81  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Are BFL singles worth is with no electricity costs? on: March 05, 2012, 10:50:20 PM
Simply put: no.

If you have free electricity (and thus free AC to cool them) then GPU offer higher MH/$ which is all that matters.

A couple of exceptions:
a) you have free electricity but it is limited.  FPGA would allow more MH/s before hitting you free "cap".
b) you have free electricity but that may change in near future (say <1 year) like a student about to graduate.
c) you have free electricity but a low WAP*.  Nearly silent FPGA can operate a much lower WAP than a buzzing, heat puking GPU farm can.

* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wife_acceptance_factor

The SI unit would be the SOAS (Significant other acceptance factor) but lets face it Americans are never going to accept metric.

I would add:

d) you have free electricity but low current service

I'm in a high rise condo and don't have 200 amp service like many houses.

So even though I have "free" electricity, I only have so much I can pull. I certainly can't add another air conditioner to deal with the extra heat.

e) you don't like the noise/heat of a rig with GPUs
f) you want to mine in your regular computer while you use it
g) you want to buy lots of them (since you stack them all in the same computer, it would probably be cheaper than the equivalent Ghash/s in GPUs+Mobo+PSU)
82  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Webpage for buying goods in other countries? on: March 04, 2012, 05:29:12 AM
I live in Germany and want to buy a couple of goods from Brazil. A few months ago, I found a bitcoin related website that established contact to (trusted) members in countries that ship the goods to you in exchange for a small fee. Unfortunately I cannot find the page anymore (neither via google nor in the bitcoin wiki). Anyone remembers the website or lives in Brazil? Thanks.

There are a few Brazilian people at the Portuguese section. If you post there I'm sure that someone will help you out.

Penso que será possível, mas só experimentando. Há um membro aqui do bitcointalk que vai tentar ligar lá a BFL Single: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=65752.msg774838#msg774838
84  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Advertise Bitcoin on every single banknote ( and make a new game ? ) on: March 01, 2012, 11:38:42 PM
I like the idea of a small sticker with a QR Code. Stickers aren't expensive to produce and ship, plus the notes stay clean.

In my opinion this should be crowd-funded, i.e. each person puts a few bitcents on a few bills and hands them out to strangers. The idea is not to get rich, but to metaphorically use fiat money to spread the word about a new kind of money. With crowd-funding there is no need for complicated means of verification via IP/email/whatever, it's first come first served.
85  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: (ATTN) BitcoinCharts.com Data Feed for CampBX on: March 01, 2012, 09:26:38 PM
Hi Nuno,
We now have a fairly comprehensive set of money transfer methods for the USA, now but we ran into regulatory roadblocks in two European countries.  Hoping for some good news soon!

We also have several new features coming out in next two months, but I am personally very excited about the new withdrawals page. It represents our new design approach, where CampBX presents its underlying functionality more like an iPad App - clean, smart, and efficient.

Hope you are doing great,
     Keyur

Yeah, the withdrawals page looks cool Smiley I'll keep an eye out for more updates. Good luck.
86  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: (ATTN) BitcoinCharts.com Data Feed for CampBX on: February 29, 2012, 11:09:35 PM
Any news regarding the new payment methods? I'm curious Wink

EDIT: I see them now. Are you still planning to enable european transfers this quarter?
87  Local / Português (Portuguese) / Re: Fim da mineração on: February 28, 2012, 08:02:56 PM
Prezados

Yes, apparently they are also implementing new features Smiley You can follow the update process on twitter.

Qual é o problema? 21 milhões não chega?
90  Local / Português (Portuguese) / Re: Hora de comprar bitcoin on: February 25, 2012, 01:02:20 AM
O que seria um bocado? 5%?

Não... 5% sobe e desce num dia. Eu diria na zona dos 20%, mas isto é pura especulação minha...

2. Why is BTC not an option for payment?
This.  I would be even more tempted to buy one now if I could pay in BTC.

Although I think I'll wait for revision 2 (I know it will be awhile)

BTC used to be an option. Email them and ask. From what people say, they usually answer emails in a timely manner.

Eu digo que ainda vai descer mais um bocado  Cool
93  Economy / Speculation / Re: Goomboo's Journal on: February 23, 2012, 11:11:32 PM
Can you elaborate a little on how risk is managed with volume?  Do you mean because of the higher frequency of trades involved in an hourly trading system?  Or perhaps amount of capital involved?

The method I'm testing out is scaling in after a big move.  The next cross over I trade 1X, then 2X, then 3X, then 4X, etc. until there's another large, profitable move.  Then I go back to 1X.

+1 to this. Nice idea. Let us know how it goes
94  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: PC for Mining on: February 23, 2012, 10:58:59 PM
not really able to build one - never tried but wouldnt like to experiment with 1000 usd would rather buy one pre built and then learn how to use it
i appreciate they are not as easy as plug and mine but i am fairly intelligent so i am sure i would figure it out
electricity cost is irrelevant electricity is included in my rent

Take a look at the marketplace section. Maybe there are people selling.
95  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: FPGA - 1st Quarter 2012 Summary (BFL vs. Icarus ?) on: February 23, 2012, 10:31:25 PM
You should also consider availability. Icarus is available right now (I think ?) and BFL's delivery date is kind of uncertain. Shipping costs are also important for people who live outside the US/China.
96  Other / Off-topic / Re: BFL Single in the wild (BOUNTY RECEIVED!!!) on: February 23, 2012, 09:51:12 PM
Weren't those only generating something like 200MH/s though?

Currently ~380Mhash/h at $569 and 20W
97  Economy / Speculation / Re: Goomboo's Journal on: February 23, 2012, 09:03:51 PM
I run sierra charts witch sends me an email when there is a crossover. Got an app on my phone witch detects the email form sierra charts and sounds an alarm.
Full automation is always risky because it can't detect false crossovers.

Nice system you have there Wink Sorry, but I haven't read everything and I am not using this system. What is a false cross over? Is it when the lines just touch? I think that you could code something to act with a certain confidence degree.
98  Economy / Speculation / Re: Goomboo's Journal on: February 23, 2012, 08:56:40 PM
Obviously if you could enter and exit earlier you would capture a lot more of the move, the danger lies in reintroducing guesswork and emotion to the decision making process.

Speaking of which, did someone automate this process? Doesn't look very hard to do.
99  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: PC for Mining on: February 23, 2012, 08:54:25 PM
about 1k usd

How much do you pay for electricity? Are you looking for power efficiency or reduced upfront costs? The wiki has some suggestions, but you probably would need to build it yourself.
100  Other / Off-topic / Re: BFL Single in the wild (BOUNTY RECEIVED!!!) on: February 23, 2012, 08:49:31 PM
OK. Now that the product seems to be genuine I have some questions for you all :

-what do you think will happen with the rest of the network ? Will all GPU miners cease to be profitable like the CPU miners ? What about free elec people ?

-has all the FPGA competition been wiped out with this weapon ?

-what will an ASIC do to the bitcoin network ?

-could this still be a long con and how can we see the warning signs in that case ?

Discuss !

1 - Yes, but slowly because FPGAs are much harder to buy (you need to wait for production, shipping, etc.) and because people with cheap electricity don't really care about this right now. Eventually the difficulty increase due to specialised hardware will push out GPUs, but this will probably take years.
2 - No. Icarus is nearly 2 times as efficient so it could be a better choice for people with expensive electricity. I also believe that we will see other products similar to BFL's in the following months
3 - It will increase the difficulty
4 - N/A
