Quote from: Satoshi
Section 11 calculates the worst case under attack. Typically, 5 or
10 blocks is enough for that. If you're selling something that
doesn't merit a network-scale attack to steal it, in practice you
could cut it closer.

84  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / [LTC] [BTE] Buy Litecoin with Bytecoin (24 hour auctions) on: October 14, 2014, 10:51:19 PM

Hi, folks, Walter Rothbard here, Bytecoin enthusiast.

I need to build my stock of Bytecoin, so I'm going to be running one-day auctions, selling 1.0 LTC per day to the highest bidder in Bytecoins.

The current auction began at 2014-10-25T00:00:00 UTC and ends at 2014-10-26T00:00:00 UTC.  As of this update, there are no bids!

After that another Litecoin goes up for sale, taking bids for 24 hours, terminating at 00:00:00 UTC.  I'll do this for several days, selling 1 Litecoin per day.

Place your bids by posting on this thread.  I'll contact the winners by PM with an address to send payment, after which I'll send the Litecoin.  I'll update this post to declare the winners and keep track of payment status.  Bids for each day's new auction can begin immediately at 00:00:00 UTC.

Make sure you understand where you are relative to the UTC timezone so you can understand when each auction starts and ends.

I've conducted a set of auctions like this before, if anyone wants to see the history:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=184481.0
I also did a similar set of auctions for BBQCoin:

85  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The problem with bitcoin is buying bitcoin on: October 14, 2014, 06:12:07 PM
The Bitcoin economy is very much like a new country.

When you visit a foreign country you have to exchange your money if you want to spend.  Depending on where you are going, that might be easier or harder.

As time goes by, people will figure out ways to better serve the market for those who need their money exchanged going into this country.  Those people who serve that market better will be rewarded.

but anyone who assumes this issue away is engaging in massive self deception.

Meanwhile, people who raise the issue but expect other people to do something about it aren't really contributing!

We don't have a shortage of issue-identifiers; we have a shortage of problem solvers.

Contribute to solving the problem and you can likely make a bundle of wealth for your contribution.

I was with you until you said that last part.

What I'm saying is that anybody who thinks they know how to make it easier to buy Bitcoin can probably earn some money by selling Bitcoin in this hypothetical easy-to-buy manner.  After all, if they improve convenience over the existing offerings, it should be easy for them to win customers over from the competition.

What I'm point out is that it's not nearly so easy as people think it is.

88  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Charlie Shrem is scamming me, watch out on: October 14, 2014, 02:52:15 PM
in case I lose access to any of my accounts here or elsewhere :

the receiving address will stay the same, I don't intend to change it.

can somebody please quote this post, thanx
Charlie has, on multiple occasions wanted to confirm that he was sending the bitcoin to the correct address prior to doing so. I think you are being overly dramatic and are trying to make a bigger deal out of a situation that is not a big deal. From what I can tell Charlie honored his end of the agreement, and you wanted to get paid sooner, and opened a scam accusation as a result.

please bug out, you don't have the complete info on this story,
you don't know all that was said behind the scene

I have been patient and very polite
Sorry you don't get to cry out to the community about a "scam" and tell them to "bug out" when you don't like their reply. He is right. The failure here was of both parties to set a definite end date for the debt to be paid BEFORE the trade was conducted. You both hold culpability for this crappy deal.

Yep - when you conduct these things in public, we all get the chance to form our own opinions on the persons involved and how they handle things.  And many of us are not shy about expressing out opinions.

if you do not change and do not begin to live for each other

What an unfair and hypocritical thing to demand of people.  I recognize your message is tongue in cheek, but what you are describing is slavery.  People do not own other people.

lets kill him

Well, that would certainly be a non-proportional response!

Actually that's not entirely true.  Under the present legal situation, people are in fact owned.  And they currently live for their rulers.

91  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Who made CGMiner? on: October 13, 2014, 01:53:16 PM
Question, what program Satoshi used before you made CGMiner? Sure Satoshi he tested his bitcoin program whit some early bitcoin try outs?
Satoshi had disappeared before I made cgminer but was around when JGarzik created cpu miner. There is generation code in the bitcoind client that mined on the CPU but it is no longer built into the client since CPU mining is pointless. It has actually been postulated that in the early days Satoshi had his own custom mining software based on the unique pattern of the blocks he generated with it. I forget the details but there are other forum threads discussing it.

I believe the generation code is still built and used in testnet, if anyone wants to try that out.

If you live in the US, Coinbase is super easy.

My 74 year old mother was able to buy bitcoins through them using her phone.

This is true, but I would like a second coinbase type company for the USA.

Circle!
Circle is still very new and have not proven themselves to be trustworthy yet, not have they proven that they can both properly secure their bitcoin and their customer information

Wouldn't any other solution that came in today have the same problem?
93  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is stealing bitcoins illegal? on: October 13, 2014, 01:26:21 PM
This is one of the major factors which is driving away the average person from using Bitcoins. If Bitcoins can be stolen from places like Mt Gox and Sheep Marketplace, then they can be stolen from just anyone else, despite whatever precautions they take.

If Bitcoins can be stolen from places like Mt Gox and Sheep Marketplace that didn't take all possible precautions ... that somehow means that no matter what precautions you take you can't keep them secure?

I'm not following that.

Can you acquire vircurex but not acquire vircurex's debt?  Because I imagine you would start out wiped out.

Maybe you could license vircurex's code base.
96  Other / Archival / Re: closed on: October 13, 2014, 01:22:13 PM
I am thinking about BUYING Vircurex and making it work again, gaining trust and making it a actually GOOD, SECURE and TRUSTWORTHY exchange.

Whose with me?

I am being serious.

If that happened I would probably be with you as a customer.  I miss Vircurex!

I don't want power over anyone. In exchange, I don't want anyone to have power over me. I know that is a lot to ask.

I hereby agree to this arrangement between myself and Holliday.

And salute you as kin.

Threads like this make me wish Dread Pirate Roberts had gotten further with his book club before being imprisoned.

99  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: CKPOOL - Open source pool/database/proxy/passthrough/library in c for Linux on: October 13, 2014, 02:14:52 AM
Does this work for altcoins?

The author said this:

Q: Altcoins?
A: The author has no interest in support for anything but bitcoin. You are free to modify the code yourself as you see fit, but no altcoin support will ever be merged into the master ckpool code.

Personally, I had no trouble getting it to work.
