661  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Why Token Swap? on: October 11, 2022, 09:12:27 PM
Some contract swaps also happen because a chain is cheaper or considered more innovative than the previous one too (this might just be a way to get investors to hope you're going to make something worthwhile or there might be a genuine plan behind it if the token is still going well/above ico price).

I've seen some tokens do badly and have their developers offer a buyback scheme on a new protocol too (with the same contract but with an additional function where coins are wrapped inside the contract so when you burn your tokens you'll get a proportion back out in your original currency).
662  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Ledger Nano X and Nano S Plus with free shipping on: October 11, 2022, 03:28:23 AM
What are the chances some less recognized hardware wallet makers take advantage of the lack of offers and manage to pull off their own discounts for the sake of advertisement?

There are certainly hardware wallets that have done well out of being cheap (a lot of them are probably of good enough security that they can still be relied upon to have a similar level as trezor and ledger).

This seems like a strange offer considering they have official stores on sites like amazon and are able to offer free delivery via them (unless there's an additional price factored in somewhere that covers delivery from them to a distribution place).
663  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: USDC - ERC20 Coin - Where To Transfer To To Sell And Put Funds In My Bank A/C on: October 11, 2022, 03:19:30 AM
If i transfer
there it could get lost as there are 3 or 4 networks that  it can be transferred via.

You'll face this issue everywhere, there's no exchange that's going to be free from this (that's popular anyway).

If it is erc20 usdc, you just need to select ethereum on the network selection (but it should already be selected). You're also looking for an address that begins with 0x if sending to an ethereum/erc20 wallet.
664  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Are you considering time span? on: October 11, 2022, 02:55:56 AM
I normally wait for a certain number of candles but I'm a bit random with it. If I remember I have a position open and haven't received any alerts, I'll normally wait for double or triple the previous trend (in candles) before closing my trade (say the price bounced from 20000 to 21000 twice and took 4 candles the on the drop and 3 candles on the rise, 12 candles later it's probably less likely to happen again - and a risk to leave the trade open). This also often happens because a tightening range (where the resistances above and supports below) have already coincided/crossed by the time I opened the order or there might be something on a higher timeframe that becomes more obvious.

A lack of movement imo is generally a bad thing if you're trading sub 4h candles (1d timeframes).
665  Economy / Speculation / Re: BTC price consolidation at $20k for 4 months on: October 10, 2022, 01:32:20 PM
We'll probably look back on bitcoin surviving these times and realise how strong it actually is..

1. The only way I see the Russia-ukraine problem resolving itself fairly quickly is if at least one of those countries goes into civil war (it's more likely to be Russia due to the lack of democracy - but it's also likely Russia can remain stable with a bit of restructuring - or nothing).

2. Interest rates probably need to go down for everything bitcoin related to improve for a fast return to higher prices. That's unlikely to happen, a drop to 4% is predicted by 2022 but that's long enough away that we'll see more stagnation internationally.
666  Economy / Economics / Re: Retailers make more profit than wholesalers during inflation. on: October 10, 2022, 12:59:05 PM
Transportation has often been touted as the most expensive charge in many economies and it looks like it could be the same here (perhaps that and the processing of the flour). Those two are technically owned by those who have made the biggest investment (vehicles and machinary) in order to produce the flour and deliver it so I think it makes sense they're first to put up their prices from inflation (it might not be or seem fair though).
667  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Reason why online wallets are hack on: October 10, 2022, 12:51:43 PM
There might also be a chance that some website tabs have access to other tabs too (depending on your browser - especially if it's old) which can lead to issues with websites being able to alter what's presented in a different tab. Electrum had a vulnerability years ago that meant json requests from websites could access certain wallet information (including nmemonics for unencrypted wallets).

Malware is easier to catch when it's in browser too. Add ons are quite fast and easy to add (like apps on an app store) and if you install something that manages to get past malware filters or install it a different way then you could end up with funds being stolen without knowing how (and these are less likely to be picked up if you don't have anti virus added to your browser or the threat is new/unique).

