801  Economy / Economics / Re: First Nation to keep Bitcoin as Official Reserves on: April 29, 2011, 02:39:39 AM
I think Baltic states could be perfect candidates. They have small, tech savvy populations and great internet infrastructure. Their economies have been really badly hit and although it returned to growth late last year it is still very unstable. In a long term emigration is a big problem and since Germany opened borders, it will get even worse.

I am christian for stronger nuclear armament. I strongly believe there should be links to christian religious services such as churches accepting bitcoins and local plutonium and uranium dealers

I've never opened a Bank account so I have no idea

Corrected
can't change my vote anyway Tongue

Sorry about that. I didn't allow changing votes when I created the poll and now I think it's too late.

Also, may I ask what country do you live in and how is it even possible to survive without a bank account?

Are you aware that criminals are using your currency(whatever it may be) at the moment?
806  Other / Off-topic / When will people start closing their bank accounts? on: April 28, 2011, 06:53:22 PM
What do you think?
807  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should drugs be listed at bitcoin.it? on: April 28, 2011, 02:54:44 PM
It saddens me how much the community is gripped by paranoia. This paranoia that plagues the community has created illogical reasoning in the best of you.

How sad is it when our business model is
"Drug and Gambling Industries only" rather then "Corporate culture all over the world + Drug and Gambling Industries"
You reasoning is that your belief in Bit Coins is so grandeur that the US would somehow destroy or make it illegal
I'm not even gonna say how idiotic for someone to believe that laws and congress would pass the criminalization of a currency because it is "used by drug dealers"
How stupid would it be just to make the US and Western allies use USD while the rest of the world with emerging economies flourish with Bit Coins
The US would never adopt such a policy its obvious to anyone

Do you guys think a good advertisement for a company would be:
PRODUCT A THE BEST AND ONLY BUSINESS IS WITH DRUGS AND GAMBLING, BUY NOW!!!

These satire points i could fully explain in detail if anyone wishes  to know.
But i think you guys understand the point.
It seems like many of the community members are looking at this not from a business prospective, corporate or even investor prospective.
Even though-we, the early adopters are suppose to be a pioneer in something big.
It seems much of our collective decision is not going to be based on business or reason but just paranoia and personal prejudice.

How full of shit you are.
The only thing you are right about is:

It seems like many of the community members are looking at this not from a business prospective, corporate or even investor prospective.

There are a lot of very intelligent people around here and their reasoning is in order

And just about every business owner I poll about bitcoin is turned off by the large contingent of teenagers who naively think that we may evade [tax, drug] laws using bitcoin.

Decades of brainwashing can't easily be undone.

And I could care less what people choose to do with their bodies (or their finances).

But I do care about making sure that bitcoin avoids becoming something that merchants want to avoid.

If bitcoin is only accepted by gambling and drug sites, then it will not become the revolutionary currency that frees people from their government fiat currency shackles.

There is a time and a place for everything, and that time is [college | Tor].

Not that long ago I was of the same opinion, but the more I think about it, the more I realize it is not so. What it will eventually boil down to, is the path with least resistance - if it's going to be cheaper and easier to use bitcoin than current methods of payment, it will get adopted. With time, it won't matter whether it's associated with perceived illegalities or not. Like file sharing - it is illegal, but people still do it. However for it to take off - there was a strong minded community at the core, who "did not do what they were told".
All I wanted to say is that if someone doesn't realize what are the implications of this currency, maybe we are better without them, at least for now.

and the WH will obviously be hostile towards Bitcoin.
I don't agree that this is a given.

You must be joking. Bitcoin is threatening them with bilions of dollars loss if not a total dissolution and you don't think it's a given?

This is a bad idea and gives me uneasy feeling
But I guess if Bitcoin is going to survive, it will have to go through it. Although, if you declined their offer, it would most probably delayed any action against bitcoin

Edit: and by reading satoshi's post I get the same feeling, that he wanted to keep bitcoin under the radar for as long as possible.
813  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin thread on OCN, 27 pages in 12 hours on: April 27, 2011, 06:18:23 PM
Ok, I have to add to my favorite quotes from that thread...they get better and better if you keep reading..You can see this guy made some kind of effort, but...

