a coward. Embarrassed

Any chance for binaries built for OpenWRT?
I think I want to give it a shot and run darkcoind on my router. May be I would be slightly more comfortable with that. It's easier to monitor because it's a lot smaller and simpler linux OS.

Q: What happens if I loose my IP address?

If i understand correctly, darksend will provide anonymity for the transaction through masternodes.

If i want to run a masternode, what i need ?

N*1000 DRK and N secure servers with unique IP address(es), (N=1,2...inf).

I love Darksend but you have to realize it will be replaced once someone starts a zero knowledge proof coin.

While I've been working on DarkSend I've been thinking about this alot. You know what the problem is with a zero knowledge proof? There's a secret key that will be attacked by governments and it will eventually be cracked. That will make every transaction that ever happened in that blockchain cleartext and allow every future transaction to also be viewed as cleartext. I'm going to venture to say the government is working on quantum computers and such crypto can be solved with shor's algorithm. When they do, they're not going to tell anyone. So it's a giant honeypot.

DarkSend is immune to such attacks, all involved crypto functions could be cracked and the mixing is still done off blockchain by the masternodes. Off blockchain means that the information is lost and that's the only way to secure it, you can't do it with cryptography.

Too much this

I think the NSA -or [insert your favorite evil mastermind's name here]- will find a way to crack almost every masternodes and log everything before they build a quantum computer.
(Windows has backdoors for sure, may be they managed to plant one or two in the Linux kernel as well.)
If not before, then after, because that quantum computer will also be able to crack the masternodes. And may be the pre-quantum-crack history won't be logged/revealed but we won't know when they fire this beast up, so we should assume they already did (and thus everything seems pointless).

Expanded the rich list with a new "vanity" feature for the block explorer at http://chainz.cryptoid.info/drk/ :

All addresses with a non-zero amount are now ranked, so you can see where you stand far beyond the TOP 100!  Grin

(keep in mind this is for individual addresses, not wallets, so secondary and change addresses are not accounted for)
I used to have 1.22% of all DRK coins like 2 weeks ago, then 1.21%, now 1.2%. Are new coins being mined that quickly? It's worrying me a bit.

After all those heavy arguments of "no big holders left", "all of the initially mined coins got redistributed by now" and "no single hands control hundreds of thousand coins", you just quietly place this replay here, saying you have 1.2% share of all DRK? LOL. Grin

I can't believe nobody tried to come up with a new Mt.Gox theory based on the infamous OpenSSL bug yet. May be people are forgetting about Gox already.
588  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: The MtGox Mexican Standoff on: April 13, 2014, 11:54:40 PM
You know, mixing popular and strong labels like "Silk Road", "FBI" and "Mt.Gox" together doesn't turn every ideas into theories.

Otherwise, I might would not find it impossible if that old 424.2424 Mt.Gox solvency proof transaction used Silk Road coins.

I tried logging in, but it didn't work, then tried changing my password, and it still didn't work.  They could find my email, to send change password message, but tried it twice and I couldn't log on.  I made my account when they first announced, but I just can't get back in Sad

In my case, it turned out I had to manually press the "Check for Deposits" button to make it update my balance. I didn't notice that before the support guy emailed me. Tongue
I can't see why they can't automatically check it once in a while.

I have a question for Evan / whoever: Does running a masternode consume the available pool of pre-generated 100 addresses, necessitating regular backups of the masternode's wallet?

I am not sure where I read it, but I remember Evan saying no, it does not.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=421615.msg6130422#msg6130422

The problem is that darkcoind won't save more than a few hundreds of keys into the wallet.dat, no matter how big keypool I ask for (it does generate all the 10000 or more keys into the thin air but saves only ~500 initially and only ~200 new after it flushes those original 500 unencrypted keys when you later encrypt the file) and I figure DarkSend will eat the keys from the keypool like a crazy addict, and thus you will either need to periodically input your password on the online server (risking your coins if somebody hacked it, even more if you do it automatically and thus you keep the password on the online machine) or copy the wallet.dat to a flash drive, refill it's keypool on an offline computer and copy it back (while your masternode is offline).

Masternodes will never use any new addresses in the keypool, unless you send funds from the node itself. They're simply the center point that all users will connect to for mixing at a specific moment in time.

Other than that, great guide.

I asked this question and Evan's answer was NO. Darksend doesn't move your coins, and thus it doesn't generate change addresses, so no need to frequently back up your wallet.dat if you don't move coins on your own.

If you place a buy order you are risking that it get filled in one trade.

Yes. In this form, it's more like a gable than an investment. If things go wild, usually the player with the highest amount of coins wins the round.

Ultimately only someone with inside access to the Cryptsy servers would be able to set up fake buy walls in this manner, and there is no evidence that this has ever happened.

So it covers basically anybody who works there (rogue) + Cryptsy itself (organized).
It's not much but still >0 chance.
593  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] DarkCoin | First Anonymous Coin | First X11 | First DGW | ASIC Resistant on: April 13, 2014, 05:24:52 PM

I always keep seeing some apparition buy walls that keep appearing and disappearing on cryptsy and mintpal. If that's any indication, it's that DARK coin has investors waiting in the wings for DARKSEND to come out of BETA before the marketing Blitz begins. This is the only coin that I've held on to for more than a month, all I can do is wait. That 112 BTC buy wall was not for decoration. People with money to pump the coin have taken notice but why pump it when it is not yet ready?

