61  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Reddit Bitcoin Centralizes All Bitcoin News on: October 17, 2014, 02:41:59 PM

However, this doesn't mean that you can violate reddit's spam rules and complain when they ban you, as is their clearly stated policy.

You then double broke the rules buying alt accounts and trying to spam further?

Seriously, have you even read the rules of the site?  It sounds to me as if you still haven't, despite all this.

Yes, we broke the rules by posting our own articles there... I guess Coin Desk only has their readers post their articles there, and nobody from Coin Desk has ever themselves submitted an article.

As I wrote, we never received a warning that we violated any rules. My account was banned while I had paid ads as well running on the site. I had no idea the rules were so strict there.

We only bought a Reddit account off Fiverr to verify that our URL is indeed blocked. AND my IP address and any IP associated with me is also blocked. Not sure what the danger was in buying a Reddit account when our URL was already permanently blocked?

We never once got a complaint from Reddit Bitcoin. It was a top level moderator who banned us and knew nothing about Bitcoin.

Read about Reddit bans, many people get permanently banned because they disagree with some random moderator.

You have to keep in mind that Reddit is accountable to the people who read on their site and to the people who run the site - not to people who want to use their site to build traffic.  The very fact that you want to do that puts you firmly in a category where they are not going to care what you think about their policies.  They don't have to warn you, they don't have to be fair to you, they don't have to be consistent - and they are not wrong for doing any of this.  They can do whatever they want with their site - it's theirs!

Pick any site with user submitted content and more than one moderator and I can find you posts elsewhere from people complaining they were banned just because they disagree.  That's fine.  Sites can do what they want!

Reddit is just not that into you!
62  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Bitminter bitcoin mining pool - Pays TxFees, Merged Mining, Fair PPLNS rewards on: October 17, 2014, 02:28:36 PM
Hey, Doc, I just wanted to say thanks for this very educational post.  I'm still thinking about it, days later.  Part math, part psychology, and a great lesson in thinking rationally.

Here's how the psychology of variance works.

The situation: you work for one hour and get nothing, then you work another hour and get double of normal pay.

People perceive this in different ways.

Overly negative person (very common): "OMG! I worked a whole hour and got nothing!". Those people can earn millions and still feel they are losing, because there was that one little thing which was not perfect. That's why they paid a 10% fee to mine PPS at Deepbit. After months of mining it felt like nothing had gone wrong, there was not a single moment with horrible pay. That was their only focus and they were happy. Overall they got the lowest mining payouts in the history of Bitcoin.

Overly positive person (common with gamblers): "I got double pay! I really hit the jackpot this time!". These people can gamble away their entire life savings and still feel that they are winning, as long as they get a small win every once in a while in between the huge losses. That's how casinos make a lot of money. They let players win small sums frequently. That keeps them hooked and makes them gamble away all the money they can get their hands on. Even the casino making it look like the player "almost won" counts as a win in the head of some players.

The reality? Overall you got average pay. This is where rational thinking is, and this is where you want to be.

Notice how those other two people looked at only part of the picture and then got very emotional about it, while you looked at the whole picture and stayed rational. This difference is important. There are entire businesses built around taking advantage of the psychological weaknesses of those other two people.

No bids.

Auctioning a Litecoin to the highest bid in Bytecoin - bid before 00:00 UTC.
64  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: [LTC] [BTE] Buy Litecoin with Bytecoin (24 hour auctions) on: October 16, 2014, 09:57:10 PM
Two hours to go - pick up a Litecoin!  Really cheap, apparently.  At this point, a bid of only 1.0 BTE would win.
65  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Reddit Bitcoin Centralizes All Bitcoin News on: October 16, 2014, 09:45:45 PM
Going to re-analyze a few of your statements:

What we discovered is many people are only going to Reddit Bitcoin for news.

That's what they want to do!  And apparently Reddit's policies (which you call censorship and they call spam prevention) are what their readers want, because apparently they are fantastically successful.

If they are making a mistake, their readers will leave them.

Quote
Reddit Bitcoin is heavily censored, and is now an additional central point of failure for Bitcoin.

This could only be true if there were something other than market forces responsible for Reddit's success.  They are regulated by their market, just like all of the rest of us.

Even in a non-profit venture, you are regulated by your market.

I think we need to get the news back on Bitcoin Talk!

Now that I agree with!  I have no idea why people would rather go to Reddit than here.  I get my news from here and a handful of other places, none of which is Reddit.

But really I seem to eventually hear most of what I need to hear, even if it takes awhile to get from Reddit to here.

What I am hearing here is a big entitlement mentality - you feel entitled to have Reddit (a private entity) treat you "fairly" (in your opinion of fair).  You feel entitled to get readers and make a site, even though you really don't know how to do so.  You feel entitled to build your site with assistance from other sites - at the expense of them having to limit themselves and not take actions that they feel are in their own best interest.

How is Reddit limited by my site? If I submit an article about Bitcoin to the Bitcoin sub-reddit I fail to see who was hurt.

Like I said, if it is a poor article it will get down votes, and not many people will see it. Why do you need a moderator to tell you what to read there?

And I admit I have no idea how to create a Bitcoin news site. That is what I am trying to figure out.

The problem for my site is we have no clue how to get traffic without Reddit... I am open to suggestions.

I think you need to give the readers you have incentive to stay and incentive to attract new readers.  There is no advertising technique better than word of mouth.  People talk to each other, and they don't just talk on Reddit.  (As I said, I don't read Reddit at all.)

