601  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The UK Public & Bitcoin on: April 22, 2013, 10:28:43 PM
http://blockchain.info/wallet/deposit-methods

UK bank transfer, barclays pingit, and sofort

Not any more, currently there is no way to add funds from UK on blockchain.info.

And yet they (erroneously it seems) still show Sofort as a legit UK funding option. *sigh*

I think I mentioned that before, I signed up only to find out that they do not allow UK deposits anymore, it seems they have conveniently forgotten to update.

To be fair most websites will happily advertise all sorts of unrelated ads such weightless scams and other shady products, you could argue that forum management have no obligation to decide what is right and what is wrong for you. Personally I would only advertise products that I believe in but what we are seeing on these forums is no different from 98% of the other ad supported sites on the web. Those who click ads and impulse buy without even researching are asking to get scammed to be honest.
603  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Island/City and More on: April 22, 2013, 07:15:47 PM
I can imagine a ton of Somalian pirates heading for Bitcoin Island, and Taxmen lol.
604  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The UK Public & Bitcoin on: April 22, 2013, 07:08:14 PM
IIRC Max Kieser said he's trying to build a new London exchange.

Seem to recall this also, has there been any news regarding any other possible uk exchanges that may be on the horizon?

Not that I've heard of.  Which is a shame as an exchange with access to free and instant UK internet banking transfers would have a lot of business.

I thought I would bold this just in case people with the capital are weighing up the pros and cons, don't let size and modesty fool you in regards to the UK! Wink
605  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Which wallet do you use? on: April 22, 2013, 04:39:34 PM
Yeah I have never and never will consider storing large sums in online wallets without an imminent transaction in mind. I was mainly curious about the offline wallets as I have never seen them mentioned in threads before.

I can build a scale model of an island using a bucket, water and some sand,  count me in.
607  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mars One: Bitcoins in space? on: April 22, 2013, 04:07:03 PM
The Mars One project is looking to build a community on Mars in 2023.  Presumably the people of Mars would not be governed by a country on Earth and as the community thrives they will need their own currency as a medium of exchange.  Since Bitcoin is also not backed by governments of any country then surely this is the obvious choice of currency for the people of Mars.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-22146456

Mar One project is so crazy that i love it. I doubt it will turn into something other than a huge database of crazy geeks. Still, i love it.

Let's play:

I imagine an early mars community to be strongly governed by the mission organizers in a corporativist/dictatorship style. In any case, when i learned about bitcoin i thought, "ey, these are the famous credits i've seen used on every scifi book". A non physical currency should prevail in out of Earth colonies, where storage space and material resources will be scarce while not energy.

Depending on orbit, 4-20 minutes/light is the distance between Earth and Mars, that's pretty laggy. We shall need to create something like the "Solar System Monetary Network" that operates in huge timelapses. Pluto to Earth is 320 minutes/light, so we might need something that can handle that for the "Last Frontier Space Station" orbiting Pluto. Then the SSMN could be used to link the different currencies, so say, a Marscoin could be send to the Plutocoin system while the Marscoin network remains fast and local.

 Wink

Civil war on Mars, you saw it here first lol.

  • Multibit
  • Armory
  • Electrum

Mobile Wallet
  • Bitcoin Wallet

Web Wallet
  • Blockchain
  • Paytunia
  • BIPS
  • Coinbase
609  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How do you guys explain Bitcoins to a Non-Bitcoin User? on: April 22, 2013, 10:04:22 AM
I just compare BTC value to FIAT, don't mention mining as that will be a step to far for most people.
610  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Bitcoin Condoms on: April 22, 2013, 09:22:40 AM
I'm throwing money at my monitor but it's not working!

So who is on the list then?
1.
2.
3.

You should just make a bunch and list them on Amazon using the Bitpay/Fulfillment by Amazon plugin. I think they would sell like hotcakes and you would have how much to lose at most if none sold? Could start yourself a fun little business.

Yeah I was planning on setting up a business selling Bitcoin products anyway, which is why I have already stocked most of the equipment; I can print onto anything. Thanks for suggesting that that plugin, never heard of it before.

