81  Economy / Speculation / Re: Is it wise to deposit $ 100 in bitcoin before the united states vote? on: November 03, 2020, 10:08:31 AM
Hello Everyone I'm new here. I did some research about cryptocurrency exchange. I know very little about this topic. What should I do What do you suggest?I thought of investing to bitcoin for $100 to start before vote in usa. What do you guys think?

The 1040 tax form has this question right underneath the name section "“At any time in 2020, did you receive, sell, send, exchange, or otherwise acquire any financial interest in any virtual currency?”

That pretty much sums up the government's position. They know it exists. They want you to know that they know that you read that question. You will have to reply "Yes" to that question if you're filing taxes, even if just buying $100. The election has other implications like possible quantitative easing by the next president, but the tax implications are what you should know most. Death and taxes...
82  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How can we stop bitcoin scammers? on: November 03, 2020, 09:57:45 AM
Can you stop evil? NO. So, can you stop scammers? Hell Nah! You can only stop yourself from being scammed. There will always be scammers out there. You need to learn how to identify and repel them.
Absolutely. We cannot control other's decisions. Thus, despite all our efforts in telling people to think before they click, someone will still be a victim and as long as there is someone that can be tricked, there'll always be the tricksters. So what can we do? Learn. Learn from our past mistakes and experiences, and don't let yourself become a victim once more. You cannot control them but you can control you.

Pretty much this. The only thing you can do to stop scammers is put them in prison, and even that is not a guarantee of success (since plenty in the US have smart phones on the inside and conduct their "business" from their jail cell.

People need to do a little bit of due diligence. Having the information organized and easily presented would be helpful, but we have so many users that speak multiple languages in the local boards that honestly if people were no so damn impatient many scams would not take place.

And greed over common sense. The number of people who lose everything because they wouldn't pay 1% fee for an escrow is saddening.
83  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: American election is nothing to do with BTC on: November 03, 2020, 09:52:35 AM
You know there's going to be a large quantitative easing if one of the candidates gets put in office. Reich, Bernanke, Krugman are all pushing for it to help "ease the burden of covid" lol. Place your bets accordingly, but a bunch of freshly minted valueless fiat may be digitally running to your local bank at near 0% interest rates.

Many outside the US may not give a rats ass about the US but if their government is holding USD then their government will care  Wink

I'll let you guys figure out what QE420 will do to BTC price.
84  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Venezuela to Incorporate Bitcoin and Litecoin Wallets into National Remittances on: November 03, 2020, 09:41:39 AM
Most of the video cards I sold on Amazon/eBay went to Venezuela or UAE. I sold some stuff back in 2012 and I'm sure those GPUs kept on chugging through BTC even when Avalon was pumping out those ASICs. People who miner BTC, LTC and subsequently ETH are probably sitting on nice little stashes thanks to the cheap electricity. I doubt those people who were going through difficult routes to create their own economy will let the state have stewardship over their coins.
85  Economy / Exchanges / Re: How safe is Coinbase / Coinbase Pro? on: November 03, 2020, 09:29:09 AM
Why do you want to make things more complicated and not pay for ledger nano s directly by card ?
As you are buying simplest version of hardware wallet, I presume that money matters. So why you an intermediary like Coinbase to make a purchase? Coinbase will charge you 4$ for a transaction, and this is half of ledger shipment fee Smiley

Apologies, I wasn't very clear there. I want to order the Ledger Nano S from my Amazon prime account using cash moneys straight from my debit card Smiley

I had a bit of a long day at work then came home to try to figure this all out. In hindsight I started with one question then kind of moved on and started asking other questions without really being sure what I wanted to ask.

I guess what I really want to ask is, will I be able to transfer money directly from all 4 seperate accounts directly onto my hard wallet (Coinbase Pro, Coinbase, Coinbase Wallet and Electrum) or will I need to transfer any of the Bitcoin from any of the other accounts into my main Coinbase account in order to then transfer onto the hard drive when it arrives?

Before you do any transferring of funds to your Ledger I would read up on how to make sure your ledger is secure. Amazon used to be pretty good about selling authentic stuff when you buy directly from them but they have been co-mingling their inventory with other people at a higher and hgher rate. What this means is Amazon might very well ship you a brand new Ledger that somebody else was selling if it happens to be in a closer warehouse. The danger in that is some people have been tampering with all the hardware wallets to learn the mnemonic seed before shipping it out. I have a Ledger device that I purchased direct from Ledger.

Please read up on how to make sure the seed is newly generated before transferring funds to the wallet. Going through all the step only to send money to a crook's account would definitely sour anybody's day.
86  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Hidden claymore .bat file on: November 02, 2020, 08:08:22 AM
It's relatively easy to write. Google for hiding command prompt visual basic and you should see some example you can copy paste into the bat.