I read the wiki and I understood pretty fast

You sell you're computing power lottery style
1 block = 50 BTC.
depending on market conditions 1 BTC ~ 0.8 - 1.9 $
The company that started this pay a FIXED SUM / HOUR ( they give 6 blocks per hour so 1 every 10 mins ... put another way they pay 300 - 600 $ per hour to the USERS "selling" their computer power) and then they offer this to companies who need it for various tasks on the open market ( hence the fluctuating price )

Its basically luck based because the fixed sum and the varying number of users giving up their computer power and how much power they give

Cheesy this guy "understood it pretty fast"
814  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Need 5 btc fast on: April 27, 2011, 04:28:16 PM
#bitcoin-otc on freenode

edit: also, post this in marketplace - you'll have more luck there

I wasn't talking just about drug dealing. The problem is if you start censoring, where do you draw the line. What this site is now - it's perfect. If someone doesn't like what they see, they can look the other way. There's always a choice of closing your mind and letting your government decide what's best for you.

P.S. drug dealers have feeling too   Smiley
This is where I draw the line: the oficial pages (wiki and .org).

I wasn't talking about websites. It's what goods and what topics should be censored that is in question. Some things are illegal in some places but not the others. Can we talk about drugs? What about politics and overthrowing governments? Maybe politically incorrect topics should be banned as well? Before you know it, the weather will be the only thing allowed here!
I said it before and will say it again bitcoin is a tool - it's not a problem. In order to deal with problems, whatever you perceive it to be, it's the cause that you have to address. Not to ignore or ban something
816  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should drugs be listed at bitcoin.it? on: April 27, 2011, 04:09:21 PM
No, illegal drugs should not be listed.  everyone here needs to think of BTC as your new baby.  u can be the biggest, baddest, meanest SOB but when u have a new baby or young kid, u don't expose them to the horrors of life.  any parent will understand this.  even non parents should.  once they grow up, thats a different story.

The concept of legality is localized.  Bitcoin is universal.

Exactly! What if I live in Amsterdam and would like to find a local coffee shop that sells weed and accepts bitcoins?
817  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Bitcoin national radio campaign! on: April 27, 2011, 03:59:59 PM
I'll add another 2 BTC
818  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should drugs be listed at bitcoin.it? on: April 27, 2011, 03:55:57 PM
This is pure speculation on my part, but I don't think that removing drug markets from the bitcoin wiki is going to have a big effect on the drug trade. I think that bitcoins offer a huge advantage over other currencies for black and gray market trading. The potential is so great, that I think sellers will still be able to attract buyers without being advertised on the wiki (through other means: forums, IRC channels, word-of-mouth, etc...).

Removing drugs markets from the wiki will not stop people from buying drugs with bitcoins (and I don't think it will really hurt sales, either), but it will give bitcoins a broader appeal. I think the benefit outweighs the cost in this case.

I wasn't talking just about drug dealing. The problem is if you start censoring, where do you draw the line. What this site is now - it's perfect. 819  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should drugs be listed at bitcoin.it? on: April 27, 2011, 03:20:24 PM
Morally, and in principle: of course it should be on the list.
However, if we consider the argument from effect I think it's obvious that for the sake of bitcoin gaining popularity it should be left off the list.

But think two steps ahead. If we remove all illegal stuff, what kind of people are we going to encourage to adopt bitcoin. The answer is your average Joe. Bitcoin gets popular - all good and well. That's step one. Step two is when governments take action against bitcoin and I believe it's not a matter of if, but a matter of when. What do you think the average Joe is going to do then? The answer is simple - leave. If we lose big portion of adopters it will cause major problems.
Not too long ago I argued the same argument, but now I realize I was wrong. We should firstly obtain a stable user base who realize the concepts and implications that bitcoins brings and not just think it's a cool new get rich quick scheme. Average Joe will have their chance to join when bitcoin is mainstream.
820  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin concept issue questions on: April 27, 2011, 12:50:35 AM
ahh, that's right, the bitcoins can go like 8 decimal places, it takes a very long time for what i said to be any actually issue.

And by then we hopefully won't be using money at all