Free Speech > Nitpicks.
It's not about restricting free speech. If you (don't) support someone, that's fine. All I ask is not to post replies that add nothing to the conversation.

Exactly.

*facepalm* I am out of here.
613  Other / Off-topic / Re: Need company logo - will pay in bitcoin! on: April 21, 2013, 11:40:04 PM
I was interested until you said  ฿0.10, how about BTC1.10, and that is a discount price for a typical logo lol?

Yes, exactly this.  Even Vircurex was offering 2 BTC a little while ago for their logo competition.

A realistic offer would be about 3BTC, I would not even bother copy/pasting an old logo for BTC0.10. I guess some will apply considering people even use those "giveway" sites that send like BTC0.0000234 lol.
614  Other / Off-topic / Re: Need company logo - will pay in bitcoin! on: April 21, 2013, 11:30:43 PM
I'm looking for a dark, crisp, sleek, and professional logo for my indie game development business. The company name is Aphotic Pixels.

This is the one we are currently using:

Details
-Must be in three sizes (pixels): 25-50, 75-100, 300-400.
-Must have the company name in the image.
-Must be in .png format.
-Should be dark, use a black and white color scheme.

Please submit your photos before April 26. The winner will receive ฿0.10.

Thank you, and good luck! Smiley

615  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Bitcoin Condoms - Cryptocondom Collection on: April 21, 2013, 11:22:31 PM
Marketing condoms to Bitcoin users is like marketing protractors to football players.

Bitcoin users are the Playboys of the future, girls will blush when they whip out their wallet.  Grin
616  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Police State? on: April 21, 2013, 09:22:26 PM
I personally feel we (all) do live in a Police state although the US is a more obvious Western example comparative to the British system. I think the issue with the US is that the military plays such a huge role in the economy, that means lots of military grade equipment for officials and criminal organisations.

not a late night movie about an Arab bomber we sent to a third world nation to be tortured.

Out of curiosity, how much income have you received from publicly-funded salaries in your life?

zero.  I work for myself.  I have had contracts wit universities, but those were private institutions.  is it so hard to believe there is a thinking American?  I mean we did invent... the lightbulb, assembly line, rifles, airplanes, the computer, the Internet....

You could argue those were actually invented by the British Wink
617  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Building the next generation FAST CRYPTO CURRENCY MINING MACHINE on: April 21, 2013, 08:56:35 PM
I could design a cool looking rig if needed, depending on components I could design to help airflow and other features needed. Below is sample of my BitPhantom mining rig design concept, I am currently working on a more lightweight consumer version. http://www.owenprescott.com/blog-bitcoin-mining-hardware.php

618  Other / Meta / Re: Rating System for forum users. on: April 21, 2013, 08:30:52 PM
Why do people always say "I don't want this reputation issue to turn into a popularity contest..."?

Reputation *is* a popularity contest.

Not really, although maybe we see popularity as two different things. An active user who is friendly and who comes across genuine in posts is different from a snide user making fun of other newer users yet who is popular among their a clique of friends. I have not encountered this on these forums but I would not trust all popular people in that sense lol.

Cool. What manufacturing background do you have?

I'm a mathematician by trade, but I've done a lot of VLSI for several aerospace projects. A friend of mine is an electrical engineer who works for Intel and consults for Achronix. We'd start an ARM style company that develops the IP behind the chips and licenses the technology to merchants for commercial use and allows free personal use.

This is interesting, check out my 'BitPhantom' design ideas in my sig. As a designer I could do branding, design 3d products, code websites and so on. I have been thinking about taking on such a project but I do not have the technical background.
620  Other / Meta / Re: Rating System for forum users. on: April 21, 2013, 11:26:49 AM
Another issue with rating systems is that they quickly turn into popularity contests, I think a better indicator than ignore would be good though. How about instead of ratings each user profile has a review system? This was you can tell if they are getting up votes from the same users (friends), and you can also find out problems people have faced dealing with them.
