Glad you like the crypto collectibles and Welcome to the Indian collectibles community  Cool

Regarding the groupbuy I don't think much of them here are interested in spending €15 or probably they are really concerned about giving away the addresses. Polymerbit are one of the most sort out brilliant collectible note makers in the market and their unique design speaks for themselves. See here for the new Friday release on the "Birds of The World" series: [ANN] [ON SALE FRI] Emperor Penguin Loaded Note

Physical crypto collectibles are one of the most un-researched areas according to Indian crypto community, but they are among the safest ways for you to invest money instead of trading the shitcoins. I am pretty much sure we won't lose any money in terms of USD or INR if you buy items which isn't the case for shitcoins. I am a newbie and small time collector and no where near to any of the serious collectors out here in our forum. You should probably check the Collectibles board to know about the beauty of these collectibles and the kind-heartedness of collectors there.  I would surely say, the best people of this forum are present in collectibles board and you won't find that very often Smiley

I first heard about Bitcoins about three years ago (spring 2011), at that time a Bitcoin was worth about $2.00. The first thing I did was to download the Bitcoin client and started mining. I left it running a couple of hours, but as I can come back I had not gotten any Bitcoins. I thought, well screw this. Now looking back at it it feels stupid. Bitcoins were ridiculously easy to mine compared to today. Imagine if I had continued mining...

But that didn't end my Bitcoin story. I continued reading on the Bitcoin forums where people were speculating about the future price and impact of Bitcoins. I remember people dreaming about future values of up to $1000 and all kinds of cool ways to use them. At some point, I discussed it with some friends at school. I was 15 back then, but two friends actually caught on and found it really interesting. We discussed back and forth whether we should invest in Bitcoins or not. Finally, I decided to buy $20 worth of Bitcoins. Remember that at that time one Bitcoin was worth only $2, so I got 10 of them.

Buying them was a bit tricky though. The only real exchange site at the time was Mt. Gox. I created an account but immediately hit a problem, how would I transfer money to Mt. Gox? They had an option to transfer money by PayPal, but they had a processing time of one week to avoid scams. But I didn't want to wait that long, I was super excited, who knows where the value will be next week?

I continued browsing the forums to find another way to buy some Bitcoins. Eventually, I decided to buy from someone directly. I created an account on the IRC chat and managed to find a guy who was willing to sell Bitcoins to me by PayPal. I have to know idea who this guy was, his age, sex, country, etc. I knew nothing about him, except that he had a reputation on the forums. Finally, I transferred $20 to him by PayPal and a couple of minutes later I had 10 Bitcoins in my wallet!

A couple of months after my purchase, around June 2011, the value of Bitcoins started taking off for the first time. I remember excitedly following the rise and wondering whether I should sell. I kept telling myself that it might rise a bit more and kept waiting. Finally, the bubble hit its top at about $30 and fell back to the levels that I bought in to. I was a bit frustrated thinking that I had missed the whole party.

Eventually, I lost interest and only checked the value maybe once a month until January 2013 when the value started moving again. The value started rising rapidly and my thoughts were drawn back to the summer 2011 and the last bubble that I had missed. Afraid to miss the party again I sold my Bitcoins in February 2013 for $30 each only keeping 0.1 Bitcoins just in case, expecting the value to fall shortly after as it did in the last bubble. That didn't happen.

The following months were quite painful to follow as the value kept rising and rising... When the value soared above $1000 in fall 2013 I wanted to rip my hair off. I tried to keep myself from checking the value and stop thinking about the $10 000 I could have made from a $20 investment. One of my friends who I discussed Bitcoins with before contacted me at this point interested in whether I still have them or not, he had finally decided not to buy Bitcoins when I did. I can tell you that he does really regret that decision today...

Today I do not feel too bad about it anymore. It does bother me that I missed $10 000 but I have pretty much come over it. I try to focus on the fact the I still had a 1400% increase in my investment. It was a really risky investment and I am very lucky to have gotten anything out of it at all. When will I hit the jackpot like that again?

Oh, and my final 0.1 Bitcoins went missing a couple of days ago as Mt. Gox was shut down. Great.

744  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Where do exchanges store the coins? Private per customer or combined? on: December 08, 2019, 11:58:40 AM
...snip...

