Okay, though I intend to tweak a few things in next release to make things easier for new generations Wink

How do you run GEG with the same user on the same box as you also run Bitcoin on Unix?  I've downloaded the sources with git, compiled them and when running the daemon, even indicating a different --datadir and port (8335) it seems to connect to the Bitcoin network.  Are there any documentation on how to run both simultaneously, please?

A different datadir should force it to do everything okay.

Create your datadir. Make sure it's empty. put Geist's config there. Start geist with -datadir="path_to_datadir"

Do not pass port as startup option - config should be taking care of that.

If you did everything right, it will creater a testnet folder in the datadir which you specified and connect to channel #geistgeld00

First bounty: Update Notifier

You already have one! You just failed to use your own public key instead of Satoshi's key:

Hm... interesting, I PMed you.

*cough* 150 thousand? *cough*

Considering that we're around block 40000 (=280k mined), doesn't that seem like a bit much? The person who does it suddenly has ~1/3rd of the entire mining supply?

We need that thing fast, like, really soon. Because quite frankly when the exchange opens, we might have quite an influx of users who will later be quite careless to check for updates.

Need I remind that we still seem to have a few guys without ntp=1 (I wonder if we still have somebody bravely trawling Chain 1 Sad )

And I have reasons to believe that  kinks in the exchange will be sorted out pretty damn soon, and coding and testing that thing will likely take quite some time (so, more like ~ 1/4, the brave programmer will have)

EDIT: Decided to slightly tone it down to 69 777 so that nobody gets too nervous and the number is still kinda pretty  Wink...Hope that a kind skilled soul with a keen interest in Geist Geld (and Geists) will still show up soon enough ...

First bounty: Update Notifier

One of the things Geist Geld desperately needs to avert various unfavorable experiences down the line is a means to somewhat meticulously and insistently (within reason) notify the user if the majority of peers he is connected to have a version different from his own.

This will help to draw the user's attention to the fact that his version is lagging behind the general Geist Geld frontier and he'd better catch up until something bad happened.

The bounty on this one is 69 777  Geists, and of course proper credit in the  Contributors section of the website (which gonna go up real soon)

Meanwhile, I would ask the kind community to provide feedback as to possible pitfalls and implementation suggestions.

Thank you very much in advance

I agree. I never said that deflation will destroy bitcoin. I just can't see deflation as a desirable quality for a currency.

Can we agree that bitcoin isn't a "proper" currency and what it is experiencing, given both it's inherent properties and the context of its operation, allows one to say that what it will undergo isn't quite typical deflation ? Smiley
651  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Hypothetical currency with decentralized monetary policy on: September 20, 2011, 06:37:35 PM

If we say: "I lend you $100 worth in btc and you pay me $105 worth in btc" (imagine for this example that the dollar is stable), and bitcoins appreciate again x10, I paid lent you 20 btc and now you're giving me back 2 btc. Will I be happy with such a loan? I could just keep the 20 btc and I would be better.

Well, yes, given that BTC appreciate in a manner consistent with a deflationary good the credits would indeed be discouraged, in that specific scope it is not unreasonable to say that BTC behave in deflationary manner.

However, given that BTC isn't a State Currency and in fact floats relative to all them motherloving paper money (and also everything else anyone bothers to trade BTC against), the effects of this formally price-deflationary behavior on the state of Bitcoinomy will be different from the effect "price deflation" usually has on economies (Proper state economies are more or less self-contained units. Bitcoinomy is, well, "inhabiting" many other economic systems, more or less simultaneously, so I would suggest that shenanigans that ensue if/when bitcoins appreciate like crazy would be different from cases of state-supported currency appreciating like crazy)

In fact, assuming that BTC would appreciate insanely as typically claimed it would, fascinating economic activity would take place where Bitcoinomy and "normal world" intersect

I made a vector version of the original Geist Geld logo in adobe illustrator.
So next release perhaps you can put some high res logos in there?

OI, thanks, I already vectorized my original doodle, but your work is very appreciated Smiley I'll see which turned out best... Oh, could you please save it in svg, (open source, all that jazz Smiley )
653  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Hypothetical currency with decentralized monetary policy on: September 20, 2011, 05:12:29 PM
Well, it's somewhat saner per cunicula's explanation, but I find the issue to be a bit of a tempest  in a teapot, since monetary policy doesn't work with abstract products of exotic math as it would with vanilla money (fiat or otherwise).

"quasi-deflation" and "quasi-inflation" of cryptocoins is largely of relevance due to its psychological effects, not due to objective shift in available monetary mass (since said mass is infinitely divisible and as trivially infinitely renominable, and merchant response to shifting buying power of a a coin as expressed in any noncrypto-currency can be organized to be on the order of milliseconds)
654  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Proposal for possible successor to BitCoin -- EnCoin on: September 20, 2011, 05:07:27 PM
OP, let me be frank

I've only been here ~ 1 month and I've seen 4 alt-chains stagger and fall.

Which ones ?

Ixcoin is quite fine, derelictcoin ( i0 coin ) is fine as long as someone does not pull the plug on that poor dead miner's private pool Wink, Solidcoin is... well, somewhat flaccid, but still around, and namecoin is recovering.

So, which forks have "fallen" ?
655  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANNOUNCE] New alternate cryptocurrency - Geist Geld on: September 20, 2011, 05:04:25 PM
Any news on exchange service?

In the works. Mild technical issues.

I would be more interested in a pool at the moment, if anyone is setting up and need some help or spare servers do let me know.

I will PM you in a moment
656  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Proposal for possible successor to BitCoin -- EnCoin on: September 20, 2011, 04:04:45 PM
All your strategy goes around:

1) Fork bitcoin (you're not doing nothing new)

With all due respect, you are being demonstrably wrong here.

So far, neither source nor binaries are to be found, so it's more like "discuss forking bitcoin in a rather curious way" Smiley
657  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANNOUNCE] New alternate cryptocurrency - Geist Geld on: September 20, 2011, 03:23:22 PM
Tell me if you get orphan streaks like discussed several pages ago or any other weird stuff.
658  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANNOUNCE] New alternate cryptocurrency - Geist Geld on: September 20, 2011, 03:10:09 PM
It might be that one of the ISPs were having some mysterious network issues, the magnitude of effect of which is at the core of whether Geist would survive.

Could you keep Geist running on the "problem" pc and just keep an eye if NTP quirks or "mass orphanages" are common on it ?

P.S.:
My Russian friends have reported that domain name has been registered. Geist site is soon, after all.
659  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANNOUNCE] New alternate cryptocurrency - Geist Geld on: September 20, 2011, 03:00:34 PM
On shitty routers, UPnP can somehow upset them in a manner that renders the port closed (investigation underway, should eventually figure it out since I happen to have some shitty routers and a person with unhelathy amounts of free time available).
Restarting the daemon tends to help that one. If else fails, restart the router.

That should not affect outgoing connections though.

Wisdomtool, were both computers using the same internet connection ?
660  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANNOUNCE] New alternate cryptocurrency - Geist Geld on: September 20, 2011, 02:09:30 PM
I still can't connect.  In the GG client window I see a message that says "no valid UPnP IGDs found".  What does that even mean?

Means that the UPnP has not found a device it could have dirty talk with, so you are falling back on the vanilla approach to port forwarding

Strange enough you have no outgoing ones tho.

Post your getinfo and your config ( www.pastebin.com )
