The same thing can happen at the supermarket. Let's say you want to buy a walnut from the bulk isle. It cost $0.004 for the nut. But when you go to pay, they can't take less than a penny. Micro-transactions are not for dollars either.

I wonder if we would be able to guess who is who just from our manor and rantings?
Wait, other bitcoiners live on manners? I missed out on that. **********Example post***************** I will be at the Hilton lobby bar on Saturday starting about 7pm. Interested in venture capitol and crowdfunding. ****************************************
Don't forget to include the day. Fixed and fixed. Actually, I left the day off because I do not want anyone to think it is real. Although I may well be in the Hilton lounge that night.

Saturday and/or Sunday evening will have to be my socializing time. Anybody doing anything after conference time? I think it will be fun to meet you characters live. I'm arriving Friday and I'm up for any evening hang outs. I wonder, should we wear name tags with our forum handles? I was thinking about that also. It would be fun to have name tags that flip over to show your forum name. I wonder if we would be able to guess who is who just from our manner and rantings? This thread is as good as anyplace for organizing a meeting place. If anyone has a moment and wants to hang out, then post here. Even after the conference gets underway. **********Example post***************** I will be at the Hilton lobby bar on Saturday starting about 7pm. No. Bitcoin is the one, IMO. I have zero interest in the alt coins. None of them even remotely approach bitcoin.

Just as with fiat money, you must prove yourself to be trusted. No bank would ever loan you dollars without collateral. No business would ship you a virtual product before you pay. No customer likes buying from a person who won't give their name. Yet people here seem to be offended when no one trusts them for asking these same things.

Bitcoinpresscenter.org, the new design is ready and will go live in the next 24hrs. I would love to hear feedback. It looks like this: ...
Looks great man! I signed up and filled out the some of the bio stuff. What do I do now? I can't seem to get back to the bio and edit it. If I understand correctly, you will email me next after review. Then I can edit my info and post it as a pundit? Thanks for this service. It is published now. Thank you. And again, well done!

Just to be clear I in no way support changing bitcoin to include regulatory features. Following the rules should be up to the user, just like other laws.
|
|
|
It seems to me that not working with regulators is a sure path to the most onerous regulations.

A drum of vodka! Stephen, we have truly arrived.

Being an open source project anyone is welcome to create their own new coin. Unfortunately, many do. There is no need to try keeping up with them. Most are just somebody's coding project of the month.

Face to face is safe and kinda fun. You get a chance to meet other peers near you and help build the community. If you are concerned about your own safety then bring your own gun. I have no problem meeting with someone who wants to bring a legal gun for protection. In fact I think we are both safer that way.

The only real protection you can count on is possession. The moment you turn over your BTC to a person or business they are at greater risk. Even if the company is an honest one, they are not at all likely to have insurance. What do you think will happen when their servers are compromised and all the coins are gone?
Eventually we may see insurers backing a bank's holdings of bitcoin, but for now I would make a copy of my big wallet and keep it in a safe deposit box. Then you can risk storing a few coins in an online wallet.

Why do you guys always think the state is out to get you, and your bitcoin?
|
|

If you can do it with dollars, you can do it with BTC. Including scams, money laundering, tax evasion. But just as with dollars, you may go to jail for that. In the future there will be more bitcoin regulation. I'm as sure of that as I am of bitcoins success.

I think a lot of people believe that if there was no government there would be no taxes. I have been to a lot of lawless places and that is not the case. You would pay tolls on roads at makeshift checkpoints. You would need to bribe smugglers to get basic goods, and pay protection money or face the terror of the militias. There is no free lunch.