@bitmover @o_e_l_e_o What you both are saying are very much true I guess. There might be different policies for various exchanges, but for majority of the time I have seen small bitcoin/crypto holdings don't move up to the cold wallet. Well I might even be wrong with this, but last week I deposited a minor amount of 0.005BTC for exchanging them with USDT in one of the popular exchanges and further sold them in the process. I have the holdings now in USDT, but after exploring the balance of the deposit address in an explorer the BTC didn't move out of the address but the balance of my account should have been changed in the exchange database!

A exchange can have one single wallet but multiple different addresses assigned to various exchange users. So probably there should be a threshold of the btc amount which gets moved out of the hot wallet.

P.S I am little confused on the deposit address allocation by the exchanges to users. Does 2 different users at 2 different time frames (3-4 months interval) gets allocated the same deposit address? I firmly believed this was the true and a made a post regarding the same, but many forum members disagreed with me! Huh But after recently checking my exchange deposit address, I was allocated a deposit address which was used for a 1+ BTC transaction 3 months back.
745  Other / Meta / Re: Why not tokenize the forum? on: December 07, 2019, 09:25:53 AM
^
The concept is pretty much confusing and doesn't seem to serve any good purpose and as others said, the total token drama will be too much centralized with only certain people having the tokens!

...snip...
Pretty much this.

Many of us or probably 90% of us (the forum members) doesn't even know what a forum is actually I think. I am not complaining people who came here to ask doubts or discuss about things related to Bitcoin or cryptocurrencies in general, but who signed up here for the sole purpose of earning money/extracting the best out of this forum even after knowing the sole purpose of a forum and subsequently contributing lesser than what they get paid.

I am not sure if I have shared this already but, I have been a Torrenter for quite a long time (maybe the time we people started using emule or similar stuff) and I have uploaded TBs of data worth of movies and TV-Shows for the welfare of other downloaders. I do this out as an hobby and even today I do this when time permits. None paid me for what I did, and you shouldn't demand for that as well! But that doesn't seem to be here, many of us are for earning through bounties and signatures which isn't the purpose of our forum.

P.S : There is an ERC-20 token in the name of bitcointalk  Cheesy : https://etherscan.io/token/0xfc3dd0b1808ed23ab7f1657264dd6c9d0cb38782

You should better come up with another name or a separate blockchain for bitcointalk if you really need to.  Grin
746  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Where do exchanges store the coins? Private per customer or combined? on: December 07, 2019, 01:34:55 AM
You could classify cryptocurrency exchanges into two types : Centralized and Decentralized

A decentralized exchange such as IDEX, never move your funds to cold wallet but a centralized exchange does. For example if you consider exchanges like Binance or coinbase, whenever you send btc to the address associated with the exchange wallet, the coins first moves to the address which you have sent and from there to the cold wallet of the exchange. Here the front end of the exchange or simply the database of the exchange plays a vital role in updation of your balances. Even though the coins were moved to another wallet which is specifically a cold storage, the exchange displays you hold bitcoin in your account.

When you sell btc to another account through a limit order, the balance associated with your account gets changed and the exchange account which bought your coin gets updated in the exchange balance book. Here there is no onchain transaction taking place and such transactions take place only when you initiate a withdraw from your exchange account.

In other words: can anyone who has seen at least 1 transaction related to my Coinbase-account, therefore see my balance I am holding at Coinbase?
No they cannot since the coins move to a larger cold wallet and wouldn't be associated with your account when seen through explorers. Hence you are the one who could see the balances which are updated in front end system of the exchange.
747  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Mobile Wallets on: December 06, 2019, 06:55:02 PM
Not all the mobile wallets are considered less secure but majority of the wallets are! Wallets like mycelium are trustworthy in the sense you can use them for spending your small amount of bitcoins. I have been using mycelium for quite a long time as a mobile wallet for spending my funds immediately when I am away from my PC. But on the other hand, you shouldn't be having large chunks of bitcoin in mobile wallets, web wallets or hot wallets. Hot wallets and Web wallets are some of the bad wallets which one can trust upon as they have poor security when compared with mobile and desktop wallets.

