66  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: casascius and other physical bitcoins is a fraudulent idea on: November 30, 2013, 05:51:01 AM
Following a good will Casascius apparently opened the pandora box. Now people are really believe that the sealing proves that the physical bitcoin is secure. But of course it is not. A producer of a physical note or a coin can copy and preserve the private key. This situation is so strange. I bet that if this hysteria wouldn't decline we will face a wave of fraud associated with a physical pseudosecured coins in a future.

It would be better if Casascius spend the same amount of effort populating the idea that only self printed paper wallets are secure. Every such cold storage obtained from a second party as a present, gift or a payment should be immediately transferred to the safer wallet because private key could be copied and preserved by a grantor. Tamper-evident seal in this case doesn't provide the needed level of security because the private key could be copied before the sealing was applied on a coin.

Shame on you Casascius   Sad

Casascius has had options for a long time to purchase 2 factored coins, in which trust in not necessary on the customer's part. Casascius has ever been a stalwart supporter of this community and Bitcoin. He has done more to further Bitcoin and its advancement than few others. Look at nearly every news story, every Reddit post, they feature his coins. He has given the non-technical person something the wrap their head around in terms of bitcoin. As a prop, they have been invaluable to me when explaining it to others.

Money is not his main objective, never was.

This is just my opinion, and why I personally never bothered with the 2 factor coins when purchasing from him.

68  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: uBTC is better than mBTC, and here's why. on: November 26, 2013, 08:25:54 AM
This is really unfortunate because I just switched my pricing to mBTC...
69  Economy / Economics / Re: Economics of transactions in Bitcoin is a fail on: November 26, 2013, 08:04:47 AM
Processing time and transaction costs are becoming a real issue. Here's the current list of Mt. Gox transactions not confirmed for 2 hours. No-fee transactions take a long time, and now, so do 0.001BTC fee transactions.  It looks like the fee required to get fast processing is now 0.002BTC, or about $0.42.

Processing a debit card transaction via ACH typically costs $0.34 for a small merchant, and you get a confirmation in seconds.

Bitcoin is too slow for retail.

How do you explain that subway franchise owner accepting them if they are too slow?

I send an email confirmation of order at 1 network confirm. I could easily do it at 0 confirms, were I a brick and mortar business selling products like sandwiches that are worth less than the effort it would take to reverse a 0 confirmation transaction for a $5 sandwich.

So even in the incredibly unlikely event someone reverses their $5 0 confirm transaction, over the course of the day it would have more than paid for itself in debit fee savings.

72  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: CSPAN3 Live: WATCH Virtual Currency Hearing on: November 19, 2013, 11:19:19 PM
Every time terrorism was mentioned I screamed "Terrorism!" and took a drink.

If by "drink" you mean "alcoholic beverage", can you still walk?

I maintain.

After watching today and yesterday's panels with the senate the over-all consensus is that everyone acknowledges Bitcoin's merits, which I think is really positive.

There is definitely some "I'll have my cake and eat it too" mentality with the notion of enacting "smart regulation" which I think is absurd. Bizarrely, it was brought up in today's hearing that the fact that Bitcoin is unregulated has somehow hampered its adoption.

It's the very fact that the market is unregulated and free that Bitcoin has achieved the success it has.

74  Economy / Marketplace / Re: [ANN] Recalescence Coins Gold 1000mBTC rounds on: November 13, 2013, 07:15:21 PM
why not just say 1btc rounds instead of 1000 mBTC rounds

Because 1000 mBTC sounds like more :p

When 1mBTC is worth $1, having a coin denominated at 1,000 mBTC rather than 1BTC is more indicative of its value. That was my reasoning anyway when I chose to use mBTC as the denomination.

We finished the photo op for the next coin design last weekend, here's a preview:

This will obviously not be the final artwork of the coin, as it needs to be rendered in line art suitable for the mint to sculpt. Background elements are absent as well.

To say I'm looking forward to completing this design is an understatement.

The website should be complete in a day or two. This will allow us to offer multiple products and provide an official order stream for bulk purchases with discounts included.

I'll keep this thread updated. Cheers Smiley

Unfortunately, there are still some bugs to be worked out with the new site, which means the 2014 coins will not be available for pre-sale tomorrow.

I'll update this thread once everything is ironed out and ready.

79  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Bitcoins mining 2013 on: November 04, 2013, 01:55:21 PM
What is ROI standfor? Return On Investments?

Yes.

I think it may be premature to say that you would NEVER ROI with current mining rigs.. I think the question is what is an acceptable time frame for your ROI, and this is subjective.

A few years ago I was mining on several different computers on Slush's pool. At the time my  mining was not profitable, as I was spending much -much- more on electricity than I was getting in BTC. I mined about 8 BTC, which was worth about $40, and it cost me at least $100 in power alone. Now, had I held onto those coins, I would have seen a substantial ROI -a few years later.

So really it depends if you see long term use and adoption of Bitcoin to justify the risk of making the investment in the gear.

80  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is Satoshi Dead? on: November 04, 2013, 01:45:06 PM
There is no point in asking this question though. We can only speculate because we have yet to confirm is actual ID.
My point is that we should by pass that step, and assume death. If he returns it will be cooler that way.

Now that Bitcoin is becoming a world-wide phenomenon I highly doubt he will ever return judging by how secretive and private he was when used to be active in the community. He was not a person who craved attention or admiration from others. He had a job to do. It does not surprise me that he left when Bitcoin became a self-sustaining community of enthusiasts and developers, his job was complete at that point. I like to imagine he is off somewhere else doing good in the world, like feeding ducks, at least if he's not been hit by a bus I mean.
