63  Economy / Economics / Re: Martin Armstrong Discussion on: August 01, 2015, 01:49:16 PM
I will agree with Armstrong's skepticism on cryptocurrencies. We can even see that Bitcoin is becoming increasingly centralized (by design)

not by design. Capital always consolidates. Or certain structures in society generally for that matter. That's an unsolved problem. Probably unsolvable. Also if we lived in a money-less world, some would have more power and influence than others. At best we could get an ~ 80-20 distribution I guess, that seems to be the rule of thumb of balance in nature.

As with Bitcoin, transaction scripting requires a domain specific language.

like, COBOL?

What's so unnatural about people dumping toxic waste, to undercut competitors and increase trade/profits.

Hopefully, Adam Smith's invisible hand can solve the problem - ROFL!

actually... yes! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Gmds8R7lyw

One day I will need to take the time to real all of Marx to understand how he ostensibly transitioned from a correct statement of reality in the Preface to such a horrific killing field of Communism.

He did not, by and large. At least not in the way that Communism is understood today. Communism, for him, was just a philosophical concept, some kind of evolutionary (end?-) point of humanity in the future that would happen naturally (tribes -> feudalism -> capitalism -> communism) (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dialectical_materialism). The utopian kind communism is not an authoritarian system, it's rather that people would voluntary follow the lifestyle of *from each according to their ability, to each according to their needs*, as they would finally realize they can be freed from the coercion of capital, money, and property. Essentially a world where the provision of all basic needs (and beyond) is automated by robots/computers anyway, and workers have to contribute very little, if at all.

The discourse on the left is rather about what needs to happen on the road to that goal. Some kind of consensus is that changes first and foremost happen through revolutions. The right strategies have to be employed to steer revolutions (that would necessarily happen in the course of history anyway) into the right direction. Although Communism means a society without both capital and the state, some revolutionary thinkers wanted to use the state as a temporary(!) tool, and subvert it by turning the dictatorship of the bourgeois into the dictatorship of the proletariat; that was Lenin's line of thought, and he got his way, the rest is history.

the only thing that tox is missing conceptually in the current protocol is a storage facility, so that true offline messages can be implemented (right now both parties have to be online at the same time eventually for "offline" messages to be delivered). but that's the only missing thing that would be expected from a proper messenger, really.

and as soon we're talking storage layer we're in storj/maidsafe land. maidsafe claims to work without pow/blockchain. their security is based on a "proof-of-resource" and a node ranking system (there's still debate going how/if it can be secure enough). you can run a farmer though on your 24/7 online desktop box to provide storage space for others, to earn some of the integrated safecoins. but your devices will run under your same account, so apps could provide very much convenience in such a system, much more so than in today's internet/web where you need to maintain hundreds of logins/passwords.

73  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Secure messengers: are there any? on: July 24, 2015, 01:18:10 PM
you don't need proof-of-work for a p2p messenger. maybe a little bit of hashcash to prevent spam. but even that would be just one of several possibilities.

tox is conceptually fine as it is, it just needs more developers, and on a more professional level at that.

the long-term solution would be all-purpose integrated p2p systems like storj or maidsafe.
74  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Secure messengers: are there any? on: July 23, 2015, 02:58:57 PM

that's a lie because in actuality 0 people use retroshare

that's the point, to make it look like that from outside Wink
75  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Secure messengers: are there any? on: July 23, 2015, 01:54:53 PM
I use XMPP+OTR (with Pidgin on Desktop and Xabber on Android), Tox (qTox on Desktop), TextSecure, Bitmessage, and RetroShare on a daily basis. Each serve their (different) purpose. I'd like to see the all-in-one solution, but oh well...
76  Economy / Economics / Re: A Resource Based Economy on: July 23, 2015, 11:45:37 AM
Both sides (anarcho-capitalism and anarcho-communism) have flaws in their line of arguing.

It's true what Marxists argue that private property rights can, at the end of the day, only be ensured by force, i.e. police and military. At the end of the day, the nation state (which libertarians claim to despise) can be seen as the organization that provides these services. Don't like your state? Go somewhere else. We have almost 200 nation states. Plenty of choice. Free market at work! Yay!

Anarcho-communism on the other hand expects all people to adopt a set of certain values like solidarity and equality. The New Man. But there is no guarantee for this to occur. Discourse in left ideologies are often about the revolutionary strategies of how to achieve this goal.

If you think long enough, you come to the conclusion that we already have "anarchy" today, and the interplay of forces would always arrive at the structures of nation states, which have to both cooperate (trade) and compete, with slightly varying sets of societal norms and rules.

Maidsafe and Bitshares listed as anonymous is almost as funny as Ripple getting the highest rating on decentralization.

in which way is MaidSafe not enough anonymous?