DO NOT google for apps to hide a bat file - that's a sure fire way to get malware onto your PC. I searched for that once when I needed to run an auto mouse clicker without it being in the way when ALT-tabbing and the amount of dangerous sites in google search was insane.
87  Economy / Exchanges / Re: How safe is Coinbase / Coinbase Pro? on: November 02, 2020, 07:58:24 AM
As other have mentioned ad nauseam Coinbase is pretty safe to use  - just like buying a money order at Walmart. Would you trust Walmart to hold your money safely? They're a big multi-billion dollar company and if something happens you'll probably be unable to go after them for loses. Coinbase is in the same boat. If your own circumstances and security are more precarious then perhaps it is wiser to just leave the coins there, but otherwise it's usually better to have them in your possession.

Move slowly and carefully though when moving funds. Once crypto is moved it is for all intents and purposes unrecoverable, so ask questions if you unsure about any wallets or security.
88  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: New way to cheat with Bitcoin! be careful on: November 02, 2020, 07:42:19 AM
When you visit youtube and read random comments about people having success with a Bitcoin "guru" who teaches people how to trade - that's your scammer right there. For all the great technical analysis that can be done on BTC nobody has shown consistent earnings other than whales moving the market themselves.

The scam listed in the OP is as old as time, all they did was add BTC and cypto buzzwords to attract younger naive people.
89  Economy / Economics / Re: Is it possible to live without banks? on: November 01, 2020, 08:14:39 AM
Its not possible if you are living in the City, you always need a bank for financial management and assistance, especially if you are working and paid directly through your bank accounts. Its really important, that people will always seek some bank services from time to time. However, if you were just a simple person, living in some remote areas, or a villager, its quite possible to live without banks for this kind of people only does works in the fields to eat and earn just a few, enough for daily living or good for a week. They dont need a bank for their fund management, I guess.
In addition to that, the world is fast-transforming into more digitalized and some people are now using several digital platforms that will make their fund management be more easier, less hassle and secure. So, maybe, it can be possible this time.

How long has it been since you were in the countryside? If long ago, I hasten to disappoint you - everything is exactly the opposite as you described.
Not only that, even if I live far from the city, I work either in local production or remotely. In any case, I will be paid a salary on a Bank card - and this is where the greatness of country life begins.
With the universal prevalence of the Internet-even in "rural areas", you can pay for purchases by Bank transfer/transfer money to someone/transfer money between your accounts everywhere. Outside the city, you are much more critically dependent on banks because without this infrastructure, cash payments will be much more difficult for you because there are much fewer ATMs for cash withdrawal there than in the city.
You have a rather funny and truly childish idea of life in the country to be honest.

That's the crap that Citibank, Chase and B of A feed customers to make them think the banks are there to assist people. People have conflated the digitization of assets with banks. Cryptocurrency is digital and really has not need for banks (except for centralized ones like Ripple and Tether). All those day to day financial activities could be done with a simple piece of plastic and it could be issued by a credit union. Probably the only thing difficult to obtain outside of banks is money for a home loan as Freddie/Fannie in the US basically make banks take a cut - corporate welfare baked into the system.

You could easily have a digital device that reads a cards magnetic strip and does a blockchain transaction at the point-of-sale. In China most people are using their phones for payment. It's only a matter of time before that central server that tracks your Yuan gets converted to a blockchain network.
90  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Does auto trading bot make good profit ? on: November 01, 2020, 08:02:05 AM
5% monthly gain for the possibility of losing your basis of whatever you have on the exchange? Considering the lax security around most of the exchanges it doesn't seem worth it to expose your coins to a hack/exchange closure if you're using automated trading. You can probably go years without having an event happen, but when it does it will most likely erase your gains and then some.
When using a trading bot I think it will be terrible because there is activity by a third party that can find out your assets by inserting some unknown scripts so that your assets can be taken by third parties, that is the most terrible risk, so in my opinion don't think too much about profits but think about the capital used.

Well anybody who is using closed source software that they haven't commissioned for their own use is just asking to lose their stuff. There are open source trading bots available that have been vetted by the community and you can compile it yourself, but that will still not remove the risk of keeping your assets on a centralized exchange while you're not actively engaged in interacting with your funds. That's the single greatest risk with this endeavor. Of course there's chance the bot malfunctions or runs into an unanticipated error and makes bad trades.

92  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: How to continue mining ETH on your 4G AMDs for up to 4 more month on: November 01, 2020, 12:51:04 AM

I can't remember which thread it was in (on of the more recent threads ie last 3 months) but somebody posted a link to the nvidia forums where a dev admitted it was an issue with a driver and that they had no plans to implement a change/fix to the issue. Oddly you don't see the same issue with the 1070Ti which is still hashing like new.

