441  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Why can't I compile the bitcoin source code? on: August 18, 2020, 03:21:15 PM
Virtual Machine is slower and uses more resources compared with WSL since WSL is hypervisor type 1, while VM is hypervistor type 2.
+1 with this. I was running Ubuntu through my VM and it was not really a good experience to say. Also Microsoft has stopped the support for Windows 7 which is another double negative to be taken into consideration. Running a Ubuntu through VM isn't good either and running Windows 7 isn't good either.

If I was in the position of OP, I would take a backup of my files and would definitely move on to Linux Mint/Ubuntu (considering OP is a new user of Linux). Why anyone should really depend upon an OS which has no support from the team?

Running windows 10 now and there's a shit load of questionable documentation on this.
You would be having a lesser support from the crypto developers if you are depended on Windows as majority of the developers use Linux based OS. I have used both Windows and Linux for building and creating a shitcoin of my own for learning purposes and I can say that it's much easier with Linux than Windows since the instructions for cloning and building are better in Linux than with Windows. Also you should be able to know the basics of Linux based systems if you are willing to clone bitcoin and work on it as you need to be working on WSL.

You can use the developer documentation : https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/blob/master/doc/build-windows.md for building bitcoin through Windows. Buy as pooya87 pointed out, you will never be able to create your ground breaking coin  Roll Eyes if you depend on bitcoin for sure. The code is too complex for a normal person to understand the entire workflow unless you are working on bitcoin core for many years or too familiar with the internal workings. To prevent this, you can go with the v0.1.0 satoshi code which is lot more easier than the current complex code which has segwits, bug fixes, translations etc.

If you are thinking of cloning Ethereum, you can better skip the idea. Bitcoin is easier to understand and has better code quality than Ethereum!

447  Local / India / [INDEPENDENCE DAY RAFFLE] #7 - Pick a lucky number and win 0.001 bitcoin on: August 15, 2020, 07:52:47 PM
INDEPENDENCE DAY RAFFLE #7

Happy 74th Independence Day everyone! It's been 73 years since we received Independence and to commemorate this day, here is a special raffle being conducted! The #7 raffle should have been started in July, but since there was scarce participation which made the extension of June Raffle it's postponed to August. The #8 Raffle would be conducted in September only if the current raffle finishes off before the first week of September.

Talks apart, the crypto market has been going through various a wild ride for the past couple of months starting from June. Just to quote a little : DeFi is trending and we are experiencing a mirror image of 2017 bull run! Shitcoins are pumping again, Ethereum touching 2 year high and of course scams are trying to prove themselves as legit projects  Cheesy I hope everyone are enjoying this wild crypto ride and I also believe this will bring in new members to ever growing small community of local board posters. As of today, the price is around $11,800 ~ ₹8,80,000 per bitcoin.

As I have already said in the ANN topic, these fun lotteries will be hosted each month and the rules are same as the previous. With the January cooling period coming to an end as of July, @sureshnsnet can start participating in these raffles starting from this month until they win another.

About the Game :

1. This is a pretty simple and quite interesting game, where there would be 16 spots from 0-9 and a-f. Each person should pick one character and post in the reply of this topic along with their bitcoin address.

2. Once all the 16 spots are filled, I will choose one single future block to be mined. For instance person X has chosen '8' as their spot and I have chosen block #643887. Here the hash of the block #643887 is 0000000000000000000f56f8272ebea893f3bbc257a84f919ff46b8972ecd0c8 which determines that 8 is the winning character.

3. The person who has chosen the correct character wins the prize amount of 0.001BTC (Please note that 0.001BTC is kinda cheaper but in terms of our economy it costs around 880 INR which is much better)

As per rules, they are mostly the same as followed in the previous raffle topics

Rules :

1. The game is strictly restricted only to Indian forum members. If you are someone outside India or hailing from nearby countries like Bangladesh, Pakistan or Sri Lanka, you are not allowed to participate in this game.

2. Previous raffle/lottery winners cannot participate in the upcoming games for 6 months. Let us give others a chance to win some bitcoins. You can consider this 6 months as a cooling period like if some X has won the game in February, they can participate only in the September raffle. Our local community is so small such that I have reduced the period to 6 months. If in future, we rise up to one of the most populated local boards I might change the rule such that the game winners cannot participate in the upcoming lotteries for over a year.

3. There are 16 spots and only 1 slot per person is allowed and more importantly I cannot give you any random spots. Once I have updated the slot in OP, there is no changing of slot numbers. Please see to the filled spots in OP/ have an eye on picked up spots by others before posting your slot number in reply.

4. Newbies are allowed to participate, but you shouldn't have made your first post in this topic and You might have been a old guy but isn't really an active poster.

5. This topic is only for playing the game and all the other discussions and doubts regarding the raffle or future game ideas should be posted only in the Indian Raffle Discussion topic.

6. Bounty Hunters are not allowed to participate in the game. Even though if you are from India, the board doesn't need bounty hunters who are chiming here only for profits or earning money from this forum.