Yeah it's clear that there are some relatively heavy duty investors circling.

Or somebody wants you to think that...
I would usually bet that it's a fake wall to make you buy from the very same person who fakes the buy order but doesn't really plan on buying any more (except some small amounts to make the history charts more appealing and to clear out the small sellers from the table). But in this case, I tend to believe that some people really wish to play in big and speculate on the effect of the DarkSend feature. Or even not just speculate, but they actually plan on using the coins for real word payments (through DarkSend, when anonymity is desirable for them), not just buy at low and sell on high as soon as possible.
DarkSend has the potential to be a valuable thing. So, even if it won't work out as planned, the promise of it can increase the demand. Both fake and real (most coins only scratch the fake part).
But with that in mind, even the DarkSend feature itself could be a tool to make you buy (and will never actually work as planned). You might never know until everything becomes history.

This feels like we didn't like the "D" and simply wanted to replace it.

Well, I prefer the current D because unlike with this new "trendy" font style (seriously, a lot of shitcoin used this font style lately!) I can easily tell it's a D.

All buy order in DRK/USD are mine... Let's make some history to unblock this pair.

On it!
(Don't worry, I won't crash it to 0.01$ Grin)

Hmmm...
I signed up for an account and sent in a small amount of DRK when I wrote this but it didn't show up yet.
This is my deposit address: http://explorer.darkcoin.io/address/XciKeBoPkUUmS3RshW9j26sMYxuFdwVGJh
This address received and already transferred those coins until they finally found their resting place on a fourth one.
I've currently got a small buy order for DRK on Prelude. Has anyone used the USD/DRK or USD/BTC features yet? I was considering using it to buy but I'm a little unsure if it's available yet.

I think the market is open. There are bot sell and buy orders, as well as a brief market history.
But don't expect real volume yet if I am not the only one who's deposit takes this long to show up.

By the way, I am not planning on selling significant amounts, I just jumped in to test the exchange with a small amount.

The proposed "buyout" is a lousy deal. Putting in a tough trustee, kicking Karpeles out, and aggressive investigation into where the money went is more promising. The creditors haven't had a look at the company's records yet, or the supervisor's investigation report.

Mt. Gox supposedly has identity info on everyone who received double payments due to "transaction malleability". So clawbacks should be possible. Maybe criminal prosecutions.

Remember, if you have big bucks stuck in Mt. Gox and don't have a lawyer representing you in the Tokyo District Court, you don't get to affect the outcome.

I am not familiar with Japanese routines.
When do they usually release information to the public in cases like this?
Only after the case is completely closed (or well after) or as soon as possible?

Lens flares are not that bad (neither are good) but the texture looks more like concrete than metal to me.

Am I the only one who noticed that he wrote: "an decentralized"?
I consider my English to be relatively bad, but I think it should be "a decentralized".
The point is that a logo needs to be clear and recognisable when expressed in different media at varying resolutions and tones. Better to use two dimensions , without introducing light and interference effects.

'.. a decentralized..'  (English = decentralised ) would be correct.

Ok, the point was the a/an, so I didn't care how I should spell the word. Roll Eyes
(As I said, I have never lived amongst people who speak English.)

http://www.coindesk.com/investor-group-offers-buy-mt-gox-one-bitcoin/

“Creditors will have two options. They can either receive a prorated amount from the 200,000 bitcoins recovered by Mt. Gox equal to roughly 20 percent of their claim, or obtain an equity stake of that amount in the revitalized Mt. Gox exchange. The investor group pledged to set aside 50% of transaction fees to pay back creditors over time.”

Get ~20% back -> I would not choose this myself from these options but it's still infinitely better than nothing and I am sure some people would prefer this one (and even be happy about it).

obtain an equity stake of that amount -> Sounds better. But why not for the full amount? I would be a happy man if I got a share for the full amount of BTC I had there. But I don't like the 80% cut if I am willing to participate in a long term and high risk investment like this (the actual net return could prove to be significantly less than 20% and you definitely wait more time for that uncertain amount...).

set aside 50% of transaction fees -> 80-90% would sound a lot better. Why can't these people wait until their exchange is 100% dept-free before they start pulling out some profit?

The exchange is not re-started for free. There are loads of legal, office, administration, hardware, software, time costs which probably would eat up a chunk of any fiat or bitcoins recovered before a single exchange order can take place. It's not unreasonable for that to be recovered at the start instead of a long time later.

Yes, it can certainly look like a very reasonable thing from this point of view.
However, I don't think these are the kind of people who need to worry about how to pay their monthly phone bills.
They pay nothing for Karpeles and his Gay friend (other than that symbolic 1 BTC), so this reboot cost would be their only real investment into the new company. And I am sure that my share percentage in the company would be calculated against a significantly higher imaginary value than this reboot cost (it will probably be all the missing+remaining assets). So, it wouldn't be really fair even if they used my whole balance. But I would be still glad if they did. Not so happy if they count 20% only.
They need to please a lot of people in the early days if they want to succeed! They could start that here: offer a share for the full amount and dedicate 100% of the profits for paying debts first.
When everybody is happy and all debts are paid, they can still take profit. Or they can piss of everybody and never take any profit.