Damn if this how you remember, that would mean the end of 1070Ti passed 4Gb on ethereum if we can't find a driver that doesn't have this issue :-/
Hopefully this problem doesn't occur on Linux so at least we could migrate

I think this is the nvidia forum you are referencing : https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/blockchain-drivers/110847/12

Thanks for the link. That's actually another thread but same information. Translation Lookaside Buffer (TLB) issue is known and nVidia really doesn't want to address the issue. That's another reason why I would be weary to buy nVidia cards for mining. They really don't want to support miners despite miners giving them record growth in 2017. AMD may not be catering to the miners with the new gen cards but at least they came out with the speed decrease workaround within 4 months.
93  Economy / Economics / Re: Iran accepting cryptocurrencies to avoid US Dollar on: October 31, 2020, 09:33:15 AM
Iran knows that if it takes Yuan it's basically at the mercy of China when it comes to keeping those shipping lanes open through the Strait of Hormuz. China will make Iran play gatekeeper even if it's not in Iran's best interest. Russia stopped their pipeline usage of Iranian oil so it's basically just playing a solo game and looking at Maduro's petrodollar currency. Neither of those countries wants to play like the Scandinavians.

hijacking this thread but anyone know why 1070ti 8Gb card have the same issue ?
I have tested in bench mode with height 390 and my mining speed is slashed by 2... (my motherboards also have 8Gb)

95  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Claymore's Dual Ethereum AMD+NVIDIA GPU Miner v15.0 (Windows/Linux) on: October 31, 2020, 07:25:00 AM
Why can't  just split the DAG file to make the 2GB GPU work  Huh

Ethminer seems to have tried to do it, but it hasn't worked out yet.

Video games break up large files. I don't understand why can't do this in mining?

He is actually correct. Back in the days when the DAG file was like > 2GB, I was upset that I couldn't mine with my 2GB GPUs. And there was a developer from the eth foundation that basically was working on a miner software where it would split the DAG file and make it possible to mine on 1GB, 2GB. The miner worked in simulation mode at reduced speeds, however it never worked in a real mining situation. Hence the project was dropped. However lately it seems that lolminer has figured out a way to split the DAG file and possible to mine when DAG exceeds 4GB in the coming months. However... the speeds will be much slower AND with every new dag they will slow down and down and down.

The reason why you can do this in video games is because they don't require as fast speeds as mining does. So in a video game the memory is loaded either on the RAM or SSD and later transferred to the GDDR, however it doesn't need to had super fast unlike mining. So as long as gameplay isn't interupted its fine, however for mining it wouldn't work.

Yeah that's part of the fuss over the new RTX and AMD 6xxx cards, windows drivers will supposedly support direct access so the GPU memory can run at an elevated level and not be nannied by the OS as much. I guess AMD is trying some proprietary caching with that 128MB cache on the cards to speed up predictive hits. For games seems to be between 5% and 12% boost. It would be nice if that higher speed cache could work (mine) at a faster rate.
96  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Number 9! Ninth altcoin thread. Back to the moon Baby! on: October 30, 2020, 01:05:43 AM
If the 3070 is almost the same on a hash/$ ratings as a 6xxx card then I would go with the nVidia simply because their stream encoder is always worth it for resale value down the line and I assume their DLSS will be a little better than AMD's version. If you're going for maximum hash today without regard for resale then the older AMD cards seem to be best bang. Looks like the new gen is great for gamers and meh for miners - at least until tweaks have matured in a couple months.

Read some books on Buffet. I used to admire him until I found out what a crook he has become in the last 20 years. You know every Duracell battery that's been destroying your electronics - that's because BH forced P&G to basically to use substandard chemistry and a defective cell design - thereby creating millions of tons of ewaste. He also lobbied hard against the oil pipeline playing ads on TV about the environmental impact when his own rail line had below the industry average safety and higher than average incidents of oil spills. He gives off a humble grandpa person but it's all just a charade for his own self ambitions.

If it was entirely VRAM based then an ASIC would simple need HBM and a cheap FPGA or CPU to mine beyond that capable by a video card. The cores have to actually calculate the solutions and the RAM is needed to index that table. Clearly the core count is significantly higher because they were able to increase the efficiency even on the same node, so more of that 16GB of memory will be utilized. You could pair a RX460 with HBM memory and map a large bus to the memory it would still crawl. You need all parts running for ETH (even though everybody always parrots that core is irrelevant).
ETHash requires 8192 bytes accessed in VRAM per hash, with 512 GB/s bandwidth it's impossible to have more than 67.1 MH/s, no matter what GPU cores can do. Infinity cache can't help when 4 GB of memory is accessed randomly. FPGAs with HBM exist, they have similar bandwidth and hashrates at much lower power consumption (51 MH/s @ 70 watts).

I'm on a phone right now so I'll take your word for the napkin math. What was the theoretical maximum for Radeon 7 cards if strictly going by memory bandwidth? If it is indeed that close to the bandwidth maximum threshold, then perhaps AMD did not want the cards going to miners. Maybe that was a more of a reason for going GDDR6 instead of HBM2 cost factors. Yields for GDDR6 and GDDR6x have been pretty good from Samsung as it's pretty mature at this point (at least 16Gb).

if the 6800xt does 100mh and 180 watts it will be a great miner.

if the 6800xt does 90mh and 200 watts it is okay.

It also needs to be available.

I almost got a Nvidia 3080 at Best Buy today. but it locked out of the cart,
Why does everyone assume these ridiculous numbers for 6000 series GPUs? Did you see the specs? They all have GDDR6 with 256 bit bus, 512 GB/s bandwidth only. They will do ~60 MH/s at best in stock, maybe up to 70 MH/s with memory overclock.