Previous Raffle Winners :

448  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to make old people understand Bitcoin? on: August 15, 2020, 11:22:02 AM
...snip...
The idea of bitcoin has evolved into something different than what satoshi has envisioned. Considering the whitepaper, it was meant to be used as a mode of payment for the internet users. But with the current scenario, people with far less common sense are jumping into investing/trading bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies with the sole purpose of being rich as soon as possible and selling when they are having profits. I would never say everyone trading bitcoin do really know the purpose or technology behind the currency but rather think as a high yield scheme which will make them rich at some point of time in their life. Hence, for the older generations it won't be really difficult if we introduce bitcoin as a trading scheme but rather it might pose a difficulty if they are eager to learn the technology behind bitcoin.

I'm looking for the easiest way to make old people understand Bitcoin more thoroughly.

Read all three volumes of "Internet of Money" and a not really fast paced "Digital Gold" book. You would be having an excellent way of approach to make the old people understand about bitcoin (neglecting the technology behind bitcoin). Bitcoin works just similar to coins and bank notes since we always get a change when we do the transaction which is lesser than what we initially have in our wallet. While you are educating the old people about bitcoin, completely neglect the trading strategy which is quite popular in crypto space but rather introduce bitcoin as a digital currency invented to prevent the centralization of banks.

I think I am eligible to post this since I have successfully managed to educate a 70-year old person about bitcoin last year. The person was able to understand bitcoin quite a bit and was able to do some simple transactions through mycelium once last year between me and them. I have lost contact with the person and not really sure if they are using bitcoin still, but they were able to grasp the basics of a digital currency in layman terms.

Hey zullar, Welcome to the forum!

The topic would have better response if it is moved to Goods > Collectibles subforum. You can use the bottom left "move topic" button to move this to the Collectibles subforum.

It's been a little longer time since I have seen a Kialara Silver coming up for sale/auction. The last auction (AFAIK) dates back to November 2019 where it was sold for 0.075BTC at the price of $9200/BTC But remember it was a lower number #57 and here you can find the auction details : [AUCTION] Kialara Silver 1 BTC Bar #57 and Kialara Labyrinth #648 Hence you should assume that your bar might be fetching the price tag somewhere between $600-$800...

I would also like to here expert opinions on this who sold a Silver bar few months back!
451  Local / India / Re: Can increase in Gold's volatility benefit bitcoin ? on: August 07, 2020, 04:51:34 PM
Pardon me, but I still firmly consider bitcoin as a mode of payment/global currency rather than calling that as a form of investment/digital gold. I might be proven wrong in a couple of years or I might be proven correct if the adoption of bitcoin as a currency increases at a larger rate. The adoption rate of bitcoin as a currency is influenced by two major factors :

  • The scalability/privacy of bitcoin which can be achieved through protocol developments such as Schnorr signatures or Taproot
  • The adoption by the global population.

Today at the current adoption rate, it's not really possible to scale without the adoption from the public to consider it as a currency. How much of us are trying to spend bitcoin for a service as it is in the original form without converting them to INR? It's very less because, the services or owners of the products are not willing to accept bitcoin as a form of currency and many of them are not even aware of such a currency exists.

In developed countries like Australia or USA, bitcoin is being used both as a mode of currency and as an asset class. But here, scam artists are using bitcoin and cryptocurrencies as a way to scam poor newbies and nothing more than that. Creating more and more crypto exchanges around India will never increase the adoption as a currency but rather it will make them as a trading asset class. On the other hand, if we have dedicated research labs set up to scale/develop the protocol that will indeed pave way for better innovation as well as freedom from Congress and BJP governments. On top of that, I also completely agree with what @TheUltraElite and @webtricks said about the gold investments.

Let me ask you a question, what is the purpose of bitcoin if they are being used as a asset class? Do you wear them and show off as we do with gold ornaments? Have you invested in any company for them to rise in popularity and there by get returns? As of now (~10 years) we are using bitcoin as a speculative investment to get rich and this will probably limit us towards a newbie mindset towards bitcoin!

Do we really need freedom from banks (controlled by governments) or are we going to continue investing in a currency speculating that it might reach the moon some day?

Whenever I am not enrolled in a paid signature, I usually wear the self-made Bitcoin Signature in my sig space but I guess its time to promote the most trusted casino guide website created by you. Though I don't post much in the gambling sections of the forum, I can guarantee you that I would be posting in most of the major sections of the forum (excluding Mining and local boards) and thereby the site would be atleast having a minimal outreach through my posts.

This really trustworthy and awesome casino guide website created by you needs some extra promotion on top of the signature participants. @efialtis you have made the gamblers lives easier by creating a one-stop solution for all the problems which we are facing in terms of finding trustworthy casinos, hence all I can do as of now is to wear the BTC GOSU signature in my sig space and promote as much as possible.  Cool

Also, I have started thinking about implementing a newsletter signup - is anyone here still signing up for newsletters?
Newsletters will be a great add-on for sure!

456  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Why can't I compile the bitcoin source code? on: August 02, 2020, 05:37:11 PM
Did u Reset the Ubuntu 18.04 by clicking on Advanced Options ? If not, go ahead with that and then access the Ubuntu 18.04 LTS application, create an username again and go with the build. If you haven't done that, you might run into unknown errors/warnings/exceptions again as it might clash with the older installation.