The oldest biggest risk of using online wallets though seemed to be not backing them up/remembering your password so it's nice that's changed (especially at a time before bip39) - unless this new issue is bigger than that one was.

668  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BTC price manipulation on: October 09, 2022, 05:15:32 PM
It probably depends. If you're going to believe that whales manipulate the market as much as had been suggested in the past (and still do it) then for larger coins like bitcoin they'd probably wait for times to do it when the market has low volatility, low volume and little order book depth so they know they'll push the price far enough in a direction to get a reaction.

For smaller coins, all they really need is an order book without much depth and to work out how cheap it is to pump a coin if no one cares to buy it once it's been pumped.

There's not a bad chance people who are bad at trading or annoyed they made a loss where they think they shouldn't have blamed whales and also a time where whales have been blamed for price manipulation and it was still speculated about long after as to whether it was whales or not. (the best way to tell would be to look at tiny timeframes of a second or 10 to see if all the move came quickly or didn't and only if it comes quickly would it confirm it's necessarily a whale).
669  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: What is the best language to write a miner in? on: October 09, 2022, 05:03:57 PM
The one you're most comfortable writing with. Most of the time the language you use doesn't matter, most systems have APIs that allow you to call other programs in other languages too (like how python's os module lets you run command line tasks).

If you're fairly new to programming there's ups and downs to using langiages that are statically typed (like c based languages and java) and ones that are dynamically typed (like python).

If you find you're very comfortable (/enjoying) programming one specific language, whatever it is, write it in that. If you don't care, you could always try both types.
670  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Transfering from 6667 to 8333 ... on: October 09, 2022, 01:07:14 PM
Make as many secure backups as you can to start with.

You can also copy and paste the addresses (beginning with 1, if you have them) you have on the old version with balances in them to check the funds are still there - once you've done that there's then no rush to actually update your node to the current software/download the blockchain.

Then I'd follow either of the above recommendations to actually restore your wallet and access the funds.
671  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: trading with order flow on: October 09, 2022, 12:48:16 PM
I think this is a hard strategy to implement in crypto as there are lots of different markets that are traded at once and some will see volume spikes (even if others have higher volume) because of the nature of their users.

That aside, it's sometimes good for the very short term. I've only used a strategy like that when selling when I see a large block of sell orders or buying when I see the opposite (but not on fast trading exchanges which seem to be a lot more erratic with this).
672  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Binance Hacked?! What we can do better to protect our funds? on: October 09, 2022, 11:39:19 AM
You can plug a trezor into your phone and use it there - from trezor suite web - (I'm not sure how eth works with that though because I haven't used it on mobile - the same goes for other smart contract coins).

The nature of the "hack" doesn't seem to have been mentioned in the article so it's hard to say if anything about keeping your keys more secure would help if you've still got the same transaction to send (and if the bridge or pool were manipulated, you'd still incur losses).
673  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Is it possible to somehow send a new block to the btc network without using port on: October 08, 2022, 03:23:32 PM
Do you understand your question or do you mean something else?

A port is normally added to the end of an address to identify either who's sending the information or what protocol it relates to (for opening a connection).

If you're trying to do something where you generate a block on a network but don't use an asic miner then you could look at mining on testnet (the blocks are easier to find but their rewards don't hold value) or mining a coin that can be mined on a CPU or gpu (it's probably easier to do this in a pool).
674  Economy / Economics / Re: "The times ahead will be radically different from those that we've experienced". on: October 08, 2022, 03:18:15 PM
Economic downturn is a consequence of economic prosperity and not necessarily a means to an end.

The British empire was still the British empire after some major stagnations (like 1850). Most empires are no more and international markets correlate to each other more than ever. The US will probably give way to more than one country if it starts to decline (China probably won't see much growth and is seeing its own economic downturn even before rejecting western vaccines).
675  Economy / Speculation / Re: What will happen to BTC & the rest of crypto if the US will default on its debt? on: October 08, 2022, 01:44:36 AM
There's more than one scenario of this happening though.

