Op should be reading the thread about slush's pool since those questions are specific to that pool (Slush uses a custom method of counting shares).

With regard to mining, pretty much any home miner would tell you you're probably going to end up loosing money.  Buy a cheap miner like a Rockbox and test the theory yourself if you want to see how mining works.

That's the official activity thread.  You can't lose activity, but cannot gain more than 14 activity per 2 week period, so it will be a while before you can use sig campaigns.  In the meantime, read up on the Bitcoin economy and how to secure a wallet.
1003  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoin/Litecoin Mining Hardware Investment on: July 30, 2014, 08:49:39 PM
Using the components of a laptop to mine is ridiculous, but using a laptop to control a miner is perfectly fine.  Some miners like the S1 don't even need a PC or Pi to control them.  Some miners can be run off a low power raspberry Pi.
1004  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Please tell me if my computer will be ok for mining or not on: July 30, 2014, 08:47:48 PM
Try googling friedcat or AsicMiner and see how big their farm is.  They're sitting on 150PH/s worth of chips and trying to find buyers or they're just going to make miners themselves.
1005  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The coming EMP attack is sure to take Bitcoin down. on: July 30, 2014, 08:41:05 PM
With an EMP attack, bitcoin would be the least of your worries.
And it would secured by the rest of the world.

Well with the stupidity I witness around here sometimes I can imagine more people freaking out about their Bitcoin wallets than pottable water, food or medical supplies.

Well didn't you hear about that new acid that instantly corrodes any conductor withing seconds and propels itself along the conductor?  All somebody has to do is drop a few drops into the electrical socket and the whole US electrical grid will be destroyed in seconds!  Argh, run for the hills!

I see Obama has improved Amercia's standing in the world since every vote is not for the USA  Grin

A well deserved Nobel Peace Price!
1007  Other / Politics & Society / Re: what do you think about the way college tuitions keep increasing out of control on: July 30, 2014, 08:30:40 PM
A water main burst at UCLA yesterday and flooded Pauley Pavillion, parking structures and closed down Sunset Blvd - for the 30 minutes I watched the report they reported about 9 times that it would interfere with basketball, volleyball and they expressed great concern about not ruining the athletic field for football practice.

30 minutes, 21 people taking in 9 clips about sports - not one person mentioned anything about classes or academics.

Look at this article in USA today: http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/college/2014/07/29/ucla-flooding-pauley-pavilion-water-main-breaks/13341019/

search for the word "class" and your will get no hit.

Tuition = money to "buy" better NCAA "stars".

I think that pretty much sums up academia in the US.
1008  Other / Politics & Society / Re: IRS claims it has LOST two years' worth of emails from former official Lerner on: July 30, 2014, 08:20:03 PM

New Emails Show Lois Lerner Called Some Conservatives ‘A**holes’

New emails uncovered by the House Ways and Means Committee indicate that former IRS employee Lois Lerner has a strong dislike of some conservatives, and at one point called them “assholes” in an email exchange.

The committee released an email Lerner received in November 2012 complaining about the “whacko wing of the GOP.” The person mocked conservatives for believing there are “too many foreigners sucking the teat” and that it is “time to hunker down, buy ammo and food, and prepare for the end.” The person added that the “right wing radio shows are scary to listen to.”

Lerner replied, “Great. Maybe we are through if there are that many assholes.”

The other person then wrote, “And I’m talking about the hosts of the shows. The callers are rabid.”

Lerner replied, “So we don’t need to worry about alien terrorists. It’s our own crazies that will take us down.”

1009  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Can Bitcoin survive against Solar Flare? on: July 30, 2014, 08:17:47 PM
This is one of those things the the Bitcoin network can't really adapt to since it's out of our hands to correct.  Even a moderate flair affecting one hemisphere is enough to cause a fork and massive miner disruption.  Of course if the internet goes down Bitcoin is the last thing most people would be worried about since power, water, gas and other commodities are now gold.
1010  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: New setup- assume free power on: July 30, 2014, 08:02:02 PM
thanks for the reply. can you break down in ranges what is limited, medium, high processing speeds? Also, sorry for asking the obvious whats the units to measure it as it starts Gh/s -> to whats next ->  and so on? if i were to buy a dedicated rig to mine for the next 6 months how much $$ would it take to setup to have a decent expectation of break even and profitability within say 6-12 months?

There is no low/med/high really since high to an individual is low to a company.  The network is about 150PH/s, that's 150 x 1000 TH/s or 150 x 1000 x 1000 GH/s.  You're a medium player to most if you have over 0.1% (150TH) of the network, and a big player if you have over 1% (1500TH/s).

