601  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Nxt :: descendant of Bitcoin on: May 21, 2015, 11:33:34 AM
What are my options for storing NXT outside of a centralized exchange?

In the blockchain through the client.

If you don't want to download the blockchain, try mynxt.info or mofowallet.com. mynxt.info also have andoid and iOS apps.

I'm very careful about what I install on my computer.  Can I install NRS in a sandbox somehow?  I suppose I could run it as a very unprivileged user.  I use Linux BTW.

I think a web wallet is too risky.

Would Jay be a good choice?
602  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Which coins are best suited for decentralized apps? on: May 21, 2015, 11:16:01 AM
Nxt seems to be your best bet at the moment as they call it "plugins". nxtbubble.com is going to be one of the plugins within the wallet.

So it's NXT's plugin system that makes it the best choice for this?

Are there any NXT plugins besides NXTBubble?

What sort of limitations does the plugin system have?
603  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Tracking down missing XRP on: May 21, 2015, 10:47:20 AM
I'm trying to track down some XRP I bought and then apparently lost in 2013.  I know the amount and date of transfer.  Can I find out what address I transferred it to?  It was a Ripple wallet address but I can't seem to log in at the old Ripple login.
604  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [SOFTWARE SALE LIVE] FACTOM - Introducing Honesty to Record-Keeping on: May 20, 2015, 11:23:59 PM
I'd like to know a bit more about the 32 federated servers.  How is the required "user support" obtained which allows someone to run one of the federated servers?  How often are the federated servers re-assigned?

Once the blockchain is live, are there any options for storing Factoids besides on an exchange or with the non-GUI wallet?

Can anyone help with this?
605  Other / MultiBit / Re: Multibit issues on: May 20, 2015, 07:04:52 PM
I deleted the .spvchain file and that looks like it's going to do it.
606  Other / MultiBit / Multibit issues on: May 20, 2015, 06:49:21 PM
I got a blockchain error in multibit so I did a "Reset Blockchain and Transaction" and now it just says "Connecting...." for the past 10 minutes with no progress in the bar.  Has anyone else seen this?

Which coins are best suited as a framework for totally decentralized apps and why?  Not centralized apps that communicate with a blockchain but completely decentralized apps.
609  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XCP] Counterparty - Pioneering Peer-to-Peer Finance - Official Thread on: May 20, 2015, 02:05:35 AM
I sent some XCP to a new BTC address and blockscan.com shows the XCP there but none of the BTC dust shows up in Multibit.  What does that mean?
610  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][CHA] Chancecoin, SuperNET core coin for betting in a decentralized casino on: May 20, 2015, 01:51:17 AM
Is there a CHA block explorer?
none CHA block explorer.

How can I move my CHA from a BTC address to an exchange?
611  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Can stolen XRP be recovered? on: May 20, 2015, 12:44:20 AM
Can I recover my username with my secret key so that I only need to backup my secret key?

You recover your wallet with your secret key, yes.  Think of it as your back up.

I just tried that but it seemed to require my username as well.  Are you sure the username isn't required in order to recover?

I'd like to transfer some of my XCP to another address.  I believe the only way I can do that is by importing the current address's private key into Counterwallet which will then sweep all of my XCP into Counterwallet.  Then I have to return the remaining XCP back to my original address, and then I feel weird because I've put my address's private key online.  Is there a better way to move XCP?
614  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Can stolen XRP be recovered? on: May 19, 2015, 09:32:34 PM
I'm trying to decide whether to store my XRP in Poloniex or RippleTrade.  I would rather keep it in Poloniex but I can imagine it's completely safe in RippleTrade since it's run by Ripple Labs.  I'm not clear on how XRP works but I know it's centralized to some degree.  Does that mean I'd be able to recover my XRP if it were stolen from Poloniex?

Do we know how much MAID is held by the Mastercoin people and if they have dumped any yet?

Any theories on the NXT price increase today?
617  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XCP] Counterparty - Pioneering Peer-to-Peer Finance - Official Thread on: May 19, 2015, 12:04:19 AM
Bear with me guys, I'm trying to think this through....

Why would anyone want to build an application that stores data on a blockchain?  It can be an extremely secure database, but any centralized third party service that reads/writes to/from that blockchain is naturally susceptible to tampering.  What good is an ultra-secure database if read/write access to it is not any more secure than the centralized services of today?
618  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XCP] Counterparty - Pioneering Peer-to-Peer Finance - Official Thread on: May 18, 2015, 11:16:16 PM
How big of a concern is it that Bitcoin could build Counterparty-esque functionality directly into their protocol?
It's not possible. Bitcoin can't escrow value, which means that you can't build (decentralized) smart contracts directly onto it. That's the value of XCP. It can actually act as a value escrow.

Very interesting, thank you.  Is any data stored in the Counterparty network or is everything stored on the Bitcoin blockchain?

EDIT: Is escrow critical in some, most, or all of Counterparty's functions?
619  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XCP] Counterparty - Pioneering Peer-to-Peer Finance - Official Thread on: May 18, 2015, 10:39:47 PM
Another thing that's been bugging me.  What is the incentive to run a Counterparty node?  If there is no strong incentive, how can we hope to have a strong network?  It would be like a secure database (Bitcoin) with an otherwise vulnerable application stack (Counterparty).
620  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XCP] Counterparty - Pioneering Peer-to-Peer Finance - Official Thread on: May 18, 2015, 10:32:27 PM
How feasible would it be for the Bitcoin devs to duplicate Counterparty's functionality without the XCP coin?

It's not possible.

What would make it impossible?  I was just digging around and found this post from over a year ago with the opposite answer to the same question:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=395761.msg5467658#msg5467658

That person is wrong. I'll let someone who's more technical take the question from here if they have any interest. I'd not worry about it though, if that's what you're doing, worrying about an investment you made in XCP.

Can you tell me in conceptual terms why it can't be done?  Why can counterpartyd do something that bitcoind can't do?  That doesn't make sense to me.