I would suggest you to have a hardware wallet like Ledger/Trezor for holding your btc for longer term and electrum as a desktop wallet connected with Ledger and mycelium in your mobile. Electrum mobile wallet is certainly bad at times and they could create problems at times. Here is a post of mine about the disadvantages of using a Electrum mobile wallet over another mobile wallet like mycelium : Bitcoin account my mobile

How could they obtain my pin/fingerprint?

Fingerprint/Pin alone wouldn't make a wallet secure as far as mobile wallets are concerned. Your mobile would always be connected to internet which might pose a problem for you if your mobile is affected by a malware. Consider like the hacker has injected a malware in your mobile, and when you send btc it might redirect to his address. You should always use wallets like Electrum in a offline computer or a hardware wallet for storing large amounts.

I would like to shed some light on the early days of the history of Indian local board.

For quite some time from 2010, there was somewhat moderate activity of Indians in this forum. But since they didn't have a forum, they were discussing about the Indian bitcoin stuffs in Bitcoin Discussion and the transactions of Indian Rupee to Bitcoin took place in Marketplace section. knight22 was the first user to request for a separate local board dedicated to India in Meta.  Some literally very old satoshi timers hailing from India (diswara) supported the idea and was taken into theymos attention.

knight22 requesting for a separate local board dedicated to India :

I have noticed that a lot of people from India are trying to get closer relations. Maybe it is the good time to create a new sub forum in the local bord for India people?

diswara supported the idea :

I am from Tamilnadu, India & I encourage to have a sub forum.
The reason for not much coordination on Bitcoin awareness is due to different language people living in different part of India.

The uniqueness of India "Unity in diversity", some what restricts coordination due to different languages.
So, it will take some time.

theymos created a new local board for India :

OK, added.

This was how the local board was created. For over 6 months the board didn't have a dedicated moderator, then Benson Samuel PMd theymos to make him the moderator at somewhere around March 2013. Then theymos replied Benson for how people of India are reacting to his moderator position.

Hello All,

I had written to theymos to grant me access as the moderator for the India forum.

It could use a lot of organizing and mild moderation.

He has requested me to post this and request India forum members for their opinion if everyone is alright with me as the moderator.

Looking forward to some responses and suggestions.

And then finally at March 20,2013 Benson was made the moderator for Indian local board. Till the coinsecure hack he was the sole moderator and was removed from the position at April 2019. This is how the Indian local board was created and Benson was made the moderator.

EDIT : September 11,2012 marks the birth of Indian local board. A really good and unique topic.  Smiley

I guess the topic is also meant for reporting ban evaders as well. Am I right @iasenko or @LoyceV or should I report the user in the plagiarism topic?

Yesterday I requested MODS to ban Newbie BeastCoin2020 for plagiarism and the same was done. The account was banned and was seen through modlog

Nuke user: N/A in topic #0 by member #2715765

Now another account with a same name (a little modifications actually  Grin) returned back and started posting in other boards instead of appealing for the ban.

User : Beastcoin20

Users evading ban and posting other than appealing for the ban should be banned again. Requesting MODS to do that at the earliest.

P.S Reported posts made by the user and reference my post here.

Some people believe that global warming is just the conspiracy to control the development of industrial country. Sometime, I think so. What about you?

Most scientists recognize that global warming does seem to be happening, but a few don't believe that it is anything to be worried about. These scientists say that the Earth is more resistant to climate changes on this scale than we think. Plants and animals will adapt to subtle shifts in weather patterns, and it is unlikely anything catastrophic will happen as a result of global warming. Slightly longer growing seasons, changes in precipitation levels and stronger weather, in their opinion, are not generally disastrous. They also argue that the economic damage caused by cutting down on the emission of greenhouse gases will be far more damaging to humans than any of the effects of global warming.

756  Local / Marketplace (India) / [INTEREST CHECK] Group Buy for 10th anniversary Bitcointalk Coldkey collectible on: November 24, 2019, 09:27:16 AM
Hello everyone,

9 months ago theymos pitched the idea of creating a collectible dedicated for the bitcointalk community and to be given to the forum users in return for what they have contributed all these years for the community. Then yogg came up with his idea of creating a Coldkey Card dedicated for the bitcointalk community and over the days it got shaped well into a really good collectible item. Here is the announcement for the Coldkey cards : 10 years of Bitcointalk commemorative Coldkey and here is the Coldkey site for purchasing the bitcointalk card : 10th Anniversary of Bitcointalk Commemorative Coldkey

The collectible card took into a great shape and here we have them finally for holding them in hand. A true bitcointalk forum user would have them in hand for sure as it would be a symbol for what we have been doing in Internet for all these days (for over 6 years to some months for newbies).