Going by the pic which you posted, didn't you install mingw-w64 cross-compilation tool chain? Also didn't you change the default compiler option to posix? I think if you didn't change the compiler option, you will get the error which you posted in the first video : 'recursive_mutex' is not a member of 'std'

If you have an unsuccessful build, try the above 2 options which I posted.
457  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Why can't I compile the bitcoin source code? on: August 02, 2020, 11:14:24 AM
I captured a video, with the steps that I do: https://youtu.be/xt-lqp9W640
Can someone tell me what's the problem?

Not sure if my post would be of any help but I had built the source a couple of times in 2 different OS. One was in Ubuntu last year where I didn't have any problem in building and had run various python tests successfully. Last month, I built it in Windows 10 OS and encountered the same issue which you are going through in #35. Later on after many tries I just left that and 2 days back I though of retrying this again after you posted this topic.

As @HCP instructed, I uninstalled Ubuntu 20.04 completely with all its data and had a clean install of 18.04 version. The mistake I did in the previous build last month was neglecting the line which states

Code:
sudo update-alternatives --config x86_64-w64-mingw32-g++ # Set the default mingw32 g++ compiler option to posix.

As stated in the footnotes, it is not possible to do a successful build of Bitcoin Core without changing the compiler option to posix. Try to run the above code and select 1 in the option which states posix and continue building again. After changing the compiler option to posix, I never encountered the issue with make and everything passed smoothly.

Also note that, if you have any error while running

Code:
make install DESTDIR=/mnt/c/workspace/bitcoin

use

Code:
sudo make install DESTDIR=/mnt/c/workspace/bitcoin
sudo make deploy

instead. This did indeed solve the problem which you have posted in the previous post but I am not sure how well this might work on your PC.

So, after building I tried to run unit tests with python3 example_test.py and I got these errors  Huh Can anyone throw some light in this?

Code:

4 - IF I can't do that on mainnet, can it be done in testnet or regtest for learning purposes?
As ranochigo said, you can try that out in mainnet but it doesn't pass through the requirements and would get rejected in the first place. You can probably go with regtest instead of testnet as you would be having the freedom of generating your own blocks in a matter of few minutes and you would be the sole controller of what gets mined and what gets added to the blocks. You don't need to depend on the difficulty/peers which is common in the testnet and mainnet. On top of that, at times testnet miners use ASICs to mine testnet coins thereby increasing the difficulty and hence at regular intervals difficulty get reversed back.

If you need to learn about the exact generation of coins and adding transactions to the block and mining them as how it gets done in the mainnet, you should try out testnet where you will be having the role of either the normal user of bitcoin or the miner. But if you need to sound like satoshi and early miners Grin (doing whatever with blocks, mining in a few seconds and never relying on third party peers) you should definitely go with regression testing.

If you are not sure how to run the regtest mode, go to Settings -> Options -> Open Configuration File. Enter regtest=1 close and reopen core software and you will get the regtest mode. Go to console and enter generate 101 and you will mine 101 blocks to spend the first 50BTC

I am also having a quite closer look on the proposed new test network signet #18267 in which we will have a more practical approach towards testnet where we will be mining at more regular intervals. More on signet : Signet and How to get started
459  Economy / Services / Re: [OPEN] BestChange Signature Campaign | Sr Member+ on: July 30, 2020, 02:33:19 PM
@Best_Change

Just a random thought, not sure how others would react on this? But, instead of having $90 pay rate per week and having 25 posts as minimum you can consider paying $3.5 per post for Hero/Legendary Members. You can implement a rule like there is no minimum post count and you would be paying a maximum of upto 25-30 posts per week. Well, we can be very much sure that greedy spammers would try to reach their 25/30 posts somehow to grab the highest pay but on the other hand, this would differentiate spammers and non-spammers.

Right now, many in the campaign are forced to reach 25 posts minimum eventhough they are somewhat decent posters while comparing spammers which would eventually make them spam at some point in time in a week when they didn't reach the minimum. I personally consider this approach had a wider reach (ex. Chipmixer) than many campaigns which were indeed paying a little less than CM. If the quality participants wear the signature, the campaign would be having the best outreach instead of handing over to redundant posters who post 25 meaningless posts and are indeed a much less value to the forum.

I am not sure if someone has suggested this idea before, but we all know the outreach of no minimum post count campaigns like CM!!!

Just got to know about BTCGOSU yesterday and have been browsing through the site and reading reviews. All I can say is that the site looks attractive for first time users and the reviews are quite thought out and well explained. Our forum users always stand among the top in verifying new sites and checking out the trustworthiness of old sites from time to time. It's good to know @efialtis came up with a pretty good idea for launching a casino review website which is pretty much trustworthy and honest.

Since you are quite an active user here, scams being pointed out here would reflect all of a sudden in the review site and by the way would be a lot more faster than other sites expose them off. I have spread out the word about BTCGOSU to a newbie who have been searching for gambling review sites in the forum. Long way to go and I hope you would be bringing a lot more innovations in the upcoming days.

Good Luck with the project efialtis and as always great design jayce!  Cool
