One problem I see with this is that people who simply disagree on a subject will start giving each other negative karma and eventually it will invalidate the helpful post they make

724  Economy / Economics / Re: If all of the world's paper currency was replaced... on: May 04, 2011, 09:38:38 PM
I don't like this estimation. It does not tell you anything and therefore has no meaning, if such situation is impossible. If Bitcoin replaced all cash, there wouldn't be much sense in using these currencies in any other form. I think better way of estimating how much Bitcoin would be worth if it replaced traditional money is to think how many people would use it and how much they would need over a certain period of time(interval between paychecks lets say). Whatever value you get, then you can increase it with respect to how much people would like to have and are able to obtain/hoard.
If bitcoin indeed replaced traditional money, it would be worth a lot more

Great work on resolving the problem and defending subsequent DDoS attempts Tux.  This whole event has made me feel a bit more secure with the valuation of BTC.  For such an extensive (multi-day) attack shutting down the largest exchange, the price has barely been affected.  I was expecting a price dump into the $2.00-2.25 range as a result of people getting scared.

Congratulations from me as well. Also, I am proud of our community that we didn't let those incidents affect our faith in Bitcoin. Of course, these attacks were not aimed at the Bitcoin network itself (which is not easy to be attacked), only the websites related to it; nevertheless, some people might have lost faith for a while.

I would love to find out who organised this attack. I wonder would he be equally courageous face to face.

+1 Seems like majority here are in for the long ride.

great job cdhowie

edit: I listened to the whole show and have to say my favorite part was that girl who "gets lost in string theory for days" but can not comprehend the basic concept of private/public key cryptography
729  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What if receiving payments in bitcoins is made illegal? on: May 04, 2011, 01:32:04 PM
Here's a better question:

What if we make governments illegal?

Excellent idea!  I can no longer kill natives, own slaves, or beat my women.  Why is this last bastion of abusive behavior (government) still tolerated?

Did you mean you can not name your child whatever you want except from the government approved list, walk in cities without being watched all the time and travel without being ass raped  at every airport?

I too often wonder..
730  Economy / Marketplace / Re: BTC NEAR ME on: May 04, 2011, 01:10:05 PM
famulus, great idea, but I was wondering. If I didn't want to buy or sell, just browse the list of nearby trades for future reference, is there a way to do that?
731  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: MTGox vs mysterious Russia on: May 04, 2011, 12:52:02 AM
What is the expiry time set to?

Just use a proxy or tor or i2p.  Knowing how to route around damage (like blocking) is an important skill for fully utilizing the internet.

I know how to do that yrral86, but for me it's not super critical as I mainly use mtgox to keep an eye on the btc/usd exchange rate. But thanks nonetheless for your tip Wink

allinvain if you get on irc, on freenode there are couple of channels you can watch trades and rates in real time. #bitcoin-watch lets you not only do that but also watch every transaction on the network in real time. the other channel is called #bitcoin-market

Are your egos really that big and offended that you can not see what damage you are doing? He may be an idiot or an outright cunt altogether - why do you care so much? He means well to bitcoin and we all have common goals. If you don't wanna deal with him - that's fine, but do you think making false claims about his site will make a positive contribution to our economy? Get your shit together, stop fighting with each other and move on. If you wanna fight, I'm sure there's plenty coming in the near future from real enemies
734  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: ALERT !! BTCEX.COM == FRAUD SITE. DON'T USE IT. on: May 03, 2011, 10:23:00 PM
Okay. As for me I can not be sure was it his DDoS attack or not.

Doesn't matter.
He encouraged people/hackers to attack a rival exchange. That is enough. This is far from honest business.

Get over yourself. He might not be the nicest guy in the world, but there's nothing wrong with his site

Are you tired of watching the value of the dollar plummet?
Are you tired of banks and these rich cock suckers taking away your last pennies?

Who said that bitcoin threatened by ddos on mtgox. If so are there any valid arguments to support such an assertion?

I see it as some speculators cannot speculate for a day or two, big deal! Whatever does not kill us makes us stronger. There will be more exchanges, bigger and better than mtgox, give it some time.

Agreed. I though at this point bitcoin exchange rate would crash, but despite everything it's holding and hasn't been bellow $3. I think it's a good indication that bitcoin is much stronger than we all thought
737  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Recovering address and key from corrupted wallet on: May 03, 2011, 10:06:22 AM
I was reinstalling windows as installer overwritten some of my truecrypted partition.

I had something around 20 transactions in wallet, but the i am sure that most bitcoins are at the address i posted.

I found wallet header, but i cannot restore it, because i dont know where it ends. Even if i knew where it ends it is probably fragmented anyway.

monstery
I,m not sure this will work, but here's an idea. Try restoring the encrypted volume header from the disk that truecrypt created when you created the volume and try mounting it.
738  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Best Practices using BTC/ Wallet Backup on: May 03, 2011, 12:53:03 AM
IF I ever have enough bitcoins to be worried about them, I will put my "savings account" wallet on a CD-R (or two) and put it in a safety deposit box (or two).

The neat thing is, you can still send bitcoins to the savings account while it is sitting in that metal box, and they will show up on your client when you get the CD-R out and use the wallet with bitcoin "2020 edition".

And then after few years your computer drive crashes, you open the deposit box just to find out, that these CD-R's are empty

Can someone explain me in one sentence how LOIC is different to other (d)dos tools existing in decades? Why "ddos for the masses"? Is it using some ultra simple gui maybe to allow every lowbob to use it?

Yes
740  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: MtGox - too many connections on: May 03, 2011, 12:09:16 AM
The Script,

Yes, I know that the on west a "professionals" hide the truth, lie at the same time smiling and looking straight into your eyes. Sorry, but I do not like this behaviour, I came to the community to participate in creating a better currency and not to deceive mistaken people.

Centralization of the exchange, the complexity of the withdrawal of money and accelerating inflation of the bubble - for understandable reasons what happens. I'm surprised that the attackers did not think to do it sooner. And I am glad that it did not happen the week after, when bitcoiny would cost $10 - I think that if I lived in the U.S. I am would have been killed in these circumstances. while the haters would give a damn about what I do not have relation with the attack.