If the US economy is still growing and they decide not to repay their debt then bitcoin will probably do nothing (the market in general might become a bit more volatile and us companies would have to hold bonds in other currencies with other governments in order to continue functioning but that might be it). If it triggers a run on all the government bond markets and everyone's forced to pay up, countries like the UK and the Netherlands might be seen as safe haven places as they are two good examples of countries that offer to buy back bonds very quickly when their economy becomes unstable or uncertain (I think most of the EU is capable of this too and the bloc might function as one big bond buyer of its own bonds - like a few countries have always wanted).

If the US stagnated or started to decline and then defaulted on its debt this might crash bitcoin only if the effects were felt globally or the US had the most buying pressure on it.

The more worrying part of the US defaulting on its debt is the fact that it'll damage the dollar either way. Printing trillions of dollars to repay debt might hurt it less than defaulting.

There's the other option that the US might have indefinite bonds that means they might never default (as long as the interest is paid but it could be paid in new bonds as long as a buyer can be found).
676  Economy / Economics / Re: More than half of Silicon Valley residents want to leave on: October 08, 2022, 01:27:40 AM
I wonder if this is news because it's a problem for the bay area or if it's news because anyone who leaves california for other states likely makes the US more democratic (especially if they leave for somewhere like texas). I was reading earlier that 15 states have the same population as california but a lot more representation in the electoral college system (I assume it's 15x but I'm not certain).

I think this is a good thing but I'm not sure where they'd move to. As long as they can be accommodated in another city then there's probably good reason for them to keep moving to let the US prosper better economically.

California has about 1/7th of the US population too, relocating a lot of these people while keeping the economy as stable as possible will probably help the environment around them recover and for people to feel less condensed.

For a place that's reported high homelessness rates, it's better than what Hong Kong have to put up with too. I doubt the people who've bought property in Silicon Valley will be happy to sell up for a lower cost too and they might reap the rewards of staying there after paying high taxes (that money will still be in the system to help with improvements).
677  Other / Meta / Re: @Mods - Bitcoin Pumpkin carving contest on: October 08, 2022, 01:16:39 AM
That might have been the best place for it but I don't know if it'd be appropriate to suggest games and rounds too.

Perhaps a better place to market it would be in the news banner or a factoid slot here (but that's up to the mods and admins).
678  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Bitcoin address gone after reinstaling Electrum wallet? on: October 07, 2022, 08:18:15 PM
Can you find the link you downloaded electrum from? It should be in your browser history.

Also were the funds taken after you installed the wallet or before it (you could use your download history to confirm this). On most browsers download history is stored in your history and you should be able to see a link or right click on the list item in your history to find it.
679  Economy / Speculation / Re: Every signal is a speculation on: October 07, 2022, 08:12:54 PM
If you're getting signals from channels on places like Discord or telegram too, it might be possible to look at how the person giving the signals actually works them out. A lot of the good ones seem to have patterns that can be seen on the 4h or daily chart and normally pick the most volatile coins - it's not the worst supplemental to working it out as long as you use enough data points from them (and be aware they might use other timeframes - even non standard ones - and indicators to come up with their strategies so it's not perfect).
680  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Bitcoin address gone after reinstaling Electrum wallet? on: October 07, 2022, 07:15:59 PM
Have you checked on a block explorer to see if the funds went in that address or not? The OP is quite vague. There's a chance you had malware before/downloaded a fake wallet which gained control of your keys or changed the address you input on the other wallet.

Additionally, what wallet did you use? Are you sure the withdraw was processed/actually sent and confirmed.

You could also search the final address funds were sent to on a block explorer to see if anything significant comes up (like if it has deposits from other people).

Are you sure your restored the right seed and has the rest of your history for that wallet fully loaded and looking correct?