As for limiting Reddit, I mean you are wishing that they would limit themselves by refraining from taking an action that is perfectly within their rights to take.  They feel that certain rules about URL postings are in their best interests and the best interests of their readers.  Apparently many of their readers agree!!  There's nothing wrong with wishing they did differently, asking them to do differently, asking other people to support you by also asking them to do differently - but if that's the only plan you've got, I wouldn't hold out a lot of optimism.  That's also pretty lame.

Basically you need to educate yourself and learn how to attract readers, rather than relying on Reddit.

In fact, I think you should consider Reddit to be your competition: what have they got that you haven't got?  Start supplying that, and then some.  Make friends with people who have built high traffic sites, and learn from them.

It is my personal opinion that if you build a good site, people will come, and that people who focus overly hard on promotion of the site rather than building the quality of the site probably don't have a lot of quality there.  I'm not always correct, but it has been a good rule of thumb for me.

Yea, we have no idea where to get readers from now

You have no plan to get readers from other than at the expense of Reddit.

How does Reddit get readers?  Maybe you should do what they do.

Yea, we have no idea where to get readers from now

How are you doing at retaining the readers you already have?
69  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Vircurex is *still* holding stolen coins. Where's the outrage? on: October 16, 2014, 07:19:53 PM
No investigation, no outrage, nobody even posting about it.

There was a ton of outrage and posting.  Upset posts continue to this day.

They can't release funds they don't have.

Some of us just decided to take our licks and move on.

You are welcome to investigate if you want to invest the energy involved.  The rest of us are under no obligation to subsidize the investigation.

The announcement about interest is not new at all.
70  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Reddit Bitcoin Centralizes All Bitcoin News on: October 16, 2014, 07:08:55 PM
Do you think it is a problem that people are getting are only getting news from Reddit Bitcoin?

Do I think that it is a problem for people to choose where they get their Bitcoin news from?  No, not at all.

I don't use Reddit, but apparently a lot of people do.  They make the choice that is right for them.  Reddit's moderators work to constantly adjust to attract and retain their readers, and if the readers don't like the block for your site, they will vote with their feet.  It's possible they like the current Reddit rules very much.  Noone is making them use it.

I suggest you work to add more value to your site.  I've found several sources of Bitcoin news without ever using Reddit.  If you are valuable, word will get around.

the most grandiose tales of bloody honor and courage in killing ones own fellow man over a finite resource at the behest of the state, paid for by state coercion

Fixed that for you, providing a hint as to how Bitcoin will help diminish wars.

Just curious, why did you go to the trouble of hunting up an illustration for your post?
73  Other / Off-topic / Re: Bitcoin is satanic and Satoshi is lucifer! My uncle claims! on: October 16, 2014, 02:55:05 PM
Oh please if Bitcoin is Satanic then it kind of makes every other currency in the world Satanic too. After all the other currencies were created with the same notion but things changed.

That is a brilliant insight.

In fact, the other currencies are much more evil and fit the idea better, because they were all implemented with force and coercion.  Nobody is coerced into using Bitcoin.

A cursory glance at Revelation 13-14 reveals that receiving the "mark of the beast" includes worshiping the beast, which would explain why the mark would be anathema to the monotheistic faith of Christianity.  There is no worship involved in using Bitcoin (at least not for most of us!)  State currency, on the other hand, is instituted by governments that are fond of receiving reverence and allegiance and behavior and emotions that could be easily described as "worship":

http://www.lewrockwell.com/lrc-blog/how-dare-they-adulterate-our-nationalist-idolatry/

So, honestly, which form of currency fits the "mark of the beast" idea more?

Now I am reading through the 20 page long research paper by the sociologist James.J.Huges..

the paper argues this sort of tension between technology(bitcoin) and religion could morph into violence in the coming future!

THE POLITICS OF TRANSHUMANISM AND THE
TECHNO-MILLENNIAL IMAGINATION, 1626–2030

There doesn't need to be any violence if both sides commit to the non-aggression principle.

Were you aware of libertarianism as an ideology common to many of the early Bitcoin proponents and adopters?  Satoshi himself referenced it:
http://satoshi.nakamotoinstitute.org/emails/cryptography/12/

Perhaps you could have mentioned libertarianism to your uncle instead of transhumanism and he would have found it more palatable.

Many Christians find libertarianism and the non-aggression principle completely compatible with (and even implied by) their faith.

Well, no bids, so I'll keep the first Litecoin for now.

But another auction began at 2014-10-16T00:00:00 UTC, and runs for 24 hours.

Make your bids - I need green octagons!

I can't believe no one took that username till now.  What is the price you are looking for?

He's selling "B¡tcoin," not "Bitcoin."  The difference is he's using an upside-down exclamation point instead of an i.  There may be other differences, too.

It's just like selling a business.
78  Economy / Invites & Accounts / Re: Selling Bitcointalk Account. on: October 15, 2014, 06:06:21 PM
I wonder why is this even allowed here!

Because if it doesn't take place here in the open, it will take place somewhere else without most users being aware of it - so in short, it's allowed because there is no effective way of stopping it. But users engaged in these activities will still often get negative trust (as, in my opinion, they should).
admins can simply perhaps check on the ips used to log in to accs and know if they were changed?

So I can only log in from home?  Or only from work?  Or only on my phone?  Or my hotel?

I'll buy 1 LTC for 250k BCN

No, that's a totally different coin.

Never thought of that, is it true?

Read the Satoshi whitepaper and find out how it works!