What are Coldkey cards?

Coldkeys are a new brand of collectible cards being made by our very own trustworthy forum user yogg and theymos has himself asked us to take a look into the collectible cards which are dedicated for the celebrating the 10th forum anniversary.

Prices and the Process of Group Buy :

10th anniversary bitcointalk Coldkey cards can be ordered in various designs which were made by various bitcointalk members and each card would cost as low as only 14.90€ ~ 1180 INR. The shipping would cost an additional 8€.

Here are the designs in which Coldkey cards can be purchased :

1. geophphreigh

2. Yatsan

3. madnessteat

4. palukritik

5. jayguar

6. LbtalkL

7. polymerbit

How will this group buy occur :

1. You need to mention how many cards you need in your reply along with the design you need.

2. I will collect the btc and I would make the purchase on behalf of you and get them shipped to me.

3. From there I would be re-shipping to other states for forum members. We all know that India Post has a very low shipping cost and I guess the total cost for shipping from me to you would be around less than 100 INR.

Why am I doing this?

I don’t charge any extra costs apart from the shipping prices and if possible some negligible fee for packaging costs. If we ship from yogg to India (i.e to me) that would save us a majority of shipping fee and also would help us to buy this bitcointalk collectible in a very cheaper price. If there is more interest, we can ask yogg for any discount on this group buy as well.

For example, if we order 8 cards on total, the total shipping to me would cost around only 8€ i.e 1€ per card and from there around 50-100 INR to reshipping it to you. I am sure people involved in crypto and particularly in this forum wouldn't have a great deal in spending 15 EUR for a collectible card.

Another problem is that, myself or someone order it as a single card, we would need to pay 8 EUR for this and if purchasing through the group buy we can save costs on shipping. The card itself is must have for any bitcointalk user in my opinion.  Smiley

Import Fees :

I have received collectibles from various countries (USA, EU) to India and there is a VAT fee only for Silver items. Cards and other coins are never charged and is absolutely free of cost as far as I know.

Willing to hear other’s opinions and suggestions on this!

Thanks to everyone who have been a part of this great community and have been thriving hard everyday till now to make this forum stand on top without losing its quality. Being here for over 2 years is such an immense pleasure and I have been learning something new each day from here right from the way how btc has evolved and some of the important events which took place in the history of early bitcoin days.

Thank You satoshi, gavin, sirius, theymos, BadBear, Cyrus and others administrators (if there are any and I have left out) who have made and managed this place to become a great piece of history over time. Probably the next 10 years would be of a great run with bitcoin being known to many of the people all over the world.

My Prediction is : $7850

My btc address: 17jtewfAZCsfKPTrRCcvDRtcmmwqhYTsGj

And we have a winner for this game.

Congrats ragavancoin, DarkStar_ would probably pay you at the earliest.

The contest was a minor initiative to bring back the long dormant Indian board and hopefully I believe everyone has started being active here and some of the quality discussions has started taking place as well. We all can consider this as a little hopeful and positive start for the major revamp/reshaping we had been longing for all these days. This does prove that all we need is a little determination to change the board to the way it was prevailing back.

If posting quality posts and receiving merits is for the greater good, giving away our earned smerits to the fellow forum members and reporting spam posts is also necessarily needed for the better working of the local forum on a longer run. Consider this like while you are downloading anything through torrent you should seed back for others to receive them. Let us all pledge to do that from today at least in the Indian board so that our fellow newbies would probably rank up as we do in the future and also it would be much better to keep this local board cleaner than ever.

We can consider this day as not only a 10th anniversary of this forum created by satoshi, but the beginning of a new era of the Indian sub-forum.

Thanks to everyone who has participated so far and let us all build a stronger local board and as theymos said :

Do we have any archive or something of the forum when it was running as bitcoin.org/smf/ or forums.bitcoin.org?

Yes there are archives of forum when it was in the older domain. But it's the same forum as it is used to be now but with less boards like when you see the oldest archive of the bitcoin.org/smf domain, there were only 2 boards present (Bitcoin Discussion and Technical Support) boards.