Profitability doesn't really matter on how much you spend unless you spend over $1 million USD.  When you spend large amounts of money you can get custom miners or get special treatment from the manufacturer and get your miners a few weeks early to make a profit instead of a loss.

Home home users you just buy the cheapest hash/$.

Right now only the S3 looks like a possibly profitable venture.
1011  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: New setup- assume free power on: July 30, 2014, 07:52:01 PM
hey thanks for the response! as you can see im still pretty much new to all this, so bear with me. With the formula you used, the return is half a bitcoin in a year and change? Is that solo or mining pool? Does that factor in the % of getting supremely lucky and getting a block reward (25 coins)?

and if you could simplify it even more, assuming free electricity, how is mining even worth it at all? How are the businesses which make specialized mining rigs sell things if its a losing proposition of say $1000 per $1500 spent?

Yes 0.5BTC if the difficulty goes up at a high rate.  4.5BTC if it goes up slowly.  This is assuming pool mining - solo mining would be bad with that limited hashrate as you will most likely end up with nothing.

Why are people mining?  Well companies are mining because they can make miners for 1/3 the price they charge us.  The just sell the units to us after a month after they took the majority of the profits - just the sad reality.  People buy the miners hoping to get rich.
1012  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: What PSU you use for your antminer S3? on: July 30, 2014, 07:46:14 PM
Get a 1500 watt psu and hook like 4 to it... Save a lot of space and trouble..

There are a lot of people who would never even be able to order a 1500W PSU due to it being out of stock or not even available in their area of the world.  It might be reasonable to get an 800W or 1200W and hook up 2 or 3 respectively, but 1500/1600W PSUs are sometimes hard to come by.
1013  Other / Off-topic / Re: Lawyers on: July 30, 2014, 10:18:04 AM
dude i seriously hate every lawyer and law maker.

Normal rate for a lawyer = $500 per hr.
dude i seriously hate every surgeon and doctor.

Normal rate for a surgeon  = $10,000 per hr.

Are those US Dollars?  Is so, where the hell is this?

I do internal medicine and I'm probably quitting this year because I can make more money doing photography or IT support than I currently get with medicine - more than 1/2 my patients don't even pay their bills.

No surgeon is making $10K/hr - the hospital is charging you $10K an hour.  A wealthy neurosurgeon might make $2 mil a year busting his ass off for 80-90hrs/wk plus call - that doesn't translate into $10k/hr

She looks pretty cute but is a little on the plain side - I'm sure if some modeling company glammed her up she could be doing VS runways in a couple months.

Media will spin whatever they need to get you to click/read their drivel - with these kind of stories it always works.

Nightly Business Report with Paul Kangas - don't know if it's still on - was typically on PBS stations.
1016  Other / Off-topic / Re: Life As A BITCOIN Miner... on: July 30, 2014, 10:04:31 AM
Goddamn garage is too hot again, machine locked.  Have to drive across town again to air that shit out and reboot the machine(s).

It's saying something that I'm too lazy to develop a remote switching setup and put in proper fans, making it so I have to drive across town every other day.

Oh God stop reminding me about 2012 and 1/2 of 2013.  I can't count the number of times I drove to the sketchy area where my wife's office is to reset some miners.  I wouldn't go for 1 or 2, but sometimes the router would lock up, the DNS doesn't get updated due to crappy ISP, the power goes out, something trips.  So happy to be out of mining.

1019  Other / Off-topic / Re: Lets talk about how hot Spanish/Latin girls are. [NSFW] on: July 30, 2014, 07:23:21 AM
Yeah... I prefer Latinas to Asian women. Asian women are too skinny, with microscopic boobs. Also, it is almost impossible nowadays to find an Asian lady who hasn't undergone cosmetic procedure. The Latinas are much more natural.

Haha, what part of the world are you living in?  1/3 of my Latina patients 18-50 have had their boobs augmented.  Including lipo, tucks, nosework, etc - I would say almost 1/2 have had work done in LA.  Probably about 15% of all the Asians have had work done.

Then again this is by medical disclosure.  So maybe the Asians are hiding it or maybe the Latinas are proud of their "work" hehe.

In honor of my 2000th post, I'll present a pair:

The best would be to get a bitcoin app for your phone, send like 0.25 to it and try to use it as much as possible.  Get used to how the transfers go, and how quick things are verified.  Experience always is the best.

Eh phone wallet apps are not very secure at the moment.  While I would encourage people to spend Bitcoin to increase adoption, for some 0.25BTC is almost a months worth of savings.
